James D. Crockett
VIRGINIA BEACH - James D. “Jim” Crockett, 71, of the 1500 block of Woodbridge Place, passed away Sept. 6, 2007, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
A native of Quarrier, W.Va., he was the son of the late John and Ruby Crockett. He retired from the United States Navy after 23 years as a chief and worked with ERA Real Estate Professionals as an associate broker. He was an instructor for 20 years at Alpha College of Real Estate, AAA School of Real Estate and Millennium School of Real Estate.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kay; two daughters, Cathy “Cat” DeVito of Virginia Beach and Cristi Glenn and her husband Kevin of Richmond, Va.; a son, Greg Crockett and his wife Tammi of Suffolk; and six grandchildren, Nathanael DeVito, Salem Glenn, Moriah DeVito, Caleb DeVito, Christian Glenn and Cheyenne Crockett. He is also survived by a sister, Louise Crockett of Dawes, W.Va.; two brothers, Bob, Crockett of Colonial Heights, Va., and Rod Crockett of Dinwiddie, Va.; his business partner, Michael Jefferson; and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.

A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Wave Church on the corner of Great Neck Road and Old Donation Parkway, with Robert Cameron and Clayton Ritter officiating. The burial will follow in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Thomas J. Rawls Sr.
CHESAPEAKE - Thomas Jerry Rawls Sr., 73, of the 500 block of Beauregard Drive, went to be with the Lord Sept. 9, 2007, in Chesapeake. A native of Windsor, N.C., he was the son of the late Joe Jerry and Jenny Mobley Rawls and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a retired shop foreman with Atlantic Equipment Corporation. He loved the Lord, his family and his church and was an avid gardener.
Surviving are his loving wife, Rose Marie Rawls; two sons, Thomas J. Rawls Jr. and Larry W. Rawls; and two grandchildren, Kaylan Nicole Rawls and Kara Noelle Rawls, all of Chesapeake; four sisters, Marie Jones, Naomi Page and Marlene Smith, all of Chesapeake and Eva Festa of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Linwood M. Rawls and John B. Rawls, both of Chesapeake; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. David Libengood officiating. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at the residence at all other times. Bernice B. Johnson
NORFOLK - Bernice Elizabeth Brown Johnson, 70, of the 900 block of Albert Ave., passed away Sept. 7, 2007, peacefully surrounded by family at her home.
She was born Feb. 7, 1937, to the late Marie Nelson and Clinton A. Brown in Norfolk. She was a 1954 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She retired after more than 29 years of service from the Naval Supply Center as a transportation supervisor and was employed by Avis Rental Car as a billing clerk for 14 years. She was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church, Norfolk, where she served in several ministries. She was a former member of the International Toast Mistresses Association. She was predeceased by a son, Sherwood Johnson and a granddaughter, Kimberly Elizabeth Britton.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, JoAnne Johnson and Sharon Johnson-Clayton, both of Chesapeake, and Kimberly Johnson-Britton of Windsor; one son, Timothy Erskine Johnson of Norfolk; one sister, Evelyn Anderson of Chesapeake; one brother, Joseph C. Brown of New York City; two grandchildren, Eddie Johnson Clayton of Chesapeake and Sherwood Johnson Cross of Windsor; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at noon Thursday in Olive Grove Baptist Church, 1034 Albert Ave. Dr. Kim Brown Sr., pastor of Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church, Chesapeake, will officiate. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family and friends will assemble at 914 Albert Ave. 30 minutes prior to the service for the procession to the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby St. Chapel.

Stefan A.K. Holzeisen
SUFFOLK - Stefan Aurel Karol Holzeisen died at his home in Suffolk Sept. 7, 2007.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Barbara Jeanne Mijal Holzeisen; two daughters, Gabriella Lisa Holzeisen of Suffolk and Petty Officer 1st Class Stephanie Elizabeth Holzeisen-Mullen, U.S. Navy, son-in-law, Chief Petty Officer, Michael A. Mullen Jr., U.S. Navy; two precious granddaughters, Bergen Elizabeth and Delaney Patricia Mullen, all of Suffolk.
Stefan was born in Constanta, Romania, Aug. 8, 1941, to Karol and Eleana Holzeisen. After years of struggle, Stefan escaped communist Romania arriving in New York in 1970, finally realizing his dreams of freedom.
A mechanic by trade, Stefan was a man of many talents. He became an American citizen in 1980, living the American dream in California, Arizona, Missouri, Iowa and finally settling in Virginia in 2003 to be near his family. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, friends and to the country he loved so much.
A private graveside service will be held Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.

Peggy E. Davis
VIRGINIA BEACH - Peggy Eugenia Davis, 66, passed away peacefully Sept. 9, 2007, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Davis was born Aug. 8, 1941, to William and Ruth Dyer in Washington, D.C. She was a longtime member of Atlantic Shores Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for more than 15 years and was a frequent speaker at women’s ministry events. She was also an author and loved helping people anyway she could. Her family and friends will always remember her as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be deeply missed.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 47 years, Edward Davis; two sons, Mark Davis and wife Lisa of Crownsville, Md., and Greg Davis of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Leslie Hellstrom and husband Anders of Virginia Beach and Michelle Isaac and husband Chris of Chesapeake; two sisters, Anita Reno and husband Wayne and Deborah Forrester and husband Charles, all of Annapolis, Md.; nine grandchildren, Mark Jr., Kyle, Emma, Ashlee, Kaitlyn, Noah, Sydney, Olivia and Taylor; and one great-granddaughter, Jaslynn. She was preceded in death by both parents.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Atlantic Shores Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park.

CHESAPEAKE - John Anthony Bryzinski, 51, passed away in his residence. He was employed by Central Plumbing and Heating. Mr. Bryzinski was preceded in death by his father, Walter George Bryzinski. John will be missed by all who loved him.
He is survived by his mother, Jenny Myers; his children, Barton, Bridgett, John and Jillian; sisters, Rose Malone and husband Lee, Cindy Seavey and husband Jon, Mary Newman and husband David; his brother, Walter Bryzinski Jr.; stepsisters, Jane and Catherine; stepbrothers, Don and Adam; nieces and nephews, Brittany, Michelle, Jon, Ashley and Megan; and his grandson, Kye.

Raymond L. Early
CHESAPEAKE - Raymond Lee Early, 51, of the 1400 block of Jackson Ave., went to be with his Lord and Savior Sept. 10, 2007, in Chesapeake. A native of Norfolk, he was the son of Loyce Campen Early and the late Henry W. Early Sr. He was a self-employed tile setter and his family attends South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Rose Comstock Early; a son, Jason Lee Early; three sisters, Sandra Smith, Anita Turner and DeAnn Miller; two brothers, Roger Early and H.W. “Billy” Early Jr.; his mother-in-law, Lena Comstock; a brother-in-law, A. Wayne Comstock; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake with the Rev. Amos Eby officiating. James G. Norcom Jr.
CHESAPEAKE - James G. Norcom Jr., 85, of the 4000 block of Sun Valley Crescent died Sept. 7, 2007, in Bon Secours Maryview Nursing Care Center, Suffolk. Born in Portsmouth, he was the last surviving of four children born to Madeline and James G. Norcom Sr., and the grandson of Israel Charles (I.C.) Norcom. Mr. Norcom retired from the Portsmouth City public school system after 33 years as teacher. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church Portsmouth, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., The Eureka Inc. and The Olympian Sports Club. He was a graduate of Hampton (Institute) University and earned a master's degree from Virginia State University.
Survivors include his wife Eunice M. Norcom; son, James G. Norcom III (Marlene H.); two granddaughters, Chelsea and Sydney Norcom; in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. James Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, with the Rev. Dr. John Agbaje officiating. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at 1 p.m today, where the family will be at 7 p.m. for organizational services. The body will be taken to the church at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Craige Allen Phelps
CHESAPEAKE - Craige Allen Phelps, 47, of the 2000 block of Millville Road, passed away Sept. 10, 2007 in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.
Born in Norfolk, to the late Joseph Jr. and Rebecca Phelps, Craige was an entrepreneur and a SPC4 in the U.S. Army Reserves. He attended Calvary Temple Church.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Ann Phelps; former wife, Blanche Wise; a son, Mark A. Phelps; and a daughter, Kathleen R. Phelps, all of Chesapeake. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert A. Phelps and wife Hur Eun Hee of Olympia, Wash., and Joseph S. Phelps and wife Pamela of Chesapeake; and nieces and nephews, David Joe Phelps of Tempe, Ariz., Seth Mansfield, Randi Allison Phelps and Rebecca Stephanie Phelps, all of Chesapeake. He was predeceased by a nephew, Jesse Robert Phelps.

Mary A. Casey
NORFOLK - Mary Elizabeth Apalakis Casey, 64, of the 900 block of Armfield Circle, passed away Sept. 7, 2007, in DePaul Hospital.
A native of Winchester, Mass. she was the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth Apalakis. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Woburn, Mass.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Edwin Thomas Casey; a brother, Edward Peter Apalakis and wife Maria of Stoneham, Mass.; sisters-in law, Eileen Casey of New York City and Anita Houle of Florida and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral with the Very Rev. Seraphim Poulos, dean, officiating Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

NORFOLK - John Darden of the 1500 block of Birch St., died Sept. 9, 2007, in his residence. Born in Norfolk, he worked as a roofer.
Survivors include his daughter, Katrice Datham of Georgia; mother, Sadie Darden of Norfolk; three sisters, Sandra Wilson (Berdell), Reginia Brickhouse and Victoria Bagley (James), all of Norfolk; five brothers, Milford Case of Virginia Beach, Monroe Case (Barbara) of Norfolk, Reginald Case (Diana) of Oklahoma, Andre Darden of Norfolk and Marvin Darden of Norfolk; and two grandchildren.

Ruby M. Brown
PORTSMOUTH - Ruby Mae Damewood Brown, 93, formerly of New Castle, Va., went home to be with her Lord Sept. 10, 2007. She was a devoted Christian and a former member of Central Baptist Church of Portsmouth. Ruby was predeceased by her loving husband, Albert C. Brown and her son, Claude Whiting of Valdosta, Ga.
Those left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Latena Powell of Suffolk; two granddaughters; four grandsons; 10 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was loved by all who met her throughout her life.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Central Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Robertson. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennett's Creek Chapel, today from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Following the service, family and friends will meet at 2809 Heritage Drive in Suffolk.

Cindy A. Walker
SUFFOLK - Cindy Alice Walker, 48, of the 3600 block of Sherwood Road, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep Sept. 9, 2007. Cindy was the proud owner of Pine Grove Tree Service along with her husband Jimmy. She was predeceased by her stepfather, Joseph A. Walker Sr., and her stepsister, Mary Jo Langston.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Jimmy; her son, Joseph Stafford and wife Amanda; her grandchildren, Jada and Ciara; and stepson, Austin. In addition to her cherished mother, Eve Walker, she also leaves behind her brothers, Barry Garlick and wife Patty, Larry Garlick and wife Phyllis and Norman Garlick; her sisters, Jodi Bowman and husband Mike and Alexandra (Sandy) Butler and husband Don; stepbrothers, Cosmo Walker and wife Denise and J.A. Walker Jr., and wife Etna; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Cindy never knew a stranger.
Cindy was an active member of Pinecrest Baptist Church. She was a faithful Christian and has gone to be with God.
