Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Krone
Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Krone, a former local teacher, died March 2 in Bulliton.
Mrs. Krone was born in 1907 in Labam, Washington. She married John Krone in 1927. She taught school in San Benito County at the Santa Ana, Enterprise and South Side schools. Her husband John preceded her in death.
Betty loved golf and won many trophies. She is survived by her children David Krone of Etna, daughter Vera Ann Prommer of Orange County, Carolyn Howard of Missouri, nine grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. No services are planed.
Carmen V. Rodriguez
Carmen Rodriguez, a Hollister resident, died March 9. She was 77.
Mrs. Rodriguez was born in Los Angeles and came to San Benito when she was six years old. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and she was a homemaker all her adult life.
Mrs. Rodriguez is survived by her brother Tony Ruiz of Hollister, brother Manuel Ruiz of Hollister, several niece and nephews and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother John Ruiz.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary was Monday at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. The funeral was Tuesday with burial and graveside services at the Calvary Cemetery.
Contributions are preferred to San Benito Home Health Care, American Cancer Society or St. Benedict Church.
Feliciano M. "Felix" Salcido
Felix Salcido, a WWII veteran, died March 8. He was 80.
Mr. Salcido was born in La Union, Texas and came to San Benito in 1969. He served in the US Army during WWII and was a member of Mission San Juan Bautista. He was active in the Senior Citizens Program.
Mr. Salcido is survived by his son Felix Salcido of Mountain View, son Baldo Salcido of San Juan Bautista, daughter Angie Talavera of Hollister, stepson Gilbert Munoz of Hollister, stepdaughter Carol Rivera of Hollister, sister Lupe Gonzales of Wilmington, sister Rory Rocha of Canutillo, Texas, sister Josephine Orozco of Pittsburgh, brother Juan Salcido of La Union, Texas, 12 grandchildren, nine step grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Oscar M. Salcido, stepson Armando Munoz, father Luis Salcido, mother Manuela Salcido, sister Amalia Perez, brother Luis Salcido and brother Robert Salcido.
The funeral was at mission San Juan Bautista where a mass of Christian burial was celebrated. Interment and graveside services were at San Juan District Cemetery with military rites being offered by San Juan Bautista VFW.
Donations are preferred to the Senior Citizens Program in Hollister c/o the funeral home.
Theresa Vargas Sanchez
Theresa Sanchez, a Hollister resident, died March 9. She was 75.
Mrs. Sanchez was born in Reedley and came to San Benito when she was a young girl. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Teamsters Union Local 890 and worked for many years for Tri Valley Growers.
Mrs. Sanchez is survived by her son Benjamin Sanchez of Hollister, daughter Judy Ann Sanchez of Hollister, brother Frank Vargas of Hollister, sister Soledad Sanchez of Hollister and sister Sara Hernandez of Mexico.
The Rosary and vigil was Wednesday. The funeral services will begins today at Black Cooper Sander and then proceeds to Sacred Heart Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment and graveside services will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery.
Albert Fred Yensan
Albert Fred Yensan, a retired Major for the U.S. Army, died March 8. He was 89.
Mr. Yensan was born in Grand Island, New York and came to San Benito 14 years ago. He lived in California from 1920-1955, Germany from 1955-1958 and moved back to California in 1958. He was a member of B.P.O.E. 1436 of Hollister, American Legion of Carmel, Ridgemark Golf & County Club, S.I.R.S. at Ridgemark, TROA-Retired Officers Association and the 66th Panther Division – those who served in Europe during WWII. He served both in WWII and the Korean War. He was a self employed real estate broker for Bernard Young Realty in Medford, Oregon before moving to Hollister. He served in the military for 28 years. His hobbies were golf and playing cards.
Mr. Yensan is survived by his wife Doris Virginia Yensan of Hollister, brother Oscar Yensan of Florida, sister Mildred Cipollone of Lemon Grove, sister Millicent Herman of New York, sister Roberta Yensan of New York, son James Yensan of Louieville, Colorado, son Jerald Yensan of Denton, Texas, two grandsons, two granddaughters, three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements have been made for cremation through Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Crematory. At his request there will be no services. Interment of his cremains will be at San Joaquin National Cemetery.
Donations are preferred to Alzheimer’s Association or Hospice of Central Coast c/o the mortuary chapel.
Michael Thomas Ghione
Michael Ghione, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, died March 2. He was 55.
Mr. Ghione was born and reared in Hollister and attended Gavilan College. After graduating high school he joined the Air Force. He worked for various construction companies before becoming a self-employed carpenter. He is a former member of Carpenters Union Locals in Gilroy and Martel, CA antique. He loved his Harley and collecting and restoring cars. He loved the out of doors.
Mr. Ghione is survived by his wife Harriet Ghione of Sonora, son Brian Ghione of Modesto, son Jeremy Ghione of Modesto, daughter Stacey Ghione of Sonora, son Randal Ghione of Sonora, his father Frank Ghione of Sonora, sister Gale Campbell of Sonora, four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and other family members. He was preceded in death by his mother Reba Ghione, who died June 2000.
Arrangements have been made for cremation. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Private interment at IOOF Cemetery, Hollister.
Donations to Cancer Society preferred.
Hortense E. "Tessie" Roe
Hortense Roe, a former Hollister resident, died February 24. She was 90.
Mrs. Roe was born in Denver. She served in the Women’s Army Corps during WWII and had been the postmaster at Tres Pinos Post Office in the past. Her interests include floral design and geology. She married Earl Roe at Carmel by the Sea in 1951. When she lived in the Hollister area she attended the Calvary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Roe is survived by her sister Hazel Hupfer of Arvada, CO, sister Dorothy Harrington of Denver, CO, nephew Carl Berglund of Westminster, CO, nephew Keith Berglund of Arvada, CO, niece Dolores Rich of Arvada, CO, nephew Donald Hupfer of Woodlake Park, CO and niece Lorrayne Eagles of Lakewood, CO.
Graveside services were March 6 at the IOOF Cemetery. Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Elsie R. Schieler
Elsie Schieler, a Hollister resident, died March 5, 2001. She was 94.
Mrs. Schieler was born in Germany and she came to America in the 1920’s following WWI and lived in Gilroy for many years. Her husband Adolf was a self-employed plumber in Gilroy. She moved to Hollister from Gilroy in 1979 to be close to her daughter and family after her husband Adolf died.
Mrs. Schieler is survived by her daughter Elizabeth "Betty" Lomanto of Hollister, grandson Nick Lomanto of Hollister, granddaughter Kristy Marcus of Hollister, grandson Russell Lomanto of Hollister, six great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.
The funeral is today at 10 a.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Rev. David Rodriguez of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Interment and graveside services will follow the funeral at the IOOF Cemetery where Mrs. Schieler will be interred next to her husband.
Donations are preferred to Hazel Hawkins Southside Convalescent Hospital c/o Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home.
Cyrus G. Shoghi
Cyrus Shoghi, a Hollister resident, died March 4. He was 67.
Mr. Shoghi was born in Tehran, Iran, and came to San Benito nine years ago. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling through the United States and to his homeland. His interests include gardening, fishing and cooking. He spent his life in the electronics industry in San Jose.
Mr. Shoghi is survived by his son Paul Shoghi of San Diego, son Darin Shoghi of Napa, daughter Melissa Shoghi-Smith of Washington, son Jason Shoghi of Chicago, brother Dariouche Shoghi of San Clemente, brother Barham Shoghi of San Jose, brother Bahman Shoghi of Mt. View, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements for cremation have been made through Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Crematory. The graveside service was Wednesday at the Los Gatos Memorial Park, Los Gatos, CA.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Society c/o the mortuary chapel.
Ilse Josefa Bedolla
Ilse Josefa Bedolla, a toddler who lived in Hollister, died Feb. 21 at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto. She was 2.
Ilse is survived by her father Rigoberto Bedolla of Hollister, her mother Lily Perez of Gilroy, brothers Richard Anthony Andrade of Gilroy and Rigoberto Bedolla Jr. of Hollister. She also is survived by grandparents Josefa Bedolla of Mexico and Isaias Bedolla of Chular and Gustavo and Guadalupe Perez of Mexico, Olivia Hernandez, Sandra Bedolla of Chular, uncle Steven Hernandez of Gilroy and aunt Connie Hernandez of Gilroy, aunt Marie Ascencio of Chular, many great aunts, great uncles and cousins.
A vigil was Monday at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. The funeral was Tuesday with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
A memorial trust fund has been established at South Valley National Bank, Account #52047636. The family would appreciate that those who wish to make donations in her memory.
Ernest Frank Castro
Ernest Frank Castro, a Hollister native, died Feb. 25 at his home in Gustine. He was 50.
Mr. Castro had lived in Gustine for 10 years. He worked as a warehouseman with Safeway Company for eight years.
Mr. Castro attended Our Lady of Miracles Catholic Church in Gustine and was a Vietnam Army Veteran.
Mr. Castro is survived by his parents, Ernest and Hazel Castro of Gustine; his brothers, Ray Castro of Angels Camp, Ken Castro and Gary Castro both of Gustine; his sisters, Barbara Nelson of Gustine and Mary Jimenez of Hollister.
A graveside service was held Wednesday at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.
Violet E. DeRosa
Violet DeRosa, a Hollister resident, died February 27, 2001. She was 76.
Mrs. DeRosa was born in Gustine and came to San Benito over 50 years ago. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 6359 of San Juan Bautista. Mrs. De Rosa’s life work was as a homemaker and a housewife.
Mrs. DeRosa is survived by her son, James DeRosa of Hollister, grandson Bryan DeRosa of Hollister, sister Georgia Giannotti of Castroville and nephew William Giannotti of Hollister. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph DeRosa, who died in 1981, and daughter Nancy DeRosa.
The funeral will be today at 9:30 a.m., when family and friends will gather at the chapel of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home then proceed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a funeral Mass commencing at 10 a.m. Burial and graveside services will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
David Phillip McKibben
David "Puncher" McKibben, the former owner of Frenchy’s Bar in San Juan Bautista who gained notoriety in the late 1980s after inventing a plastic horseshoe that was considered more natural than steel, died Feb. 23 in his sleep at home in Hollister. He was 58.
Mr. McKibben was a farrier popular among horse owners in both San Benito County and around the country who appreciated that his invention was a more humane and natural fit on horses’ hooves.
"He was called all over the country to shoe crippled horses,’’ said Jonean Chance, a local engineer who designed McKibben’s plastic shoe for him. "He could re-grow a hoof with that restoration shoe. He was really good at what he did."
Mr. McKibben’s plastic horseshoe was written about extensively in the late 1980s in both the local media and national horse journals. But it was his roping abilities for which he was best known. McKibben competed at both the Cow Palace in San Francisco and at the world’s richest team roping event in Denton, Texas, and, of course, at Bolado Park.
Mr. McKibben was born and reared in Yearington, Nev., where his family was involved in cattle ranching. He was a graduate of Reno High School.
Mr. McKibben attended Gavilan College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys’ Association and a team roping competitor on the U.S. rodeo circuit.
Mr. McKibben is survived by his daughter, Stacy Frusetta of Hollister, friend Gilbert Love of Hollister, brothers Herbert McKibben of Paradise and Joe McKibben of Reno, stepsister Judy Mick of Colorado, two grandchildren and four nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno.
