VIRGINIA BEACH - Doris Christine Merz, 83, passed away March 14, 2008. She was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Fairmount, W.Va. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Merz.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, David Talbert and wife Fina of Virginia Beach and William Talbert of South Carolina; daughter, Karen Talbert of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Leslie, Shannon, Doug, Jason, Laura, Ursula and Sherry; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday in Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. A graveside service will be held at noon Tuesday immediately following the visitation in Rosewood Memorial Park.

Nell T. McCutcheon

NORFOLK - Nell Taylor McCutcheon was born May 7, 1917, in Russell County, Virginia, and passed away March 2, 2008, and is now at peace.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia S. Ewing and Sandra Tyson; three grandchildren, Kimberly Conklin and husband Donald Conklin, Daniel Tyson and Kenneth Tyson; and 3-year-old triplet great-grandchildren whom she enjoyed and helped fill her life, Julia, Zachary and Joshua Conklin.

SUFFOLK

George S. Drewry

SUFFOLK - George Samuel Drewry, 83, widower of Rose Baugham Drewry, died March 14, 2008. Born in Southampton County, he was a son of the late Hattie West and Irvin Duck Drewry and was also predeceased by a brother, Earl F. Drewry and three sisters, Martha Lou Drewry, Elsie Beasley and Nell Ashby.

He was an Army veteran of World War II having served in the Pacific Theatre and 30 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. George was a retired superintendent of maintenance at Deerfield Correctional Center in Capron and former owner/operator of George S. Drewry Plumbing and Electrical. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and a former member of the Holy Neck-South Quay Ruritan Club.

Survivors include two sons, Gordon Drewry of Suffolk and Allen Edwards Drewry and his wife Carol of Franklin; three grandchildren, Kelly D. Coe and husband Russell, Samuel Lee Drewry and wife Jessica and Phillip Allen Drewry; five great-grandchildren, Hailey Danielle Coe, Matthew Gordon Coe, Joshua Lee Drewry, Makenzie Leiann Drewry and Brianna Hicks; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Clyde Alderman officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Willa Boyd

CANNONSBURG, Ky. - Willa Queen Boyd, 92, passed peacefully from her home in Cannonsburg, Ky., Monday morning, Feb. 18, 2008.

Mrs. Boyd was the daughter of the late Den and Lora Roberts Queen, born at Rush, Ky., on Nov. 5, 1915. She was a graduate of Morehead Teachers College, now the Morehead State University, and a retired school teacher with hundreds of students in the Boyd County school system to recall her in the class room. Also, Willa was an educator in the Virginia school system, teaching at Norfolk Highlands in Norfolk County and Baylake Pines United Methodist School in Virginia Beach. Willa and Dan Boyd were retired military, Navy and made their home in Virginia Beach for 25 years, prior to moving home to Kentucky in 1982. Willa and Dan were also active members of Baylake Pines United Methodist Church.

She was a faithful member of Kenova United Methodist Church, where she taught the Loyal Bible Class, also a lifetime member of Trace Homemakers and a Kentucky Colonel, who loved to cook and entertain family and friends.

Sadly, Willa leaves behind her loving husband of 60 happy years, Daniel H. Boyd; a niece, Deane (Fred) Fields; five nephews, Doug (Garnet) Riffe, Bob (Ann) Riffe, Steve (Marsha) Riffe, Warren (Carolyn) Burton and Bill (Sue) Lykins.

Preceding in death are three sisters, Eloise Burton, Hala Wheeler and Laura Riffe; and nephews, Garrett Burton and David Lykins.

A funeral in memory of Willa Boyd was held at 11 a.m. Thursday Feb. 21, 2008, in Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. The Rev. Lindsay Thorp offered words of comfort and inspiration. Great-nephews served as casket bearers. Final rest followed a committal in Queen Cemetery in Rush, Ky.

John Fenton Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH - John “Jack” Fenton Jr., 79, passed away at his home on the morning of March 16, 2008. He was with his family and went peacefully. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather

“Jadeck.” We will miss him dearly.

He fought a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born in Carbondale, Pa., June 14, 1928. He was a 20-year Navy veteran with 14 years as a cryptologist. He served in Guam, San Diego, Puerto Rico, Adak, Alaska, and the Security Station, and Joint Chiefs in Washington D.C. After retiring from the Navy, he served 15 years for the federal government (GSA), in communications in Seneca, Kan., and Austin, Texas. After retiring he moved to Virginia Beach in 1984 and later became part owner in J & R Sharping Shop.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Alice Holmes; sister and her husband, Louise and Joe Scanlon and nephew and niece, Michael and Patty Scanlon.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne “Grab” of 57 years; daughters, Janet Grove and Karol Fenton of Virginia Beach, Kathy Alexander of Phoenix, Ariz., and Judith and Jeff Plumer of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; grandchildren, Hope Grove of Tecumsen, Neb., Miki and Doug Sanders of Phoenix, Ariz., Katie and Bryan West of Camden, N.C., and Jeremy Alexander of Illinois; and five great-grandchildren, Krysten and Tabitha Grove, Bryan Jr. and Jayson West and Jordyn Sanders.

The viewing will be at Snowden Funeral Home in Moscow, Pa., Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass will be held at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, Pa., at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Reception will follow at Community Center in Moscow. Cremation and burial will be at a later date in St. Catherine’s.

Vincent T. Hill

CHESAPEAKE - Vincent T. Hill, 95, of the 2200 block of Battery Park Road, passed away March 15, 2008, in his home.

A native of North Carolina, he was the son of the late Whitmel and Berta Hill and the widower of Mary F. Hill. He retired from Proctor & Gamble as a machine adjuster after 34 years of service. He was a member of Cradock United Methodist Church, the Deep Creek Ruritan Club and the American Legion. He was a World War II veteran.

He is survived by two daughters, Anne H. Stewart and her husband Clifton and Jean H. Reilly and her husband Kevin; a sister, Helen Barnes and husband Marvin; six grandchildren, Wendy S. McMillan and husband Steve, Adam Stewart, Michael Stewart, Summer Stewart, Shannon Reilly and Colin Reilly; and three great-grandchildren, Teague Stewart, Aidan McMillan and Bridget McMillan.

A funeral will be conducted today at 3 p.m. in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Karen Whitehurst officiating. Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Larry J. Sites

SUFFOLK - Larry James Sites, 59, passed away March 14, 2008, at his home in Suffolk. He had been a resident of the beautiful Tidewater region of Virginia for the past 30 years. He was born July 21, 1948, in Gettysburg, Pa., and was raised in Fairfield, Pa. He was the son of Ivan C. and Hazel I. Sites of Fairfield. He had two brothers and a sister, Robert Sites (died in 1952), Janet Hill of Bremen, Ohio, and Thomas Sites of Mount Hope, Pa. At the time of his passing, he was employed as a construction inspector with the City of Norfolk.

He is survived by his loving, devoted wife Susan of Suffolk, his sister and brother, 11 nieces and nephews, 21 great-nieces and -nephews, and 11 great-great-nieces and -nephews who he loved unconditionally and who meant the world to Uncle Skip and Aunt Sue.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. or to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, Norfolk.

Gerald H. Asbury

VIRGINIA BEACH - Gerald H. Asbury, 60, of the 4700 block of Brompton Drive, passed away March 16, 2008, in Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

A native of Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas and Maude Asbury. He retired from the United States Navy after 26 years and also retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Norfolk. He belonged to the Harley Owner’s Group.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia L. Asbury; two daughters, Catrina Schnurstein and husband David of Grand Rapids, Mich. and Melisa A. Cox and her fiancé James Barry of Virginia Beach; a grandson, Nathanial Cox of Virginia Beach; and a sister, Geraldine Taylor of Roanoke, Va.

A memorial service will be conducted Thursday at 4 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. The family will greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Charles R. Hauck

VIRGINIA BEACH - Charles R. Hauck, of Virginia Beach and formerly of Southern Shores, N.C. and West Chester, Pa., died March 14, 2008, at Sentara Bayside Hospital in Virginia Beach after a short illness. He is survived his wife, Joan Rood Hauck, his wife of 20 years and was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce Robinson Hauck, who died in 1987. Mr. Hauck was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa. and was the son of Dr. Charles and Genevieve Hauck.

He graduated from Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School and the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Hauck was also a veteran of the United States Navy. Beginning with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Mr. Hauck spent his entire career in sales until his retirement in 1981 from Phillips Petroleum. After honeymooning there in 1951, Mr. Hauck and his first wife returned to the Outer Banks of North Carolina with their children in the early 1960s for what would become an annual vacation destination. Upon retirement, Mr. Hauck made Southern Shores his home until moving to Virginia Beach in 2005. Enjoying time with neighbors in Southern Shores and travel with his wife kept Mr. Hauck busy during retirement. He enjoyed extended stays on the Gulf Coast of Florida and was particularly fond of the coast of Portugal. Despite spending countless hours on the old Kitty Hawk Pier, Mr. Hauck’s lack of success as a fisherman had become legend with his family. Mr. Hauck practiced his Catholic faith at Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church in Kill Devil Hills and St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Virginia Beach.

He is survived by his six children, Janet (Steve) Mitchell-Lott of Concord N.C., Katherine (Daniel) Morse of Waukesha, Wis., Charles (Patricia) of West Chester, Pa., Elizabeth (Don) Switzer of Spencerville Ind., Dr. Claudia (Christopher) Daly of Greenville, N.C. and Suzanna (Keith) Wall of Charlotte N.C. Mr. Hauck also is survived by his wife’s two daughters, Jennifer Rood (Christopher) of Manchester, N.H. and Elisabeth Fetting (Russell) of Frederick Md. Also surviving are two sisters, Eleanor Burton of Albuquerque, N.M. and Theogene Kulzer of Nashville Tenn. Three other sisters predeceased Mr. Hauck, Genevieve McMunn, Rosemary Voigt and Ruth Hauck. Mr. Hauck also is also survived by 15 grandchildren, one greatgrandchild and 20 nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. Cremation Society of Virginia, Virginia Beach, is assisting the family.

Wilbert A. Snider

NORFOLK - Wilbert Allen “Al” Snider, 91, a native of Grafton, W.Va., passed away March 18, 2008.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Louise C. Snider; along with his son, Richard of Mechanicsville; his daughter, Patricia Yarus of Buena Vista; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Clarence C. Mason

SUFFOLK - Clarence C. “Clayton” Mason, 83, of W. Constance Road, passed away March 18, 2008.

Born in Buena Vista, Va., he was the son of the late Otey and Louella (Tolley) Mason. A proud United States Army veteran, he served during World War II. A retired meat cutter with Food Lion Stores, he attended Suffolk Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Grace Wilson Mason; three sons Randy W. Mason of Suffolk, Dennis H. Mason and wife Janie of Huntington, W.Va., and Nathan C. Mason and wife Kathy of Smithfield, N.C.; one brother, James O. Mason and wife, Margaret of Waynesboro Va.; nine grandchildren, Kris Mason and wife Samantha, Kira Williamson and husband Craig Kinsey Mason, Jordan Mason Heather Wiggins and husband Scott, John Mason, Robyn Harper and husband Matt, Kaye Dabney and Nathan E. Mason and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell & Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. Don Milner. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Roland L. Wyatt

SUFFOLK - Roland L. Wyatt of the 1100 block of E. Washington St., entered into eternal rest March 14, 2008, in Sentara Obici Hospital.

Mr. Wyatt was born Feb. 3, 1926 in Sussex County to the late Hazel L. Wyatt and Merlin D. Wyatt.

He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of First Baptist Church, Waverly, where he served as superintendent of the Sunday School for many years.

He attended Sussex Central Training School, following active military service for the United States Army during World War II. He graduated from Virginia State University School of Petersburg. He also graduated from McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science in 1969.

In 1970 he founded Wyatt Funeral Home in Suffolk. In 1991 he became the president of Wyatt & Sons Funeral Home in Suffolk.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Conrad H. Wyatt and Dr. Bryant N. Wyatt; and one sister, Merilyn Wyatt.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 40 years, Cornelia H. Wyatt; two sons, Roland V. Wyatt (Delicia) and Merlin L.C. Wyatt, both of Suffolk; two brothers, Armand C. Wyatt (Thelma) of Waverly and Dr. Vell R. Wyatt M.D. of San Diego, Calif.; one granddaughter, Natasha Blunt; two brothers-in-law, Paul Howard Jr. (Lilly) and John H. Howard (Mable), both of Portsmouth; three sisters-in-law, Vivian Stanley of Brooklyn, N.Y., Noami H. Bethea (Robert) of Chesapeake and Virginia Thompson of Norfolk; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral will be held at noon Friday in First Baptist Church, Waverly, with the Rev. Samuel Robinson, eulogist. Burial will follow in Waverly Cemetery.

Paying of last respect will be held at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Family and friends will assemble at Wyatt & Sons Funeral Home Inc. for procession at 10:30 a.m. the day of service. His remains will be placed in the church one hour prior to service.

Joseph W. Lemieux

VIRGINIA BEACH - Joseph Wilfred Lemieux, formerly of Sanford, N.C., died March 16, 2008 after a short illness at the age of 86. He was born in Woonsocket, R.I., on Sept. 30, 1921 to Wilfred and Emilia Lemieux.

His first wife, Germaine Bessette; second wife, Edna Cook; and daughter, Marie Paul, predeceased him. He was also preceded in death by brother, Wilbrod Lemieux, and sister, Violette Anselmo.

Mr. Lemieux retired with the rank of major from the United States Army after 23 years of service. He served during World War II and the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient. He continued his public service for an additional 20 years with the North Carolina State Employment Commission.

After retirement, Mr. Lemieux became an avid golfer, scoring two holes-in-one on the Sanford Golf Course. He also traveled extensively.

Mr. Lemieux is survived by daughters, Jo Ann Lisk (Steve) of Virginia Beach and Patricia Turner (Wayne) of Newport, N.C. He is also survived by grandchildren, Jeffrey Lisk, Denise Harris, Johnny Barnes, Brian Paul, Sharon Carroll, and Erin Raney and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Miller-Boles Funeral Home, Sanford, with Father Steven Carlson officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to the Virginia Beach General Hospital Cardiac Care Unit as well as the entire staff at Seaside Health Center at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community. Audrey M. Trautman

VIRGINIA BEACH - Audrey M. Trautman, 74, passed away March 16, 2008, at her home.

Born in Pittsburgh in 1933, Audrey served as a store manager for 7-Eleven stores for many years. Following her retirement, she continued to work with Lifetouch Studios. Throughout her life she proudly volunteered her services as a poll worker with the Supervisor of Elections for the state of Virginia.

She is survived by her loving family which includes five children, Maj. Gen. George Trautman and his wife Zoe of Burke, Va., Susan Trautman Sori and her husband Phillip of Coconut Creek, Fla., Carrie Beethoven and her husband Craig, James Trautman of Virginia and Dan Copeland and his wife Dana of Arkansas; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Audrey is also survived by many loving and caring friends including Mary Butts and Renee Ferguson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with a reception to follow at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Lena O. Arnold

GLOUCESTER - Lena O. Arnold, 86, of the 7500 block of Founders Mill Way East, passed away March 17, 2008, in Newport News.

A native of Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late George and Lena Odabashian and the widow of Wayne E. Arnold.

She is survived by two sons, Howard P. Arnett of Warner Robbins, Ga. and George Lee Arnett of Gloucester, Va.; five grandchildren, Howard P. Arnett Jr., Christopher Arnett, George Lee Arnett Jr., Dawn Marie Arnett and Lisa Marie Arnett and several great-grandchildren.

A service will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel in Suffolk. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
