Clarence Klingner
Clarence Klingner died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Grandview Healthcare in Washington, Mo. He was 91.
Mr. Klingner was born Sept. 25, 1910, in Radiant, Colo., to Charles E. Klingner and Euphie Morrow Klingner.
He graduated from Fair Grove High School in Fair Grove in 1929. He received a bachelor's degree in 1935 and a master's degree in agricultural economics in 1949 from MU. He did further graduate work at Southwest Missouri State University, Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin.
On June 6, 1935, he married Geraldine White in Ash Grove. She died in 1984. He married Beulah Mason in Neosho on June 21, 1986.
Mr. Klingner worked as county extension agent in Gasconade County from 1934 to 1943 and in Franklin County from 1943 to 1946.
In 1946, Mr. Klingner returned to MU as a professor and taught agricultural economics until 1974. He also worked as a loan officer at the First Bank of Commerce in Columbia from 1975 to 1988.
V. James Rhodes, former chairman of the agricultural economics department, said Mr. Klingner loved working with people.
"He was very easy to get along with," Rhodes said.
He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church. "He was really a caretaker," his daughter Janet Thayer of Washington said.
"He took care of his parents when they were ill, and he took care of my mother when she was ill, as well as his second wife," she said. "He was very devoted to both wives."
"His integrity and credibility was the very best," Frank Graham, a childhood friend, said. "He was very approachable. He always understood and helped others."
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Missouri United Methodist Church, 204 S. Ninth St. Services, conducted by the Rev. Jim Bryan, will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in McMurry Chapel at Missouri United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Janet Thayer of Washington, and Constance "Connie" Marshall of Louisburg, Kan.; a brother, Fred Klingner of Charlotte, N.C; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
His second wife and two brothers, William Klingner and Thomas Klingner, died earlier.

Juanita Jane McBride
"I'll help you cross if you wish to go." Juanita Jane McBride embodied these words of the poem "Somebody's Mother" by Mary Dow Brine, said her husband, Jack McBride of Fulton. "Whatever your needs were, my wife was there."
Mrs. McBride died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Callaway Community Hospital in Fulton. She was 70.
Jack McBride said his wife's passion was her six children. She always wanted them to "be the best they could be," he said. He said she also served as a foster mother to a troubled young man until he graduated from high school.
Mrs. McBride was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Fulton and served as the church coordinator for events for The Fulton Sun newspaper. She also sang with the junior and ladies choirs.
Mrs. McBride was born June 22, 1931, in Callaway County to James E. Vaughn and Ethel L. Smallwood Vaughn. She attended Carver Elementary School in Fulton and graduated from Lincoln University Laboratory High School in Jefferson City. On Sept. 6, 1948, she married Virgil D. "Jack" McBride.
Visitation for Mrs. McBride will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church, Bluff and Sixth streets in Fulton. Services, conducted by the Rev. William A. Givens and the Rev. C. W. Dawson Jr., will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at Southside Cemetery in Fulton.
Mrs. McBride is survived by her husband; two sons, Ron J. McBride and Virgil D. McBride Jr., both of St. Louis; a foster son, Daniel Collier of Kansas City; four daughters, Anna Braxton of Fulton, Francelle Watson of Lee's Summit, and Bonnie McBride Cason and Sherry Brown, both of Columbia; one brother, William Howard Vaughn of Kansas City; three sisters, Louise Wiggins and Goldie Vaughn, both of Fulton, and Thelma Colbert of Kansas City; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two brothers and one sister died earlier.

Patricia Z.Wheeler
Patricia Zoann Wheeler of Centralia died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Heritage Hall Nursing Center in Centralia. She was 72.
She was born April 19, 1929, in Randolph County to Jesse and Etheta Martha Marshall Stringer. She graduated from Moberly High School in 1947. On May 31, 1952, she married Kenith Ray Wheeler. They later divorced. Mrs. Wheeler graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in St. Louis and worked as a registered nurse until she had children.
Her family said both roles fit her well because she loved people.
"She was always interested in people," Kenith Wheeler of Centralia, her ex-husband, said. "She saw people differently."
Mrs. Wheeler also had a strong interest in education, art and classical music, said her daughter, Cara Lopez of Wichita, Kan. Mrs. Wheeler was a member of First Christian Church.
"She was a good Samaritan," Lopez said. "She always took people in. She raised three children and helped raise three grandchildren."
Visitation was held Thursday. Services, conducted by the Rev. Ed Varnum, will be at 1 p.m. today at the First Christian Church, 229 S. Rollins St. in Centralia. Interment will be in the Salt River Cemetery, east of Centralia.
Mrs. Wheeler is survived by her ex-husband; two daughters, Cara Lynn Lopez of Wichita, Kan., and Rosalee Elizabeth Zackula of Columbia; a son, Steven Wheeler of Wichita; three grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a brother, Marshall Cooper Stringer of Centralia.

Olivert C. Vinson
Olivert Castile Vinson of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002. She was 87.
Mrs. Vinson was born Dec. 5, 1914, in Smithville, Texas, to Daniel and Frances Poe Annan Castile. Mrs. Vinson married Chalmers Vinson on June 27, 1940.
From 1940 to 1948, Mrs. Vinson served as a missionary in China. She studied at Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va., as an undergraduate and earned her masters degree in teaching and reading from Appalachian State University.
She taught sixth grade at Carver School in Laurel Hill, N.C., for 10 years.
Mrs. Vinson moved to Columbia in 1988 from Banner Elk, N.C. While here, Mrs.Vinson was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church and Community Bible Study.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1600 W. Rollins Road. Services, conducted by the Rev. Raymond I. Massey, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church.
Mrs. Vinson is survived by two sons, Daniel Vinson of Columbia and Tom Vinson of Tulsa, Okla.
Her husband and one sister died earlier.
William Padilla
William Padilla of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at South Hampton Place. He was 78.
Mr. Padilla was born Oct. 15, 1923, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico to Mercedes Acosta.
He was an employee of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center for 35 years.
Mr. Padilla is survived by his brother, Frank Mari of Brooklyn, N.Y.
The memorial service will be held at a later date.

Garry Don Wright
Garry Don Wright of Leawood, Kan., died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Menorah Medical Center. He was 58.
Mr. Wright was born Feb. 5, 1943, in Hallsville, to C.Q. and Mary Helen Wright. He graduated from Hallsville High School in 1961. He attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg and MU, where he became a lifelong Tiger fan. He moved his family to Kansas City in 1971 to begin a sales career.
Mr. Wright was a salesman at 3M, Electronic Business Equipment and Northern Telecom. He then joined RISCO in 1984. Under his leadership, RISCO grew from eight employees to more than 100. RISCO was acquired by Fidelity National Financial, which named Mr. Wright an executive vice president. Mr. Wright was also involved in numerous philanthropic efforts and supported the arts.
Visitation for Mr. Wright will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at McGilley Memorial Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas More Church, 11822 Holmes Road, Kansas City. Burial will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City.
Mr. Wright is survived by his wife and best friend of 23 years, Marilynn Wright; his mother, Mary Helen Wright of Hallsville; a sister Marilyn of Hallsville; his twin brother Larry Wright of Hallsville; a daughter Gara Wright of Nashville; two sons, Grant Wright of Overland Park, Kan. and Greg Wright of Atlanta; a stepdaughter Kim Owens of Shawnee, Kan.; a stepson Christopher Gramlich Sr. of Dallas; seven grandchildren; and his business mentor, Jerome Cohen of Kansas City.

Mildred Palmer
Mildred Given Palmer of Centralia died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at her home. She was 77.
Mrs. Palmer was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Audrain County to David Maurice and Catherine Murphy Given. On Jan. 14, 1955, she married Charles P. Palmer Jr. in St. Louis. She graduated from Centralia High School. She served as president of Centralia Preschool, PTA, Band Parents and Panther Boosters.
Mrs. Palmer worked at the A.B. Chance Company, Chemical Farmways Services and Centralia Country Club. She also worked with J.W. Stone and USDA Rural Development.
Visitation for Mrs. Palmer will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Meador and Son Funeral Home, Rollins and Sneed streets in Centralia. Services, conducted by the Rev. Ed Varnum, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Meador and Son Chapel. Burial will be in the City of Centralia Cemetery.
Mrs. Palmer is survived by her husband, of Centralia; a son, Charles P. Palmer III, and his wife, Cathy Palmer, both of Houston, Texas; and two grandsons, Charles Connor Palmer and Cody Payne Palmer, both of Houston.

Ernest Ray Cramer
Ernest Ray Cramer of Columbia died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia. He was 77.
Mr. Cramer was born June 8, 1924, in Sedalia to Charles E. Cramer and Clara Edith Kuppinger. On June 22, 1947, he married Rosemary Schulte in Chicago.
Mr. Cramer served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 and in the Navy Reserves for 16 years. After retiring from the Reserves as lieutenant commander, he worked for Gulf Oil until he retired in 1982.
Mr. Cramer is survived by his wife; three sons, Dale Cramer and Gary Cramer of Columbia and Robert Cramer of Perryville; two daughters, Mary Jo Cramer of Crestwood and Kathy Cahill of Kokomo, Ind.; two brothers, Ervin Cramer of Omaha, Neb., and Gene Cramer of Phoenix; two sisters, Dorothy Davis of Columbia and Geneva Smith of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
One brother died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m today at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services, conducted by Monsignor Michael Flanagan, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 903 Bernadette Drive. Burial will be at Peninsula Cemetery in Blackwater.
Ruth Dometrorch
Edna "Ruth" Dometrorch of Fayette died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Fayette Nursing and Rehabilitation in Fayette. She was 90.
Mrs. Dometrorch was born Jan. 2, 1912, in Howard County to Hyatt and Teresa Todd. She married John Dometrorch on July 16, 1949, in Howard County.
Mrs. Dometrorch was a retired cook with the Fayette Public Schools. She served lunch there for about 20 years and retired about 15 years ago, said her son, George Goodson.
"She was a remarkable crossword-puzzle doer," Goodson said. He also said she loved to read and enjoyed gardening. Mrs. Dometrorch was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fayette.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, John C. Dometrorch and George Goodson, both of Fayette; and two grandchildren, Travis Dometrorch and D.J Dometrorch, both of Fayette.
Two sisters, Dee Jackson and Crystal Hampton, and twin granddaughters died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Carr-Yager Funeral Home, 204 N. Linn St. in Fayette. A graveside service, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Settle, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fayette City Cemetery.
Fannie B. Jacobs
Fannie Barnes Jacobs of Columbia died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Ashland Health Care Center. She was 88.
Mrs. Jacobs was born March 6, 1913, in Boone County to Abb Clark and Nannie Elizabeth George Barnes. On Jan. 25, 1935, she married Euel Logan Jacobs.
"Her whole life was surrounded by children, her church and her family," said her daughter, Sharon Adams of Ashland. Mrs. Jacobs was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was in charge of nursery services.
Mrs. Jacobs was the first licensed day care provider in Boone County, and she continued the practice for more than 40 years Adams said.
"She loved children," said her sister-in-law, Helen Barnes.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m today at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services, conducted by the Revs. Webster Brown and Gary Smith, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home. She will be buried at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Jacobs is survived by two daughters, Shirley J. Franklin of Madison, Va., and Sharon L. Adams of Ashland; a son, Daniel W. Jacobs of Columbia; a brother, Cecil R. Barnes of Columbia; three granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.
Her husband; four brothers, Wilbur Barnes, Floyd Barnes, George Barnes and A.C. Barnes; and two sisters, Beulah Johnson and Mildred Reynolds, died earlier.

Aubrey T. Long
Aubrey Thomas Long of Columbia died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center. He was 85.
Mr. Long was born Sept. 2, 1916, in Wooodlandville to Roy Hagen and Lena Anna Coffman Long. On Feb. 26, 1945, Mr. Long married Myrtle Carolyn Ehler on Feb. 26, 1945, in Centralia.
Mr. Long worked for many years as a bookkeeper. He started building homes in 1958 until his retirement in 1982. He attended the First Assembly of God Church and Christian Chapel--Assembly of God.
He is survived by three sons, Wayne Long of Oklahoma City, Wendell Long of Pickerington, Ohio, and Dennis Long of Columbia; a daughter, Donna McMinn of Columbia; two sisters, Lucille Ferguson of Columbia and Mary Davies of Hallsville; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
His wife; two brothers, Ralph Long and Rufus Long; and a sister, Opal Taitenger, died earlier.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Christian Chapel, 3300 S. Providence Road. Services conducted by the Rev. Gary Denbow will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Christian Chapel. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.
W. Calverin Poff
W. Calverin "Cal" Poff of Columbia died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at his home. He was 80.
Mr. Poff was "a Baptist preacher and a good guy," said his sister, Opal Ruth Forman of Mexico, Mo. He loved to play golf and would get together with a few guys just about every day to play, Forman said.
He was born Aug. 14, 1921, in Audrain County to Linnie Cleeton and Larkin Poff. He married Allene L. Dollens on May 25, 1940, in Mexico.
He was a World War II Army veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Poff was a retired Southern Baptist minister and served Clark Baptist Church, Sulphur Springs, Harrisburg, Perche Church and New Providence Baptist Church. He was retired from Shelter Insurance Company, where he was an auto insurance underwriter. Mr. Poff was a member of the New Providence Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Donna Ellen Pulis of Concordia; two sons, Gary Wade Poff of Jefferson City and Estil Dean Poff of Columbia; a brother, Lyndall Fay Poff of Columbia; three sisters; Essilee Hinten of Joplin, and Opal Ruth Forman and Ella Fern Brown, both of Mexico; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Nilson Funeral Home, 5611 St. Charles Road.
Services, conducted by the Revs. Jessie Barnhart and Gary Humphrey, will be at 2 p.m. at Nilson Funeral Home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, 1217 Business Loop 70.

Effie Mae Old
Effie Mae Old of Ashland died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, in her home. She was 98.
Mrs. Old was born Dec. 20, 1903, in Hartsburg to William and Martha Nichols Blythe. On Dec. 12, 1925, she married Willis "Owen" Old in Jefferson City.
Mrs. Old belonged to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Hartsburg until 1957 when she joined Ashland Baptist Church. She also was a member of the Friendship Club of Hartsburg.
Mrs. Old is survived by her son, Willie Old of Hartsburg; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband, daughter, brother and two sisters died earlier.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home, 601 N. Henry Clay Blvd. in Ashland. Services, conducted by the Rev. Jim West, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ashland Baptist Church. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Hartsburg.

Elva Mae Toalson
Elva Mae Toalson of Ashland died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Ashland Healthcare. She was 94.
Mrs. Toalson was born May 10, 1907, in Boone County to Ula Gates Thomas and Hattie Rice Thomas. She married Oscar Toalson on June 19, 1931.
She was a member of the Nashville Baptist Church in Ashland for more than 50 years.
No visitation will be held. Services, conducted by the Revs. Bart Tichenor and Kevin Collins, will be at 1 p.m. today at Nashville Baptist Church, Route N, Nashville Church Road, in Ashland. Burial will be at Nashville Cemetery.
Ms. Toalson is survived by her son, Harold Toalson of Columbia; and one grandson.
Her husband and five brothers died earlier.

Lauren Jordan
Lauren Nannette Jordan of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at University Hospital. She was 35.
Ms. Jordan was born April 9, 1966, in Columbia to Herbert L. and Nettie Stephens Jordan.
She graduated from Hickman High School in 1984. She worked for 10 years in the Distribution Department at University Hospital and was a tutor at St. Luke United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Warren Funeral Chapel, 12 E. Ash St. Services, conducted by the Rev. Raymond W. Hayes, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 204 E. Ash St. Burial will be at Log Providence Cemetery in Columbia.
Ms. Jordan is survived by one daughter, Takaira K. Jordan of Columbia; one son, Treyon K. Jordan of Columbia; her parents, of Columbia; four sisters, Peyton Jordan, Joann Jordan, Karen J. Ware and Arnita Jordan, all of Columbia; eight brothers, Alan Jordan of Lees Summit, Robert Jordan, Herbert Jordan Jr., Maurice Jordan, Kevin Jordan, Marlon Jordan, Bruce Stephens and Darrell Jordan, all of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews, all of Columbia.

Ruth DeLano Scherr
Ruth DeLano Scherr of Jefferson City died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged. She was 97.
She was born Feb. 6, 1904, in Fulton, Kan., to Leigh Dewitt and Margaret Irvine DeLano. On June 15, 1927, she married Elliott Brown Scherr in Fulton. Mrs. Scherr attended Stephens College from 1920 to 1923 and received an associate's degree. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas in 1925. In 1929, after her husband joined the Spanish department at MU, she obtained her teaching certificate there.
In the mid-1940s, she taught religious education at the Columbia Public Schools. She was later a librarian at Stephens until 1953. She then worked for the Missouri State Historical Society. She retired in 1974.
Mrs. Scherr was president of the Missouri Fortnightly Club and the Columbia Council of Churchwomen in the 1940s. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia from 1929 to 1999. She moved to Heisinger Lutheran Home in Jefferson City in August 1998 and became a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Jefferson City.
Mrs. Scherr is survived by a son, David DeLano Scherr of Jefferson City; two sisters, Dorothy Hudson of Fort Scott, Kan., and Elizabeth McCowan of Jefferson City; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Her husband died earlier.
Services, conducted by the Rev. David Conley, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors Jefferson City Chapel, 2613 W. Main St. Visitation will follow the service. Graveside services and interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery in Fulton.
