Arlene Allen
Arlene Allen, an Aromas resident who was featured in The Pinnacle in December 1999 after a group gave her a new mobile home for Christmas, died in Hollister on April 18. She was 83.
Mrs. Allen was born in Iowa and moved to Aromas from Salinas in 1978. Her great passion in life was her love for her cats. In 1999 she was taking care of her mother and living in a home that leaked so badly the light fixtures filled with water. Christmas In April bought her a new mobile home, which she shared with her cat, Rosie, and others.
Mrs. Allen is survived by her daughter, Laurie Moss of Hollister, son Darrell Allen of Sacramento, mother Marjorie LaTour of Hollister, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Heath, in 1986.
A service was held on April 23 at Garden of Memories memorial Park in Salinas.
Donations are preferred to a charity of choice that will benefit the care of animals. Arrangements are through Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home in Hollister.
Shirley M. "Honey" Bailey
Shirley Bailey, a Hollister resident, died March 19. She was 74.
Mrs. Bailey was born in Hollister. She and her husband were married May 18, 1946 in Hollister, moved to Morgan Hill and she and her family moved back to Hollister in 1962. She was lovingly called "Honey" by her grandchildren.
Mrs. Bailey is survived by her husband, Robert Bailey Sr., of Hollister, daughter Judy Tompkins of Hollister, daughter Linda Harris of Lancaster, mother Olive Thomas of Hollister, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren. Mrs. Bailey preceded in death by her son Robert Bailey Jr. and her father Stanford Campbell.
A memorial service was held April 24 at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Rev. Joe Mallinson of the Seventh Day Adventist Church officiated. Inurnment was at the IOOF Cemetery.
Donations are preferred to charity of choice.
Loretta Ione Claypool
Loretta Ione Claypool, who grew up in southern San Benito County, died April 17 in Santa Clara. She was 87.
Mrs. Claypool spent her childhood in San Benito and was the daughter of the late Murt and Maude Shields. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Claypool.
Mrs. Claypool was a second-grade teacher for more than 40 years in the Santa Clara Unified School District, a member of the Eastern Star and a long-time volunteer at the Santa Clara Senior Center.
She is survived locally by cousins Viella Hardin and Dorothy Marentis of Hollister.
Services were April 20 at the Lima Family Mortuary in Santa Clara.
Corinne L. Garat
Corinne Garat, founder and member of the local Children’s Home Society, died April 18. She was 98.
Mrs. Garat was born in Erie, Kansas and came to San Benito in 1941. She is founder and member of the local Children’s Home Society, now the Gabilan Chapter Kinship Center, and had an honorary privileged membership. She also was a former trustee of San Benito High school.
Mrs. Garat was an avid bridge player and played all her life up until just a few weeks ago. She was the youngest of eight children and married into a pioneer western family with ranch holdings in both Elko County, Nev. and San Benito County. Her husband, George, was a longtime rancher related to the Indart family.
Mrs. Garat is survived by her son Tom Garat of Hollister, granddaughter Irene Sanchez of Tres Pinos, granddaughter Michelle Kaus of Mariposa, granddaughter Heather Garat, who is in the U.S. Navy, grandson Josh Garat of Grants Pass, Ore., four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Garat was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Garat, who died in 1958.
The funeral was Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Burial and graveside services followed at Calvary Cemetery.
Contributions are preferred to the Gabilan Chapter, Kinship Center c/o the funeral home.
John M. Maddux
John M. Maddux, a long-time Hollister resident most remembered for barbering, died April 22. He was 59.
Mr. Maddux was born January 13, 1943 in Tulare and had spent most of his life in Hollister. Mr. Maddux was a graduate of San Benito High School and the Barbers College in San Jose. He was a member of the Hollister Lodge No. 1436, B.P.O.E. and the Newman Rotary Club. He had lived in Newman for 12 years, working for Patchetts Ford Dealership and for M & M Chevrolet. He worked as a barber both in San Jose and Hollister from 1960 to 1973.
Mr. Maddux opened his first barbershop on Fourth Street in Hollister in 1965 and later he moved his shop to the corner of Briggs Alley and San Benito Street behind the family’s jewelry store. He was the first male appointment only shop in Hollister and was very successful. When Mr. Maddux retired from barbering he sold cars for Tiffany Motor Company both at the original location and the new one. He loved the out-of-doors, golfing, water skiing at Bass Lake, Lake Shasta and Coyote Lake in Gilroy. Mr. Maddux enjoyed riding motorcycles and driving with his wife to the Monterey Coast. He always wanted to go to Alaska and two years ago, while his health permitted, he and his wife traveled there. Square dancing was also an interest. While in Newman Mr. Maddux was a eucharist minister at Our Lady of Miracles Church in Gustine.
Mr. Maddux is survived by his wife, Terri Maddux of Hollister, mother Alice L. Maddux of Hollister, son John Maddux Jr. of San Jose, daughter Julie Hogeman of Hollister, daughter Amie Bland of Hollister, daughter Stephanie Bland of Hollister, brother Rick Maddux of Hollister, three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass today at 6 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Church, 1200 Fairview Road, Hollister. Inurnment will follow at St. Benedict’s Columbarium.

Lois D. Sanard
Lois D. Sanard, a Hollister resident died April 18. She was 74.
Mrs. Sanard was born in Sacramento and has been a Hollister resident for many years working for the Bank of America and was active with Welcome Wagon. She attended Immaculate Conception Church in Tres Pinos, as well as Sacred Heart Church in Hollister and earlier in her life attended the Methodist Church. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Order of Easter Star. While with Bank of America she was the first involved with the Young Savers Program through local schools.
Mrs. Sanard is survived by her daughter, Janet Jaurigue of Salinas, son Paul Sanard of Hollister, brother Bob Molander, sister Shirley Green, brother Wallace Molander, sister Carmel Johnson sister Dorothy Clanton, and three grandchildren. Mrs. Sanard was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Sanard, who died in 1974.
A memorial Mass was held on April 21 at Sacred Heart Church in Hollister. Rev. Dick Clark was the celebrant with music by Margaret Velho.

Paul L. Thoman
Paul Thoman, a well-known figure at San Jose’s Mel Cotton’s Sporting Goods, died April 23. He was 83.
Mr. Thoman was born in Cincinnati and had lived in San Jose for many years, working for FMC Corporation for 30 years. After retirement he joined Mel Cotton’s Sporting Goods and in the summers worked as a senior ranger naturalist at Tioga Lake in Yosemite National Park. He was an avid photographer.
Mr. Thoman is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Claudia and Cliff Cardoza of Hollister, son James J. Thoman of San Jose, granddaughter Julie Ann Scola of Saratoga, granddaughter Debra Jean Papazzian of Salinas, sister Margaret Clark of Elbert, Colo., brother Victor Thoman of Calistoga, brother Neil Thoman of Grass Valley and three great grandchildren. Mr. Thoman was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Thoman, in 1998 and his brother James Thoman.
Arrangements and cremation are through Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Donations are preferred to a favorite charity in memory of Mr. Thoman.
Marcos Jorge Torres
Marcos Jorge Torres, an infant boy, died in Santa Clara on April 18. He was three days old.
Marcos is survived by his mother, Christina Torres of Hollister, father, David Hernandez of Salinas, grandfather George Torres of Hollister and grandmother Martha Marquez of Hollister.
A funeral and graveside services were held Monday at Calvary Cemetery.
David A. Valderrama
David Valderrama, a Hollister resident, died April 21. He was 52.
Mr. Valderrama was born in Phoenix and came to San Benito County in 1954 as a young boy. He was employed in the lawn service business for the past year.
Mr. Valderrama is survived by his daughter, Olga Hansen of Hollister, son Michael Valderrama of Santa Cruz, brother Eulogio Valderrama of Riverside, brother John Valderrama of Northridge, sister Maria del Refugio Godinez of Phoenix, sister Rudy Valderrama of Montebello, sister Margie Canales of Hollister, sister Connie Aguilar of Turlock, sister Rosie Martinez of Hollister, brother Domingo Valderrama of San Jose, brother Herman Valderrama of Hollister, sister Emma Robles of San Jose, brother Bob Valderrama of Morgan Hill, brother Ruben Ponz of San Jose, brother Daniel Valderrama of San Jose, granddaughter Kaylee Shay Hansen, granddaughter Nicole Hansen also many nieces and nephews. Mr. Valderrama was preceded in death by his sister Carmen Morales.
Visitation will be on today from noon until 9 p.m. A prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy on Virginia Street in Hollister. Pastor Duarte Orellana will officiate. Interment will follow at the IOOF cemetery.
Grace Bray
Grace Bray, a lifelong San Benito County resident, died April 17 at Mee Memorial Hospital in King City.
Mrs. Bray was born and reared in the Bitterwater area and was the daughter of the late Nessen and Mary Schmidt.
The funeral at 2 p.m. Friday will be held under the direction of Whitehurst-Grimm Funeral Home, 429 Bassett St., King City.
Mrs. Bray is survived by sons Albert and Alvin and daughter Mary Anne. She also is survived by brothers Roy Schmidt of Hollister, Jef Schmidt of Bitterwater, sisters Faye Franscioni of Greenfield and Amy Lou Hall of Oklahoma. She also is survived by several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Arthur P. Donaleche
Services will be held Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. at San Juan Bautista Cemetery for Arthur P. Donaleche, who died in December. Mr. Donaleche will be given a traditional Native American ceremony, and a veteran’s ceremony with color guard.
Joseph Thanquilino Moreno
Joseph Moreno, a veteran of the U.S. Army, died April 9. He was 76.
Mr. Moreno was born in Hollister and lived in Reno/Sparks area for 25 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1941-1951. Mr. Moreno was a chef at Harrah’s Casino.
Mr. Moreno is survived by his wife, Glenna Moreno, of Sparks, Nev., son Joseph Moreno, Jr. of Sparks, Nev., daughter Sharon Moreno of Sparks, Nev., son Leon McBride of Boise, Id., son Mark Messanger, son Ronnie Moreno, daughter Donna Moreno, daughter Karen Smith, daughter Joni Moreno all of California, sister Erma Dehn of Minnesota, sister Loretta Sandoval, brother Fernando Moreno, brother Charlie Moreno all of California, 22 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Visitation was held Monday at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Interment with military honors was will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Eunice A. "Sam" Ramsay
Eunice Ramsay, a Hollister resident, died April 12. She was 75.
Mrs. Ramsay was born in San Francisco and moved to Hollister 12 years ago from Morgan Hill. She and her husband, Harry, were married in 1973 in Reno, Nev. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and had worked with her husband many years ago in his business, Harry Ramsay Sales.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 20 at 2 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. A reception will follow the services at Mission Oaks Mobile Home Park clubhouse.
