Joseph D. Lea
POINT HARBOR - Joseph Davis Lea, M.D. died March 8, 2008, in Chapel Hill at the age of 95. Dr. Lea was born Dec. 29, 1912, in New Orleans, La., the son of the late Josiah Davis and Nell Hinson Lea. Dr. Lea was married to Lois Gannaway Lea, his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, who died in 1988.
He is survived by two sons, Frank Gannaway Lea of New Bern and retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel Joseph Davis Lea Jr. of Chapel Hill; his grandchildren, Joseph Davis Lea III, Ph. D of Chapel Hill, Jordan Christian Lea of Chapel Hill, Jonathon D. Lea of Raleigh, Laura Ashely Lea of Blowing Rock, Patrick Lea of Cincinnati, Ohio and James Lea of Camden County; and eight great-grandchildren.
Dr. Lea graduated from Tulane University and Louisiana State University Medical School with honors. He served as a major in the U. S. Army Medical Corps in combat in Europe in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. Dr. Lea was a diplomat on the American Board of Internal Medicine, Fellow of the American College of Physicians and Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Lea practiced medicine in Norfolk from 1947 to 1970 and served as Chief of Staff at Bon Secours DePaul Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church St., Elizabeth City, with the Rev. David Blackman officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the funeral home lobby. Donations to a charity of choice should be made in lieu of flowers. There will be a private ceremony for the interment of the ashes.
