Clevenger, Lucetta S. (Whitaker) Clevenger, 89 years old, of Winchester, KS., died Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at the Jefferson County Geriatric Center, Winchester, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 6, 2005 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello, IA with Rev. Dennis West officiating.. Burial will follow the services in the Edwards Cemetery; Oakville, IA The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services on Saturday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello, IA. Lucetta S. Whitaker was born on January 25, 1916 in rural Oakville, Iowa the daughter of Levi and Bessie (Whisler) Whitaker. She attended schools in Oakville, IA. She was married to Herbert H. Clevenger on June 11, 1938 in Keokuk, IA. Rev. Clevenger preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 2000. Mrs. Clevenger was a gracious minister's wife, loving mother, and dedicated spiritual example to those around her. She served in her role with a compassionate, sweet, spirit and stood at her husband's side as he ministered to churches in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Tennessee. She was a member of the Church of God Holiness. She enjoyed embroidery, gardening, and especially her family.
Survivors include a son, Herbert J. and his wife, Louise Clevenger, Lamar, CO., three daughters; Vera M. Horn, Bartlesville, OK., Donna L. and her husband, Joe Frazier, Rayville, MO., and Lois M. and her husband Kent Wheeler, Atchison, KS., a brother, Hilbert Whitaker, Oakville, IA., and a sister, Edna Whitaker, Oakville, IA, eight grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. A daughter, Pansy Lou Clevenger, her parents, a step-mother, Esther Whitaker, five brothers; Virgil, Johnny, Levi, Charlie and Alfred Whitaker, and one sister, Mary Peck Curtis, a grandson, D.J. Frazier, and one great grandson, Cody Smith also preceded her in death.
NICHOLS, Claire Nichols 99, Nortonville, KS passed away Friday, July 29, 2005 at Medicalodge of Atchison, KS.
Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at Nortonville Cemetery, Nortonville, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to the Farmington Christian Church and left in care of O'Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, KS.
Mrs. Nichols was born September 9, 1905 in Mound Valley, KS the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Englund) Worley. She was a 1924 graduate of Grenola High School. She was an insurance agent working with her husband for a number of years at Nichols Insurance in Nortonville. She was a member of the Farmington Christian Church and a member of the Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Flower Club, Home Welfare Club, Nicholonians and Unit in Nortonville. Claire enjoyed volunteering her time at Village Villa Nursing Home in Nortonville for a number of years providing music and games.
She married Fred H. Nichols on August 18, 1926. He preceded her in death on September 15, 1965. She is also preceded in death by a son Dale Nichols, daughter Lois Warner, grandson Brad Warner, brothers Raymond, and Herbert Worley and her parents.
Survivors include her daughters Margaret Nolting and her husband David of Bermuda Run, NC; and Ethel Park and her husband Jim of Ripley, WV. 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. Brothers Ellywn Worley and Paul Worley. Sisters Christine Evans and Mildred Lais.
MARGUERITE F. NELSON, Marguerite F. Nelson, 87, of Atchison, KS, formerly of Fargo, ND, died Thursday, July 28, 2005 at Atchison Senior Village in Atchison, KS.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at Elim Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Fargo, ND. Mrs. Nelson was born May 7, 1918 in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of Edward and Lydia (Page) Matzke. She graduated from Hamlin University in St. Paul, MN with a Bachelors degree in education. She worked as an executive secretary in the Agriculture Education Department of North Dakota State University, Fargo. She was a board member of the Elim Lutheran Church, Ladies Circle and Altar Guild of the church, Swedish Society and Volk Sport, all of Fargo. She enjoyed gardening and visiting with friends.
Marguerite and LaVerne Nelson were married on August 31, 1949 in St. Paul, MN. He preceded her in death in March 1993.
Survivors include two daughters, Marcene Selberg and her husband, Jack, of Atchison, KS, Moira Jackson and her husband, Paul, of Hyattsville, MD; one sister, Connie Danielzuk of St. Paul, MN; four grandchildren and one great grandson.
FATHER JOHN M. STITZ, Fr. John Michael Stitz, 78, of Lansing, KS, former Parish Priest of Corpus Christi Church, Mooney Creek Community, Winchester, KS, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Monday, August 1, 2005, at Annunciation Chapel, University of Saint Mary, Leavenworth, KS. Burial will be at 2:00 PM in the Corpus Christi Church Cemetery, Mooney Creek, KS, north of Winchester, KS. Rite of Reception will be Sunday, July 31, 2005 at 4:00 PM at Annunciation Chapel, with visitation following until 8:00 PM. A prayer vigil will be held at 6:00 pm. Fr. Stitz was born April 8, 1927 in Baileyville, KS, the son of John A. and Elizabeth (Engelken) Stitz. He attended Baileyville Schools, graduated from St. Benedict College in Atchison, KS and Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, MO. Fr. John was ordained on February 28, 1953. He received his MA and PhD in American Studies from Kansas University in Lawrence. Fr. John served parishes at Holy Name in Topeka from 1953-54, St. Gregory's in Marysville from 1954-55, Sacred Heart in Kansas City, KS from 1955-57, Sacred Heart in Sabetha, KS from 1957-63, Sacred Heart in Tonganoxie, KS from 1963-79 and Corpus Christi in Mooney Creek from 1979 until his retirement in 1995. He served as Chaplain at St. Mary College in Leavenworth for 20 years. He was director of Papal Volunteers and Kansas Volunteers, director of Human Development, Rural Life, and Catholic Relief Services in the Archdiocese of Kansas City, KS.
Survivors include four sisters, Marcella Montgomery of Topeka, KS, Alma Mastrogiovanni, Eugene, OR, Bernita Campo of Bothell, WA, Bernice Roth, Emmett, KS. and many nieces and nephews.
Fr. John was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Dorothy Stitz and Eleanor Vondenkamp, and brothers Ed and Raymond Stitz.
FERRIS, Paul Ferris, Jr. 70, Effingham, KS passed away Sunday, July 24, 2005 at Heartland Hospital, St. Joseph, MO.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, July 28, 2005 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 PM Wednesday with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Ferris was born April 11, 1935 in St. Joseph, MO the son of Paul and Sylvia (Higbe) Ferris. He retired at an early age from Rockwell after 22 years. He farmed for a number of years on the family farm between Muscotah and Effingham, KS, and was later self-employed cutting and selling hedge post. He was a member of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping and spending time with the family.
He married Carol Martin on July 3, 1954 in Hiawatha, KS. They recently celebrated their 51st wedding Anniversary, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include his son John P. Ferris and his wife Pam of Eudora, KS; daughters Karen Gerhardt and her husband Charles of Rogers, AR; Janet Hamill of Atchison, KS; and Dana Hare and her husband Walter of Atchison, KS. 7 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 3 great granddaughters. Brothers Tom Ferris, Charles Ferris, Bill Ferris and Herbie Ferris. A sister Mary Lou Felton.
He was preceded in death by a grandson Stephen Paul. Brothers James, Leroy and David Ferris and his parents.
EVERETT, Thomas L. Everett, 62 years old, of Atchison, KS., died Thursday, July 21, 2005 at his apartment in Mall Towers.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 25th, 2005 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM on Monday until time of service at the funeral home. The body has been cremated and interment of the cremated remains will be in the Corpus Christi Cemetery, Mooney Creek, KS. Thomas L. Everett was born on Sept. 20, 1942 in Winchester, KS., the son of Milo 'Mike' and Viola 'Jerry' (Snelson) Everett. Mr. Everett attended schools in Effingham, KS., he was a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Everett had worked as a laborer at the Saunders Mfg., Atchison for several years. He was a member of the Fleming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post #6, Atchison, KS.. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, crafts, and visiting with family.
Survivors include a son, John T. Everett, Kearney, MO., three daughters; Angela Everett. Kansas City, Mo., Lisa Everett, St. Joseph, MO., and Dawn Everett, Kansas City, MO., four brothers; Jack 'Butch' Everett, Rushville, MO., Pat Everett, Denver, CO., Mike Everett, Hilo, Hawaii, Gary Everett, Minneapolis, MN., a sister, Mrs. Candace 'Candy' Winterscheidt, Aurora, CO., and eleven grandchildren. His parents and one brother, Paul Pete Everett, preceded him in death.
HARNISH, Dorothy May Harnish, 95 years old of Winchester, KS. died Wednesday, July 20th, 2005 at the Atchison Hospital, Atchison, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 25th, 2005 at the O'Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, KS. Burial will follow in the Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery, Winchester, KS. Dorothy was born on August 23, 1909 in Pomona, KS., the daughter of John S. and Metta E. ( Harrison ) Thomas. She graduated from Effingham High School and attended teachers college. Mrs. Harnish worked as a teacher for rural Atchison County Schools, and Winchester Grade School for 10 years. She was a member of the Winchester Christian Church, a Sunday school teacher and pastel artists. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, word puzzles, and collecting poems.
She was married to Paul Harnish on June 6, 1937 in Atchison; KS. Mr. Harnish preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1999. Her parents, a brother Sid Thomas and sister, Elizabeth Thomas also preceded her in death. Survivors include a son; John A. and his wife Bev Harnish, San Diego, CA., two daughters, Elizabeth and her husband Robert Noll, Winchester, KS., and Edith Zunker, Sioux City, IA., a sister-in-law, Francis Harnish, Leavenworth, KS., eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
BARNES, Robert J. Barnes, 68, Atchison, KS passed away Saturday, July 16, 2005 at Atchison Hospital.
Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Friday, July 22, 2005 at Leavenworth National Cemetery. The body has been cremated under direction of Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home.
Mr. Barnes was born August 1, 1936 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Jim and Delores (Sidle) Barnes. He graduated from San Fernando Valley High School. He was a U.S. Airforce veteran serving from 1954 to 1957. He moved to the Atchison area in the 1970's . He was a contract residential painter throughout the Kansas City area for a number of years. Robert enjoyed fishing.
Mr. Barnes married Jessie Pinkman on December 18, 1975, and raised 2 step children Misty and Robert Meek, they divorced.
He is survived by his sister Bonnie Villa and her husband Robin of Billings, Montana. Numerous nieces and nephews and special friend Betty Jean Minor of Atchison, KS.
LENTZ, James Albert Lentz, 71, Leavenworth, formerly of Winchester, KS passed away Sunday, July 17, 2005 at Medicalodge of Leavenworth.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at the New Testament Christian Church, Winchester, KS. Burial at Nortonville Cemetery, Nortonville, KS. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 PM Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation and left in care of O'Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, KS.
Mr. Lentz was born July 18, 1933 in Beverly, MO. the son of James Adam and Sadie Mae (Norris) Lentz. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He retired from GNB Battery in Leavenworth after 37 years. He was a member of the New Testament Christian Church in Leavenworth where he was Deacon and church Elder. James enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening and woodcarving, he made numerous walking canes from tree limbs. He especially loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He married Janet Irene Moberly on April 1, 1956 in Leavenworth, KS. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include James Lentz and his wife Sue of Bashor, KS; Richard Lentz of Winchester, KS and Keith Lentz of Winchester, KS. Daughters Donieta McVay and her husband Rick of Leavenworth, KS and Becky Belveal and her husband Steve of Nortonville, KS. 20 grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Brother Calvin Lentz of Farley, MO, sisters Agatha Tinder of Leavenworth, KS; Betty Lou Lentz of Kansas City, MO and Doris Price of Medford, OR.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a half brother John Henry Andrews, half sister Beulah Peterson and a grandchild.
McGREGOR, Herschel V. McGregor, 90 Plattsburg, MO formerly of Atchison, KS passed away Monday, July 11, 2005 at Oakridge Nursing Home in Plattsburg, MO.

Mr. McGregor was born January 7, 1915 in Troy, KS the son of Robert and Minnie (Abbott) McGregor. Herschel worked for numerous garages in Atchison including Cadillac Garage-Miller Chevrolet and Mo-Kan Nash Garage. After retirement he enjoyed fishing.
He married Dorine Dittemore on April 15, 1935 in Troy, KS. She preceded him in death on December 15, 1988. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother William McGregor.
Survivors include his sons Herschel H. McGregor and his wife Barbara of St. Joseph, MO; Lee McGregor and his wife Carol of Lathrop, MO; Don McGregor of Atchison, KS and an adopted son Jason Woods-McGregor of Kansas City, MO. 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.
HOOD, Doris Irene Hood, 88 years old, formerly of Atchison, KS., died Monday, July 11, 2005 in Denver, CO.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 16th, 2005 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Doris Irene Hand was born on April 12, 1917 in Ottumwa, Iowa and grew up in Atchison, where she met her husband Dr. LeRoy Hood. Dr. Hood preceded her in death on April 30, 1999. Mrs. Hood had live in Kansas, Minnesota and Florida before moving to Denver, CO. in 1993. She was a past president of the Greater Minneapolis Church Women United, a member of the PEO and an active volunteer in the Meals on Wheels program.
Survivors include a daughter; Carolyn Salter, Denver, Co., a son, Leroy Hood, Raleigh, NC, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Fern Esther Rickard was born on June 11, 1914 in Hutchinson, KS. the daughter of William and Lillian M. (Schlegel) Rickard. She attended schools in Hutchinson. Fern worked for the Oklahoma Tire & Supply Store, Hutchinson before moving to Atchison, KS. She did private babysitting, before working as a nurse's aide both at Cray Senior Manor and Atchison Medicalodge. Mrs. Toews for many years would work at the Dairy Barn, at the Kansas State Fair, in Hutchinson, KS. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of the Morning Break Women's group of the church. She attended the Shepherd's Center, Atchison, and was an avid reader, enjoyed crocheting Afghans, and was a world traveler.
She was married to Abraham Gerhard Willems Toews on May 1, 1941 in Eldorado, KS., Mr. Toews preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 1972. Survivors include; two sons; Steven G. and his wife, Helga Toews, Athens, Alabama, and Reagen S. and his wife, Katie Toews, Atchison, KS., two daughters; Kathleen L. and her husband Don Swanson, St. Paul, MN., and Christy M. Toews, Atchison, KS., a sister, Maxine Setzer, Hutchinson, KS, eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
LOHMAN, Leroy A. Lohman, 89, Atchison, KS passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at his home.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, July 1, 2005 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Hollingsworth officiating. Burial at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery near Potter, KS. Mr. Lohman was born October 1, 1915 in Easton, KS the son of August Martin and Flora Elizabeth (Winkler) Lohman. He graduated in 1933 from Potter High School and was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in WWII. He worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a foreman until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post #6 and received his 50 year member certificate in 1996. He loved taking his coon dog hunting.
Leroy married Mary Lorene Wilson on January 29, 1989 at the First Baptist Church in Atchison. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his stepsons Daryl Wilson and his wife Rosy of Seymour, IN, and Richard Wilson and his wife Donna of Atchison. A stepdaughter Caroline Garton and her husband Bob of Atchison, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Brothers August Lohman and his wife Agnes; Lester Lohman and his wife Margie, and a sister Ruth Sellers and her husband Cliff.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Elmer Lohman, Harold Lohman and Ernest Lohman. A sister Pearl Lewis and his parents.
