Raymond C. Barr
Raymond Cecil Barr, 81, of Statesville, died Saturday, January 20, 2007.
Mr. Barr was born May 3, 1925, in Ashe County, the son of the late Willie Barr and Dottie Howell Barr.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a son, Arthur Dean Barr; a grandson, Charles "Chuckie" Daniel Barr; a brother, Junior Barr; and a sister, Peggy Miller.
Mr. Barr is survived by his wife, Connie Neaves Barr; four sons, James Barr and wife Louise and Charles Barr and wife Paula, all of Statesville, Roger Barr and wife Lana of Bassett, Va., and Billy Barr of Taylorsville; three daughters, Betty Kurley and husband Jack and Shelby Sherrill and husband Tony, both of Statesville, and Ruth Foster and husband Mark of Marion; a sister, Ardeen Rhodes of Warrensville; twenty-five grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Greens Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Henderson and Rev. Billy Joe Blevins officiating. Burial followed in the Howell Hill Cemetery.

Berdie E. Mooney
Berdie Mae Echerd Mooney, 78, of Mooney Drive, Taylorsville, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Frye Regional Medical Center - Alexander Campus in Taylorsville.
She was born in Alexander County July 2, 1928, the daughter of the late Roscoe Echerd and Hattie Hammer Echerd. She was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church and was a retired furniture worker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billie Lee Mooney, and two sisters, Evelyn Kirby and Mabel Wilbur.
Mrs. Mooney is survived by three daughters, Judy Jones of Little Rock, Arkansas, Darlene Parlier of Newton, and Treasa Cline of Hiddenite; four sons, Rick Mooney and Steve Mooney, both of Bethlehem, Ronnie Mooney of the Ellendale Community of Alexander County, and Phil Mooney of the Wittenburg Community of Alexander County; a sister, Jeanette Knox of Taylorsville; four brothers, Basil Echerd of Taylorsville, Paul Echerd of Melbourne, Florida, and Larry Echerd and Donald Echerd, both of Taylorsville; and eight grandchildren, Monica Able, Brandy Parlier, Nathan Mooney, Jared Mooney, Cortni Cline, Colt Cline, Rebekah Mooney, and Melissa Mooney.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday, January 26, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Herman Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Schronce officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the memorial service.

Paul W. Elder
Paul Wayne Elder, 66, of Taylorsville, passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 19, 2007, at Frye Regional Medical Center - Alexander Campus in Taylorsville.
He was born November 7, 1940, in Chase City, Virginia, the son of the late Howard W. Elder and Nellie Dagenhart Elder. He was a member of Vashti Baptist Church, where he served on the Building and Grounds Committee and as a Church Clerk. He was always very involved with his grandchildren and loved to watch them play ball. He was employed with Ryder Truck Rental for twenty-four years as a diesel mechanic.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gregory Paul Elder.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Greene Elder of the home; one daughter, Lisa Elder Chapman and husband Leo of Hiddenite; two sons, Mark Anthony Elder and friend Jeannie Mitchell of Hiddenite, and Matthew Van Elder and wife Ashli of Bethlehem; one daughter-in-law, Terri Elder Cook and husband David of Bethlehem; ten grandchildren, Bradley Clint Elder, Ethan Lee Elder, Parker Alex Cook, Haley Nicole Chapman, Logan Kyle Chapman, Ryan Gregory Chapman, Justin Wayne Elder, Jason Anthony Elder, Kady Ashlin Elder, and Kinsey LeRae Elder; two brothers, Steve Elder and Robert Elder and wife Wanda, all of Taylorsville; three sisters, Margaret Baity, Lois Jolly and husband Junior, and Joyce Settlemeyer and husband Gary, all of Taylorsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Gary D. Elder
Gary Dean Elder, 59, of Taylorsville, passed away Friday, January 19, 2007, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
He was born in Iredell County May 21, 1947, the son of the late Maude Webster Elder. He was employed in the Maintenance Depart-ment at Schneider Mills in Taylorsville for twenty-eight years and was a volunteer fireman for the Sugar Loaf Fire Department. He also served in the U.S. Army for two years.
In addition to his mother. he was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Mitchell and Linda Peters, and one aunt, Pansy Webster.
He is survived by his wife, Rheda Starnes Elder of the home; two sons, Wesley Elder and wife Melissa of Raleigh and Larry Elder and wife Stephanie of Taylorsville; two brothers, Bobby Lee Elder of Taylorsville and Lindsay Elder of Florida; two sisters, Marie Reid and husband Grady of Taylorsville and Marlene Jarrell of Taylorsville; two half-sisters, Peggy Johnson and husband Tommy of Hiddenite and Margaret Watts of Hiddenite; a half-brother, David Tevepaugh of Taylorsville; one granddaughter, Olivia Elder of Raleigh; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 22, 2007, at the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel in Taylorsville with Rev. Gary Jennings and Rev. Josh Benge officiating. Burial follow in the Harrington Cemetery in Taylorsville.

Margaret S. Keller
Margaret Marie Starnes Keller, 74, of Hickory, died Saturday, January 20, 2007, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley.
She was born January 18, 1933, in Alexander County, the daughter of the late Glenn H. Starnes and Mary Pauline Starnes. Mrs. Keller was a member of Penelope Baptist Church. She enjoyed baking and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband of fifty-six years, James Leroy Keller of the home; four daughters, Pat McDaniel and husband Don of Vale, Cathy King and husband Reg of Charlotte, Nancy Ledford and husband Randy of Valdese, and Sandy Morgan and husband William of Fountain Inn, S.C.; three brothers, Johnny Hayden Starnes, Sr., and wife Linda of Taylorsville, Dale Starnes of Bethlehem, and Scottie Starnes of Hickory; a sister, Regina Milstead of Bethlehem; twelve grandchildren, Donald McDaniel, Adam McDaniel, Megan McDaniel, Garrett King, Josh Martin, Amy Martin, Matt Martin, Jennifer Ledford, Ian Ledford, Ashley Morgan, Brena Morgan, and Cory Long; a great-grandson, Sawyer Layne McDaniel; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Barbara C. Hines
Barbara Kaye Campbell Hines, 71, of Deal Rd., Mooresville, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ Wednesday, January 17, 2007.
She was born in Cabarrus County February 18, 1935, the daughter of the late Ray Lanier Campbell and Elizabeth Mae Plyler Campbell. She retired in 1997 from Cannon Mills as a supervisor in the dye department after working with Cannon for thirty-seven years. Mrs. Hines was a member of Charity Baptist Church and a member of the Hornet’s Nest Antique Car Club. She also loved spending time at her beach house with her two dogs, Cricket and Tissy.
Survivors include her husbnd, Paul D. “Buddy” Hines of the home; a son, Paul Ray Hines and wife Jeanie of China Grove; a daughter, Cindy Sloop and husband David of China Grove; two brothers, Norman Campbell and wife Catherine of Kannapolis and Donald Campbell and wife Tommie of Concord; a sister, Carolyn Fink of Kannapolis; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; an uncle,
Walter Hines of Taylorsville; and an aunt, Jean Smith of Hiddenite.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 21, 2007, at Charity Baptist Church in Kannapolis with Rev. R. J. Hammond, Rev. Gene Beaver, and Rev. Ron Bushy officiating. Burial followed in Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.

Odessa Newland
Odessa Bennett Newland, 84, of Taylorsville, passed away Friday, January 19, 2007, at Brian Center in Statesville.
She was born in Alexander County October 1, 1922, the daughter of the late Will Bennett and Anna McClain Bennett.
At an early age, she became a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Taylorsville.
Church Homecomings and Revivals were her passions until her health declined. She missed taking food and meeting with family and friends on those special days of the year.
She received her education at Happy Plains School in Taylorsville and was retired from Lewittes Furniture in Taylorsville. Mrs. Newland was a homemaker and loved working in her garden and with flowers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son; seven brothers, Lonnie, Walter, James, Thomas, Obie, Floyd and Asa; and three sisters, Emma Felder, Isabelle Hillsman, and Lula Mae Lackey.
She is survived by her husband, John Newland of Brian Center in Statesville; four sisters-in-law; a special friend, Mrs. Wilma Stokes of Taylorsville; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel in Taylorsville with Rev. Vince Linney officiating. Burial followed in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Horace J. Chapman
Horace Jacob Chapman, 86, of Hickory, died Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley.
Born September 11, 1920, in Alexander County, he was the son of the late Peter T. Chapman and Rufinnie Brown Chapman.
Mr. Chapman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II in the Pacific. He was a member of Viewmont Baptist Church and was active in former churches in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Cape Coral, Florida.
He was a gemologist and co-owner of a jewelry store in Rockville, Maryland, for thirty years. Mr. Chapman was also a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite, Almas Shrine Temple in Alexandria, Virginia, and a member of the Bethlehem Ruritan Club.
He was an avid gardener, loved golf, and especially enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, Marjorie Teague Chapman of the home; a brother, Laban Chapman of Kannapolis; two nieces, Ann C. Davis and husband Tommy of Davidson and Nancy C. Hooper and husband Peter of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland; and a number of local nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Viewmont Baptist Church in Hickory Friday, January 19, 2007, with Dr. Rick Jordan officiating. Honorary pallbearers included members of The Master Workman Class.

Rev. James Pierce
Rev. James Andrew Pierce, 65, of Gastonia, died Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at Gaston Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
He was born in Iredell County August 4, 1941, the son of the late Harvell Pierce and Zula Shook Pierce. He was a Baptist minister.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Kaczor Pierce of the home; two sons, Darrel Pierce and Gary Pierce, both of Taylorsville; a daughter, Sharon White of Taylorsville; two brothers, Johnny Pierce of Conover and Wayne Pierce of Virginia; three sisters, Jasperine Bradshaw of Conover, Phyllis Fox of Newton, and Barbara Martin of Tennessee; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, January 27, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Millersville Baptist Church. There will be no formal visitation.

Reba H. Walker
Myrtle Reba Hawkins Walker, 74, of Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, died Saturday, January 20, 2007, at Avante Nursing Center in Wilkesboro following an illness of ten months.
She was born September 12, 1932, in Wilkes County, a daughter of the late Major Martin Hawkins and Stella Wyatt Hawkins. She was a member of New Covenant Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Hawkins and Jack Hawkins.
Survivors include her husband, Billy Joe Walker of the home; two sons, Richard Walker of North Wilkesboro and Tommy Walker of Purlear; four daughters, Shirley Beshears of Purlear, Joeann Pollard of Jefferson, and Vicki Brown and Tammy Griffin, both of North Wilkesboro; ten grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at New Covenant Baptist Church in Hays with Rev. Don Myers officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Lee Gary Mayes
Minister Lee Gary Mayes, 35, of Huntersville and formerly of Taylorsville, lost his courageous battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma Mon-day, January 29, 2007, at 12:30 a.m. at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
He was born in Alexander County October 21, 1971, the son of Jerry and Clara Flowers Mayes. He was a 1990 graduate of Alexander Central High School, where he was a member of the Cougar Basketball Team and also was involved in football and track. After graduation, he attended Livingston College in Salisbury for one year before transferring to Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications and was a member of the track team.
He was the owner, president, and CEO of MayComm Marketing, Inc., a benefits/investments company that specialized in healthcare benefits, stock investments, real estate, and financial planning.
Mr. Mayes was also a motivational speaker and author. In 2004, he published his first book, Economic Evangelist, Helping People to Become Financially Literate, which became a bestseller. The work is currently being sold overseas and at Barnes and Noble bookstores. He was working on his second book, which was not yet completed due to his failing health.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Clifford Flowers, and an aunt, Carolyn Mayes.
Loved ones left to cherish his memories include his wife, Elizabeth Burns, whom he married May 8, 2004; his parents, Jerry and Clara Flowers Mayes of Taylorsville; one sister, Tilara Mayes Sims and husband Lee of Shelby; two brothers, Michael Mayes of Denver, N.C., and Curtis Mayes of Annapolis, Md.; two nieces, Tasha Mayes of Winston-Salem and Shakayla Mayes of Hickory; maternal grandmother, Alice Flowers of Taylorsville; paternal grandmother, Nellie Mayes of Taylorsville; two aunts, Summa Mayes Watts and husband Richard and Linda Flowers Mayberry and husband Jerry, all of Taylorsville; five uncles, Willis Mayes, Sr., and wife Barbara, Edsel Flowers and wife Betty, Kent Flowers and wife Sylvia, Howard Flowers and wife Shirley, and Albert Flowers, all of Taylorsville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lois L. Howard
Lois "Teenie Babe" Little Howard, 86, of Taylorsville, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Caldwell County Hospice in Lenoir. She was born in Alexander County June 29, 1920, the daughter of the late William Little and Annie Elizabeth Icenhour. She was a lifelong member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where she was a choir member. Mrs. Howard had worked at Brian Center in Hickory, Broyhill Furniture Industries in Lenoir, Hickory Manufacturing, Downey Springs in Hickory, Ideal Frame in Taylorsville, and in the Green Thumb program of Alexander County.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James William Howard; one son, Lewis Ray Little; two daughters, Molly Howard and Polly Hartsfield; four brothers, Morris Little, Coot Little, R.D. "Bud" Little, and John Little; four sisters, Flora Lee Whitener, Hattie Mae Morrison, Louise Morrison, and Rebecca Jackson.
Survivors include six children, Etta Mae Miller and husband Robert and Rev. Sterling Howard and wife Elizabeth, all of Taylorsville, Rosa Lee Wellman of Greensboro, Peggy Jean Scott and husband Charles of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Omar Hassan and Janice Howard, both of Taylorsville; one brother, William "Bill" Little of Newton; one sister, Helen Blanche Byrd of Newton; eighteen grandchildren, Deneen Thomas, Kim Howard, Tony Howard, April Johnson, Allandus Corpe- ning, Safiyyah Hassan, Dorothy Mae Miller, Martin Louis Miller, Debra Chambers and husband Terry, Rev.
