Catherine A. Cary
Catherine Adele Cary, 70, of Unionville, died Friday, October 4, 2002, at her residence. Born February 12, 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was daughter of the late Mamie Shirley. She was a retired nurse.
Survivors include a number of cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 9, at Orange Grove Baptist Church with interment in the Shirley Family Cemetery at Unionville. Pastor Perry Moore officiated.

Virginia N. Colvin
Virginia Nelson (Jenny) Colvin, 85, of Aroda, who lived with her sister-in-law, Lillie Colvin, died Thursday, September 26, 2002 in Madison. She was born November 30, 1916 in Madison County, daughter of the late Lester O. Colvin and Sallie Carpenter Colvin. She was a member of Walker's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Odie Jenkins of Alexandria; a brother, Arthur E. Colvin of Rockville, Maryland and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest M. Colvin and Leland S. Colvin.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 28, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Madison, with interment in Walker's United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Clayton and Pastor Toliver Utz officiated.
Rear Admiral Alexander Jackson Jr.
Rear Admiral Alexander Jackson, Jr., USN (ret) died October 1, 2002. He was born in 1904 and was a native of Alabama. Admiral Jackson and his wife Pat retired to Rapidan in 1959 and in the 80's moved to Red Hill Road in Orange.
Admiral Jackson graduated from the Naval Academy in 1925 and served 34 years before retiring in 1958. In the early part of World War II, he commanded several destroyer escorts while on convoy duty in the North and South Atlantic. Later, he joined the Pacific war and as Commander of a squadron of destroyer escorts, he was Halsey's screen commander and was credited with the sinking of six enemy submarines. After the war, he served on General MacArthur's staff to write the history of Japanese anti-submarine warfare in the Pacific. During his Navy career he was awarded the Legion of Merit and two Bronze Stars. After the war, he was sent to China to reopen the United States Consular Office in Amoy. Upon retirement, he joined the Reserve Officers' Association as Assistant Executive Director.
Admiral Jackson was active in the Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his son, Rear Admiral Alex Jackson, III, USNR (ret) and his wife Rachel; a daughter, Mary Caroline Bledsoe; two grandchildren, Alex Jackson IV of Darien, Connecticut and Jacqueline Bledsoe and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 5, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange, with interment in Emanuel Episcopal Church Cemetery, Rapidan.
Pallbearers were Henry Lee Carter, William Collier, Thomas Filer, Benjamin Johnson, Robert Shreve and Frank Walker.

Chase D. Pinkham
Chase Daniel Pinkham, infant son of Chris and Christy Pinkham, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002. He was grandson of Jay and Sylvia McDevitt of Catlett, Alcide and Laura Bouchard of Portage Lake, Maine, Debra Moir of Ashland, Maine, Rodney and Bonnie Pinkham of Somersworth, New Hampshire; great-grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. John F. McDevitt of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Elmer and Shirley Gaetz of Berwick, Maine, Robert and Shirley Pinkham of Dover, New Hampshire, and the late Winnie Howes; nephew of Sylvia McDevitt of Orange, Alexander Johnson, Anna Johnson, Shelly Bolsteridge of Ashland, Maine, Cory Dieicco, Robert, Timothy and Heather Pinkham of Dover.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 5, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton.

James Younger
James (Flash) Younger, 83, of Orange, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at Culpeper Health Care Center. Born May 3, 1919 in Orange County, he was son of the late Garfield and Anna Younger. His wife was the late Rosa Mae Jackson Younger. He was also preceded in death by a step-son, Raymond Jackson; a sister, Mrs. Marie Younger; and a brother, Hesica Younger. Mr. Younger worked in maintenance.
Survivors include step-sons, James, William and Howard Jackson of Orange; step-daughters, Mrs. Pearl Woodard of Rapidan and Mrs. Dorothy Thomas of Orange; a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Braxton of Culpeper; a brother, Breece Younger of Lynchburg; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 6, at Satchell's Funeral Chapel, Orange, with interment in Westview Cemetery.
The Rev. Ludwell Brown officiated.
Dorothy A. Barfield
Dorothy Annette (Ann) Barfield, 49, of Orange, died Thursday, October 17, 2002, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. Born October 15, 1953, in Culpeper, she was a daughter of the late A. Jack Barfield and Marguerite Heflin Barfield. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Barfield.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Wade Barfield and fianc'e, Jodi Jennings, of Haymarket and Brandon Thomas Barfield of Orange; four sisters, Frances Racer of Orange, Eva Brown, Marion Dodson and Kay Barfield, all of Culpeper and two brothers, Ed Barfield of Unionville and Charles Barfield of Culpeper; two sisters-in-law, J. J. Barfield of Orange and Patty Corbin of Culpeper and special friends, Evelyn Cunningham and Bobby Lane, both of Culpeper.
A memorial service was held October 22 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, Culpeper.

Martin J. Kenealy
Martin J. Kenealy, 74, of Granbury, Texas, formerly of Massachusetts, died October 18, 2002, at his residence. Born December 16, 1927, in Boston, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late Martin Kenealy and Mary Wise Kenealy. Mr. Kenealy was a draftsman for General Dynamics, a Navy Veteran of World War II, a member of St. Jerome's Knights of Columbus, the Big Brothers Association, the Granbury Volunteer Brigade and a member of Western Hills Harbor Board. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Theresa H. Foley Kenealy; two sons, Stephen and Martin F. Kenealy and a daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Kenealy.
Surviving are a son, Francis (Frank) Kenealy of Virginia; five daughters, Barbara A. DiBona of Massachusetts, Mary T. Dodson of Florida, Patricia R. Morales of Texas, Catherine J. Lozano of Maine and Theresa M. Dodson of Virginia; a sister, Mary Gregwar and Beverly Mandaul, both of Massachusetts and 11 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Friday, October 25, at 9 a.m. at St. John's Baptist Church, Quincy Center, with interment in Old North Cemetery, Weymouth, Massachusetts.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, October 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sweeney Funeral Home, 74 Elm Street, Quincy Center, Massachusetts.

Ruth K. Machin
Ruth Kube Machin, 59, died Friday, October 4, 2002, in Pueblo, Colorado. Born November 27, 1942, in Charlottesville, she was a daughter of Florence Kube of Orange and the late Howard Kube. Mrs. Machin grew up in Orange, graduating from Orange County High School in 1962. In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Edna Kube and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Machin.
In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Walter E. Machin, Jr. of Thornton, Colorado; two daughters, Lara Canen of Laramie, Wyoming and Patricia Zupan of Superior, Colorado; a brother, Joseph Kube of Orange and six grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service, followed by interment, was held October 10, 2002, at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Colorado.
Mattie F. Maddox
Mattie Florence Maddox, 81, of Orange, died Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Born in Albemarle County, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Mattie Thurston Woodson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney A. Maddox; a daughter, Hallie Maddox and two sons, Earl Franklin and Daniel Maddox.
Surviving are four daughters, Virginia Sieber of Hornwall Tennessee, Bertha Brown and husband, Malcolm, of Orange, Florence Maddox of Culpeper and Judy Brown of Unionville; two sons, Charles Maddox of New Carrollton, Maryland and Sidney A. Maddox, Jr. and wife, Dyann, of Rixeyville; two sisters, Elliwood Caul of Charlottesville and Dorothy Wright of Crozet; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Maddox of Orange; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, on October 20 with interment following in North Pamunkey Baptist Church Cemetery. Pastor Larry Morris and Dr. Charles Shifflett officiated.
Pallbearers were David May, Danny and Jeff Hunt, Jack Tinsley, Ricky Southard and David Sturgell.
Helen W. Murphy
Helen Marie Wood Murphy, 91, of Stanardsville, died October 18, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Born July 1, 1911, in Blue Island, Illinois, she was a daughter of the late William Walter Wood and Florence Brewer Wood. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Loira Murphy; two brothers, Fred and Charles Wood and a sister, Ruth B. Bettenhausen.
Survivors include three daughters, Evelyn Marie Benson of Orland Park, Illinois, Leona Florence Chavez of New Lenox, Illinois and Patricia Ann Murphy of Palmyra; two sons, Robert Wilson Murphy of Unionville and William Walter Murphy of Woodstock, Georgia; a brother, Robert W. Wood of Green Mt., North Carolina; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 16 nieces and nephews and a number of great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held October 22, at Evergreene Nursing Home, Stanardsville, conducted by Pastor Matthew W. Jones, IV.

James Edward Washington, Sr., 62, of Madison, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at his residence. Born in Culpeper October 6, 1940, he was a son of the late Amos and Mildred Ann Washington. Mr. Washington was a truck driver for Merchants Grocery of Culpeper and a mason.
Surviving are his wife, Nouvelle Leona Washington; two daughters, Leatha Ann Washington of Spotsylvania and Sharon Marie Washington of Orange; a son, James Edward Washington, Jr. of Spotsylvania; a stepdaughter, Leslie Danielle DeRoza of Fredericksburg; four stepsons, George Michael Minor of Rapidan, Wayne Williams, Jr. and Jeremy Jackson, both of Madison and Shannon DeRoza of Bermuda; eight brothers, Henryford, Martin, Roy and George Washington, all of Culpeper, Joseph Washington of Lignum, Billy Newman of Dale City, Thomas Washington of Washington, D.C. and Preston Washington of West Virginia; three sisters, Martha W. Brand of Troy, Sarah N. Duncan and Alice Newman, both of Washington, D.C. and four grandchildren, Gary Washington, Antoinne Jones, Jamin Desmond Menefee and James Washington, III.
A funeral service was held October 19, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Gregory Baldwin officiated.
