U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014

Dean Francis Bragg, age 62, of Mountain View, Hickory, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
He was born in Weston, West Va., August 1, 1940, the son of the late William Alderson Bragg and Ernestine Zimmerman Bragg. He was employed with Huffy Service First in mechanical sales and service. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served during the Vietnam War. Mr. Bragg’s hobbies included sports and Nascar as well as an avid interest in history. Survivors include his wife, Loretta Evans Bragg of the home; one daughter, Deanna Ball and husband Sam of Bethlehem; and two grandchildren, Jacob Alexander Ball and Haley Nicole Ball, both of Bethlehem. Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 1, 2003, at the Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Hickory. Burial followed in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Alexander County. Memorials may be made to the Antioch Baptist Church Building Fund, 580 Antioch Church Rd., Taylorsville, NC 28681 or to the American Heart Association, 1229 Greenwood Cliff, Suite 109, Charlotte, NC 28204. Bass-Smith Funeral Home of Hickory was in charge of arrangements.

Earlie Clint Hager, Jr., age 60, of Statesville, died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at his residence following a two-month battle with liver cancer. He was born in Iredell County September 5, 1942, the son of Earlie Feimster Hager of Wilkesboro and the late Faye Marlowe Hager. He was self-employed as owner of Rental Properties. Survivors, in addition to his father, include his wife of thirty-nine years, Faye Head Hager; two daughters, Earlene McNeely and husband Joe and Edith Byers and husband Ryan, all of Statesville; two sisters, Linda Passmore of Wilkesboro and Sylvia Jines of Hiddenite; four grandchildren, Ben and Erin McNeely and Ken and Walker Byers; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was conducted Monday, August 4, 2003, at the Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jim Sneed officiating. Notes of sympathy may be e-mailed to the Hager Family at www.chapmanfuneralhome.com. Chapman Funeral Home of Stony Point was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Phillips Cheek, age 76, of Boone, died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Watauga Medical Center. She was born in Watauga County June 17, 1927, the daughter of the late John Smith Phillips and Florence Baird Phillips. Mrs. Cheek was retired from Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation after thirty-three years of service in customer service and as a custodian. She was a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas G. Cheek; a brother, Howard Phillips; and a sister, Mary Alice Cheek.
Survivors include one daughter, Janice C. Brown and husband Anthony of Boone; two sons, Gilbert Cheek of Lenoir and Michael Cheek of Taylorsville; four grandchildren, Linda Foster and husband and Jeff and Crystal Cheek, all of Blowing Rock, and Lauren Cheek and Jonathan Cheek, both of Hickory; three great-grandchildren, Andrea Foster, Jordan Foster, and Bryson Pearson, all of Blowing Rock; one sister, Pauline Isaacs and husband Gene of Boone; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Kathy Isaacs, Sherry Bishop, Jerry Cheek, Ronnie Cheek, and Ricky Cheek. Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 4, 2003, at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Craig officiating. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Rd., Boone, NC 28607.

Roger Joe Price, age 57, of Statesville, died Friday, August 1, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Iredell County October 29, 1945, the son of the late Raymond Price and Jeanette Lewis Price. He was a retired sheet metal worker and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Price was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Grady Price; a sister, Diane Price; his stepmother, Ida Benfield; and a stepbrother, Rudy Benfield. Survivors include his wife, Carol Zimmerman Price of the home; one son, Derrick Price of Cleveland, N.C.; one daughter, Shelia Ritchey of Taylorsville; three brothers, Tony Price and Perry Price of Statesville; two stepbrothers, Barry Benfield and Kenny Benfield, both of Statesville; two sisters, Brenda Goodin and Jean Kennedy, both of Statesville; two stepsister, Gloria Wilheim and Beverly Benfield, both of Statesville; and four grandchildren. A memorial service was held Sunday, August 3, 2003, at the Chapman Funeral Home Chapel in Stony Point with Rev. Buster Treadway officiating. Committal services will follow at a later date. Faye Dula Hollingsworth, age 75, of Hidden Valley Rd., Taylorsville, died Monday, August 4, 2003, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville following a lengthy illness. She was born in Alexander County November 16, 1927, the daughter of the late Rome W. Dula and Bessie Pennell Dula. She was a church office manager. She was a former member of Dover Baptist Church of Taylorsville, Beaches Chapel of Neptune Beach, Fla., and New Life Church of Taylorsville. Mrs. Hollingsworth was a graduate of Taylorsville High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Velva Pennell and Pauline Castevens, and a brother, Rome W. Dula, Jr. Survivors include her husband, William Hollingsworth; two sons, William Joel Hollingsworth and wife Debbi of Taylorsville and Rudy Dula Hollingsworth and wife Dottie of Hiddenite; six sisters, Ruby Chapman of Jacksonville, Fla., Jewell Riley of Hayward, Calif., Betty McWhorter and Bonnie Simms, both of Taylorsville, and Anderson Dula and Arcie Dula, both of Lenoir; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, August 7, 2003, at 8:00 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Taylorsville with Rev. Rudy Hollingsworth and Rev. Joel Hollingsworth officiating. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, August 9, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at Arlington Park Cemetery in Jacksonville, Fla. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, 7:00-8:00 p.m., at Adams Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Faye Hollingsworth Memorial Fund, 82 Jason Lane, Hiddenite, NC 28636. Adams Funeral Home of Taylorsville is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyna Parsons, age 83, of Taylorsville, died Saturday, September 27, 2003, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville. She had been in declining health for nine years and seriously ill for one week. She was born in Alexander County December 25, 1919, the daughter of the late Rev. J.A. Parsons and Minnie Bell Howell Parsons. She attended Happy Plains School and was a homemaker. Mrs. Parsons was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Parsons; a daughter, Christine Parsons; four brothers; and eight sisters.
Survivors include seven daughters, Clara Parsons and Evelyn Parsons, both of the home, Lena Barnes and husband Charlie, Joann McKeithan and husband Freddie, Wendy Ferguson and husband Rev. James Ferguson, and Helen Parsons, all of Taylorsville, and Patsy Parks and husband Lawson of Wilkesboro; two sons, Ross Edward Parsons and wife Loretta of Wilkesboro and Michael Parsons and wife Shirley of Taylorsville; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Harris of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. Lucille Vinson of Taylorsville; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church with Rev. M.J. Millsaps officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Adams Funeral Home of Taylorsville was in charge of arrangements.

Jettie Irene Rowe Mason, age 63, of Winston-Salem, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at her residence.
She was born in Alexander County May 25, 1940, the daughter of the late Harrison Jones Rowe and Mable Ella Carlton Rowe. She attended Happy Plains High School and continued her education at Winston-Salem State Uni-versity, graduating with a degree in elementary education. She began her career in Kings Mountain and moved to Atlantic City, N.J., in the mid-1960’s until her retirement in June 2001. She dedicated her life to the education of children, a career that spanned from 1961 to 2001, allowing her to touch the lives of countless children. Throughout her life, she maintained her church membership at St. John Baptist Church in Taylorsville. She joined the Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City, N.J., while she was there and united with First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem after her retirement. The challenges of illness cheated her from full enjoyment of her retirement years. Her thoughfulness of the children she taught, co-workers, family, friends, and neighbors will long be remembered. On Wednesday evening, September 24, 2003, she left her earthly life behind to join in the heavenly shores with her Lord and to be with her parents and her beloved husband, Levi, along with her sister Minnie, her brother Jimmie, and her special nephew Kent Andre’ Rowe. The Lord shared her here on earth with us for 63 years, three months, and thirty days, and many lives have been blessed in her presence here. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her huband, Morris Levi Mason, on December 2, 1987; a sister, Minnie Louise Rowe, on August 22, 2001; a brother, James “Jimmie” Lewis Rowe, on August 27, 2003; and a loving nephew, Kent Andre` Rowe on July 18, 1998. She leaves here on earth to cherish her memory her sister, Lizzie Mozelle Rowe of Graham; one aunt, Myrtle Rowe of Taylorsville; her mother-in-law, Beulah Mason of Atlantic City, N.J.; two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Rowe of Taylorsville and Essie Mason of Atlantic City, N.J.; one brother-in-law, Bobby Mason of Atlantic City, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sep-tember 27, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Interment followed in the St. John Baptist Church Cemetery in Taylorsville. Hooper Funeral Home of Winston-Salem was in charge of arrangements.

Hettie Bell Luther Linville, age 80, of Hays, died Thursday, September 25, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Wilkes County January 7, 1923, the daughter of the late Lindoffe Luther and Geneva Griffin Luther. She was a retired textile worker and a member of White Oak Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Hansford Wyatt; two sons, Walter Wyatt and Thomas Wyatt; and a sister, Mazie Minton. Survivors include her husband Lawrence Linville of the home; two sons, James Wyatt and Vernon Wyatt, both of Hays; five daughters, Willie Barnes and Jean Brown, both of Stony Point, Marie Meredith of Hiddenite, Bonnie Wyatt of Hickory, and Marcia Dixon of North Wilkesboro; twenty grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Saturday, September 27, 2003, at the White Oak Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Charles Younce officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes County, 1907 West Park Dr., North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Roland Lee Stanley, age 35, of Statesville, died unexpectedly Friday, September 26, 2003, at his residence.
He was born in Silverton, Idaho, May 10, 1968, the son of John C. Stanley of Spokane, Wash., and Kathy Bryant Winstead of Welch, West Va. He was a textile worker and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by one brother, David Stanley. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Donna Brown Stanley of the home; one son, Stephen Allan Stanley of the home; one daughter, Amber Nicole Stanley of the home; three brothers, Dwayne Stanley and Cecil Winstead, both of Statesville, and William Stanley of Arlington, Texas; two sisters, Samantha Stanley of Arlington, Texas, and Crystal Winstead of Welch, West Va.; and his maternal grandmother, Hazel Bryant of Hemphill, West Va.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at the Chapman Funeral Home Chapel in Stony Point with Rev. Buster Treadway officiating. Grace Chapman Burns, age 91, of Valdese, died Saturday, September 27, 2003, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville following a period of declining health. She was born in Alexander County February 14, 1912, the daughter of the late Soloman Coburn Chapman and Maggie Lula Robinette Chapman. She was a member of Valdese First Baptist Church and was a retired supervisor from Burke Mills. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Burns; four brothers, Josephus, Canie, Elisha, and Don Chapman; a sister, Dona Orren; and her step-mother, Emma Chapman. Survivors include one brother, Floyd Chapman of Taylorsville; four sisters, Maggie McEntire of Wilkesboro, Mae Pearson and Mary Chapman, both of Taylorsville, and Dorothy Lowery of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sep-tember 29, 2003, at Valdese First Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Cline officiating. Burial followed in Burke Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to South Mountain Children’s Home, 7330 Myrtle Dr., Nebo, NC 28761. Heritage Funeral Service of Valdese was in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Russell “Sonny” Rector, age 59, of Paul Payne Store Rd., Stony Point, died Saturday, September 27, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-salem.
He was born in Iredell County June 12, 1944, the son of the late Clarence C. Rector and Vivian Bostian Rector. He was a member of Marvin United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lt. Col. Larry Rector. Survivors include one sister, Mary Elder of Stony Point; a sister-in-law, Loradana Rector of Naples, Italy; one niece, Kellie Elder of Stony Point; one nephew, Ian Lawrence Rector of Naples, Italy; and aunts and uncle, Maudie Hedrick of Stony Point and Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Bostian of Greensboro. A memorial service was conducted Monday, September 29, 2003, at Marvin United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Setzer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Marvin United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 671 Marvin Church Ct., Stony Point, NC 28678. Kathleen E. Harrill, age 72, of Raleigh, died Sunday, September 28, 2003. She was born in Alexander County March 28, 1931, the daughter of the late Sam Echerd and Cora Hammer Echerd. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Harrill, Jr. Survivors include a son, William P. Harrill, III, of Raleigh, and four sisters, Thelma Mendenhall of Winston-Salem, Helen Smyre of Durham, Marie Atwood of Kannapolis, and Arveta Millsaps of Charlotte. A celebration of Mrs. Harrill’s life will be held Thursday morning, October 2, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 125 Hillsborough St., Raleigh. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, October 1, 2003, 7:00-8:30 p.m., at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary’s St., Raleigh. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s St., 4th Floor, Raleigh, N C 27605. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Raleigh is in charge of arrangements.
