Frederic Henry Curtis
Although Frederic Henry Curtis spent his final days in Rockford, Ill., he was an MU Tiger fan until the end. A wreath on the outside of his nursing-home door housed a stuffed Truman the Tiger and read "Tiger Country."
"Nothing was more dear to his heart than the University of Missouri Tigers," said his daughter, Pat Belzey. "I don't think he liked anyone in the family better than he liked the Tigers."
Mr. Curtis died on Monday, June 21, 1999, at Cor Mariae Center in Rockford. He was 84.
Mr. Curtis was born on April 4, 1915, in Carrollton to Frederick Hamilton Curtis and Mabel Maureen Miller Curtis. On September 3, 1938, he married Betty Marie Mathews in St. Louis.
Mr. Curtis was an active Mason. He was the Master of the Euclid/Magnolia Lodge 636 in St. Louis. He then became founder and Master of the Florissant Lodge 668 and was later the Master of the Hallsville Lodge 336.
He was also a member of the Hallsville United Methodist Church and later the Olivet Christian Church.
Mr. Curtis spent over 15 years as an auditor of student organizations at MU, all the while enjoying Mizzou sports.
Even when the teams were bad, he was an eternal optimist, holding his season tickets dear. Belzey said he'd always comment on the great recruits the Tigers had and how wonderful they'd be the next year.
On his 80th birthday, Mr. Curtis received a signed football from Larry Smith and a basketball from Norm Stewart.
Mr. Curtis was also a member of the University Golf League. "He loved his golf game," Belzey said. "He teed-off every Saturday at 6 a.m. from April to October. It was a given."
In 1996, Mr. Curtis and his wife moved to live with Belzey and her husband in Ohio. Belzey remembers a time shortly after her father moved in when the cable man was installing cable at their home.
"Dad was sitting in his Lazy Boy, and he asked the cable man, 'Is it true that there is a channel with sports on 24 hours a day?'" Belzey said. When the cable man confirmed that ESPN did exist, Mr. Curtis said, "Now I can die happy."
Services, conducted by the Rev. Amy Nyman, will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Cor Mariae Chapel in Rockford.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Curtis of Rockford, Ill.; one daughter, Patricia Belzey of Rockford, Ill.; a son, David Curtis of Warrensburg; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Four brothers died earlier.
Memorials may be sent to the M.D. Anderson Hospital, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030.

Elizabeth 'Betty' Louise Hansen
When Harry Hansen looks at the tall trees in his yard, he remembers his wife, Betty. She hand-picked each one.
"She created her own little park," Hansen said. Mrs. Hansen nurtured people even more than her flower and vegetable garden. She spent more than 20 years caring for alcoholics, drug addicts and the mentally ill as a nurse at the Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center.

The Hansens moved where his career as an entomologist took them. First they left California for the University of West Virginia, then on to the University of Rhode Island. They moved to Honduras, where they cared for their three daughters and spoke only enough Spanish to get by, Hansen chuckled.
"She was a wonderful mother," he said.
They continued on to Purdue University, then to the Lake of the Ozarks. The Hansens moved to Columbia in 1970 - their last home was Mrs. Hansen's favorite place to live.
In addition to caring for her family, patients and garden, Mrs. Hansen enjoyed researching financial investments to benefit her family.
