PORTSMOUTH - Vernell Drake Scott, 69, of the 300 block of Carver Circle, died Aug. 29, 2007, in her home. Born in Beaufort, S.C., she was the widow of Willie Scott. She was a member of Prentis Park Seventh Day Adventist Church, Portsmouth, where she was a choir member, member of the prison ministry and nursing home ministry. She was a member of the I.C. Norcom Alumni Association, Portsmouth.
Surviving are a daughter, Kimya E. Johnson (Christopher); mother, Rebecca G. Drake, both of Portsmouth; two sisters, Sheryll Lundy (John) of Portsmouth and Leah D. Stith (S. Delacy) of Chesapeake; three brothers, Freddie L. Drake Jr. (Jacquie), the Rev. Johnnie J. Drake (Anna M.), all of Portsmouth and Robert Nichols of New York City; four grandchildren, Kayla, Eric, Naomi and Elijah, all of Portsmouth; and one aunt, two uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be held at noon Monday in New St. Thomas Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Pastor Armando Reid. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today. The family will be at the funeral home from 3 to 4 p.m. today. The family will be at the home of her sister, 4525 Miarfield Arch, Chesapeake.

Hattie R. Gaskins
VIRGINIA BEACH - Hattie Esther Riggs Gaskins, 93, went to be with the Lord Aug. 29, 2007. She was born Sept. 27, 1913, in Edenton, N.C., to the late James S. Riggs and Bertha B. Riggs.
Hattie graduated from Maury High School and Mary Washington College. She was a member of Ocean View Chapter 34, Order of the Eastern Star, MADD, Little Creek Woman’s Club, East Ocean View Cub Scouts and First Christian Church. She was employed at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in medical records and the police department as a clerk, retiring with more than 20 years of service. Hattie was a very devoted mother and loved her family deeply. She enjoyed gardening but especially loved baking cakes for her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Gaskins Sr.; her son, William S. Gaskins; and two sisters, Evelyn R. Ross and Lila R. Graf.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, James Gaskins Jr. and daughter, Linda Gaskins, both of Virginia Beach.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Granby Street.

Robert D. Vaughan
VIRGINIA BEACH- Robert Daniel Vaughan, 68, of the 5600 block of Ranger Court passed away Sept. 1, 2007, at Sentara Leigh Hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Vaughan served in the U.S. Air Force before joining the Norfolk Fire Department in 1960, retiring in 1975 after 15 years of service. He and his wife, Sandra Smith Vaughan owned and operated Kempsville Towing for the past 30 years.
Mr. Vaughan was preceded in death by his parents, Abiatha Willis and Claude Vaughan.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandra and three sons, Robert William Vaughan and his wife Carolyn of Chesapeake, Daniel Lee Vaughan and his wife Wendy of Norfolk and Darrin Smith Vaughan and his wife Hannah of Buckingham County.
Mr. Vaughan is also survived by nine grandchildren, Angela Vaughan Mulcahy and her husband John, John Robert Vaughan, Joshua Vaughan and his wife Rachel, Benjamin Vaughan, Daniel Vaughan, Rebecca Vaughan, Margaret Vaughan, Emily Vaughan and Alexander Vaughan; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Claudia Barnes and her husband Charles of Virginia Beach and Gerry Forbes and her husband Lyle of Indian Head, N.C.
Mr. Vaughan also leaves behind his father-in-law, William Smith and his wife Mary; sisters-in-law, Joyce Maciejewski and her husband Gil and Mary Dale and her husband Robert; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Florence L. Riggs
CHESAPEAKE - Florence Elizabeth Lingle Riggs, 93, of Plummer Drive in Deep Creek, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at the Winslow Memorial Home in Elizabeth City, N.C.
She was born March 28, 1914, in Canton, N.J., and was the daughter of the late Harvey Lingle and Bertha Turner Lingle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Morris Riggs on July 25, 1982, and her daughter, Lillian Holding Rountree.
She was a member of the Deep Creek Baptist Church, the Senior Choir and the Victory Sunday Class.
Survivors include her son, Robert H. Holding of Bridgeton, N.J., and her son-in-law, Wilson Rountree of Hertford, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous greatgreat-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home Chapel, 929 Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, with the Rev. Larry Ryals officiating.
Burial will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home, 929 Battlefield Blvd., from 12:30 p.m. Tuesday until the funeral hour and other times at the home of her son-in-law, Wilson Rountree, 118 Woodland Church Road, Hertford, N.C.

CHESAPEAKE - Katie Deans Twine, 88, of the 2200 block of Rodgers St., went to be with the Lord Sept. 2, 2007, in Chesapeake. A native of Wilson, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Eva Gurganus Deans and the wife of the late John B. “Jack” Twine Jr. She was a member of the Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church, the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Zulekia Court No. 35, and the Chesapeake Ladies Shrine Club.
Surviving are one son, Robert D. Twine and his wife Lauren of Chesapeake; a special niece and caregiver, Barbara Haynes of Chesapeake; one sister, Opal Boothe of Salem, Va.; one brother, John H. “Boots” Deans of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Robert D. Twine Jr., John B. Twine IV, David Decker and Steven Decker, all of Chesapeake; and four great-grandchildren, Ashley Szuba and Emily Szuba, both of Erie, Pa., and Julianna Twine and Kyla Sailor, both of Edenton, N.C. She was preceded in death by two sons, John Bagley Twine III and Jeffrey Thomas Twine and one granddaughter, Teresa Twine.

Latron Griffin
NORFOLK - Latron Griffin, 22, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 29, 2007.
He was predeceased by his grandfathers,
William Griffin and Samuel Peartree. He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Alice Griffin; his father, Lewis Hogan; three sisters, Latisha, Latosha and Dasha; three special friends, Phylicia, Venita and Keisha; grandmothers, Gloria Griffin, Mary Cotton and Carlene Peartree; and a host of other relatives and friends.

George Hill
NORFOLK - George Hill, 80, of the 800 block of Johnson Ave., passed away Aug. 30, 2007, in his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Hill; one daughter, two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Virginia L. Castillo
FRANKLIN - Virginia Lee Wilson Castillo, 82, formerly of Virginia Beach, died Sept. 1, 2007. She was born in Polk County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Clyde and Maude Lynch Wilson. Mrs. Castillo was predeceased by her husband, James Castillo; her son, James Edward Castillo; four sisters; and one brother. She was a real estate broker for 45 years and a member of Fox Hall Baptist Church.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Linda C. Smith and husband Ray of Franklin; three grandsons, Donald Ray Smith of Virginia Beach, Michael Lee Smith and wife Teresa of Franklin, Robert Christopher Smith and wife Rachel of Suffolk; and four great-grandchildren, Katlyn, Megan, Justin and Carlee Smith.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, Virginia Beach, with the Rev. Thomas Speight officiating. Paul Henry Borg
CHESAPEAKE - Paul Henry Borg, 72, of the 300 block of Bartell Drive, passed after a long illness at home on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007.
Born in Chicago, he was the youngest son of the late David T. and Lilly H. Anderson Borg. After 26 years of service, Mr. Borg retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a master gunnery sergeant. He served two tours in the Vietnam War. Mr. Borg also retired from a 20-year civil service career in the E-2 community. He loved God and was a long-standing member of the Great Bridge Baptist Church. In addition to being a strong Christian and true American patriot, Mr. Borg was also a devoted family man who adored his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Williams-Borg of Chesapeake; four children, Glenn D. Borg of Cary, N.C., Diana C. Borg of Jackson, Miss., Tamey M. Caires of London, Ohio, and Chris L. Williams and his wife Patricia I. of Chesapeake; and two grandchildren, Leslie A. Williams and Joshua K. Williams, both also of Chesapeake.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

Delfin P. Bernardo
CHESAPEAKE - Delfin Papa Bernardo, 51, of Arnold Court, passed away Sept. 2, 2007, in a Chesapeake hospital. He was a native of the Philippines and was a maintenance engineer.
He was formerly employed with Guille Steel and Southland Industries. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Elizabeth City, N.C., and the Philippine American Golf Association of Tidewater.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Gracie D. Bernardo; his father, Teodoro Bernardo of the Philippines; one daughter, Rachel Bernardo of Chesapeake; and one son, Ryan Bernardo of Chesapeake. He is also survived by six brothers, Ceferino Bernardo, Saturnino Bernardo, Victoriano Bernardo, Danilo Bernardo, Mario Bernardo and Teodorico Bernardo, all of the Philippines; and five sisters, Nancy Sandil, Marietta Bernardo, Marilou Bernardo, Marilin Bernardo and Rosalina Despues, all of the Philippines. He was predeceased by his mother, Teodora Bernardo and he was a loving husband and father and will be deeply missed.
The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. A wake will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
