PEKIN - Henrietta Freida Buchanan, 85, of 1222 Howard Court died at 5:45 a.m., Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at her home.
Born June 27, 1916 in Peoria to Otto and Rickie Herring Krause, she married Howard E. Buchanan on August 2, 1941 in Palmyra, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her husband on October 20, 1975 in Pekin; 1 brother; and 4 sisters.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Marianne (Martin) Wagner of Peoria and Betty L. (Marty) Ingrassia of Pekin; 2 sons, Larry E. (Sandy) Buchanan of Knoxville, Tennessee and Thomas L. (Rose) Buchanan of Pekin; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Sophie White and Bertha Fauser, both of Peoria.
A homemaker, Mrs. Buchanan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 5, 2002 at her church. Rev. Rodger P. Abatie will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel.

DOROTHY M. STRUBHAR
(1910-2002)
PEKIN - Dorothy Matilda Strubhar, 92, of 444 South Parkway Drive, Apt. 1006, Pekin, died at 2:17 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2002 in the emergency room of Pekin Hospital. She was formerly of 1013 South 13th Street in Pekin.
Born January 18, 1910 in Browning to Walter and Lily May Crafton Phillips, she married Clarence "Jerry" Strubhar on October 10, 1926 in Pekin.
Surviving are one son, Roland K. "Rollie Keith" Strubhar of Pekin; one daughter, Lucille R. Benson of Peoria; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Two brothers (George Phillips and Clarence "Smokey" Crafton) preceded her in death.
She worked for the American Distilling Company in Pekin for 40 years on the bottling line, retiring February 28, 1974.
She was a 60-year member of the Pekin Bible Church, where she was past president and secretary of the women's ministries. She also was a member of the Distillery, Wine, and Allied Workers' International Union, Local #4.
She enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting, reading, and doing crafts.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, where visitation will be one hour before services. The Rev. Richard W. Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

(1908-2002)
CREVE COEUR - Virginia Ella Munday Rader, 94, of 572 Dempsey Street, Creve Coeur, died at 11 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria.
Born March 5, 1908 in DeCova, Kentucky to Frank and Myrtle Artman Wilhelm, she married Everett Camden in January of 1923 in Johnson City. He died in 1927 in Johnson City. She later married Gilbert Munday on March 16, 1929 in Wayne City. He died May 22, 1970 in Peoria. She then married Henry Rader on December 6, 1975 in East Peoria. He died July 24, 1977 in Creve Coeur. One son (Mike Munday on November 24, 2000 in Peoria), one great-great-granddaughter, one brother, and two sisters also preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Frances Munday of Creve Coeur; two sons, Everett (Virginia) Camden of Morton and Jack (Phyllis) Munday of Creve Coeur; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Kenneth Frank Wilhelm of Creve Coeur.
She worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 28 years at the Morton Parts Facility, retiring in 1970 as a shipping clerk.
She was a former member of the Caterpillar Retirees Club and the Creve Coeur Women's Club.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. The Rev. Donald G. Zumwalt will officiate. There will be no visitation.

(1916-2002)
PEKIN - Charles R. White, 86, formerly of Rosenberg Acres, Pekin, died at 6:25 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2002 at Pekin Manor.
Born February 7, 1916 in Switzerland County, Indiana to Frank and Florrie Cochran White, he married Blanche Krutz on August 27, 1949 in Peoria. She died February 10, 1989 in Pekin. Two step-daughters, one brother, and two sisters also preceded him in death.
Surviving are four sons, Charles (Susan) White of Indianapolis, Indiana, Frank (Pat) White of Morgan Hill, California, John (Pam) White of Pittsboro, Indiana, and William (Naomi) Butler of Georgia; two daughters, Betty (Paul) Byram of Pittsboro, Indiana and Loretta Chasteen of Speedway, Indiana; two step-daughters, Louise Roos of Lincoln and Carol Smith of Texas; fifteen grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bobby White of Cynthiana, Kentucky and John Henry White of Aurora, Indiana; and one sister, Frieda Woodruff of Washington.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Mr. White worked as a machine operator for the Broderick and Bascom Wire Rope Company in Bartonville for 31 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, where he was past president and treasurer of the local chapter.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2002 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, where visitation will be one hour before services. The Rev. Krista L. Brockman will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.

Marquette Heights - Lois Margaret Mathis, 72, of 409 Joliet Road, Marquette Heights, died at 2:00 a.m., Friday, March 29, 2002 at her residence.
Born September 30, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Clinton and Easter Tanner Sisk, she married Charles Russell Mathis on July 22, 1947 in Paducah, Kentucky. He died October 31, 1990 in East Peoria. Also preceding her in death was one brother and one sister.
Surviving are three sons, David Russell (Penny) Mathis of North Pekin, Albert Scott Mathis of Marquette Heights and Kim Evan (Rebecca) Mathis of North Liberty, Iowa; two daughters, Jan Ellen (Charles) Randleman and Amy Sue Mathis, both of Pekin; sixteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and one brother, Thomas (Shirley) Sisk of Rogers, Arkansas.
Mrs. Mathis was a homemaker and she formerly attended St. John's Lutheran Church in Pekin.
She was a former Girl Scout leader in Marquette Heights. She loved bowling and gardening and she was an avid Cubs fan.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Sean Randleman will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

PEKIN - Doris M. Taylor, 72, of 615 Country Club Lane, died at 1:15 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2002 at her residence.
Born October 27, 1929 in Pekin to Cecil W. and Ora Holland Wilcox, she married Eugene W. Taylor on June 26, 1949 in Pekin. He survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Pamela A. Taylor of Pekin, Barbara J. (Terry) Johnston of Charlotte, North Carolina and Marcia J. (Mark) Zelnio of Bloomington, Illinois; four grandchildren, Bryan R. Crum and Megan T. Crum of Charlotte and Kristin N. Zelnio and Bradley J. Zelnio, both of Bloomington and one brother, Dr. Donald (Mary Alice) Wilcox of Phoenix, Arizona.
Her parents and one sister preceded her in death.
Mrs. Taylor was a member Chapter GW of the PEO Sisterhood. She also was a member of the Pekin Hospital League. A member of the Pekin Country Club, she was a longtime member of the Ladies Golf League.
She was a former member of the board of directors of the Pekin YWCA and of the United Fund. She also was a former Girl Scout leader and had been active in school organizations.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, where the family will receive friends for one hour before the service. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. Cremation will be accorded.

PEKIN - Donald H. "Red" Bearden, 82, of 1123 Henrietta Street, Pekin, died at 7:18 a.m., Monday, March 25, 2002 at Pekin Hospital.
Born October 22, 1919 in Pekin to Robert Lee and Josephine Woost Bearden, he married Virginia Margaret Gumbel on June 8, 1946 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Donald Lee (Melody) Bearden of Atlanta, Georgia and A. Michael Bearden of Pekin; two grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; one sister, Mildred Vaupel of Calhan, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents, three brothers, and two sisters preceded him in death.
A 1937 graduate of Pekin Community High School, he was a United States Navy World War II veteran.
Mr. Bearden was a letter carrier for the United Sates Postal Service in Pekin for 32 years, retiring in 1977.
He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 209 in Pekin.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. There will be no visitation.

PEKIN - Marion Lee Hopkins, 63, of 1312 Somerset Street in Pekin, died at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2002 at the Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria.
Born February 21, 1939 in Pekin to Charles Henry and Edna May Church Hopkins, he married Patsy Lou Bell on June 30, 1958 in Creve Coeur. She survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Warren G. King of East Peoria, Ricky Lee Hopkins of Pekin, Heath A. Hopkins of Hiawatha, Kansas and Curtis D. Hopkins at home; four daughters, Debbie L. (Michael) Simpkins of Pekin, Christine L. Andersen of Olsburg, Kansas, Vickie S. (Andy) Davis and Dianna L. (James) Strube, both of Pekin; seventeen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, John F. Hopkins and George (Barbara) Hopkins, both of Pekin and Richard D. Hopkins of Marquette Heights; three sisters, including his twin, Mary I. Clark of Peoria, Ruth Topper and Annabelle (Edward) Flier, both of Pekin and one half-brother, Art Church of Manito.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters and four brothers.
A 30-year member of Teamsters and Chauffeurs Union Local No. 627 in Peoria, he was a truck driver for Seneca Petroleum Company, retiring in 1996.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Don E. Smith will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Lake Cemetery in rural Manito.
ALICE L. MOSS
(1914-2002)
PEKIN - Alice L. Moss, 87, of 1520 El Camino Drive, a Pekin resident since 1943, died at 10:15 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2002 at Pekin Manor. She was formerly of 812 Charles Street in Pekin.
Born March 23, 1914 in Hamilton County, Illinois to Lawrence and Minnie Van Cleave Lambert, she married John D. Moss on June 28, 1936 in McLeansboro, Illinois. He died August 24, 2000 in Pekin. She also was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.
Surviving are one daughter, Amy R. Hoch of Marengo; one son, Larry D. (Mary Ann) Moss of Kerrville, Texas; four grandchildren, Jodi A. (Michael) Willmore of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jan A. (Robert) Roach of Aurora, Colorado, Michael D. (Lori) Moss of Chicago and David K. (Liz) Moss of Putnam Valley, New York and six great-grandchildren.
She received her teaching certificate in 1934 from Southern Illinois University. She later earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Illinois State University in 1955.
She taught in rural Hamilton County, Illinois from 1935 to 36. She later was a teacher for several years with the kindergarten program sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance in Pekin. She then taught school in Tremont in 1948.
She was a fourth grade teacher for Pekin Public Schools District 108 for 25 years at Wilson School, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of the Tazewell County Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association and the Illinois Education Association.
She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Pekin, where she taught the Women's Bible Class on Sunday mornings for more than 50 years. She formerly served the church as deaconess and as the longtime chairperson of the Women's Missionary Society.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at First Baptist Church in Pekin. The Rev. Dr. Robert E. MacKay will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

PEKIN -James Dean Morris, 67, of 501 Willow St., died at 5:21 a.m., Friday, March 22, 2002 at Herman Memorial Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
Born October 25, 1934 in Pekin to Roy Everett and Lucille Marie Thurman Morris, he married Janice Faye Claton on June 9, 1956 in Pekin.
Surviving are his wife; his mother, Lucille M. Morris of Pekin; 1 son, Gregory D. (Rhonda) Morris of Henderson, Kentucky; 1 daughter, Denise D. (Eric) Divjak of Katy, Texas; 5 grandchildren; 1 sister, Donna L. (Raymond) Autrey of Pekin; and 2 brothers, Richard E. (Gladys) Morris and Gordon L. (Betty) Morris, both of Pekin.
He was preceded in death by his father in February 1972.
Mr. Morris last worked in the maintenance department for Pekin Public School District #108 for 10 years. Previously, he had worked at Corn Products Corporation in Pekin for 28 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-59. He was a member of Pekin Bible Church where he belonged to the Truth Seekers Bible class and currently served on the Missions board. He was a talented artist and enjoyed many artistic endeavors.

PEKIN -Anson Eugene Spencer, Jr., 67, of 605' S. 2nd St. died at 9:33 p.m., Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at his home.
Born October 4, 1934 in Middletown, Connecticut to Anson Eugene and Helen M. Hills Spencer, Sr., he married Patricia Hershey on April 6, 1972 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Joyce Merritt of Pekin and Shawna (Brad) Stone of Mackinaw, Illinois; 4 grandchildren; and 1 sister.
An electrician, Mr. Spencer last worked for Borden's Dairy in Phoenix, Arizona. Previously, he had worked for Waste Management of Peoria. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 25, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Charles L. Williams will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. PEKIN - Barbara Ellen Fahnders, 71, of 1921 Highwood Avenue, died at 4:05 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at the Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria.
Born December 13, 1930 in Decatur to John E. and Mary A. B. Shamhart Little, she married Leslie J. "Shorty" Fahnders on March 26, 1949 in Pekin. He died April 26, 1997 in Pekin. She also was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Franklin Little.
Surviving are one daughter, Leslie Jo Fahnders of Pekin; one sister, Doris E. (Richard) Cantrell of Manito and many nieces and nephews.
She was the bookkeeper for Cincinnati Township in Tazewell County for 35 years, retiring in 1997.
She was a lifetime member of the Roy L. King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1232 Ladies Auxiliary in Pekin.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin, where she was a former Eucharistic minister and a member of the Council of Catholic Women.
She enjoyed cooking.
Her funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. The Rev. James E. Kruse will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, where the recitation of the rosary will be held at 4:30 p.m. and a VFW Ladies Auxiliary memorial service at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before services Saturday at the church. MARQUETTE HEIGHTS - Gary Wayne Brawner, 51, of 107 Kickapoo Court, Marquette Heights, died at 1:28 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at his residence.
He was born June 29, 1950 in Union City, Tennessee to John Baxter, Sr. and Glenda Marie Wyman Brawner.
Surviving are his mother and step-father, Glenda and Melvin Reed of Marquette Heights; step-mother, Marie Brawner of Manito; one daughter, Christy (Brian) Brandau of Pekin; one granddaughter; one sister, Judy C. (Gene) Phillips of Spring City, Tennessee; three brothers, James R. "Rich" Brawner of Marquette Heights, John B. (Cheryl) Brawner, Jr. of Eureka, and Terryl L. (Kathy) Brawner of Pekin; one half-sister, Susan (Shad) Messman of Manito; five nephews; and seven nieces.
His father and grandparents preceded him in death.
He was a Vietnam Army veteran.
A construction worker for many years, he last worked for L.W. Thomas Roofing, Inc. in Mossville for 12 years, last working in 1992.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marquette Heights, Roofers & Water Proofers Workers Local #69 of Peoria, Peoria-Tazewell A.B.A.T.E., and the Central Illinois Chapter of POW/MIA.
He enjoyed his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and collecting eagle statues.
He was a heart transplant recipient in 1997.

PEKIN - Carl Robert "Bobby" Layne, 78, of 1511 Chestnut Street in Pekin, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at Pekin Hospital.
Born June 13, 1923 in Havana to Ater T. and Minnie Winchester Layne, he married Velma Jean Vaughn on November 21, 1945 in Pekin. She died December 26, 1980 in Peoria. He also was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are one son, Michael R. (Sheri) Layne of Pekin; one daughter, Rebecca L. "Becky" Layne of Pekin; two grandchildren, Michael S. Layne of Pekin and Kimberly J. (Dennis) Brown of Birmingham, Alabama; two great-grandsons and one sister, Anna Mae Bushie of Stambaugh, Michigan.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater with the Army and later with the Army Air Forces. He attained the rank of Sergeant.
He was employed as a custodian with Pekin Community High School for 16 years, retiring in 1988. He previously worked for more than 20 years at Standard Brands in the yeast house until its closing.
He was a member of Pekin Moose Lodge No. 916.
He enjoyed walking around the lagoon at Mineral Springs Park in Pekin. He was a Chicago Cubs Baseball fan. He also was a San Francisco Giants Baseball fan.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.

TOPEKA - John Henry Rogge, 77, of 22352 Kohl Street, Topeka, died at 3:13 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at his residence.
Born July 8, 1924 in Linn Township, Woodford County to John Peters and Geskea Alida Tjaden Rogge, he married Betty Elaine Hartman Stewart on October 16, 1976 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Joe Russell (Judy) Rogge of Roanoke, one daughter, Sherrie (Robert) Genetti of Eagle, Nebraska; one step-son, James A. (Brenda) Stewart of Durrand, Michigan; two step-daughters, Sharon R. (Rocky) Duffin of Pekin and Valerie L. (Tony) Nowosielski of Brownsburg, Indiana; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Clyde Rogge of Roanoke.
His parents and one daughter (Jean Rogge) preceded him in death.
Mr. Rogge had farmed in the Roanoke area for many years. He then worked as a groundskeeper at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria for 9 years, at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin for 5 years, and last at the Pekin Mall for 9 ' years. He retired in 1987.
He was a member of Sand Ridge Community Church in Topeka.
He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and gardening.

PEORIA - Jerry David Foust, 60, of 708 North Maxwell Road, Peoria, died at 11:00 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2002 at his residence.
Born July 22, 1941 in Canton, Missouri to James Edward and Marguerite Morriss Foust, he married Eunice Marie Allen on November 14, 1959 in Canton, Missouri.
Surviving are one son, David R. (Cindy) Foust of East Peoria; three daughters, Robyn Renae Darden and Rhonda Lenae Foust, both of East Peoria and Marcia L. (Joe) McNear of Peoria; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Foust and James (Bonnie) Foust, both of Canton, Missouri and three sisters, Nancy (Rodger) Cottrell of LaGrange, Missouri, Grace (John) Peterson of East Moline and Patty Herrin of Canton, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by one son, Rocky Neil Foust in 1979; one great-grandson; three brothers and one sister.
He worked at Caterpillar, Inc. in East Peoria from 1964 to 1981. He last worked as a lead person in the packaging department for Coil in Missouri, retiring in 2001.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur Chapel. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fon du Lac Cemetery in East Peoria.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Methodist Medical Center Hospice Services.
WILLIAM J. HILD
(1945-2002)
PEKIN - William Jay Hild, 56, of 4730 Michigan Avenue, Stevensville, Michigan, died at 4:17 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2002 in the emergency room of Pekin Hospital. He was formerly of Pekin.
Born December 14, 1945 in Pekin to Edgar Allen and Nelta Sophie Veerman Hild, he married Donna Jane "Janie" Coe on October 23, 1965 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She survives.
Surviving are one son, Edgar A. (Kim) Hild of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; one daughter, Heidi J. (Rob) Winkelmann of Stevensville, Michigan; three grandchildren, Melissa D. Hild, Brittany A. Hild, and W. Austin Hild, all of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; two sisters, Glenda L. (Lester) Schrieber of Pekin and Ruth L. Hild of Kansas City, Missouri; two nieces; and one nephew.
His parents and one nephew preceded him in death.
A 1963 graduate of Pekin Community High School, he received a bachelor's degree in Business Education from Illinois State University in Normal, and his master's degree in Business Education from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Mr. Hild was employed by the Lakeshore Public Schools in Stevensville, Michigan, where he taught Business Law and Accounting at Lakeshore High School for 20 years, was the Assistant Principal at the Lakeshore Middle School for 8 years, and last was the Project Facilitator for 4 years. He retired June of 1999.
He was a member of the National Education Association, Michigan Education Association, Lakeshore Education Association, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. He currently was serving as the Vice President of the Michigan Construction User's Council. He was a former scout leader for Stevensville's Troop #603 of Boy Scouts of America. He was an Eagle Scout and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.
He also was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin and attended Stevensville United Methodist Church in Stevensville, Michigan.
He enjoyed golfing, boating, and traveling.
Local services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin. The Rev. Michael McLeod will officiate.
Further services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Stevensville United Methodist Church in Stevensville, Michigan. The Rev. Gene Lewis will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Starks and Menchinger Family Funeral Home in St. Joseph, Michigan. Burial will be in Hickory Bluff Cemetery in Stevensville, Michigan.
Local arrangements are by the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

ORVILLE M. SOMMER
(1913-2002)
PEKIN - Orville M. Sommer, 88, of 2001 Independence Drive in Pekin, died at 9:20 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2002 at Pekin Hospital.
Born April 9, 1913 in Pekin to Wilbert C. and Edna Miller Sommer, he married Tillie Gittinger on April 25, 1935 in Meadows. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Gale (Earl) Seamands of Mahomet; two sons, Doug (Jo) Sommer of Pekin and Terry (Marcy) Sommer of Sarasota, Florida; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one brother, Clarence (Anna) Sommer of Hopedale.
His parents, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
He was a 1931 graduate of Pekin Community High School.
Mr. Sommer farmed in the Gibson City area from 1938 to 1966 where he was a director on the Ford County Farm Bureau board from 1950 to 1959 and president from 1959 to 1965. He was a director of Agricultural Business Service Company in 1965 and received the Ford County Progressive Farmer Award. He was a member of the Illinois Farm Bureau since 1940.
He became a licensed pilot in 1945 and was a member of the Gibson City Flying Club.
He helped organize the first unit school district in Ford County (Gibson City Unit School District) and served on the school board from 1948 to 1956. While in the Gibson City area, he held numerous civic and agricultural positions and was a deacon and elder at the Gibson City First Christian Church.
He was employed by the Illinois Agriculture Association as manager of the DeWitt County Farm Bureau from 1966 to 1969. He later moved to Pekin where he became the manager of the Tazewell County Farm Bureau from 1969 until his retirement in 1982.
After his retirement, he owned and operated Sommer Tours, a tour company that traveled the United States, including Hawaii and also Canada.
He was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club of Pekin and formerly served as its newsletter editor. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member and past president of the Pekin Men's Senior Golf League. He was an avid painter and was a member of the Illinois Art League.
He was an active member of First Christian Church in Pekin, where he had served the church as board chairman, elder and deacon. He also had played on the church's dart ball team, participated in the men's fellowship and was an active choir member.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2002 at First Christian Church. The Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
