Rhodia M. S. Bolin
Rhodia Marin Slate Bolin of Columbia died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000. She was 91. Mrs. Bolin was born Feb. 13, 1909, in Hartsburg to James Thomas and Lydia Mae Sappington Bledsoe. In 1930, she married Archie Slate, who died in 1963. In 1969, she then married Francie Bolin, who died in 1982.
She was a member of Smith's Chapel Methodist Church and was a caregiver for the elderly for many years.
"My mother was quite an active person in church and the community," her son Donnie Slate said. "She was a strong person and when she had an idea, she carried it through. She liked fundraising for the church and for the community. Her life surrounded her family and friends."
Mrs. Bolin was also a member of Arnette Buzy Bee Club, where neighbors hosted the University Extension's classes on topics that included home care of the sick, landscaping and canning.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St. Mrs. Bolin will be buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Ashland.
She is survived by her daughter, Louise Black of Columbia; and four sons, Donnie Slate of Columbia, Ned Slate of Lafayette, Ind., Roger Slate of Rocheport and Ted Slate of Kokomo, Ind.; a brother, Lawrence Bledsoe of Columbia; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchilden.
Seven sisters and one brother died earlier.
Doris 'Corky' Pestle
Doris "Corky" Pestle of Columbia died Wednesday, Aug. 9. She was 71. Mrs. Pestle was born Aug. 3, 1929, in Lansing, Mich., to Perry James and Mary Jane Simons Drury. On June 27, 1953, she married Jack Pestle in Lansing.
She was a mother and homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church and the Eastern Star.
Visitation for Mrs. Pestle will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. She will be buried in a private ceremony at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Pestle is survived by her husband, Jack Pestle of Columbia; two sons, James Pestle and Jack Pestle, both of Columbia; a daughter, Jody Pestle of Columbia; two brothers, Harry Drury of Lake, Mich. and David Drury of Sunfield, Mich.; two sisters, Janice Morey of Holt, Mich., and Jane Kimball of Grand Blanc, Mich.; and five grandchildren. One brother and two sisters died earlier.

Floyd Earl Henry
Floyd Earl "Preach" Henry, a mail carrier for more than 31 years, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2000. He was 67.
Mr. Henry was born April 28, 1933, in Alton, Ill., to Roy and Thelma Opal Toalson. He graduated from Hickman High School in 1951. Mr. Henry served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War for four years. On May 19, 1955, he married Mary Lou Green in Columbia.
Mr. Henry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 202 for 25 years, and served as business manager and post commander. He was one of the founders of the Diamond Council and was a life member of VFW Post No. 280.
Visitation for Mr. Henry will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Graveside services, conducted by Jim Cunningham, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Henry is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Henry of Columbia; three sons, Greg Henry of Aurora, Colo., Bill Henry of Holts Summit and Jeff Henry of St. Charles; a brother, Jessie Hank Henry of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Betty Joyce McGee of Columbia; and three grandchildren.
A daughter and a sister died earlier.

Leo J. Garrett
Leo J. Garrett of Columbia died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center. He was 82.
Mr. Garrett was born Jan. 27, 1918, in Columbia to Grover C. and Bertha Lee McKenzie Garrett. He married Stella Herron in Salina, Kan., on Feb. 12, 1944.
Mr. Garrett served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a Hall of Fame bowler.
Visitation for Mr. Garrett will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services, conducted by the Rev. Fred Neiger, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Home. He will be buried at Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.
Mr. Garrett is survived by his wife, Stella Garrett of Columbia; a daughter, Janice L. Pickett of Columbia; and two grandchildren, Jeff Pickett of Sioux Falls, S. D., and Ronda Pickett of Columbia.

Nobel B. Maddux
Nobel B. Maddux of Columbia died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at his home. He was 86.
Mr. Maddux was born Sept. 30, 1913, in Centralia to Ara T. and Genie Roberts Maddux. On Feb. 25, 1934, he married Ruby Caldwell.
Mr. Maddux retired from Panhandle Eastern in Centralia in 1973 after working there for 38 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Centralia. He served in North Africa during World War II with the Seabees.
Visitation for Mr. Maddux will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Meador and Son Funeral Home, Sneed and Rollins Street, in Centralia. Services, conducted by the Rev. Ed Varnum, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Meador and Son Funeral Chapel. will be buried at the City of Centralia Cemetery.
Mr. Maddux is survived by his wife, Ruby Maddux; one son, Nobel B. Maddux Jr. of Wimauma, Fla.; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Frank Green
Frank Green of Boonville died on Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at Riverdell Care Center in Boonville. He was 79.
Mr. Green was born on Aug. 26, 1920, in St. Joseph to John and Mary Campers Green.
Mr. Green worked in the military, and was married to Jean Lee Barker. He lived in the Sturgeon Rest Home for the past few years.
He will be buried at 11 a.m. Thursday, after graveside services at Columbia Cemetery.
He is survived by his father, John Green; his brother, James Green of Independence; two sisters, Goldie Leaboe and Dora Swope, both of Kingston.
His wife died earlier.
Lorane G. Vanlandingham
Lorane G. Vanlandingham of Columbia died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at her home. She was 86.
Mrs. Vanlandingham was born on May 27, 1914, in Wilton to Fred W. and Belle Sapp Glascock.
She was a member of First Christian Church. Mrs. Vanlandingham graduated from Ashland High School and received a teaching certificate from Central Missouri State College. She taught school in Ashland and Sapp. She married Arthur Basey Vanlandingham on Dec. 31, 1939.
Visitation will be at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St., between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. today.
Services conducted by the Rev. John Yonker will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday. She will be buried at Columbia Cemetery, 30 E. Broadway in Columbia.
She is survived by her daughter, B.L. Vanlandingham Hall of Topeka; two sons, A.B. Vanlandingham and Forrest Barry Vanlandingham, both of Columbia; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Her husband, one sister, and five brothers died earlier.

Willis H. Jacobs
Willis H. Jacobs of Columbia died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at University Hospital and Clinics. He was 80.
Mr. Jacobs was born on May 28, 1920, in Columbia to Marvin M. and Myrtie Campbell Jacobs. He was active at the Columbia Senior Center and a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
Mr. Jacobs served in the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II.
He was married to Marjorie Schulte for 25 years.
Services for Mr. Jacobs will be today at 2 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, 7461 N. Brown Station Rd. Visitation was Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., Columbia.
Mr. Jacobs will be buried at Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.
He is survived by his son, Jack Jacobs of Smith Mills, Ky.; one brother, Jerry C. Jacobs of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; two sisters, Naomi Smith of Columbia and Arlone Kallenbach of Doniphan; his fiancee, Mildred Robertson of Columbia; two grandsons, Jay Jacobs of Newburgh, Ind., and John Jacobs of Smith Mills, Ky.; and a great-granddaughter, Aysia Brooke Jacobs of Smith Mills, Ky.

Gordon E. French
Gordon Everett French of Columbia died July 24, 2000, at University Hospitals and Clinics. He was 74.
Mr. French was born on April 24, 1926, in Ontario, Canada, to Isiah and Mable French. He resided for many years in Los Angeles, and moved to Columbia in 1989.
Visitation for Mr. French will be from 8 to 10 a.m. today at Warren Funeral Chapel, 10 N. Fourth St.
Graveside services, conducted by the Rev. Ray Warren, will be at 11 a.m. today at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in New Franklin. Burial will follow.
Mr. French is survived by two daughters, Debra Barbour of Columbia and Phillipa Jackson of Los Angeles; two sisters, Dinia Morris of Ontario, Canada, and Kathleen VanHooser of London, Ontario, Canada; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

J.D. Marsh
J.D. Marsh of Albany, Mo., died Sunday Aug. 6, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 76. Mr. Marsh was born March 29, 1924, in Berlin, to John C. and Delphia P. Marsh. He married Aleene Batson on Sept. 21, 1968.
Marsh was an insurance agent for Combined Insurance for 10 years. He worked for 17 years as an ambulance driver and physical therapist at the Gentry County Memorial Hospital in Albany before his retirement.
Mr. Marsh graduated from Union Star High School in 1942 and went on to attend the Chillicothe Business School in Chillicothe. Marsh served in the Army Air Corp during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 106 in Albany.
Visitation for Mr. Marsh was Monday at the Roberson-Polley Chapel in Albany. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Roberson-Polley Chapel, 403 North Hundley, in Albany. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery in Albany.
Mr. Marsh is survived by his wife; four sons, Terry Marsh of Ravenwood, Jerry Batson of Gallatin, Bill Batson of Albany, Bobby Batson of Albany; three daughters, Cathy Marsh Asbury of Prairie Home, Deborah Marsh Sanger of St. Joseph, Linda Whitaker of Albany; one brother, Caspar Marsh of Union Star; 21 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Silas Woodson "Woody" Longan Jr.
Silas Woodson "Woody" Longan Jr. loved movie theaters, and he continued working in them until he was 85.
"He just didn't want to give it up," said his wife Betty.
Mr. Longan died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Columbia Healthcare and Rehab. He was 87.
Mr. Longan worked at Dickinson Theaters and Republic Pictures in Kansas City before moving to Columbia. Although he was technically retired, Mr. Longan began working at the Columbia Mall Four Theater, said his friend Vic Bayer.
"He was very loyal in his work," Bayer said.
Mr. Longan was born Jan. 17, 1913, in Kansas City to Bessie and Silas W. Longan Sr. He married Betty Lampone on May 16, 1964, in Kansas City.
Betty Longan said her husband was fascinated with the lives of stars. His daughter Vickie Black said as part of his job with Republic Pictures in Kansas City, he ran a limousine service to drive movie stars around when they were in town for premieres. Once he picked up Clint Eastwood and spent the evening drinking beer with him.
"I got to meet him the next day, and he said, 'I'm sorry for keeping your husband out so late last night,'" Betty Longan said.
Betty Longan said she and her husband always either worked in the same place or close enough so that they could ride to work together.
"He was just the finest, most generous man," Betty Longan said. "Nothing was too good for me. He was such a great husband. He was a wonderful father to his children, and when we got married, he was an absolutely wonderful stepfather to my kids."
Black remembers her father as a "kind and gentle man."
"When we were kids, he always took us to screenings to see new movies," Black said. "It was a fun time. That's the main part of my memories - we never had to pay to get into movies."
Mr. Longan is survived by his wife Betty; a son, Silas Woodson Longan of Leawood, Kan.; a daughter, Vicki Black of Hutchinson, Kan.; three stepsons, Jerry Cox and Steve Lampone, both of Kansas City, and Mike Cox of Columbia; a stepdaughter, Merideth Strawn of Columbia; a brother, George Longan of Medina, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Two sisters and a granddaughter died earlier.
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Nilson Funeral Home, 5611 Saint Charles Road.

David W. Johnmeyer
To his wife Karen, David W. Johnmeyer was "a plain old guy who liked to sit out on the porch." Mr. Johnmeyer of Columbia died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center after undergoing heart surgery 13 days before. He was 54.
Mr. Johnmeyer was an avid sports fan. His wife said he loved to sit on his recliner and watch football games. He also found time for his family.
"He loved his grandchildren and they always came first," said his wife, Karen.
Mr. Johnmeyer was born April 20, 1946, in Boonville to Casper and Florence Schilb Johnmeyer. He married Karen Clemens in Rocheport on Nov. 24, 1968.
He served in the Air Force and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam war with his wife and baby.

Norma Burnett
Norma Burnett of Columbia died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Boone Retirement Center. She was 74. Mrs. Burnett was born Oct. 18, 1925, in McBaine to Henry Powers and Ada Bond Grindstaff. She married Lonnie Burnett on May 5, 1944, in Boone County and he died on July 29, 1971.
She is survived by two sons, Edward Carleton Burnett and Randall Nelson Burnett, both of Columbia; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Burnett of Columbia; a brother, Henry Carlton Powers of Huntsdale; a sister, Hilda Sapp of Columbia; five grandchildren and two great-granchildren.

Beverly A. Underhill
Beverly Ann Underhill of Columbia died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at her home from cancer. She was 51. She was employed by Square D Electric Co. for six years and worked at Quaker Oats Co. for the past three years.
Mrs. Underhill was born May 28, 1949, in Hannibal to Robert and Mabel Irene Garner Caldwell. She attended Monroe City Schools and graduated from the Monroe City High School in 1967. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Monroe City.
She married Raymond Paul Underhill on Sept. 23, 1967, and they owned the Underhill Tavern in Monroe City for several years.
Mrs. Underhill moved to Columbia in 1980 after her husband's death in 1979.
Visitation for Mrs. Underhill will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Garner Funeral Chapel, 315 North Vine St., Monroe City. Services, conducted by Father Mike Quinn, will follow a. Mrs. Underwood will be buried in the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Monroe City.
Mrs. Underhill is survived by her father; a daughter, Dena Meissert of Columbia; a son, Brad Underhill of Columbia; two grandchildren, Jessica and Alisha Durham, both of Columbia; one sister, Barbara Coffman of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; and one brother, Robert Caldwell of Ashland.

Jo Ann Slate
Jo Ann Slate of Columbia died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at University Hospital and Clinics. She was 59.
Mrs. Slate was born June 9, 1941, in St. Louis to James Key Jr. and Frances Merry Key. She married Melvin Bowling in Macon in 1958. After the death of her first husband, she married Harry Hall Slate in 1962 in Boone County.
Visitation for Mrs. Slate was Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home. Services, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Skinner, will be at 2 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Mrs. Slate's body will be buried at Columbia Cemetery.
Mrs. Slate is survived by five daughters, Peggy Simms, Betty Smith, Billie Slate and Bobbi Slate, all of Columbia, and Coleta Russo of Tebbets; two brothers, James Key of Centralia and John Samuel Minor of Macon; two step brothers, Larry Minor of Kentucky and James Minor of Chicago; and nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Emory Odell Jones
Emory Odell Jones of Columbia died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at his home. He was 71.
Mr. Jones was born in June 2, 1929, in Roanoke, Texas. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in agriculture in 1955 and 1957 Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. In 1951, while attending KSU, Mr. Emory married Anna Wright.
Mr. Jones was employed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service for 26 years. He retired in 1990.
He was a devoted member of Sugar Grove Missionary Baptist Church for 27 years. He was president of the Deacon Board and church treasurer.
Mr. Jones was an avid bowler. He bowled in 14 leagues, served as the president of the Columbia Bowling Association for the past 18 years and as secretary of the local hall of fame for 18 years. He also served as president of the Missouri State Bowling Association from 1989 to 1990. He was elected to the State Board in 1982. He was awarded Director of the Year in 1995 and inducted into the Columbia Bowling Hall of Fame in 1995.
Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was awarded the Bronze Medal of Honor. He served briefly as a member of the Board of Directors of the Columbia Senior Citizens Organization.
Visitation for Mr. Jones will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Second Baptist Church, 407 E. Broadway. Services, conducted by the Rev. Harry Williams, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Second Baptist Church.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of Columbia; two sons, Michael Jones and Mark Jones of Houston; one daughter, Michele Jones of Slidell, La.; two brothers, Bobby Jones of Ft. Worth and William Jones of Iowa City, Iowa; six grandchildren; and three nieces and a nephew.
