KINGSPORT - Betty C. Chen, 65, departed this life on Oct. 19, 2000 at Duke University Medical Center Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Betty, born in Taiwan, graduated from Emory University with a master's degree in library science and served as librarian at Virginia Tech, ETSU and the Bristol Public Library. She was active in the arts circle and was a member of the Kingsport Art Guild and the Life Arts Society in Singapore. Her brush paintings were shown at numerous exhibits in Singapore, Johnson City and Kingsport.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years Fred; daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Mark Wells, Toronto, Canada; son and daughter-in-law, Frederick and Kimberly Chen, Pittsburgh, Pa.; two grandchildren, Ani and Matthew Wells, of Toronto, Canada; mother, Liaw Mien, Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Chung-long Chen, Atlanta, Ga.; brothers, Cheng Chien Hsun, Cheng Chien Chien, Cheng Chien Ron, Cheng Chien Tsun and Cheng Chien Chong and sister, Xie Cai Yung, of Taiwan; as well as special friends, Howard and Rita Irwin, Kingsport and Bruce and Anne Irwin, Hildesheim, Germany.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gary Soop officiating. A reception will follow.

Kimberly Christian
RICHMOND, Ky. - Kimberly Olivia Christian, 37, of 806A Barry Court, passed away Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mrs. Christian was a native of Kingsport, but had lived in Richmond, Ky. for the past three years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Church Hill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dave and Edith Albright; and maternal grandmother, Lucille Lucas.
Surviving are her husband, Shawn Christian, Richmond, Ky.; one son, Brenton David Christian, Richmond, Ky.; one daughter, Hailey Elizabeth Grace Christian, Richmond, Ky.; one brother, David Albright, Kingsport; two sisters, Sondra McCamy and Susan Albright, both of Kingsport; special niece, Danette Kesler; one nephew, Shannon Brandon; two nieces, Sarah and Rebecca Brandon.

J.C. Fletcher
KINGSPORT - Joseph Clint 'J.C.' Fletcher, 80, of Cooks Valley Road, died early Wednesday morning (Oct. 25, 2000) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport.
Mr. Fletcher was retired from the Sullivan County Sheriffs Dept. after over 40 years of service.
He had numerous letters of commendation from congressman James H. Quillen, the F.B.I., Sullivan County District Attorney's Office, and several businessmen and individuals throughout the region.
He was voted law enforcement officer of the year in 1964 and was appointed Sullivan County Coroner in 1977, where he served until his retirement in 1991.
He retired as chief deputy after serving in that rank for several years.
Mr. Fletcher attended Temple Baptist Church prior to his decline in health.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Fletcher; parents, Joseph Clint Fletcher and Mary Belle Martin Fletcher; and two brothers, Charles Fletcher and Wallace Fletcher.
Surviving are his wife, Olivette 'Betty' (Grogg) Fletcher, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Spencer Terry Fletcher Sr. and wife Linda, and Jeffery Alex Fletcher and wife Beth, all of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Spencer Terry Fletcher Jr., Chad Fletcher, Andy Fletcher, Shelli Hughes, and Alex Fletcher; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown, with the Rev. Joe W. Byrd officiating.
Music will be provided by Bud Hulsey.
Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.

KINGSPORT - Betsy Grant Fogleman, 83, died Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000) at Preston Place.
She was born in Sullivan County and lived most of her life here.
Mrs. Fogleman was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Kingsport. She was an avid reader and volunteer of the Sullivan County Library.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Bess Grant; her husband, James N. Fogleman; two sisters, Isabel Grant Hyatt and Jane Grant Hicks; and a brother, Robert Young Grant Jr.
Surviving are two nephews, Grant Hyatt and wife, Sherry, Blountville, and Dr. Carr Hyatt and Jamille Hyatt, Kingsport; several other nieces and nephews, Betsy Herring, Charleston, S.C., Judy Bossom, South Carolina, Jay Hicks, New Jersey, Robin Grant, Massachusetts, Jeanie Grant, Vermont; and several other great-nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Gene Smitherman officiating.
Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

ROANOKE, Va. - Scarlett Ann Harkleroad, 52, formerly of Montcalm, W.Va., has left this world for a better place. On Oct. 26, 2000 she passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family.
She was born in Montcalm, W.Va., on April 25, 1948. She was preceded in death by her father, Hubert R. Thompson, Bluewell, W.Va., and grandparents, Albert and Dessie Thompson, Montcalm, W.Va.
Surviving are her husband, James M. Harkleroad, Roanoke, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Mike Haytaian, Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Brian Snoddy, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Tracie Neece, Virginia; son, Michael Neece, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, Jamie and Brandy Harkleroad, Wichita Falls, Texas; mother and stepfather, Nellie Thompson and Steve Chow, Illinois; sister, Barbara Neanover, Florida; brother, Hubert R. Howard S. Hite
KINGSPORT - Howard S. Hite, 69, of the Sullivan Gardens Community, died Wednesday morning (Oct. 25, 2000) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Fall Branch, Tenn., he served in the U.S. Marine Corp.
Mr. Hite was vice president of Lyle Construction and began Construction Contractors Co. Inc., as owner and founder in 1981. He was owner and operator of H&H Angus Farms and was a member of H&H American Angus Association.
Mr. Hite served as both president and vice president of Sertoma Club of Kingsport. He served on the board of directors several times since 1966 and was serving on the board at the time of his death. He was a charter and life member of the Sertoma Club and was honored as Sertoman of the Year on two occasions during his 38 years of perfect attendance. He was also nominated for the Kingsport Young Man of the Year Award in 1965.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Crawford Hite, Kingsport; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Taylor and husband Tom, Evans, Ga.; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve Hite and wife Wanda, Kingsport; four grandchildren, Seth Taylor, Abram Taylor, Dustin Hite, and Jacob Hite; two sisters, Beulah Jones, Fall Branch, and Ruby Sumner, Kingsport; two brothers, Luther Hite and Harley Hite, both of Fall Branch; and several nieces and nephews.

BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Minnie Ann Hobbs, 90, died Wednesday (Oct. 25, 2000) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born March 5, 1910 in Hancock County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Hill and Nan Mullins. She lived most of her life in Big Stone Gap, Va., and was a member of the Holiness Church of God in Jesus Name in Big Stone Gap.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Hobbs; three sons, Carroll Hobbs, Johnny Hobbs and Clinton Hobbs; and a daughter, Sybil Hobbs Hunter.

W.L. (Bud) Holloway
PORT ARTHUR, Texas - W.L. (Bud) Holloway, 82, 1713 Lakecrest Drive, passed away Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000) af his home after an extended illness.
He was born in Horsebranch, Ky., but lived in Port Arthur, Texas for 54 years. Bud was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II and worked at Neches-Butane Chemical Co. for 25 years as a boiler fireman.
He was a member of the North End Baptist Church, Port Arthur, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel Holloway in 1990; and his stepson, Kenneth Jordan in 1999.
Surviving are one stepson and his wife, Gerald and Gay Jordan, Blountville; two granddaughters, Stacey Lewis, Gray and Rene Mabery, Willis, Texas; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Livingston Funeral Home, Groves, Texas.
Kathleen Hutchens
KINGSPORT - Mary Kathleen 'Kat' Hutchens, 89, formerly of Memorial Court, died Thursday morning (Oct. 26, 2000) at Wexford House Health Care after a period of declining health.
Born in Hawkins County, she had resided in Church Hill until moving to Kingsport in 1975. She was a retired school teacher of Hawkins County, where she taught at Church Hill High School and worked for Holston Valley Hospital until she retired in 1977.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Church Hill, where she was the organist and pianist for years. She also taught music for years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Hutchens and Eva Underwood Hutchens.
Surviving are her dear friends, DeWayne and Pat Bowen, Kingsport; a cousin, Ralph Ratliff and wife, Retha, Church Hill; several other cousins; special friends and caregivers at Wexford House.

MOUNT CARMEL - Curtis (Andy) McClellan, 60, went to be with the Lord Tuesday night (Oct. 24, 2000) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Andy retired from Westmoreland Coal Co. after 21 years of service as an electrician. He was president of U.M.W.A. Local 8181 and a Presbyterian by faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Monnie (Macnew) McClellan; and one sister, Leola Hillman.
Surviving are his wife, Linda McClellan, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and David Bradley, Toronto, Canada; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Ginny McClellan, Kingsport; one brother, Allen (Autrey) McClellan, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Ashley, Joseph, and Gavin McClellan, all of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Greene County, she had resided in Kingsport most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Delilah Jackson; five sisters, Beryl Armstrong, Ruth Grubbs, Clyde Jackson, Hazel White and Edith Hawkins; four brothers, Claude Jackson, Merle Jackson, Frank Jackson and Richard Jackson.

John Riley
BUTLER, Tenn. - John P. Riley, 81, died Wednesday (Oct. 25, 2000) in Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was a former resident of Clearwater, Fla. for 22 years and a son of the late James A. and Minnie A. Stone Riley Sr.
A retired sergeant major with the U.S. Army serving in World War II, he was in the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war. He was an Army recruiter in Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol, before retiring from the service with 26 years of service.
He was a member of the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in St. Petersburg, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years on Oct. 23, 1999, Mary Carmack Riley; one brother, James A. Riley Jr.; three sisters, Audrey Riley Rutherford, Lucille Riley and Minnie Lee Riley.
Surviving are two sisters, Martha Riley Griffin, Knoxville and Kathleen Riley Lipford and brother-in-law, Joseph Lipford, Butler; one brother, Paul P. Riley and sister-in-law, Ida Riley, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.
