Margie D. Rice
PORTSMOUTH - Margie Davenport Rice, 82, went to be with the Lord Sept. 17, 2007. She was a native of Columbia, N.C. and a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church.
Margie was predeceased by her husband, Jack Preston Rice; parents, Alfred and Frances Davenport; two sisters, Clair Davenport and Ester D. Perry; two brothers, Ben Davenport and Willie Davenport; and a special friend, Joseph B. Noel. She is survived by three brothers, L.A. Davenport, “Buddy” Davenport and James Davenport all of North Carolina. She is also survived by very dear nieces, nephews, her caretakers and friends Marvin and Peggy Ayers.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel by the Rev. H.B. “Jackie” Allen and the Rev. Greg Sink, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jackson Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund. Rogelio T. Ramos
SUFFOLK - Rogelio T. “Roy” Ramos, 66, of the 3300 block of Mintonville Point Drive, went to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 17, 2007. Born in
Bacolod City, Philippines, he was the son of the late Floro B. Ramos. Roy was a retired U.S. Army first sergeant with 26 years of service and a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra L. Ramos; his mother, Julieta H. Tembrevilla Ramos; two daughters, Olivia G. Morris and husband Greg and Melanie L. Tyree and husband Chris; six grandchildren, Anjelica, Erin, Gabrielle, Jack, Shaunda and William; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Celia Gray, Mila Blackwell and Patricia Eurich; and four brothers, Calvin Ramos, Elardino Ramos, Fresnido Ramos and Phillip Ramos.
A celebration of Roy’s life with military honors will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Jackson Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Bryan Jones and Jackie Allen. Interment in Albert G. Horton Jr. State Veteran’s Cemetery will be private. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests offerings to the JMBC Mission or Music Ministries.

Nelson G. Davis
VIRGINIA BEACH - Nelson G. “Uncle Puzz” Davis of the 800 block of 15th St., died Sept. 14, 2007.
Born in Princess Anne County, he retired as a clerk for ABC stores after 30 years. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Virginia Beach; Masonic Lodge Oceana No. 69 Past Master PhA. 33 Degree; Arabi Temple No. 12, Portsmouth; Alpha & Omega Consistory No. 9, Norfolk; Order of the Eastern Star Evening Light Chapter No. 48, past patron. He was a lifetime member of the NAACP, Virginia Beach Chapter.
He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth G. Davis and Nelson H. Davis. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Jimmy Winston, Charles J. Miller, Sharon M. Byrd, Ernest R. Davis, Paul M. Davis and Elvia L. Davis; a host of great-nieces and -nephews; a special friend, Erma Harris and a host of other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, by the Rev. John T. Cherry. There will be a wake from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Olive Baptist Church. Community Funeral Home, Virginia Beach Chapel, is in charge.

Jerry M. Jackson
VIRGINIA BEACH - Jerry Michael Jackson, 57, of the 2200 block of Acorn Cove, passed away Sept. 15, 2007, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
A native of Terra Alta, W.Va., he was retired from the U.S. Navy after 28 years. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Ann Jackson and father, John Edward Calvin Jackson Sr.
He is survived by his son, Louis M. Jackson of Virginia Beach; his mother, Theda Shrout and her husband Donald of Kingwood, W.Va.; two sisters, JoAnne Connor of Bruceton, W.Va. and Linda Wolfrey of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; and three brothers, David Lantz Sr. of Oakland, Md., James Jackson and Leonard Jackson, both of Kingwood, W.Va. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Lantz and John Jackson Sr. and a sister, Dorothy Bickford.
A graveside service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood officiating. Horace F. Whitehorne
MURPHY - Horace F. Whitehorne, 89, passed away Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, at Stonehenge Assisted Living in Blairsville, Ga.
Mr. Whitehorne was a native of Portsmouth and the son of the late Joseph Latinus and Lena Lilly Whitehorne. He served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant in the 104th “Timberwolf” Infantry Division and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal Citation for meritorious service in connection with military operations in Germany from Nov. 11, 1945, until May 8, 1945. He was a heavy machine gun platoon leader.
He continued to serve his country in the U.S. Army Reserve from which he retired in 1969 as a lieutenant colonel. He retired in 1973 from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in the Public Works division after 33 years of service before moving to Murphy in 1985. He was a Master Mason, member of the Scottish Rite, member of the Oasis Shrine Temple and Western North Carolina Shrine Club. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Murphy, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Lucille McDonald Whitehorne who passed away Sept. 23, 2001, and one brother, Howard L. Whitehorne.
He is survived by two daughters, Marilyn W. Wells of Nebo, N.C. and Pam Strawn and her husband John of Murphy, N.C.; and two granddaughters, Holly Serene Strawn Meadows and her husband Spencer and Lacey Joy Strawn Anderson and her husband Jamie.
Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites conducted by veterans organizations: Murphy V. F. W. Post No. 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post No. 96 and D. A. V. Chapter No. 73 and Clay County V. F. W. Post No. 6812. The Rev. George Yates officiated.

Emma C. Grandison
CHESAPEAKE - Emma C. Grandison of the 1000 block of George Washington Hwy., died Sept. 15, 2007. She was predeceased by her husband, George Grandison.
Survivors include her daughter, Diane Grandison; sister, Mary Ward of Portsmouth; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Mildred Jenkins James
CHESAPEAKE - Mildred Jenkins James, 93, passed away Sept. 18, 2007. She was a native of DeWitt County, Illinois and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She was a retired Portsmouth Public School teacher.
Mildred was predeceased by her husband, Ray Thomas James. She is survived by her two daughters, Marjorie Engleman and her husband Bill of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Phyllis Parron and her husband Richard; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Beulah McNulty, Marjorie Shaw and June Kaylor.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Joseph Winfree and the Rev. Larry Adams. NORFOLK - The Rev. Marilyn Grace Johnson, 59, of the 800 block of Philpotts Road, passed away Sept. 14, 2007.
She is survived by her mother, Mary E. Jones; one son, Kevin Johnson; one sister, the Rev. Pocahontas Ashe; two brothers, the Rev. Dr. Freddie L. Jones and Earl Jones; an aunt and uncle, Alice and Leroy Whitaker; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Margaret E. Sparrow
NORFOLK - Margaret Elizabeth Sears Sparrow, 93, passed away Sept. 17, 2007. Born in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Charlton and Mary Grace
Sears. She was a member of Grace Baptist Temple in Chesapeake. Margaret loved helping others and friends and especially loved her grandchildren. Mom knew the Lord and He loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Eston Raleigh Sparrow; and her son, Robert Ernest Sparrow.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Bill Sparrow and his wife Pat of Norfolk, Gloria Sparrow Overton and her husband Charles of Raleigh, N.C., George Sparrow and his wife Brenda of Norfolk, Eddie Sparrow and his wife Paula of Chesapeake and Patricia Sparrow Semones and her husband David of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren, Susie, Mike, Theresa, Karen, Cheryl, Chris, Brian, Travis, Troy and Kenny; 12 great-grandchildren; her sister, Shirley Sears Cook of Chesapeake; and her brother, Sidney Vernon Sears of Virginia Beach.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Edward G. Powell officiating. Catherine A. Thompson
NORFOLK - Catherine Alexander Thompson, of the 1100 block of Alden Place, went home to be with her Lord Sept. 14, 2007. She was the daughter of the late James and Alberta Alexander and was born Oct. 17, 1912, in Dunnellon, Fla. Catherine was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church where she served in the Prayer Band, choir, Usher Ministry, Sunday school and the Seniors’ Ministry. She was a life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the United Order of Tents, The Campostella Civic League and the Forever Young through Faith and Fun Seniors Ministry of the St. Paul CME Church.
She was very proud that she worked closely with the late Mrs. Rosa Alexander in spearheading the drive to raise funds for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. She was presented the Martin Luther King Jr. and Civil Rights Award by the Citizen Forum of Hampton Roads.
She was a self-employed business woman. After arriving from Dunnellon, Fla., many years ago she began her career as a beautician and a real estate developer. She later sold Fuller Products and World Book Encyclopedias. She was still actively involved in real estate at the time of her death.
She made many friends and was admired and respected by her many customers and friends. She was affectionately called “Aunt Catherine” by many.
She was predeceased by her husband, Abraham Thompson; her parents; two sisters, Ethel Montgomery and Sallie Edwards, both formerly of Dunnellon.
Survivors include two special nieces, Rochelle Montgomery and Sallie Mae Dixon and many other nieces, great-nieces, great-great-nieces, nephews, adopted godsons, Bertrand Robinson and Donald Credle and a host of other sorrowing friends.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at New Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. William Collins Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Harriet C. Turner
PORTSMOUTH - Harriet (Carphine) Turner, 68, of the 1400 block of Newby Road, went to be with the Lord Saturday morning, Sept. 15, 2007, at home with her family. She was a native of Norfolk County, which is now Chesapeake. Mrs. Turner retired from Londontown Manufacturing Co. She was a faithful member of Greater Bethel AME Church for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Georgia Cuffee and a son, Henry Cuffee III.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Algie Lee Turner; four children, two daughters, Gail (Jim) Ramsey of Chesapeake and Vanessa Cuffee of the home; two sons, Vernon (Kim) Griffin of Portsmouth and Michael Cuffee of Williamsburg; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Delores Lonesome, Gladys Jarvis, Rose (Clarence) Caldwell, Judy Cuffee and Dale Cuffee.
A funeral will be held at noon Friday in Greater Bethel AME Church, 2320 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23323, by the Rev. William Chatman. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Graves Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Marvin Eugene Crowe
VIRGINIA BEACH - Marvin Eugene Crowe, passed away in his sleep at home Sept. 16, 2007, at 7:17 p.m. He was born on Aug. 10, 1928, in Cowpens, S.C., to the late Albert and Bessie Crowe. Marvin served his country in the United States Navy retiring with 25 years of service. Marvin was a devoted husband, loving father and a friend to all.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Antonina Crowe; son, Marvin E. Crowe II; granddaughters, Amalia and Baylee Crowe; and his twin brothers, Millard and Dillard Crowe of Woodruff, S.C.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. Inurnment will follow services with full military honors in Rosewood Memorial Park.
