VIRGINIA BEACH - Infant Kyone Sincere Johnson, of the 1000 block of Old Clubhouse Road, died Sept. 12, 2007, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Survivors include her parents, Elroy W. Johnson III and Kacella Bass, both of Virginia Beach; grandparents, Leroy and Sharon Young of Norfolk; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by grandparents, Miles and Christinia White.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Roosevelt Memorial Park with Pastor Janece Bell officiating. A viewing will be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Monday in Carlos A. Bessie Mae Wilder
ARLINGTON - On Thursday evening, Sept. 13, 2007, Bessie Mae Wilder departed this life at home surrounded by her family. She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Sandra G. Humphrey of Virginia Beach and Aaronia H. Jones of Alexandria, Va.; one son-in-law, John M. Jones of Alexandria; three grandchildren, Christie J. Aden, Jamal M. Jones, both of Arlington, Va., and Cassandra G. Humphrey of Virginia Beach; along with extended family and friends around the world.
Friends will be received Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Mount Olive Baptist Church beginning at 6 p.m. with a funeral beginning at 7 p.m. The Rev. James E. Victor Jr., pastor. Anna M. Clemente
VIRGINIA BEACH - Anna Maria Clemente, 70, passed away Sept. 14, 2007, at Sentara Bayside Hospital. Mrs. Clemente was born in Naples, Italy the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Amalia Invorio. She was predeceased by her husband, Fillippo Clemente. She was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. She was the founder of the Gold Comb Beauty Salon.
She is survived by one daughter, Diana Watts and her husband Garland of Virginia Beach; two sons, George J. Smith and his wife Joyce of Jacksonville, Fla., and Robert S. Smith and his wife Kimberly of Newport News; sister, Wilma Invorio of Naples, Italy; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462. The family will receive friends today from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road Virginia Beach. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. M. Helen Warner
VIRGINIA BEACH - Madeline Helen Warner passed away following a short illness Sept. 14, 2007. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 19, 1922, the daughter of James H. and Margaret V. Murphy, and had been a resident of Virginia Beach since 1965.
Mrs. Warner served as a registered nurse (lieutenant junior grade) in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Norfolk General Hospital as both a staff nurse and head nurse after 17 years. She was a devoted member of the Catholic Ladies Altar Guild at the Amphibious Base Chapel as well as a member of the Retired Officers Wives Society of Tidewater.
She is the widow of Cmdr. John D. Warner (U.S. Navy retired) and is survived by five loving children, John D. Warner Jr. and wife Mary of Yorktown, Mary Kay Moore, Pamela M. Warner, Paul W. Warner and Thomas A. Warner, all of Virginia Beach.
Mrs. Warner is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Holsclaw of Jacksonville, Fla. as well as six grandchildren, Richard, John Patrick, and Daniel Moore, and also Paul Jr., Ryan and Tyler Warner. Another sister, Margaret Martin of Philadelphia, preceded her in death.
A viewing will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, at 7 p.m. today. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel at 10 a.m. Tuesday followed by a reception provided by the Altar Guild. Burial will then follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk.
Helen provided a devoted, caring and loving life for her husband Jack and her children. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

FAIRFAX - Jestine Adams Pendergrass, 72, formerly of Church St., Norfolk, died Sept. 10, 2007.
She is survived by her spouse, James Horace Pendergrass; three daughters, Natalie Gravette, Jessica Jones (Ira) and Robin Pendergrass; two sons, Donell Adams (Eve) and Chris Pendergrass; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one nephew, James Andrews; other relatives, in-laws and friends.

Monica Y. Freeman
CHESAPEAKE - Monica Y. Freeman, 59, of the 300 block of Appaloosa Trail, died Sept. 13, 2007, in Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a collector for seven years for Bank of America. Mrs. Freeman was a member, first lady and ordained Eldress of Words of Freedom Family Worship Center, Chesapeake.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Robert J. Freeman; three daughters, Letesha Freeman of Virginia Beach, Latonya Freeman Griffith of Suffolk and Crystal Freeman of Chesapeake; two sons, John A. Moore Jr. of Chesapeake and Darwin O. Moore of New Jersey; her mother, Delores Lewis of Brooklyn; eight grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Garden of Prayer Worship Center, Norfolk, by Bishop L.E. Willis Sr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon today. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

NORFOLK - Eunice Burnette Bland, 83, of the 7900 block of Carlton St., passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at a local hospital. A native of Norfolk, Mrs. Bland was a retired bookkeeper with Colonial Stores.
She was the widow of William H. Bland Sr. and is survived by a daughter, Vicki Shelhorse of Deltona, Fla.; a son, William Howard Bland Jr. and wife Lorraine of Norfolk; 10 grandchildren, Tracie L. and Casie L. Bland, Jeff, Ricky, Gary, Shawn, Chris and Kevin Shelhorse, Vicky Spinella and Courtney Hamilton; and several great-grandchildren.

NORFOLK - Samuel “Sammy” Rouse Jr., 79, departed his life Sept. 13, 2007.
He is survived by two daughters, Claudine D. Davis of Norfolk and Pamela D. Saunders (Barry) of Chesapeake; a grandson, Jayson Saunders; three sisters, Gladys M. West, Dolores Williams and Betty Jean Rouse, all of North Carolina; and five stepchildren, Ishmael Davis, Inzoria Bowe, Brenda Lewis, Osceolia Craddock of Norfolk and Koshinier Williams of Washington, D.C.

Elizabeth St. Jacques
NORFOLK - Elizabeth Cherry St. Jacques, 76, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at her residence.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Francis E. St. Jacques. She is survived by her daughter, Susan M. Chaney and husband Michael of Hertford, N.C.; a son, Anthony E. St. Jacques and wife Laurie of Eugene, Ore.; two grandchildren, Andrea C. Owens and husband Brad of Hertford and Cameron E. Chaney of Hertford; two sisters, Evelyn Sarro and Dorothy Hufton of Chesapeake; a brother, Tully W. Cherry and his wife Gloria of Chesapeake; a sister-in-law, Pat Cherry Ripley of Grandy, N.C. She also leaves behind an extended family of numerous nieces and nephews and dear friends.
She was born Jan. 15, 1931 in Norfolk County to the late Annie M. and Clyde W. Cherry. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Waverly L. Cherry, James E. Cherry and Clyde W. Cherry Jr. and her sister, Merriam Swindler.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many who will miss her. We mourn our loss but take comfort in the knowledge that she awaits us in a better place.
She recently retired as a secretary with Atlantic Lighting for 41 years. She was a member of Zion Grace United Methodist Church for 34 years. She was active in the United Methodist Women, Missions, and served on Pastor and Staff Parish Relations Committee, Finance Committee, and the Board of Trustees. She touched many children’s lives by participating in various children’s ministries.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, with the Rev. Seon-Young Kim and the Rev. Todd Schlechty officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Effie M. Belcher
PORTSMOUTH - Effie Marshall Belcher, 90, went to be with the Lord Sept. 17, 2007.
She was a native of Bluefield, W.Va. and worked as a telephone operator for Portsmouth Naval Hospital and C&P Telephone. She was formerly an active member of the Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club where she was the Club Champion more than 20 times. Most recently she was a resident of Bon Secours Province Place.
Mrs. Belcher was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Thoreau Belcher. She is survived by her son, Eric W. Belcher Sr. and wife Barbara; two grandsons, E. Wayne Belcher Jr. and wife Deanna and Robert T. Belcher and wife Beverly; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Nicole Belcher, Ryan Marshall Belcher and Barbara Adair Belcher; four sisters, Billie Juanita Hypes Hylton, Sandra Jane Hypes Harman, Caroline Sue Hypes Ryan and Brenda Louise Hypes Myers and a brother, Henry Alvin Hypes. She was predeceased by two sisters, Lucille Randolph Hypes Howell and Elizabeth Ann Hypes and three brothers, James Robert Hypes, Warren Gerald Hypes and Thomas Watson Hypes.

Luke D. Canady Jr.
PORTSMOUTH - Luke Dudley Canady Jr., 81, of the 300 block of Deal Drive, passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, in Portsmouth. A native of Portsmouth, he was a retired bindery worker for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 44 years and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Shirley L. Canady; three daughters, Susan Scott and husband Steve of Gallatin, Tenn., Debra Bowmar and husband A.J. and Peggy Glaneman, all of Portsmouth; two sisters, Elizabeth Williams and Marie Williams, both of Portsmouth; four brothers, Eugene Canady, Bill Canady and Corin Canady, all of Portsmouth and Patrick Stoklasa of Bluefield, W.Va.; a sister-in-law, Rennie Canady of Portsmouth; and four grandchildren, Stephanie Stamper, Erin Koster, Kirsten Glaneman and Kellie Glaneman.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Gene V. Primm. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at 311 Mayflower Road, Portsmouth.
