Gayle Baker
JOHNSON CITY - Gayle L. Baker, 86, NHC Healthcare Center, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at her residence following a lengthy illness.
A native of Rogersville, Ms. Baker was a daughter of the late Dr. Garnie James Lane and Mary Kate Marsh Lane.
Ms. Baker was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Mayfair United Methodist Church.
Five brothers, one son, Charles Edward Baker and one great-granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth, preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Dr. William Baker and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, Johnson City and James B. Baker and daughter-in-law, Lynn, Chattanooga; one daughter, Nancy Baker Hodnett and son-in-law, Sam, Farragut; one brother, Dr. Donald Lane, Madison, Ga.; two sisters, Katherine Davis, Rogersville, and Bettie Sheelar, Lexington, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Glenn Hodnett and wife, Julie, Anderson, S.C., David Hodnett and wife, Patricia, Woodstock, Ga., Suzanne Hodnett Wold and husband, Jeff, Woodstock, Ga., Craig Baker and wife, Elizabeth, West Chester, Pa., Keith Baker and wife, Sarah, Durham, N.C., Kathie Baker, Johnson City and Steve Baker, Nashville; and four great-grandchildren, Robert Hodnett, Matthew Hodnett, David Ayers Hodnett and Laney Baker.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in the East Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Charles Ensminger officiating.
Committal services will follow in Washington County Memory Gardens.

Anthony Beeler
PADUCAH, Ky. - Anthony Ray (Tony) Beeler, 40, Lone Oak, passed away at 9:03 a.m. Tuesday (April 17, 2001) in the Lourdes Hospital.
Tony was supervisor for the U.S. Enrichment Corp. He was a 1978 graduate of Ketron High School and received a B.S. and Masters Degree in Manufacturing from East Tennessee State University. He was an avid fisherman, a wonderful husband and loving father.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Ann Carter Beeler, of the home; two daughters, Erin Amanda Beeler and Laura Jacqueline Beeler, both of Lone Oak; his parents, A. Don Beeler and Mabel Agnes Watson Beeler, Kingsport; a sister, Jackie Taylor, Kingsport; a brother, Sonny Beeler, Kingsport; paternal grandmother, Ila Beeler, Kingsport; his maternal grandmother, Dellie Watson, Knoxville; four nieces; one aunt and one uncle.

James (Jim) Cleek
KINGSPORT - James Franklin Cleek, 67, died Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at his home.
Mr. Cleek served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from East Tennessee State University where he majored in Fine Arts. He was a teacher for 26 years for the Cecil County Board of Education.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was a past president of Northeast Maryland Lions Club.
His parents, Warner H. Cleek Sr. and Myrtle Albright Cleek preceded him in death.
Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Nobeleen and Don Salyers, Kingsport; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and JoAnn Cleek, Jefferson City, Warner H. and Marie Cleek, Kingsport; six nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Marianne Culbertson, 88, went to be with the Lord Saturday (April 14, 2001) at Select Specialty Hospital, Bristol, Tenn. after an extended illness.
Born in Denver, Colo., she was the daughter of the late Aldolph and Carrie Sputh Smith. She was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
She was a homemaker and a member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are a son, Richard Culbertson and wife, Joy, Kingsport; sister, Genieve Tranberg, Roswell, N.M.; two granddaughters, Dr. Kim Culbertson, Smyrna, Tenn., and Kristen Blackburn, Wilmore, Ky.; a great-granddaughter, Madeline Blackburn; one niece and one nephew.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home with Pastor Tully Hunter officiating.

GRAY - William Guy 'Toby' Fitzgerald, 76, passed away Thursday (April 19, 2001) at the Appalachian Christian Village following a lengthy illness.
A native of Washington County, Tenn., he was a son of the late Clyde and Mary Elizabeth Ford Fitzgerald. He was a retired surveyor for the City of Johnson City.
Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of Hales Chapel Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Louise Fitzgerald.
Surviving are two sisters and their husbands, Patsy and Joe Sanders and Mary Lee and Guy Barron, Gray; two uncles, Andrew Fitzgerald and W.R. Ford, Gray; one aunt, Mrs. Ruby Almany, Gray; seven nieces and nephews and 10 great-nieces and nephews.

ROGERSVILLE - Beuna Smith Howe, 87, 207 Armstrong Road, died Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Rogersville after an extended illness.
She was a member of Westview Baptist Church and was a member of Hasson #179 Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Howe Sr.; an infant son, Douglas Lyons Howe; parents, John and Lizzie Allen Smith; two sisters, Till Matt Eidson and Edna Ward Collins.
Surviving are one daughter, Jewel Barker and husband, Bill of Rogersville; one son, J.E. Howe, Jr. and wife, Jo Ann, of Rogersville; granddaughter, Tammy Stratton and husband, Dudley of Kingsport; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Davis, Rogersville; brother, Guy Smith and wife, Margaret of Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Jones was a member of the Assembly of God of Rogersville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Blaine Jones, I; parents, Red and Jessie Hall; son, Melvin Blaine Jones, IV; and grandson, David Jones.
Surviving are sons, Michael G. Hall, Billy W. Jones, James R. (Champ) Jones and Steve E. Jones; daughters, Kathy D. Mayes and Katy Jarrett; one sister, Mary K. Stewart; two brothers, Albert (Jim) Hall and George A. Hall; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

CHURCH HILL - Mattie Lee Meade Kelly, 69, of Santa Fe, went to be with her Lord Thursday afternoon (April 19, 2001) at her residence.
She was born in Russell County, Va., and moved to this area in 1942. She was a graduate of Lynn View High School in 1949. She previously worked for Kingsport National Bank.
She was an active member of UCT and very action in other community organizations such as the Optimist Club, the Ruritan Club, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, volunteer for Clean Kingsport and the Kingsport Convention and Business Bureau. She was also a lifetime member of the PTA.
She attended Ketron Memorial United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Tedda Lynn Kelly; her parents, Theodore R. Meade and Nannie Lee Porter Meade; one brother, Theodore Meade.
Surviving are her husband, Gene Kelly, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty Crum and husband Mark and Jenny Seguin and husband Tom, all of Kingsport; one son and daughter-in-law, Randy Kelly and wife Nancy, Bloomington, Ill.; five grandchildren, Matthew Crum, Eric Seguin, Jackson Crum, Cory Seguin and Christopher Kelly; one sister and brother-in-law, Lois Meade Anderson and husband Charlie, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Liberty Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edd and Lotie Kite Kirkpatrick; three sisters, Nola Mae Kirkpatrick, Mary Bell Carpenter and Mable Mayes; two brothers, Harvey Kirkpatrick and Cotton Kirkpatrick.
Surviving are her husband after 61 years, Sam L. LAFOLLETTE, Tenn. - Lois Robinette Noel, 95, formerly of Kingsport, passed away Wednesday (April 18, 2001) in the St. Mary's of Campbell County Hospital in Lafollette, Tenn.
Lois was born Dec. 3, 1905 in Scott County, Va., and was the daughter of the late James Wesley and Martha Berry Robinette.
She was the widow of W.H. Noel.
Lois had lived in the Kingsport area for the past 60 years, and retired from Parks-Belk as manager of the shoe department.
Prior to failing health, she was an active member of Mafair United Methodist Church, where she did volunteer work for many years.
Other than her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughters, Lorraine Lee and Marion Mullins; brothers, Kelton Robinette and T. Robinette; sisters, Minnie Rogers and Georgia Tyler.
Survivors include her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Ann and Nick Thompson, Lafollette; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Scott Lee and his wife, Pat, Lafollette, David Mullins and his wife, Elizabeth, and a great-granddaughter, Sara Mullins, all of Ferrum, Va.; sons-in-law, J.W. Lee, Lafollette, and Harlan Mullins, Ferrum, Va.

BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Mary Lee Rogers, 76, went to be with the Lord Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at her home.
Born March 5, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Ervin and Jane Rhoton Childress. She was a member of Robinette's Chapel Central Baptist Church.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest K. Rogers; two brothers, Paul Childress and Anderson 'Hack' Childress.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Mae Rogers, Johnny Rogers and Hank and Kathy Rogers, all of Big Stone Gap, Va.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Myrtle Gilliam, Gate City, Va., and Wilhite Shupe, Duffield, Va.; two brothers, William B. Childress and June Childress, both of Kingsport and several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Mack R. Sams, 82, 1462 Willow St., died unexpectedly Wednesday evening (April 18, 2001) at his home.
A native of Hawkins County, he had resided in Sullivan County for over 50 years. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Philippine Islands.
Mr. Sams retired from J.P. Stevens after 47 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Boyd Sams; brothers, Howard Sams Sr., and Carl Sams, both formerly of Kingsport, Ecke Sams, formerly of Bristol, Va.; and his parents, Rice and Martha Pratt Sams.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Nelson (Valery) Barger and Mrs. John W. (Carolyn) Hutson, both of Kingsport; his beloved grandchildren, Mrs. David (Karen) Lovelace, Blountville, Mrs. Dean (Sherri) Athanasia, Wellesley, Mass., Tom Bradshaw, Kingsport; three great-grandchildren, Ryan Lovelace, Meghan Lovelace and Ellie Athanasia and one unborn great-grandchild; one step-granddaughter and three step great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Scott County, Va., but had lived in the Mendota, Va. area for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Edward Smith; two sons, Ralph W. Smith and Edward L. Smith, Jr.; one sister, Rosetta Salyer; two brothers, Roy L. Vicars and Crockett E. Vicars.
She was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Ellen Smith and Virginia Ruth Smith, both of Mendota; one brother and sister-in-law, Worley F. and Eva Vicars, Kingsport; two grandsons, Edward Lee Smith, Jr. and wife, Betsy, Raleigh, N.C., Daniel Roy Smith, Johnson City; one granddaughter, Patricia Smith Elledge and husband, David, Jonesborough; one great-grandson, Matthew Bowman Smith, Raleigh, N.C.; also surviving are one niece and four nephews; a special friend, James Sproles, Mendota.

JONESVILLE, Va. - John C. Stoneman Sr., 77, passed away Thursday (April 19, 2001) at his residence.
He had retired from public work in Maryland and was a World War II veteran serving in the Marines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Hattie Stoneman; five brothers, Billy, Dean, Jack, Van Haden and Scott Stoneman; and two sisters, Juanita and Rita Stoneman.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie (Detta) Stoneman, Jonesville, Va.; two sons, John C. Stoneman Jr., Jonesville, Va., and Stanley E.
