HORTON, Doris Mae Horton, 81 Atchison, KS passed away Thursday, December 2, 2004 at Medicalodge of Atchison.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, December 6, 2004 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with The Rev. R. Lee Hendon officiating. Burial at Sunset Memory Gardens. Mrs. Horton was born April 1, 1923 in Atchison, KS the daughter of Robert and Grace (Vermillion) Myers. She was a graduate of Atchison High School. She owned and operated Horton's Tavern with her husband for over 20 years where she enjoyed cooking and visiting with the customers. She was a member of the First Christian Church and was a member of the Ruth CWF Circle. Doris was very devoted to her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, home remedy medicine and always kept up on current world events.
She married Junior William Horton on January 4, 1943. He preceded her in death on August 26, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her son James Horton in 1979, granddaughter Stacey Horton, sister Mary Alice Corrozza and her parents.
Survivors include her sons John Horton and his wife Nancy and Bill Horton both of Atchison. 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Brother John Myers of Destin, FL.
KIEHL, Della B. Kiehl, 76, of Topeka, KS, formerly of Atchison, KS died Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at Stormont -Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka, KS.
Funeral Services will be 1:00 pm, Friday, December 3, 2004 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Nortonville, KS with Rev. Rick Twenhafel, officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, KS. Family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, Thursday, December 2, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, KS. Della was born July 16, 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama the daughter of Neil R. and Lily (Moreland) Walker. She and Russell E. Kiehl were married February 23, 1945 in Jasper, Alabama and soon after moved to Atchison, KS where they lived until moving to Topeka, KS this past October. Della had worked for the Wilson Poultry Company, Wendling Drug Store and Horton Garment Factory, all of Atchison before owning and operating the Kiehl Liquor Store in Atchison for twenty-six years.
Mrs. Kiehl was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Nortonville, long time member of the BPW (Business and Professional Womens Association) in Atchison, the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. She had also been a volunteer at the Atchison Hospital for over 26 years.
Survivors include her husband, Russell E. Kiehl of the home; one daughter and her husband, Jeannine A. and Stephen R. Wyatt of Topeka, KS; two brothers, Allen Walker of St. Joseph, MO and Raymond Walker of Kansas City, MO; a step sister, Edith of Montgomery, AL; two grandchildren, J. Kyle Wyatt of Topeka and Katherine Wyatt of Lawrence, KS; one great grandson, David Wyatt Turner of Lawrence.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Russell E. 'Bud' Kiehl, Jr.
ZACHER, Millicent M. Zacher, 57 Effingham, KS, passed away Monday, November 29, 2004 at her home.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, December 3, 2004 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The body will be cremated. Mrs. Zacher was born April 12, 1947 in Wichita, KS, the daughter of James S. and Ruth (Neilsen Rocha) Sacks. She graduated from A.C.C.H.S. in 1966. She had worked for St. Joseph Care Center in Kansas City, KS as an activities director. She was currently employed with McDonald's in Atchison, KS. Millicent was a family person who enjoyed pulling pranks, and was a wonderful cook.
Millicent married George Edward Zacher, they were married for over 22 years. Additional survivors include her children Marlena Wheeler and her husband Tom of Effingham, KS, Bradley Sobrepena of Kansas City, KS, Patricia Zacher of southern MO, Lisa Zacher of Florida and Margaret Grady of Wisconsin. 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Brothers and sisters Rhoda Thorpe, Elaine and her husband Don Anderson, Hope and her husband Bill McDonnell, James and Carole Sacks and Alice and Dave Diebolt. Aunts Rhoda K Sacks and Margaret Shrader and numberous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son Charles and her parents.
HOFFMAN, John C. 'Jack' Hoffman, 69, Nortonville, KS passed away Thursday, November 18, 2004 at Hickory Pointe Care Center, Oskaloosa, KS. Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 20, 2004 at the United Methodist Church in Nortonville, KS. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 AM Saturday, at the church. Inurnment at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington Disease Research and left in care of O'Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, KS.
Mr. Hoffman was born May 22, 1935 in Nortonville, KS the son of William and Hazel (McCoy) Hoffman. Jack attended grade school and high school at Nortonville, KS and continued to Barber College in Kansas City, Kansas. He was a school board member for JCN #339, he served on the Nortonville City Council for 8 years. Jack was a Boy Scout of America Leader. He was a lifetime member of the Nortonville Masonic Lodge and a lifetime member of the Lions Club. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nortonville, KS. He enjoyed hunting, water skiing at the lake and was an avid sports fan.
Jack married Beverly Bomhoff on August 22, 1954 in Valley Falls, KS. She survives him of the home.
Additional survivors include his sons Marty Hoffman and his wife Shila of Crawley, TX; Mark Hoffman and his fiance' Missy of Nortonville, KS and Philip Hoffman and his wife Mary of Nortonville, KS. 6 grandchildren Meridith Hoffman, Joshua and his wife LeAnn Hoffman, Brian, Gina, Blake and Haley Hoffman. Great grandson Braylon Hoffman. Brothers Mac Hoffman, Effingham, KS; sisters Dorothy Jo Hagen, Richardson, TX and Rosemary Cummings, West Des Moines, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by a daughter Dawn Michelle Hoffman in 1955; brother Billy Hoffman; and his parents.
BRENTANO, Judith K. Brentano, 59 years old, of Lancaster, Kansas, died Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at her home in Lancaster, KS.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Friday, November 19, 2004 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Purcell, KS with Fr. Ben Tremmel and Fr. Mariand Mendem, celebrants. Burial will be in St. Benedict's Church Cemetery in Bendena, KS. An evening prayer service will be held Thursday at 7:00 pm at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison with visitation to follow until 8:30 pm. Mrs. Brentano was born September 23, 1945 in Horton, KS, the daughter of Bernard J. 'Mike' and Kathleen (Darst) Pauly. She graduated from Everest High School. She started working in banking at the Exchange National Bank in Atchison in 1963 before changing to City National Bank in Atchison where she worked from 1965 to 1992, primarily as a teller. She was a member of St. Ann's Church in Effingham, enjoyed traveling and was a fan of many sports.
Judith and John Brentano were married November 11, 1967 at St. Mary's Church in Purcell, KS. John survives of the home in Lancaster.
Additional survivors include one daughter, Traci Brentano of Cypress, TX; one son, Jeffrey Brentano of Atchison, KS; her mother, Kathleen Pauly of Purcell, KS; one brother, Michael D. Pauly of Topeka, KS.
Judith was preceded in death by her father in 1979.
WISDOM,CLINTON LEE, Sgt. 1st Class Clinton Lee Wisdom, 39, Atchison, Kan., was killed Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, while on active duty with Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Kansas Army National Guard, during an attack on a U.S. convoy west of Baghdad, Iraq.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at the First Christian Church, 7th and Santa Fe, Atchison, Kan. The Rev. Lee Hendon, Chaplain Otha Kelley and Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Larry Parrish will be officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, South of St. Joseph, MO., with full military honors under the auspices of the United States Army. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:30 PM on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at the First Christian Church in Atchison. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Children's Education Fund. Clinton was born on Aug. 17, 1965, in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of Quentin and Diane (Jordan) Wisdom. He graduated from Benton High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 21, 1983. He attended Basic and Advanced Infantry Training in 1983. He transferred to the Reserves and then to the Kansas Army National Guard. On Dec. 18, 2003, Sgt. 1st Class Wisdom was ordered to active duty, to serve with Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He filled many roles and duties ranging from Ammunition Specialist to Fire Direction Computer Operator. Sgt. 1st Class Wisdom had also served in Grenada and the Gulf War. He had received many awards including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 'M' Device, NCO Professional Development Ribbon with numeral '2', Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Because of his actions he was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He had worked for the Atchison Casting & Intercontinental Corporation, of Kansas City, Mo. Sgt. 1st Class Wisdom attended the First Christian Church, Atchison, Kan., and enjoyed fishing.
He was married to Janet Thompson, on May 1, 1999; in Atchison, Kan. Mrs. Wisdom survives of the home. Additional survivors include a daughter, Anna Wisdom, Kansas City, Mo., a step-daughter, Kara Oatney, St. Joseph, Mo., a step-son, Zachary McDonell, of the home, his parents, Quentin and Diane Wisdom, St. Joseph, Mo., a sister, Lisa Wisdom Strayer, St. Joseph, Mo., and a step-son from a previous marriage, Monroe Rose, St. Joseph, Mo. A brother, Casey Garold Wisdom, paternal grandparents, Milo and Betty Wisdom, maternal grandmother, Norma L. Owens, maternal grandfather, Hubert Lee Jordan, and paternal great grandparents, Lee and Marjorie Jordan preceded him in death.

Joan K. Cloves was born on December 31, 1945 in Atchison, KS., the daughter of Malcolm and Barbara (Langworthy) Cloves. She graduated from Atchison High School and then received certified nurses aid training. She worked as a C.N.A. and then as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) at the Atchison Hospital for 16 years. She also owned and operated her own house cleaning service called Clean Sweep for many years. Joan also worked for over 10 years in housekeeping at Benedictine College, and as a P.T.A. at Senior Village for 2 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Atchison, and she enjoyed fishing, swimming, and especially her grandchildren.
She was married to Jimmy Smith on January 4, 1964 in Atchison, KS. Mr. Smith survives of the home. Additional survivors include two daughters; Kimberly and her husband Carl Surritt, Atchison, KS., and Kelly and her husband, Randy Fitkin, all of Atchison, KS., two brothers, Robert Cloves, Atchison, KS. and Dean Cloves, Overland Park, KS., two half- brothers, Donny Smith, Texas, and Marvin Cloves, St. Simon, GA, and six grandchildren. Her parents, one brother, and one half-sister preceded her in death.
HUTCHINSON Tella A. Hutchinson, 89 years old of Easton, MD, formerly of Atchison, Ks. died Friday, November 5, 2004 after a short illness.

Tella A Hinshaw was born on January 8, 1915 in Bennington, KS., the daughter of late Dr. L.M. and Cynthia Pearle (Alvord) Hinshaw. She had attended Kansas University and was a member of the Phi Beta sorority. She was member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Atchison, KS.
Tella was married to Donald C. Hutchinson in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1965. She lived for over 50 years in Atchison, KS. and has resided in Easton, MD. For the past three years. Survivors include a son, Curt Hutchinson, Oxford, MD and a daughter, Cynthia Hutchinson, Denver, CO., two grandchildren, Curt Hutchinson,III, Trappe, MD., and Jennifer Merer, Denver, CO., and four great grandchildren, Taylor, Brett, Curt Hutchinson,IV, and Emma Merer.
LONG, Anna Lorene Long, 73, Atchison, KS passed away November 1, 2004 at Medicalodge of Atchison.

Mrs. Long was born March 14, 1931 in Neosho, MO the daughter of William and Sarah Melinda 'Linnie' (Moore) Carterman. She attended Midway Schools in Missouri. She was a past member of Carol Baptist Church, and she worked for Hudson Oil Company and later Fisca Oil. She enjoyed gardening and loved she her family.
She married Bobby Long on March 14, 1950. He preceded her in death on December 27, 1982. She is also preceded in death by 2 sons David Leroy and Jerry E. Long. Brothers Burley, BJ and Loren Carterman, sisters Goldie Clouse and Elzie Carterman and her parents.
Survivors include her son Wayne Long of Leavenworth; and brother Troy Carterman of Granby, MO and a host of other family.

Kathryn B. Chapman was born on October 23, 1918 in Atchison, KS., the daughter of Wiley and Laura (Freeman) Chapman. She attended Sunnyside grade school and did sewing for Saunders MFG for over 20 years. She was a member of the Willing Workers Club, Atchison, and enjoyed fishing, sewing and making quilts for family and friends.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Charles and Mary Christian, Atchison, KS., two daughters, Bertha and her husband Terry McKinney, Atchison, and Opal and her husband LeRoy Jamvold, Troy, KS., a sister; Mrs. Erma Ellyson, El Paso, TX.,, ten grandchildren, and eighteen great grandchildren. Her parents, two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.
COLBY, Walter A. Colby, 45, Everest, KS died Saturday, October 23, 2004 in an auto accident 3 miles south of Effingham.

Mr. Colby was born October 3, 1959 in Bucksport, Maine, the son of Russell and Barbara (Dunham) Colby. He attended school in Groveland, FL and moved to the Everest area in 1985. He had worked for Mo-Kan Concrete and was currently employed with Meiers Concrete. Walter enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and karaoke.
Mr. Colby was preceded in death by his father Russell Colby, Sr. in 1998 and an infant brother Milford.

Virginia Ruth Alban was born March 3, 1919 in Winifred, KS, the daughter of Charles and Lillian (Trial) Alban. She graduated from Huron High School in Huron, KS. Virginia was a homemaker and member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lancaster, KS and an active member of church and community circles. She enjoyed reading; quilt making; all sports, especially baseball; and apple pie.
Virginia and Charles D. Dorssom were married on March 18, 1938 in Syracuse, NE. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Charles, Paul and Wayne Alban; one sister, Mary Hudson; and one grandson, Steven Dorssom.
She is survived by five sons and their spouses, Harold and LouAnn Dorssom of Marysville, KS, Robert and Floretta Dorssom of Lancaster, David and Dyna Dorssom of Warrensburg, MO, Steven and Joyce Dorssom of Shawnee, KS and James and Martha Dorssom of Lecompton, KS; one daughter, Mary Dorssom of Lancaster; one brother, Bob Alban of Springfield, OR; eighteen grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren.
McBRATNEY, Arthur L. McBratney, 99 years old, of Atchison, KS. died Wednesday, Oct. 20th, 2004 at the Atchison Hospital.

Mr. McBratney was born on October 8, 1905 in Centralia, KS., the son of Edwin and Rosa Nell (Cox) McBratney. He started school in Centralia, KS. before moving to Atchison in 1914. He attended Washington grade school, graduated from Ingalls High School, Atchison, and attended Emporia College for one year. He went to play semi-pro basketball in Chicago for a short time. Mr. McBratney had worked in several different places during his long life; they include Atchison Leather Products, the former L.F.M. Foundry, Kottman Upholstery, and Blish-Mize. Mr. McBratney worked for many years at Blish-Mize as a shipping clerk, and supervisor of the gunroom. He retired in 1975. Mr. McBratney was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church, had served in the National Guard, was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 91, St. Mark's Lutheran Church for many years, and Refereed football games. He enjoyed bowling, was a member of the Men's Bowling Association. He enjoyed softball, baseball, fishing, and especially gardening, raising flowers and woodworking.
Mr. McBratney was married to Hazel Bock on December 7, 1929 in Lakevilla, ILL., She preceded him in death on January 1, 1997. His parents, a son Edwin McBratney,(11-2-1996), brother Frank McBratney, (1997) and a sister, Ruth Smith also preceded him in death.
Survivors include; two daughters; Mrs. Joan Grieco, Houston, TX., and Mrs. Rae Alexander, Atchison, KS., twelve grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
ROBINSON, Thelma J. Robinson, 77, Atchison, KS passed away Monday, October 18, 2004 at Atchison Hospital following a battle with cancer.

Mrs. Robinson was born June 13, 1927 in Sidney, Nebraska, the daughter of Edwin Elmer and Helen Mae (Willis) Hoisapple. She attended the Atchison Schools. She was a homemaker and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Atchison. She enjoyed playing Bingo, helping with monthly lunches at Santa Fe Place Apts., and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid watcher of TV Soaps.
She married Floyd L. Robinson on December 17, 1955 at the United Methodist Church, Atchison. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister Bea Friday and Dorthy Bussell.
She is survived by her sons Daryl and his wife Sherri Hoisapple of Bellevue, NE; and Floyd and his wife Belinda Robinson of Atchison. Daughters Gail and her husband Mike Purcell of Atchison and Susan Mae and her husband Dennis Draper of Atchison. Nine grandchildren whom she adored, Jason Purcell, Jodi Purcell, Joanie Sinclair, Jennie Fuhrman, Miranda Robinson, Kayla Brummer, Nichole Brummer, Eric Hoisapple and Kelly Hoisapple.
LAURIE, John 'Jack' Laurie, III, 55 years old, of Atchison, KS., died as a result of an automobile accident on I-29, seven miles south of Mound City, MO. on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004.

John 'Jack' Laurie, III was born on June 21, 1949 in Atchison, Ks. the son of John and Lois (Wood) Laurie, Jr. He attended the Washington grade school, graduated from Atchison High School, where he played football,basketball, and golf. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a degree in Physical & Recreational Education. Mr. Laurie worked as a salesman, and then as Regional Sales Manager for the Blish-Mize Company for over 32 years. He had just recently retired this year. Mr. Laurie was a member and served on the Board of Directors of the Bellevue County Club, Atchison, was a member of the Sunflower Hills County Club, Bonner Springs, KS.. He was a member of the Lighting Strike & Electric Shock Survivors International, Inc, after being struck by lighting at his home seven years ago. He was a member of the Reynolds Coffee Club, the Raven Tailgaters Club, was an avid Benedictine Raven Football Fan, and a member of the American Association of Alpaca Breeders. Mr. Laurie was an avid golfer, having won many golfing awards, enjoyed hunting, and had started a new career of being an Alpaca rancher. He loved working his Labrador retriever, Hummer who was also killed in the automobile accident.
Jack was married to Courtney Mize on July 31, 1971 at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Atchison, KS. Courtney survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Jack Laurie, Jr, Atchison KS., a daughter, Katie Laurie, Denver, CO., his father, John Laurie, Jr., Atchison, a brother, Lance Laurie, Atchison, KS., a sister, Lynne Laurie Gates, Beloit, KS., and several nieces and nephews. His mother, and one sister preceded him in death.
REID, Evelyn M. Reid, 91, Atchison, KS passed away Saturday, October 9, 2004 at Medicalodge of Atchison.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS with the Rev. Lee Hendon officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 PM Monday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Atchison, Alzheimer's Association or The First Christian Church and left in care of the funeral home.
Mrs. Reid was born September 15, 1913 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky the daughter of Jess and Annie (Warren) Mahan. She was a 4-H Leader, member of the Good Intent Women's Club and Shannon Hill Community Club. She was a member of Wildlife Federation. She enjoyed her birds, gardening and she loved music.
She married Roy A. Reid on May 22, 1932 in Atchison, KS., he preceded her in death on February 2, 2003. She is also preceded in death by her son Paul Reid in 1979, 3 brothers and her parents. Survivors include her son David Reid and his wife Lois of Good Intent Community; daughter June Bullock and her husband Rev. Joseph Bullock of Good Intent Community. 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; brother Larry Epperson of Atchison and several nieces and nephews.
BESETTE, Ruth E. Besette, 85 years old, of Atchison, Kansas died Friday, October 8, 2004 at the Atchison Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, October 13th, 2004 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Raymond C. Hartjen, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, Ks. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 PM on Wednesday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Assoc. or the donor's choice.
Ruth E. Trainer was born on November 5, 1918 in Atchison, KS. the daughter of Harve and Bessie (Jenkins) Trainer. She was a housewife and homemaker for most of her life. She and her husband built, owned and operated the former Melrose Motel, Atchison for several years. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Besette enjoyed painting, cooking, reading, making afghans, raising plants and flowers. She especially enjoyed her family and grandchildren.
Ruth was married to Melvin E. Besette, Sr. on May 4, 1935 in Atchison, KS. Mr. Besette survives of the home. Additional survivors include two daughter's; Roberta Wolters and her husband Philip, Atchison, KS., and Barbara Besette and Steve Bartel, Pekin, ILL, nine grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Her parents, a son, Melvin Besette, Jr., 1999, one brother and one sister also preceded her in death.
