Leslie Earl St. John
Hollister native, Leslie Earl St. John, 79, died in Salinas on July 9, 2001.
He was a resident of Salinas for many years and before that lived in Hollister, where he worked for Hollister Garage as an auto mechanic. In Salinas he worked for Kaiser Refractories until he retired in 1985.
Mr. St. John had been married to his wife, Thelma, for 52 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1945, earned the rank of sergeant and received many decorations and citations. He was a member of Mound Lodge # 166 IOOF for 55 years and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers-Salinas Local #1824.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma St. John of Salinas, his children Paul St. John of Hollister, Leslie St. John of Salinas, James St. John of Salinas, Pauline Burton of Paris, Tex., 13 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A memorial services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home in Hollister. Rev. Ardyss Golden of the United Methodist Church and Mound Lodge #166 IOOF will officiate. Interment will follow the memorial services at the IOOF Cemetery.
Donations are refers to Visiting Nurses’ Association, PO Box 2480, Monterey, CA 93942.

Anna Willis
Anna Willis, a Hollister resident, died in Hollister July 7. She was 76.
Mrs. Willis was born in Hot Springs, Ark. She moved to Burney and then to Hollister. She has been a resident of Hollister for 32 years. Mrs. Willis worked at the New China Cafe' and owned her own restaurant at one time. She also received her Certified Nurses’ Assistant certificate and worked in the home health care field for many years. She also volunteered for the American Heart Association.
Mrs. Willis, wife of the late James Willis who died in 1992, is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Theresa and Danny Boyd of Hollister, her sister, Adeen Brooks of Redding and her brother, Johnny Jones of Hayfolk, her grandson, and three great grandchildren.
Friends and family paid their respects on Tuesday morning at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on July 10 at the funeral home chapel. Interment and graveside services followed the funeral at the IOOF Cemetery where she was interred with her husband, James.
Donations are preferred to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Willis’ memory.

Joe P. Angulo
Joe Angulo, a veteran of WWII, died June 29. He was 74.
Mr. Angulo was born in San Juan Bautista and was a veteran of WWII. He served in the U.S. Army tank division. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church.
Mr. Angulo worked for Ideal Cement Co. in San Juan Bautista for 20 years until it closed. He worked for San Benito County as a custodian for 10 years until his retirement. Mr. Angulo and his wife, Lupe Angulop, celebrated their 51st anniversary last November.
Mr. Angulo is survived by his wife, Lupe Angulop of Hollister, daughters Evelyn Valdivia of Hollister and Priscilla Angulo of Marina, two grandchildren, brothers Gilbert Angulo of Los Banos, Charlie Angulo of Santa Nella, Ruben Angulo and Manuel Angulo of San Juan Bautista, Moe Angulo and Alfonso Angulo of Hollister, sister Isabel Ybarra of Hollister and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by children Mary Jo Angulo in 1959, Joseph Daniel Angulo in 1989.
The funeral was Tuesday at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery.
Contributions are preferred to the VNA-Hospice of Hollister.=

Clark Allen Goldman
Clark Allen Goldman, a former Hollister resident, died on June 30. He was 18.
Goldman was born in Gilroy and was living in Knoxville, Tenn. at the time of his death.
Mr. Goldman is survived by his mother, Maria Goldman of Salinas, his father, Don Goldman of Knoxville, Tenn., brothers, Adam and Gabriele Cardova of Salinas, grandmother, Eleanor Goldman of Salinas, uncles, Randy and Ross Goldman of Salinas, his aunt, Vicki Larson of Salinas, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service, officiated by John Amelio, at the Church of Glad Tidings, 499 3rd St., San Juan Bautista, on July 9 at 7 p.m.

Clarence M. Smith
Clarence Smith, a one-time partner in the Smith & Taliaferro Union 76 Service Station, died July 3 at Hazel Hawkins Southside Convalescent Center. He was 93.
Mr. Smith was born in San Benito County and was a member of Hollister Elks Lodge. He was a partner in the Smith & Taliaferro Union 76 Service Station for nearly 30 years, until his retirement.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mary Smith of Hollister, children Myrna Klauer of San Jose, Gary Smith and Ricci Smith of Hollister, nine grandchildren, several great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son Eugene Smith, and five siblings.
The funeral is today at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Graveside services and burial will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Elizabeth "Babe" Dozal
Elizabeth Dozal, a former Hollister resident, died June 19. She was 49.
Mrs. Dozal was born in Brawley, CA and lived in Atwater prior to moving to Fresno just 3 years ago. She lived in Hollister from 1983 to 1995.
Mrs. Dozal is survived by her children Tony Huerta Jr. of Gilroy, Yolanda Huerta of Morgan Hill, Maria Huerta of Gilroy, Ruben Huerta of Merced, Rachel Rodriguez of Fresno, Roman Rodriguez III of Fresno, 3 brothers Ruben Dozal of Hollister, Ralph Dozal of Salinas, David Dozal of Corcoran, 1 sister Norma Dominguez of Anaheim and 13 grandchildren.
Friends paid their respects June 21 at 9 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Friday 10 a.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Louis Herrera of Victory Outreach officiated. Interment followed the services at Calvary Cemetery.

William Richard Davis Jr.
William Davis, a Hollister resident, died June 22. He was 44.
Mr. Davis was born in San Jose and came to San Benito 11 years ago. He received his education at Branham High School and West Valley College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. David loved sports and played in city recreation leagues. He loved his horses, working on his cars and home and was a benefactor to many needy organizations and those who needed assistance. Mr. Davis was a warehouse manager for Philip Semiconductor in San Jose for 21 years.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife Della Perez Davis of Hollister, his children Tanya Perez and Venito Perez of Hollister, mother Olive Davis of San Jose, brothers Brian Davis of Morgan Hill, Lawrence Davis of San Jose, uncle Buryl "JR" Moore of San Jose and many nieces and nephews. He preceded in death by his father William Richard Davis Sr.
Arrangements for cremation have been made through Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Crematory. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, 5100 Camden Ave., San Jose. Reception will follow.
Donations are preferred to St. Andrews Church in memory of William Davis Sr. & William Davis Jr. for their stained glass window fund in care of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home.

Margaret A. Lucchelli
Margaret Lucchelli, a Hollister resident, died June 18. She was 66.
Mrs. Lucchelli was a life long resident of San Benito County and was a resident of San Juan Bautista for well over 40 years. Mrs. Lucchelli graduated from San Benito High School and was a school bus driver for the Aromas/San Juan Elementary School Districts for the last 24 years, retiring last June. She was a member of Old Mission San Juan Bautista, the Ladies Auxiliary of Leslie L. Garratt Post 6359 and V.F.W. of San Juan Bautista. Mrs. Lucchelli was an active bingo supporter for many years in San Benito County, Salinas and Monterey. She loved to sew, knit and make arts & crafts at her home. She was an avid 49er & Giants fan, and her love of sports included the San Jose Sharks.
Mrs. Lucchelli is survived by her children Leonard Cardoza of Milpitas, Deborah Ann Clift of Cupertino, 1 grandson and several brothers, sisters and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband Daniel Cardoza who died in 1962 and her 2nd husband Robert Lucchelli who died in 1994.
At Mrs. Lucchelli’s request a memorial Mass of Resurrection was held last Friday at the Our Lady of Guadalupe chapel at the Old Mission San Juan Bautista which was followed by interment at the family plot in San Juan District Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the Cancer Society or Spiritual Bouquets offered c/o Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home.

Baudelia "Valda" Perry
Baudelia "Valda" Perry, wife of the late John Perry, died June 26 in Hollister. He was 70.
Mrs. Perry was born in New Idria and was a lifetime resident of San Benito County. She was a member of The Apostolic Full Gospel Church of Christ.
Mrs. Perry is survived by her children, Tim Perry, John D. Perry, Monica McPhail, all of Hollister, Desiree Campa of Morgan Hill and Gloria Vega of San Jose. She also is survived by her siblings, Frank Chavez of Hollister, Lena Cruz and Romelia Caloca of San Jose, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation is Friday from noon until 9 p.m at Black Cooper Sander, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. The funeral is Saturday at 10 a.m. with interment at the IOOF Cemetery.

Alma Volandri Robba
Alma Volandri Robba died June 13, 2001. "In her own time and in her own way," she wrote in her own obituary.
She was born in 1907 in San Francisco. She moved to Hollister in 1933 when she married Joe Robba, a local orchardist who was born in San Benito County in 1906. He preceded her in death in 1987.
She is survived by a son, Joseph Robba, a granddaughter, Loring Merrick Robba, and a daughter-in-law Claire Robba Giurlani, and many friends.
She arranged for cremation at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Crematory. There will be no service. Financial or food donations are preferred to the donor’s favorite charity or shelter.

John Edward Walter
John Edward Walter, a Hollister resident, died June 20. He was 53.
Mr. Walter was born in Woodland, CA and came to San Benito in 1996. He received his education at the San Jose Schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Walter was a custodian with Eastside Union High School for 27 years. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Walter loved fishing, lapidary, camping and riding roller coasters.
Mr. Walter is survived by his wife Sharon Walter of Hollister, 3 daughters Angela Walter of Willow Glen, Raschell Floodman of Gilroy, Nicole Baker of Hollister, 8 grandchildren, 3 brothers Tom Walker of Ravenna, Ohio, Robert Walter of San Jose, David Walter of Longmont, CO, 2 sisters, Donna Walker of San Jose, Marilynn Fowle of Fremont and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Monday, June 25th at 11 a.m. at the Home Church, 10 Mansfield Rd. at Fairview Rd., Hollister. Pastor Barry Olson officiated. Arrangements for cremation are under the direction of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home & Crematory.
Contributions are preferred to the John E. Memorial Fund.

Virginia "Ginger" and Elmer "Al" Berg
Memorial services were held on June 16 for Al and Ginger Berg, longtime residents of Hollister. Al died on January 23, 1991 at the age of 79, Ginger on June 14, 2001. She was 87.
They were born and married in Chicago and lived there until 1952, when they moved to California. They were preceded in death by their youngest granddaughter, Elizabeth, who died at age 8. Survivors are Bill Berg of Hollister, Zanne Mitchell of Santa Cruz and David Berg of San Jose, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
They were married 58 years.

Penny E. Fellows
Penny Fellows, a former Gilroy resident with children in Hollister, died June 17 in Phoenix. She was 60.
Mrs. Fellows was born in Bagley, Minnesota. She came to California from Oregon in 1970, settled in Gilroy and lived there for 12 years before moving to Phoenix in 1982. Mrs. Fellows was a waitress for Denny’s in Gilroy. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, doing crafts, and camping. She especially loved her time with her grandchildren, working crossword puzzles and Canasta.
Mrs. Fellows is survived by her children, Ken Fellows of Morgan Hill, Billy Fellows of Hollister, Teresa Terasaki of Hollister, four grandchildren, brothers Dennis Haugen of Washington, Kermit Haugen of Washington, Ray Haugen of Washington, Roger Haugen of Washington, Jerry Haugen of Montana, sisters Alice Sampson of Idaho, Barbara Bostrom of Arizona and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Society c/o the mortuary chapel.
