Benny Floyd Cox
WISE, Va. - Benny Floyd Cox, 52, died at his home Friday evening (Dec. 1, 2000) after a lengthy illness.
Before his illness, Benny was employed as a surface miner and as a motorcycle mechanic, and also as the manager of a motorcycle shop in Norton.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and motorcycle enthusiast before his illness, a ponderer and philosopher after it confirmed him to bed. Patient under his own illness, as well as under the illness of his son, Benny was beloved by all in his family and by most who knew him. As his wife said upon his death, 'There lies the biggest hearted man in the world.' All of us in the room felt that sentiment echo in our own hearts. If any of us have hopes of a wonderful afterlife, then Benny certainly does.
Benny was converted on Sunday (Oct. 22, 1978) when Ben Powers was preaching at the Indian Creek Freewill Baptist Church. His wife, Alice, was converted at the same service and they were thereafter baptized together. Benny recently reconfirmed his faith when talking with his grandmother, Susie Cox. He knew that he was living in eternity then, and that he always would be.
Husband, father, son and brother, Benny will be forever missed, but his pain has ended, and for that, we are thankful. He told Alice he was not afraid to die, he was more afraid of continuing in such pain and misery. He told her his death would be like closing his eyes and then opening them, though a hundred years may pass between the closing and the opening. Rest well, beloved brother, and may you see all faces dear to you when you once more open your eyes.
Benny was preceded in death by one daughter, Bennye Helen Cox; maternal grandparents, Myrtle and Denver Short; and paternal grandfather, Ottis Cox.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Blevins Cox; one daughter, September Cox; and his son, Samuel Lee Cox, all of the home.
Also surviving are his parents, Helen and Carroll Cox, Pound; brother, John Cox, Pound; two sisters Leah Bullion, Norton, and Katherine Mullins, Wise; paternal grandmother, Susie Riner Cox, Pound; and many beloved nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts, on both sides of the family.
