Polly McKinney
Ruby Pauline “Polly” Stanley McKinney, 64, of Mt. Olive Church Rd., Taylorsville, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.
She was born in Ashe County January 14, 1943, the daughter of Ruby Roten Stanley of Millers Creek and the late Paul Stanley. She was employed with Shady Rest Home in Taylorsville.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include two daughters, Wendy Teague and husband Shaun of Taylorsville and Roberta Loftin and husband Mike of Conover; three sons, Paul McKinney and wife Wendy of Taylorsville, Robert McKinney and wife Julie of Elkin, and Michael McKinney and wife Sandra of North Wilkesboro; two sisters, Mary Puperi and husband Jim of North Canton, Ohio, and Sandi Garcia and husband Alex of Stony Point; three brothers, Neil Stanley and wife Melba of Chesterfield, S.C., Daymon Stanley and wife Janet of Warrensville, and Cliff Stanley and wife Loretta of Millers Creek; nineteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 13, 2007, at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wiley Boggs officiating. Burial followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Alvin Bullington
Minister Alvin Carter Bullington, 82, of Lenoir, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Gateway Nursing Center in Lenoir.
He was born July 19, 1924, in Bradley County, Tenn., the son of the late Lonnie Blanco Bullington and Maude Belle Humphreys Bullington. Minister Bullington was a loving husband and father who faithfully served the Lord for over fifty years. He was a member of Taylorsville Church of Christ and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers.
Survivors include his wife of over fifty six years, Phyllis Bullington of the home; three sons, Edward Bullington and wife Judy of Lenoir, Douglas Bullington and wife Debbie of Edinboro, Penn., and Phillip Bullington and wife Jo of Whitnel; two daughters, Teresa Sexton and husband Eric of Westfield, Ind., and Sharon Burris and husband Roger of Patterson; one sister, Ruth Worsham and husband Doyle of Albertville, Ala.; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 16, 2007, at the Lenoir Church of Christ with Minister Johnny Hutchinson, Minister Will Winchester, and Minister John Mayo officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Hazel D. Barnes
Hazel Catherine Dagenhart Barnes, 75, of Country Road, Taylorsville, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at Catawba Valley Medical Center following an illness of one week.
She was born September 25, 1931, in Alexander County, the daughter of the late Ed and Clara Warren Dagenhart. She was a member of Carson’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was involved in many activities, including serving as organist and pianist. She loved her church, family, and friends, and loved helping out in the community and also with Angel Food Ministries. Mrs. Barnes had been employed with Schneider Mills, Flexnit, and Carolina Glove before working twenty-three years at Broyhill Furniture until she retired. She also had worked part time at Wal-Mart.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Oak Barnes; two brothers, Ewell Dagenhart and Paul Dagenhart; and a sister, Thelma Bumgarner.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda Moore and husband Marshall of Liberty, Nancy Randolph and husband Clarence of Burnsville, and Sandra Millsaps and husband Bradley of Taylorsville; three sons, Wayne Barnes and wife Claudette, of Stony Point, Barry Barnes and wife Tammy of Taylorsville, and Andy Barnes and wife Cinda of Taylorsville; a sister, Frances Emo Elder of Winston-Salem; a brother, Earl Dagenhart and wife Betty of Taylorsville; a sister-in-law, Alice Dagenhart of Taylorsville; eight grandchildren, Corey Ladd, Melissa Barnes, Kevin Barnes and wife Misty, Tanya Perkins and husband Jody, Kim Randolph, Sara Randolph, Second Class Petty Officer Daniel Randolph of the U. S. Navy, and Brian Millsaps; seven great-grandchildren, Kolby and Macy Barnes, Jordan, Jacob, and Bobbie Crosby, Johnny Kennedy, and Dawson Barnes; a number of nieces and nephews; special friends, Margaret Baity and Hayden and Helen Sipe; and her special pet dog, Scooby-Doo.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at Carson’s Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Rodney Frye, Rev. Ron Setzer, Rev. Joyce Bunn, and Rev. Mark Dula officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour.

Montina “Tina” Faye Jones, 34, of Lincolnton, died Friday, May 4, 2007.
She was born in Cleveland County and was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Denver, N.C. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed life to the fullest.
Survivors include her husband, Danny Keith Jones of the home; two sons, Dustin Melburn Jones and Dakota Joseph Jones, both of the home; her parents, Gary and Jean McCorkle of Lincolnton; two brothers, Shane McCorkle and Jamie McCorkle, both of Lincolnton; two sisters, Cindy Tucker of Denver and Angie Tucker of Lincolnton; several nieces and nephews; her mother-in-law, Jean Jones of Taylorsville and the late Melburn Jones; a brother-in-law, Randall Jones and wife Kim of Lenoir; and four sisters-in-law, Gwen Williamson and husband Lonnie of Stony Point and Norma Dyson and husband Larry, Trisha Jones, and Cheri Jones, all of Taylorsville.

Thomas D. Norton, Sr.
Thomas Dalton Norton, Sr., 80, of Statesville, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville.
He was born in Alexander County December 5, 1926, the son of the late William Hubbard Norton and Minnie Hendren Norton. He was a graduate of Stony Point High School and a member of Stony Point Baptist Church. Mr. Norton was a farmer and was retired from Intercraft Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Cockrell Norton; a son, Joel Leroy Norton; a grandson, Brian Thomas Norton; two brothers, Ray Norton and Howard Norton; and five sisters, Ethel Mayberry, Marie Stout, Edith Waugh, Hazel Campbell, and Ruth Beard.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Norton, Jr. and wife Judy of Statesville; two daughters, Nancy Norton Lowrance and husband Smith of Statesville and Pamela Norton Davidson and husband Keith of Taylorsville; ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rachel Norton Reavis of Statesville.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Norton was conducted Friday, May 11, 2007, at Stony Point Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Barefoot and a nephew, Rev. Sidney Norton, officiating. Burial followed in the Stony Point Cemetery. Mr. Norton’s nephews served as pallbearers.

Mary A. Campbell
Mary Ayers Campbell, 96, of Abernethy Laurels, Newton, and formerly of Hickory, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2007, following a short illness.
Born February 18, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Coleman Payne and Lucy Matheson Payne of Taylorsville. She was reared in Taylorsville and was a 1931 graduate of Salem College with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, R. LeRoy Campbell; her oldest son, James Pleasant Campbell; and her brother, William Matheson Payne.
Survivors include her son, Robert L. Campbell and wife, Margaret Ann of Hickory; grandson, Robert Campbell and great-grandson, Henry, of Charlotte; granddaughter, Sally Campbell Robinson, and great-granddaughter, Lucy, of Hickory; and grandson, Jim Campbell and wife, Sara Alfrey Campbell, and great-granddaughters, Helen and Natalie of Dallas, Texas. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Campbell White and husband, Robert White, of Jacksonville, Fla., and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Campbell was an active force in the community and church. In 1940, she was elected president of the 3rd District of the N.C. Federation of Women’s Clubs and helped establish the Hickory Senior Citizen Clubhouse. She was a catalyst in starting the Hickory Service League’s first antique show, as well as the first duplicate bridge club in the area. She received a Lifetime Membership to Presbyterian Women of Concord Presbytery. She was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Hickory and was awarded the honorary Life Membership there. She was a delegate to the 120th Meeting of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1980. In 1988, she received the Distinguished Service Award from Montreat-Anderson College, and in 1992, received the Distinguished Alumna Award from Salem College. She was a member emeritus of the Travelers’ Club of Hickory, which is the oldest woman’s literary group in North Carolina.
In 1942, she and her family started a 39-year tradition, spending their summers in Montreat. She started her travels as the representative of the Women of the Synod of N.C. to the World Mission sites at age 50. She eventually traveled to almost every country in the world. For her husband’s health, they lived in Hawaii during the winter for over 10 years where, at age 65, she learned to swim. Swimming, bridge and traveling became her passions in her later years. Her last trip was in the fall of 2006 at age 95.
She was an active resident at Abernethy Laurels for over 17 years.
A family graveside service was held Saturday, May 12, 2007, at the Taylorsville City Cemetery with a memorial service following at First Presbyterian Church of Hickory with Dr. Wallace Johnson officiating.

Delsie Childers Kerley, 87, of Taylorsville, passed away Friday, May 11, 2007, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville.
She was born in Alexander County August 8, 1919, the daughter of the late David Wilburn Childers and Emma Catherine Shoemaker. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She was an avid genealogist and loved scrapbooking family memorabilia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Crowson Kerley; two half-brothers, Wade Childers and Clyde Childers; one brother, Lawson Childers; three infant siblings; three sisters, Mae Treadway, Lecy Buice, and Ivey Moore; and one son-in-law, Esco Hubbard.
Survivors include four daughters, Hilda Hubbard and husband Tommy and Shelby Jean Hubbard, all of Taylorsville, Gladys Ann Stikeleather and husband Paul of Hiddenite, and Sherry Hammer and husband Roland of Taylorsville; one son, Robert Lee Kerley and wife Loretta of Taylorsville; ten grandchildren, Karen Hubbard, Kelvin Hubbard, Kimberly Bumgarner, Lisa Jones, Lora Davis, Robin Kerley, Travis Hammer, and Matthew Hubbard, all of Taylorsville, Billy Key of Pilot Mountain, and Joy Elmore of Asheboro; fourteen great-grandchildren, Kelly Hickerson, Jason Keever, Sierra Ball, Jordan Hubbard, Kristin Hubbard, Jeremy Bumgarner, Jody Bumgarner, Michelle Branson, Tyler Jones, Andrew Jones, Kylie Davis, Caleb Davis, Gracey Kerley, and Brianna Joy Nicole Elmore (on the way) ; one great-great-grandchild, Emma Grace Hickerson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was born April 8, 1958, in Miami, Florida, to the late Chester E. Neugent and Ruth C. Tietz Neugent. She had been employed as a bindery supervisor with Graphics Illustrated in Palm Beach, Florida and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Manuel; a son, James Johnathan Milner of Taylorsville; two sisters, Melody Raynor of Statesville and Sandra M. Kitto of Largo, Florida; a brother, David N. Paro of Palm Bay, Florida; three nieces, Stephenie A. McGee, Susan Hall, and Sarah Hall, all of Taylorsville; and four nephews, Robert L. Hall and Austin Dakota Lewis, both of Taylorsville, Christopher Paro of Palm Bay, Florida, and Cody Owings of Taylorsville.

Joan Anderson Phillips, 74, of Brushy Mtn. Rd., Lenoir, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at the home of her daughter after a battle with cancer.
She was born May 13, 1933, in Caldwell County, the daughter of the late Dayton Anderson and Lula Jane "Janie" Fox Whitener Goble Anderson. She was a retired textile worker and was a member of Oxford Memorial Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jordan S. Phillips; one son, Randy Phillips; three sisters, Doris Hartley, Irene Robinette, and Dean Brown; her mother-in- law, Flara Main Phillips, and her father-in-law, Newton Amos Phillips.
Remaining family includes one daughter, Debra Townsend and husband Robert of Lenoir; four brothers, Olin Anderson and wife Kay, Richard Anderson and wife Carolyn, Gene Anderson and wife Mae, and James Anderson and wife Donna, all of Lenoir; one sister, Kay White of Lenoir; two grandchildren, Michael Phillips and wife Cindy of Granite Falls and Christopher Phillips of Boone; two great-grandchildren, Trevor Dale Phillips and Jordan James Phillips; three step-grandchildren, Ashley Townsend of Charlotte, Gregory Holland and wife Jessica of Maryland, and Candace Holland of Lenoir; three sisters-in-law, Donnie Lackey and husband Waitsell of Stony Point, Joyce Gryder of Lenoir, and Anna Lee Smith of Lenoir; and a host of nephews and nieces.
