SHELL, Helen L. Shell, 92 years old, of Fallbrook, CA., died Tuesday, May 3, 2005 in Fallbrook, CA.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 6th, 2005 at the Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary, 333 N. Vine St., Fallbrook, CA., Graveside services and burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 11th, 2005 at the Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. with Rev. Jeff Cochran officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association of San Diego, CA. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Mrs. Shell was born on April 21, 1913 in Everest, KS .Mrs. Shell was a homemaker and Pharmacist's Assistant. Mrs. Shell was a member of the Cypress Twirlers Square Dance Club, and had volunteered for over 10 years at the La Paloma Community Hospital in Orange County.
Survivors include; two sons and their wife's, Howard W. and Ingerlise Shell, and Lewis K. and Darla M. Shell, all of Fallbrook, CA., five grandchildren, John, Glenn, Lyle, Mark and Kari, and three great grandchildren
DYER, James W. ' Jay' Dyer, 94 years old, of Aurora, CO., formerly of Atchison, KS. died Thursday, May 5, 2005 at the Shalom Park, Aurora, CO.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 9th, 2005 at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Denver, CO. Graveside services and burial will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 11th, 2005 at the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until time of services on Wednesday, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. John's Lutheran School, Denver, CO.
James W. Dyer was born on April 29, 1911 in the Sugar Creek community near Rushville, MO. the son of Tilford D. and Stella C. (Lawrence) Dyer. Jay moved to Atchison in 1928. He attended the Atchison Business College and St. Benedict's College. He later attended the Williams Institute of Mortuary Science, in Kansas City, KS. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Dyer worked for three years as an assistant secretary to the late G.C. Von Nieda, Manager of the YMCA. Mr. Dyer joined the Sawin-Douglas Funeral Home on Aug. 17, 1931. He purchased the funeral home business in 1945. After forty years in funeral service, Jay retired in 1971 and turned the business over to his brother, Harold Dyer. Mr. Dyer was active many years in civic, club and community services. He was a member of the Heather Gardens Optimist Club, was a founder and first president of the Atchison Fellowship Club, he was a former member of the Atchison Kiwanis Club, Past-president of the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce, past-president of the Atchison YMCA. He served many years as a member and former Chairman of the Salvation Army Board of Directors. Jay served as chairman for the United Way Drive, and president of the United Way Board of Directors. He was a former Deacon, Trustee and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Atchison, KS., a former member of the Elks Lodge, member of all branches of the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Dyer was active in politics, having attended three National Democratic Conventions, serving as Delegate at the Chicago Convention in 1968. Mr. Dyer served as Commissioner of the National Baseball Congress. He served three years as President of the Kansas All-Sports Hall of Fame. Jay was a licensed Funeral Director in Kansas and Missouri. He was a life member of the American Legion.
Jay was married to Florence Thaden on June 20, 1934 in Atchison, KS.. Mrs. Dyer preceded him in death on September 5, 1992. His parents, one daughter, Marie Dyer, six brothers, Irvin, Leonard, Harold, Leslie, Sam and Fred Dyer also preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, and her husband, Dorothy and Curt Jefferies, Denver, CO.,, a sister, Nell Winburn, LaMesa, CA., and two granddaughters, Sheila and Kathy.
HAVERKAMP, Verniss J. Haverkamp, 75, of Atchison, Ks. died Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at a hospital in, St. Joseph, Missouri.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, May 7th, 2005 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. The body will be cremated following the services and burial of the cremated remains will follow at a later date in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, May 6th, 2005 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:30 PM. Mr. Haverkamp was born on Feb. 7, 1930 near Seneca, KS., in Nemaha Country, the son of Clement L. and Catherine M. (Hoeffler) Haverkamp. Mr. Haverkamp worked as a automotive driver for the Atchison Youth Center for many years, and worked as plant operator for the water department for the City of Atchison. He retired in 1992.Mr. Haverkamp was a courier for the Atchison Daily Globe for 13 years. Mr. Haverkamp was Catholic, and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed his family, watching NASCAR racing.
He was married to Frances V. Bump on May 24, 1952 in Atchison, KS. Mrs. Haverkamp survives of the home in Atchison, KS. Additional survivor's include two sons;, Eldon L. Haverkamp, Atchison, and Francis R. and his wife Rose Ann Haverkamp, Atchison, KS., his daughter, Sharon Ann Haverkamp, Lawrence, KS., and five sister's; Mrs. Mildred Kelly, Effingham, KS., Lucy Weber, Kansas City, MO., Mary Lemke, Mooney Creek, KS., Evelyn Jambold, San Antonio, TX., and Gladys Carr, Topeka, KS., three grandchildren, and three step grandchildren. His parents, a brother, Albert Haverkamp, and two sisters; Betty Lou Haverkamp, and Alice Haverkamp all preceded him in death.
HONER, Jack Lee Honer, 73, Atchison, KS passed away Sunday, May 01, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital on the Plaza.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Doug Williams officiating. Burial at Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church or the Shriners Hospital.
Mr. Honer was born June 30, 1931 in Denton, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Nora Marie (Jenkins) Honer. He was a graduate of Denton High School. He was a member of the Horton National Guard from 1949 to 1959. Jack was employed with FP Gering for many years, which he was supervisor for numerous construction projects at Fort Leavenworth, Lansing and the canopies on the mall in Atchison. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rites. Member of the Abdullah Shrine in Kansas City. He coached youth baseball and basketball. Jack enjoyed woodworking in his shop and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchild.
Jack married Norma Jeane Hedrick on February 20, 1955 in St. Joseph, MO. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his sons Steve Honer and his wife Sherry of Tarpon Springs, FL; Ron Honer and his wife Marcia of Coppell, TX. Daughter Gail Rice and her husband Gordon of Overland Park, KS. 7 grandchildren Brad Honer, Matt Honer, Chris Rice, Neil Rice, Deanna Rice, Nicky Barry and Kyle Honer, Great grandson Dylan Barry. Brother Joseph A. Honer of Bella Vista, AR. Sisters Betty Delzeit of Horton, KS, Barbara Will of Topeka, and Rose Helmstetter of Denton, KS, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
GEORGE, Theodore Eugene George, 70, Rushville, MO passed away Friday, April 29, 2005 at Atchison Hospital.
No services are planned. The body has been cremated under the direction of Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Fund and left in care of the funeral home.
Mr. George was born September 11, 1934 in Atchison, KS the son of John and Myrul (Willis) George. He was a 1952 graduate of Atchison High School. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy serving as a Navy SEAL. He had previously worked for Atchison Leather Products in sales, and later as a truck driver for MGP (Midwest Grain Products.) Theodore was a lifetime member of V.F.W Post #1175. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
Mr. George married Alice Taylor on November 4, 1978. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his daughters Jamie Murphy of Virginia Beach, VA; Laura McCary of Gun Hill, TX and a son John Wayne George of Idaho. 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Sister Rose Marie Goody of Florida and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by a son and his parents.
JONES, Helen A. Jones, 95, Rushville, MO passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005 at Saxton Riverside Care Center in St. Joseph, MO.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, May 2, 2005 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS with the Rev. Wayne Smith, officiating. Burial at Sugar Creek Cemetery near Rushville, MO. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 PM Sunday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS and left in care of the funeral home.
Mrs. Jones was born March 27, 1910 in Rushville, MO the daughter of Emmett and Ida (Cash) Allison. She attended Rushville High School. She was a member of the First Christian Church and a member of the C.W.F. Lydia Group . Helen enjoyed gardening, cooking and visiting with family and friends. She loved being surrounded by her family.
Helen married Charles T. Jones on August 5, 1933 at Sugar Lake, he preceded her in death on January 9, 1994. She is also preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 4 brothers.
Survivors include her daughter Gayle Agee and her husband Alan of St. Joseph, MO. Grandchildren Sherri Ogle of Seattle, WA; Cyndie Jones and her husband Dave of St. Joseph, MO; and Curtis Paste and his wife Diane of Rushville, MO. 6 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
WISTUBA, Harry Edward Wistuba, 90, of Winchester, KS, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at the Jefferson County Geriatric Center in Winchester.
A Prayer Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, April 28, 2005 at the O'Trimble Funeral Home in Nortonville with Fr. Jon Hullinger, officiating. Burial will be in the Corpus Christi Church Cemetery, Mooney Creek Community, north of Winchester. A rosary will be recited at 9:45 AM, Thursday, just prior to the prayer service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Wistuba are suggested to St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Easton, KS.
Mr. Wistuba was born July 24, 1914 at Winchester, KS, the son of Carl Joseph and Mary Frances (Zelfer) Wistuba. He lived all of his life in the Winchester area where he farmed and raised livestock. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church of Easton, KS. He enjoyed caring for his family and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Theodore and Charles Wistuba.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Gragg of Topeka, KS; one brother, Raymond Wistuba of Valley Falls, KS; and many nieces and nephews.
GWALTNEY, Edith Louise Gwaltney, 87, Atchison, KS passes away Sunday, April 24, 2005 at Heartland Hospital, St. Joseph, MO.

Mrs. Gwaltney was born April 9, 1918 in Norton, KS the daughter of Noah and Besse Pearl (DuBois) Garrett. She attended Grade School and High School in Norton, KS. She was a US Navy Veteran serving from August 26, 1943 to July 5, 1946 and obtaining the rank of Chief Yeoman. She attended Lindenwood University in St. Charles and later attended Sarchon Hooley Secretarial School in Kansas City, MO. Edith had worked for Foster Lumber in Norton, KS, the Norton State Hospital for 10 years, the Reconstruction Finance Corp in Kansas City, MO for 5 years, the De-Tox Center in Topeka, KS. Edie also co-owned a retail business in Norton for over 20 years. She had served as a Brownie Scout Leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Girl Scout Leader and had sponsored ALA-TEEN for 3 years in Norton, KS. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Shepard Center, a member of Waves National, the American Legion, a lifetime member of V.F.W. and AL-ANON since 1967. Edith enjoyed collecting dolls and teddy bears and was an avid KU Fan 'God Bless Roy Williams'. She loved life and people and she never met a stranger.
She married Preston P. Gwaltney on April 16, 1946 at Virginia Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA. He preceded her in death in 1972. She is also preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Paul and Russell Garrett.
Survivors include her sons Herb Gwaltney and his wife Sabrina of Atchison, and Garrett Gwaltney and his wife Dee Dee of Leavenworth, KS. Great granddaughter Melina, great niece Hope Norris, 2 great nephews Mark Garrett of Parsons, KS and Kirk Garrett of New York City, NY.
SWINFORD, Charles Edward Swinford, 67 years old, of Bendena, KS., died Friday, April 22, 2005 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, April 26th, 2005 at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Bendena, KS. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery, Troy, KS. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 PM on Monday, April 25th, 2005 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, 800 Kansas Ave, Atchison, KS. The body will be moved to the church one hour prior to services on Tuesday. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. John's Lutheran Church, Bendena, KS., the Lung Association, or American Cancer Society.
Mr. Swinford was born on Oct. 22, 1937 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Charles E. and Alma V. (Bangert) Swinford. He graduated from Bendena High School, 1955 and Highland Community College, 1957. Mr. Swinford started his banking career at the Bendena State Bank. He joined the Exchange National Bank, Atchison on March 17, 1967, and has worked for 38 years. Mr. Swinford was the Senior Vice President at Exchange National Bank. Mr. Swinford also enjoyed farming on the family farm. He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, Bendena and had served on the church council. He was a former member of the Board of Education for Midway High School, a member of the Denton Masonic Lodge # 449, was a Director for Exchange National Bank, Director and Loan Committee Chairman for the First National Bank, Leavenworth, KS., Mr. Swinford was a past director for the Farmer's State Bank, Corning, KS., and the First State Bank, Goff, KS. He was a former member of the Highland Community College Foundaton. Mr. Swinford enjoyed bird hunting and his riding mules.
He was married to Becky Assel on July 14, 1962 in Kingston; MO. Mrs. Swinford survives of the home in Bendena. Additional survivors include his three sons; Charles 'Chuck' and his wife, Lauri Swinford, Easton, KS., Brian Swinford, Rogersville, MO., and Curt and his wife, Monica Swinford, Bonner Springs, KS. and five grandchildren. Mr. Swinford was preceded in death by his parents.
BARKER, Willetta Barker, 85 years old of Atchison, Ks. died Tuesday, April 20, 2005 at the Atchison Senior Village
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 23, 2005 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Sumner Cemetery, South of Atchison. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services Saturday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Willetta Gilliland was born on Jan. 26, 1920 in Atchison, the daughter of Miles A. and May (Martin) Gilliland. She attended schools in Atchison. Mrs. Barker was a housewife and homemaker. She enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, sewing, animals, antiques and attending auctions.
Willetta was married to Leonard Barker on Aug. 18, 1940 in Atchison, KS., Mr. Barker survives and lives at Senior Village. Additional survivors include a son; Leonard W. Barker, Grain Valley, MO., a daughter, Mrs. Willetta Louise Zacharias, Atchison, KS., six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Her parents, five brothers, and three sister's preceded her in death.
