PEKIN - Shirley R. McClelland, 67, of 1604 Matilda St. died at 11:09 a.m., Friday, October 5, 2001 at her home. She was formerly of Lemoore, California.
She was born September 17, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland to William T. and Mabel E. Howard Riley.
Surviving are her fiance, Jerald Redmon of Pekin; 1 son, John Hardester, Jr. of Dublin, California; 2 daughters, Cindy Parsons of Hanford, California and Theresa Soto of Lemoore; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; 2 sisters, Mabel Huffman of Sylvania, Ohio and Jane Bunting of Maryland; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by 1 brother.
Mrs. McClelland was employed by Transcon Freight Lines in Fresno, California for 30 years. Previously, she had worked for the Lemoore High School District office and also the YMCA in Hanford.
She was a member of the Lily of the Lake Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Lemoore and was a long-time supporter of the Visalia Rainbow Girls.
Cremation has been accorded. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, October 12, 2001 at the Prebyterian Church of Lemoore.

DALE V. NEWBERRY
(1922-2001)
MARQUETTE HEIGHTS - Dale Vernon Newberry, 79, of 710 LaSalle Boulevard, Marquette Heights, died at 8:32 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2001 at his residence.
Born September 5, 1922 in Farmer City to Jesse Cleveland and Inez Pearl VanNote Newberry, he married Mary Louise Kraft on October 3, 1942 in Palmyra, Missouri. She died November 23, 1999 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are two daughters, Joyce S. (James) Modglin of Mapleton and L. Kay LaScelle of Pekin; four grandchildren, Bill L. Gentil of Morton, Michelle D. (Jeff) Palazzo of East Peoria, Christopher D. (Lori) Keith of Kingston Mines, and Stefanie K. LaScelle of Peoria.
A World War II Army Airforce veteran, he attained the rank of Private First Class. He served from October 13, 1942 to January 21, 1946. He was a member of the Creve Coeur Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4835 where he was a past commander and the Farmer City American Legion.
Mr. Newberry worked as a plant manger at Agrico in North Pekin for 20 years. He later worked as a dispatcher for the Peoria & Pekin Union Railway Company in Creve Coeur for 9 - years.
He was a Saint Louis Cardinals fan.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2001 at Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin with military honors.
Arrangements are by the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur Chapel.

THEODORE R. HAYES
(1918-2001)
Marquette Heights - Theodore R. Hayes, 83, of Ionia, Iowa, formerly of Deer Creek and Marquette Heights, died Friday, September 21, 2001 at New Hampton Care Center in New Hampton, Iowa.
Born June 19, 1918 in Woodford County to George and Rachel Winstead Hayes, he married Thelma Dugan on November 4, 1972 in Peoria. She died December 18, 1994. He also was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are one sister, Dorothy Bennett of Pekin and many nieces and nephews.
He was a World War II Army veteran serving from July 28, 1942 to October 29, 1945.
He worked at Caterpillar, Inc as a welder for thirty years, retiring in 1974.
He was a member of the former Marquette Heights American Legion Post No. 1275, where he served as commander in 1966, 1969 and 1972.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2001 at Imhoff Cemetery near Congerville. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. Military rites will be accorded by Deer Creek American Legion Post No. 1276. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.
KEVIN L. BURGET
(1951-2001)
FOREST CITY - Kevin Lee Burget, 50, of 105 Main Street in Forest City, died at 3:28 a.m. Thursday, October 4, 2001 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.
Born February 12, 1951 in Springfield to Raymond L. and Mary Ann Tomlin Burget, he married Lisa Ann Watson on November 22, 1985 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother, Mary Ann Budke of Manito; four sons, Jarrod Burget, Terry Watson, Tim Miles and Justin Burget, all of Forest City; four sisters, Ruth (Mark) Cooper of Manito, Dana (Andy) Bush of Champaign, Stacey (Mike) Burks of Pekin and Gail (Randy) Watson of Topeka and one brother, Chris Budke of Jacksonville, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his father; one son, Landon Burget on August 8, 1994 in Raymond; one grandson, Wesley Landon Burget on September 10, 1999 in Peoria and one brother, Glen Burget.
He worked as a sales representative for Nostaw, Inc. in Forest City for the past three years.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2001 at Forest City Community Church in Forest City. The Rev. Thomas B. Guengerich will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight (Friday) at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Burial will be in Forest City Cemetery.

MARJORIE RUPP
(1919-2001)
PEKIN - Marjorie G. "Marge" Rupp, 81, of 76 North 20th Street in Pekin, died at 4:20 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at Pekin Hospital.
Born December 30, 1919 in Delavan to William and Emma Armstrong Blackburn, she married Orville Rupp on August 21, 1935 in Bloomington. He died July 16, 1976 in Pekin. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Sally J. Chaney on July 21, 1984 in Pekin; three grandsons; five brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are three daughters, Sharron A. Welch and Barbara J. (Jerry) Stark and Dianna L. Rupp, all of Pekin; one son, James W. (Edith) Rupp of Pekin; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren and one brother, Richard Blackburn of Clovis, New Mexico.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Delavan.
She worked as a waitress and cook at Pekin area restaurants including the Pekin Moose Lodge No. 916.
She was a member of the Women of the Moose No. 673 in Pekin since 1964, where she held all of the offices including college regent.
She enjoyed playing bingo.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. David Wetterlund will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with a Women of the Moose service at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
HOWARD F. ROHRS
(1914-2001)
PEKIN - Howard F. Rohrs, 87, of 1540 El Camino Drive, Apartment 322, died at 8:20 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2001 at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin.
Born August 27, 1914 in Pekin to George and Martha Maas Rohrs, he married Wanda Sue Weber on January 14, 1936 in Peoria. She died June 19, 1994 in Pekin. He also was preceded in death by one son in infancy, William Arthur Rohrs and one sister.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra J. (Eugene) Lutz and Linda Sue Cox; one son, Robert F. (Becki) Rohrs, all of Pekin; twelve grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two brothers, Vern Rohrs of San Diego, California and Marvin (Betty) Rohrs of Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania; and one sister, Dorothy Schmidt of San Diego, California.
Howard was a licensed insurance broker associated with Rohrs Insurance in Pekin from 1933 until 1970 first as a partner with his father then as owner. He then went to work for Caterpillar, Inc. at their Mapleton foundry. He was serving as Plant Burden Analyst when he retired in February of 1981.
Howard was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin and was secretary for their initial church board. He served in many capacities over the ensuing years: teacher of Adult Bible Class, Chairman of the Building Finance Committee, and Chairman of the Board of Elders.
Howard was active in many civic organizations. He was a charter member of the Pekin Lions Club, served that organization in various offices, and was proud that he had a perfect attendance record for 27 years. He was active in Pekin Players theatre group and was their stage electrician for fifteen years as well as treasurer for seven years. He was a charter member of the Pekin Archery Club, an active member of the Celestial City Campers and an active member of the Chamber of Commerce during his years of business with Rohrs Insurance.
He was active in boy scouting (an Eagle Scout) and in 1949 helped to organize a Scout Explorer Post, which attained a membership of thirty-seven boys. He served as Post Advisor for 12 years. He was recognized in 1968 for his accomplishments in scouting and was presented with the Silver Beaver Award.
Howard was a mover and a shaker, and even after he retired and moved with his wife Wanda to Tennessee, he helped to organize a men's club at their local church and served as its first secretary/treasurer. He also joined the Kiwanis Club in Paris Landing, Tennessee and became secretary/treasurer and served in that capacity for eight years. They moved back to Pekin in 1992.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2001 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin. The Rev. Rodger P. Abatie will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, and also one hour before services Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

JAMES L. CHAMBERS
(1935-2001)
PEKIN - James Lee Chambers, 65, of 1922 Highwood Ave. died at 3:30 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2001 at his home.
He was born December 23, 1935 in Pekin, a son of Lester A. and Olga Mayeur Chambers. He married Joanne E. "Jody" Gish Green on October 10, 1992 in Pekin.
Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, J. Mark (Eileen) Chambers of Rockford, IL and Rev. Christopher L. (Pamela) Chambers of Champaign, IL; 2 step-sons, Brian (Joyce) Green of Heyworth, IL and David (Ania) Green of Miami, FL; 1 step-daughter, Karen (William) Peterson of East Peoria; 8 grandchildren; and 5 step-grandchiildren.
He was preceded in death by 1 son, Lester "Les" Chambers in October of 1995 in Morton.
Mr. Chambers was employed by Sears for 35 years retiring from the accounting department as a midwest regional auditor in 1991. He then was employed as a realtor by Allen and Associates in Pekin, last working in January 2001.
A 1953 graduate of Pekin Community High School, he attended Western Illinois University, where was a member of the basketball team. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Bradley University in 1957.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin where he was deacon of the missionaries. He was a member of Pekin Moose Lodge #916. An avid Bradley basketball fan, he also enjoyed fishing in Canada. He was actively involved with the St. Jude Midwest Affiliate in Peoria where he founded the St. Jude's Singles Dance fund raiser.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 4, 2001 at Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin. Rev. Michael McLeod will officiate. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel.

PEKIN - Dezolina Vittoria Massaglia, 92, 2501 Allentown Rd., died at 11:21 p.m., Sunday at Hallmark House Nursing Center.
She was born April 5, 1909 in Athens, Greece to Adam and Catherine Mecca Pari. She married Frederic John Massaglia on March 15, 1926 in W. Frankfort, IL.
She was preceded in death by her husband on May 10, 1977 in W. Frankfort; 1 brother, Anthony Pari; and 1 sister, Angelina Ricci.
Surviving are 1 son, Fred Massaglia of Pekin; 2 daughters, Catherine (Ralph) Naven of Pekin and Judith (Jeff) Ribak of East Peoria; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Massaglia had worked as a cook for the Moose Lodge and the and the Franklin County Country Club, both in W. Frankfort. She loved to garden and raise flowers. She was of the Catholic faith.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, October 5, 2001 at the Union Funeral Home in W. Frankfort. Rev. Brian Barker will officiate. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. and from 1 to 2 p.m., Friday at Union Funeral Home.

MANITO - Andrew Morton Carter, 80, of 13539 North Manito Road, Manito, died at 9 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2001 at Pekin Hospital.
Born April 18, 1921 in Norris to James Thomas and Addie Mae Engle Carter, he married Helen Marie Brown on October 13, 1940 in Davenport, Iowa. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Thomas C. (Judi) Carter of Humble, Texas; two daughters, Connie M. (Clifford) Eldert and Nonie J. (Douglas) Sindle, both of Manito; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one niece; and four nephews.
His parents, one brother, and two sisters preceded him in death.
A member of Teamsters' and Chauffeurs' Union Local 627 in Peoria, he retired in 1981.
He enjoyed fishing and camping.

PEKIN - Penny Sue Isbell, 45, of 1121 South Capitol Street, Pekin, died at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, September 30, 2001 at her residence.
Born July 23, 1956 in Peoria to Harry Lee and Charlene Walker Dixon, she married Carl Eugene Isbell on September 17, 1974 in Pekin. He survives.
Also surviving are her parents of Pekin; four sons, Israel C. Isbell, Jonathon L. Isbell, Joseph W. Isbell, and Samuel P. Isbell, all of Pekin; three sisters, Terry (Dr. Larry) Dowden of El Paso, Patti L. Dixon of Clinton, and Susan K. (Steve) Rakestraw of Pekin; four nephews; and one niece.
Her grandparents preceded her in death.
A 1974 graduate of Pekin Community High School, she was a homemaker and home schooled her children.
Mrs. Isbell was a member of the Pekin Bible Church, where she was the Director of Children's Ministries for the past 12 years, which included the overseeing of Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, Children's Camp Ministry, Children's Church, and the Pioneer Club Ministry. She also was a member of the Home Builder's Sunday school class and was custodian for the past year of the church. She was a volunteer for Camp Good News in rural Washington for the past 3 years and was a Teen Team co-leader for home schoolers in McLean County for the past 7 years.
She enjoyed making crafts, reading, and bible studies.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 4, 2001 at the Pekin Bible Church. The Rev. Richard W. Jones will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Smithville Cemetery in Smithville.

BETTY J. O'CONNELL

PEKIN - Betty Jane O'Connell, 78, of 1012 South 6th Street, Pekin, died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, September 30, 2001 at her residence.
Born November 19, 1922 in Pekin to Clyde and Marian U. Ozella Bennett, she married John Daniel "Jack" O'Connell on August 26, 1961 in Pekin. He survives.
Also surviving are two brothers, Raymond C. (Betty) Bennett and Walter S. (Wanda) Bennett, both of Pekin; four nephews; three nieces; and twelve grandnieces and grandnephews.
Her parents preceded her in death.
She was a 1940 graduate of Pekin Community High School.
Mrs. O'Connell worked as a bookkeeper at the Peoria Stockyards and at Soldwedel's Dairy in Pekin for many years. She later worked as a clerk in the Tazewell County Treasurer's Office for several years.
She was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin, the Council of Catholic Women, and the Saint Joseph Mission Society.
She enjoyed dancing and cooking.
A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. The Rev. Timothy Nolan will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Saint Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in Pekin.

PEKIN - Robert Walter Hartnett, 79, of 615 West Shore Drive, Pekin, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 29, 2001 at Pekin Manor.
Born December 8, 1921 in Pekin to George Walter and Anna Johanna Mogga Hartnett, he married Shirley Ann Kessler on December 26, 1954 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Gordon R. (Glennice) Hartnett of Dallas, Texas and Mark A. Hartnett of Pekin; one daughter, Polly J. Austin of Supply, North Carolina; one granddaughter, Cassandra A. Austin of Supply, North Carolina; one sister, Kathryn Cottingham of Pekin; two nephews; and two nieces.
His parents and one infant brother (James M. Hartnett) preceded him in death.
A World War II United States Army veteran, he attained the rank of Corporal. He served from September 7, 1942 to January 13, 1946.
Mr. Hartnett worked at Keystone Steel and Wire Company in Bartonville for 35 years, retiring in 1982 as a fence machine operator.
He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Pekin and the Schooner's Group of the church. He also was a member of the Keystone Retirees Club. He was a former Sunday school teacher, usher, church school secretary, and dart ball team member of his church.
He was an avid Chicago Cub's fan.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Pekin. The Rev. Robert A. Scott will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

PEKIN - Donald Eugene Lynch, 79, of 1201 South 10th Street, Pekin, died at 5:59 p.m. Friday, September 28, 2001 at Morton Terrace, Ltd. in Morton.
Born July 1, 1922 in Decatur to Edward and Hazel M. Jones Lynch, he married Phyllis Ruth Mayhall on June 10, 1941 in New Albany, Indiana. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Janey R. Joos of Boston, Massachusetts; one son-in-law, Kenneth E. Vogel of Pekin; and four grandchildren, Darci A. (Steve) Burns and Paige D. Vogel, both of Boston, Massachusetts, Darin K. (Stephanie) Joos of Champaign, and Cara J. Joos of Seattle, Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter (Rebecca Jo Vogel on September 15, 2000 in Pekin), and one grandson (Dirk E. Vogel).
A World War II United States Navy veteran, he served from December 17, 1943 to January 21, 1946. He served on the USS San Juan in the Pacific Theatre.
Mr. Lynch was a 60 year member of Steamfitters Local 353 in Peoria, where he worked 28 years for Johnson Service in Peoria.
He enjoyed fishing.
Private graveside services will be Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

CREVE COEUR - Florence Estella Wyatt Draher, 93, of 500 Centennial Drive, East Peoria, died at 4:45 a.m. Friday, September 28, 2001 at ManorCare at Riverview in East Peoria. She was formerly of Creve Coeur and Peoria.
Born July 2, 1908 in Lewistown to John Trafton and Atha Luella Berry Blackaby, she married Thomas Wyatt (Divorced). She later married Rudolph E. Draher. He preceded her in death along with one grandson, one granddaughter, and two brothers.
Surviving are one daughter, Ruth V. (Jim) Lierle of Creve Coeur; two sons, Thomas L. (Evelyn) Wyatt of Pekin and James R. (Patsy) Wyatt of Creve Coeur; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She worked as a bookkeeper at Peoria Apron and Towel, next at Toastmaster Bakery in Peoria for 20 years and last at Bower Buick in Peoria for 10 years, retiring in 1972.
She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary in Peoria. She was a former member of the Creve Coeur Christian Church and the YOPS Club at Arcadia Presbyterian Church in Peoria.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2001 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur Chapel. The Rev. Judy Doyle will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.

PEKIN - John Carl Andrews, 84, of 418 Fairlane died at 4:18 a.m., Thursday, September 27, 2001 at his home.
He was born March 8, 1917 in Peoria to Michael and Duna Andrews. He married Millie M. Bennett on January 13, 1939 in Palmyra, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by one great-grandson and one brother.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Harvey Paul Andrews of Pekin, Michael Lee (Denise) Andrews of Morton, and John C. Andrews, Jr. of Bartonville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ann Harms of Trivoli.
Mr. Andrews was employed by Caterpillar, Inc. in East Peoria for 33 years, retiring in 1974 as a gauge maker. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a former member of UAW Local #974.

PEKIN - Maeleen Marie Richardson, 48, of 2108 Valentine Ave., died at 10 p.m., Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
She was born September 4, 1953 in Pekin to Leland and Mae Schryver Kiser. She married Jerry Richardson on March 9, 1979 in Pekin.
Surviving are her husband; her mother, Mae Ivey of Pekin; her father and step-mother, Leland (Eleanor) Kiser of Bradenton, Florida; one son, Scott (Kari) Richardson of Pekin; one daughter, Susan Richardson of Pekin; one step-daughter, Sara Richardson of Lafayette, Louisiana; one grandson, Caleb Michael Richardson; and two brothers, Ron (Clara) Kiser of Murphysboro, Illinois and Gary Kiser of Pekin.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Sheryl Dixon.
Mrs. Richardson received her associate degree in nursing from Illinois Central College in 1978. She worked for OSF Home Care as a private duty licensed practical nurse from 1993 until January of this year.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 29, 2001 at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel.

ROBERT SLOTER
(1928-2001)
PEKIN - Robert Adam Sloter, 73, of 2224 Crestview Dr. died at 10:10 a.m., Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at his home.
He was born June 5, 1928 in Green Valley to Ben and Alvia Hoerr Sloter. He married Darlene Ann Meisinger on May 23, 1954 in Green Valley. He later married Terry Deona Robinson Wright on June 2, 1973 in Pekin.
He was preceded in death by his first wife on November 21, 1971 in Pekin and 1 brother.
Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Jeff (Molly) Sloter of Peoria and Mike (Kristi) Sloter of Manito; and 4 grandchildren.
Mr. Sloter was employed by Caterpillar, Inc. in East Peoria for 41 years, retiring from the utilities department on December 31, 1988. He later worked as a driver for D&W Distributing Company in Peoria and Velde Ford in Pekin.
He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #1271, Moose Lodge #916, and William Schaefer American Legion Post #44, all in Pekin. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Pekin, where he had been an usher and served on the stewardship committee. He had been a grade school, junior high, and high school basketball referee from 1951-76. He was an avid bowler and fisherman. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, September 28, 2001 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pekin. Rev. Mark A. Miller and Rev. Glenn R.A. Niemann will officiate. Burial will be in Green Valley Cemetery in Green Valley. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., tonight (Thursday) at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel.
