Marie J. DaRoza
Marie DaRoza, a Hollister resident and avid bowler, died January 6. She was 68.
Mrs. DaRoza was born in San Jose and spent most of her life in Hollister. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Y.L.I. of Hollister for over 30 years and a member of the Hollister Women’s Bowling League. Mrs. DaRoza’s family and her home were her primary interests, said her four children. Mrs. DaRoza was a homemaker for more than 45 years.
Mrs. DaRoza is survived by her son Mark DaRoza of Hollister, son Danny DaRoza of Hollister daughter Janice DaRoza of Morgan Hill son Dean DaRoza of Hollister, brother John Lomanto of Hollister, brother Carmen Lomanto of Hollister, brother Sam Lomanto of Hollister, sister Marian Falconi of Hollister, sister Lucy Intravia of Hollister and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Anthony DaRoza, who died January 1992 and her brother Tony Lomanto.
The funeral was Wednesday and entombment followed at Calvary Mausolem.
Donations are preferred to the Visiting Nurses or Cancer Society c/o the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home chapel.
Jennei S. Lombardi
Jennei Lombardi, a Hollister resident, died January 8. She was 87.
Mrs. Lombardi was born November 14, 1913 in Chicago, IL., and had lived in Hollister for the past 11 years.
Mrs. Lombardi is survived by her son Anthony Lombardi of Hollister, brother Sal Termini of Berwyn, four grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Anthony Lombardi, who died March 1997.
Visitation will be today from 4-8 p.m. at Mission Mortuary Chapel in Monterey. The vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. at the Mortuary Chapel. Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at San Carlos Cathedral, Monterey. Burial will follow at the San Carlos Catholic Cemetery also in Monterey.

Marie Christensen Rezendes
Marie Christensen Rezendes, a long-time volunteer for the Hazel Hawkins Auxiliary, died suddenly Jan. 8 while a patient at the hospital. She was 85.
Mrs. Rezendes was born in Hollister, raised on the Flint Ranch and attended San Juan Grammar School and Hollister High School. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Native Daughters of the Golden West, the San Benito County Cattlewomen’s Association, the San Benito County Employees Association and was a former member of the B.P.W.
Mrs. Rezendes worked as a clerk in San Benito County Superior Court for 20 years and before that worked for 20 years at Tiffany Motor Co.
Mrs. Rezendes was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Rezendes. She is survived by siblings Thelma Shumway of Turlock, Ted Christensen of Stockton and Grace Edlund of Richfield, Idaho. She also is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral is today at 1 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Contributions are preferred to the Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation or to the Hospital Thrift Shop.
Sergio A. Sanchez
Sergio A. Sanchez, a Hollister resident, died January 2, 2001. He was 30.
Mr. Sanchez was born in Hollister and graduated from San Benito High School. After high school he served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Sanchez is survived by his mother Theresa Sanchez of Hollister, brother Luis Sanchez of Hollister, daughter Melissa Sanchez of San Diego, daughter Isabel Sanchez of San Diego, daughter Sarah Sanchez of San Diego, grandmother Isabel Garcia of Hollister and grandfather Manuela Garcia of Hollister. He was preceded in death by his brother Ed Sanchez, who died in 1998.
Arrangements and cremation are through Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home and Gavilan Hills Crematory. Private family inurnment is planned.
Sally Ann Banks
Sally Ann Banks, a Hollister resident, died January 1. She was 53.
Mrs. Banks was born in Hollister and attended Hollister schools and went to Gavilan College. Her interests were her family, children and grandchildren. She enjoyed dancing and horseback riding. Mrs. Banks was a receptionist at the former Coopers & Lybrand Accounting Firm in San Jose.
Mrs. Banks is survived by her husband James Kenneth Banks of Salina, Kansas, son Brian Garcia of San Jose, son Tyson Garcia of San Jose, daughter Danielle Horio of San Jose, brother Adolph Cosio of Hollister, brother Gilbert Cosio of San Jose, brother Robert Cosio of San Juan Bautista, brother Joseph Cosio of Santa Cruz, brother Harvey Cosio of Hollister, sister Molly Clemente of Folsom, sister Helen Andrade of Hollister, several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Banks was preceded in death by her brother Pete Cosio and sister Marian Lopez.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral services on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be today from noon until 7 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. until service time.
Missa Carney
Missa Carney, who fled revolutionary Russia in 1928, died December 29 at Southside Convalescent Hospital in Hollister. She was 89.
Mrs. Carney was born in Krevoya Osero, Russia. She came to the United States in 1928 after civil war broke out in Russia after the revolution. She and her husband had lived in various places in the United States and she had been involved in the Red Cross during WWII. She met her husband, Clarence, who died in 1979 working with the Red Cross.
Mrs. Carney received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of California-Berkeley and for many years was a psychiatric social worker for the State of California. She moved to Hollister from Palo Alto in 1996 to be with her daughter. She had lived most of her married life in Palo Alto where she belonged to Hadassah, a Jewish Women’s organization.
Mrs. Carney is survived by her daughter Martha Lantz of Hollister, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she preceded in death by her brother Milton Polissar.
A private interment will be at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto today. Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Reynalda Mendoza
Reynalda Mendoza, a Hollister resident, died December 23. She was 77.
Mrs. Mendoza was born in Mexico and came to Hollister in October from Coalcoman, Mexico, to visit family when she fell ill. While in Hollister she attended Sacred Heart and St. Benedict’s Church and was a member of a prayer group at Sacred Heart Church.
Mrs. Mendoza is survived by her daughter Teresa Bautista of Hollister, daughter Amelia Milanes of Hollister, son Juan Andrade of Fresno, son Eliodoro Andrade of Mexico, daughter Graciela Andrade of Mexico, daughter Ofelia Andrade of Mexico, daughter Alicia Andrade of Mexico, sister Maria Mendoza of Mexico, brother Antonio Mendoza of Mexico, brother Cristobal of Mexico, brother Nolberto Mendoza of Mexico, sister Francisca Mendoza of Winnemucca, NV, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Rosary and vigil service was Friday at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Funeral and interment will be in Coalcoman, Michoacan, Mexico. Friends paid their respects Friday afternoon and evening at the funeral home chapel.
Joanne M. Pettie
Joanne M. Pettie, a Hollister native who worked for Chamberlain Acres, died Dec. 31 after a sudden illness. She was 64.
Mrs. Pettie attended San Benito High School and moved away with her family until 1974, when she returned. She worked at Tri-Valley Growers for six years and at Chamberlain for 20.
Mrs. Pettie is survived by her children Ida Richardson Hill of Florida, Robert Pettie of Hollister and Frank Pettie of Hollister, her sisters Barbara Bravo of Hollister and Mary Fartes of Hollister. She also is survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Evening services will be today at 7 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home, with the funeral Friday at 10 a.m.
Luis M. Alvarez
Luis M. Alvarez, who owned Alvarez Auto Repair in the early 1990s, died Christmas Day in Hollister. He was 53.
Mr. Alvarez had moved to Texas five years ago and was visiting his family when he died. In Donna, Tx., he worked for the school district maintenance department.
Mr. Alvarez is survived by his children Linda Alnas, Dianna Alvarez and Luis Alvarez Jr. of Hollister and Lee Alvarez of Texas, his mother Martina Alvarez of Texas, siblings Jesus Alvarez of Los Banos, Marciano Alvarez of Hollister, Frank Alvarez of Hollister, Natalie Sosa of Hollister, Juana Alvarez, Elisa Alvarez, Juanita Salinas, Lupe Lopez and Mary Garza of Texas. He also is survived by two grandchildren.
The rosary and vigil are tonight at 7 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Services are Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the chapel, proceeding to Sacred Heart Church for a 10 a.m. mass. Interment follows at Calvary Cemetery.
Rose Mary Cox
Rose Mary Cox, a Hollister resident known for her hospital volunteer work, died at her home on Dec. 21. She was 88.
Mrs. Cox was born in Greenfield and came to San Benito in 1950. She attended Greenfield and Gonzales schools and graduated from King City High School. Mrs. Cox was a member of the Hazel Hawkins Hospital Auxiliary since 1969 and Glad Tiding Church of San Juan Bautista. She worked for Roy Hegg’s 5 & 10 Store in Hollister, Herbert Schulze Store and City TV in Hollister.
Mrs. Cox is survived by her son Davie of Tres Pinos, daughter Carmen Miguel of Hollister, several grandchildren, brother Lawrence of Greenfield, brother Fred of Greenfield, sister Carol of Greenfield, sister Shirley Franscioli of King City, sister Clare Juster of Salinas, very close family friend Pastor John and Jo Amelio of Hollister, 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband Don Cox, who died in 1981.
The funeral was Friday in the chapel of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home and was officiated by Pastor John Amelio of the Glad Tidings Church in San Juan Bautista. Burial and graveside services followed at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Joey Miguel, Mike Miguel, David Tomasini, Jeff Tomasini, Dennis Fraser, Caleb Porteur and Josiah Porteur.
Contributions are preferred to the Glad Tidings Church in San Juan Bautista.
