Gilbert H. Shipman
VIRGINIA BEACH - Gilbert H. Shipman, 70, passed away Jan. 18, 2008.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Shipman retired from the U.S. Navy as a senior chief petty officer after 22 years of service. He also retired from Lucent Technologies, formerly AT&T and Western Electric as a logistics specialist.
Survivors include his loving wife of 39 years, Janet M. Shipman; a daughter, Jennifer G. Shipman; his mother-in-law, Margaret H. MacLean; one brother and three sisters.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 730 p.m. in Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home.
A celebration of Gil’s life will be held at 1130 a.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Robert F. Pittman III in Holland Road Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park and a reception will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to H.R.B.C. Building Fund or Endowment Fund.

Robert J. Hendrix Jr.
HOBBSVILLE - Robert John Hendrix Jr., 84, of 732 Hobbsville Road, died Jan. 20, 2008, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk.
Mr. Hendrix was born in Gates County and was the son of the late Robert J. “Bob” and Lizzie Riddick Hendrick. He was a retired farmer and a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Andy R. Hendrix.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Hobbs Hendrix; a daughter, Cindy H. Knight and husband R.V. of Suffolk; four grandchildren, Ryan and Amber Hendrix, Christopher Knight and wife Rebecca and Matthew Knight and wife Becky; and one great-grandson, Tyler Knight; one daughter-in-law, Diane R. Hendrix of Eure; and two sisters, Frances Bazemore of Corapeake and Juanita Trotman of Hobbsville.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Revs. Vern Gilmer and Gene Asbill. Friends may join the family at the home, 732 Hobbsville Road, Hobbsville.
Arrangements are being handled by Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville.

Bill Mol
AYDLETT - “There was a star danced” and under that Bill Mol was born Feb. 1, 1919. On Jan. 20, 2008, he left his earthly family to be with the Lord.
He was the beloved husband for 65 years to Lucille (Gray) Mol. He was the dear and loving father of five children, William Mol Jr. and wife Paige, James Mol and wife Nancy, Charlotte Mol Neal and husband Barry, Glenda Mol Dexter and husband Tom and Patti Mol Roma and husband David. His grandchildren are William Mol III, James Mol Jr., Gretchen Mol Williams, Gregory and Joshua Neal, Katie Dexter, Heather and Nicholas Roma. His great-grandchildren are William Mol IV, Parker Mol, Savannah Neal and Ptolemy Williams. He is also survived by his brother, George and wife Marge and many extended family members and friends.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard and civil service for 40 years and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. A longstanding member of Duck Woods United Methodist Church, he was also a 32nd Degree Mason, a former volunteer fireman III at Duck Woods Fire Department and a 30-year member at Duck Woods Country Club. He loved golfing and travelling and most recently since his move to Currituck Sound, bird watching. But, the greatest times of his life were spent planning trips and going on adventures with his dear wife and best friend, Lucille.
A memorial service will be held at Duck Woods United Methodist Church with Pastor Ray Wittman officiating Thursday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made to Duck Woods Fire Department or Duck Woods United Methodist Church. A private family burial service will be held at the family cemetery in Buxton. Twiford’s Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, is handling arrangements.

Randolph B. Starke
CAPRON - Randolph Bryant Starke, 81, died Jan. 21, 2008. Born in Sussex County, he was the last of 11 children of the late Joseph T. and Betty Mae Avent Starke. An Army veteran of World War II and Korea, Randolph was retired from the Virginia Department of Corrections with 31 years of service and was a member of Capron Baptist Church.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Diane Ward Starke; two daughters, Betsy L. Cook and husband Donnie and Bonnie S. Newsome and husband Steve; one son, David A. Starke; three grandchildren, Kenneth Waugh, Katelyn Newsome and Christopher Newsome; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Capron Baptist Church with the Rev. Chad Brady officiating. Burial will follow in Capron Cemetery. Mary Russell Barnes
ACCOMAC - Mary Russell Barnes, 96, wife of the late Paul G. Barnes, passed away at her home in Accomac Jan. 21, 2008.
Born Oct. 8, 1912, in Greenbush, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Franklin Russell and Eva Catherine Moore Russell.
Mrs. Barnes was a faithful member of Greenbush United Methodist Church, an active member of the Accomack County Woman’s Club and a charter member of Onancock Chapter No. 82, Order of the Eastern Star. She was affiliated with the Whispering Pines Motel, built by her father, Charles Russell, in 1931. The motel was managed by Mary, her sister Juanita “Nita” and their husbands, Paul Barnes and Albert Dobson, until they retired in the late 1960s. The motel was sold in 1973.
Survivors include her daughter, Caroline Barnes Lewis and husband Woodie of Accomac; two grandchildren, Marcia Weir and husband Steve and Kevin Lewis and wife Melissa; five great-grandchildren, Karen Weir Smith and husband Kirk, Travis Weir, Chelsea and Kevin Lewis and Roy Cramer; one great-great-granddaughter,
Macey Elizabeth Smith; and 11 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three brothers, Charles Hayden Russell, Bernard F. Russell and C. Brooks Russell; three sisters, Juanita Dobson, Irene Justis and Elaine Brashears Elliott; and a niece, Carol Lyn Russell.
A funeral will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William Jefferson officiating. Private interment will follow at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock, Va.

John N. Cradle
NEWPORT NEWS - On Jan. 21, 2008, John Nelson Cradle, 81, peacefully departed this life at home. He was a native of Scranton, N.C., and a longtime resident of Chesapeake. He was the son of the late Fate and Molly Cradle and the devoted husband of the late Velma Moore Cradle.
John received his early education in the Scranton public school system. He also earned a certificate in automotive technology from then Norfolk State College. John stressed the importance of education and demonstrated a strong work ethic through his more than 50 years of service with the United States Navy as a sailor and with the U.S. Naval Public Works Center at the Norfolk Naval Base as a tractor trailer driver and foreman. He was civic minded and spent his early years coaching a girl’s softball team and serving in leadership roles with the Crestwood Civic League and PTA. John was also a Mason.
Prior to his illness, he was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served on the Male Usher Board and with the Social Services Department.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his two sons, Garland Moore (Linda) of Grants, N.M., and Rickey Cradle of Collierville, Tenn.; four daughters, Gloria Taylor of Newport News, Johnnie Mae Parker (Joseph) of Reston, Va., Valerie C. Cuffee (Rubin) of Centreville, Va., and Rosalyn Towns (Karl) of Erial, N.J.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Hattie Gamble of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 525 Dinwiddie St. Interment will be at noon Saturday in Saint Ana Cemetery, Blounts Creek, N.C. Family and friends will assemble at 122 Wreck Shoal Drive one hour prior to service for procession to the church. Madge G. Scott
FRANKLIN - Madge Goodson Scott, 92, widow of Billy Michael “Bill” Scott, died Jan. 20, 2008, in Chesterfield. She was born in Bluefield, W.Va., a daughter of the late Ernest Marvin and Ada Martin Goodson. A local artist and member of Blackwater Art League, Madge was especially known for her hummingbird pictures. She was a member of High Street United Methodist Church and the Southampton County Historical Society.
A wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Judy S. Powell and husband Braxton of Chesterfield; two sons, Billy Madison Scott and wife Judy of Charlotte, N.C., and Col. Richard Michael Scott, retired, U.S. Army, and wife Linda of Green Valley, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Westhampton Memorial Park, Richmond, with the Rev. Edward Johnson officiating. Evelyn T. Goff
WINCHESTER - Evelyn Irene Taylor Goff, 93, went to be with the Lord Jan. 20, 2008, in Winchester. She was born May 30, 1914, in Randolph County, West Virginia, and was the daughter of the late Albert Deli and Ada Bell Moore Taylor. She was preceded in death Aug. 18, 1985, by her husband, Thomas Edison Eugene Goff.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Faye Goff Janowitz and her husband Martin of Winchester; a sister, Maxine Cox and her husband Leroy of Virginia Beach; four nieces, Sue Anne Davis, Linda Davenport, Betty Ann Murray and Janet L. Hardesty and their husbands and children; and three nephews, Robert Jakeway and his wife Retha, Michael and Terry Pride.

Burdeal Harold Fisher
CHESAPEAKE - Burdeal Harold “Birdie” Fisher, 85, passed away Jan. 21, 2008, in Portsmouth. She was born in Uler, W.Va., and retired from Leggett department stores. She was the widow of Scott H. Fisher.
She is survived by two sons, Danny Fisher and wife Donna of Roanoke, Va., and Steve Fisher of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Kimberly Fisher Coleman and husband Johnny, Stephanie Fisher, Callie Fisher, Hannah Fisher and Kayla Fisher.

Benita C. Butler
SUFFOLK - Benita Comer Butler, 92, went to be with the Lord Jan. 19, 2008.
Mrs. Butler, a native of Fayette County, West Virginia, was the widow of John W. “Jack” Butler. She retired in 1976 as a civilian employee of the Naval Regional Medical Center, Portsmouth. She was predeceased by her three brothers and a sister.
Survivors include her daughter, Patti A. Stevens and husband Steve of Virginia Beach; son, John W. Butler Jr. and wife Linda of Raleigh, N.C.; sister-in-law, Delores Johnson of Portsmouth; former son-in-law, Thomas A. Perry Sr. and wife Colleen and daughter Brooke of Suffolk; seven grandchildren, Thomas A. Perry Jr. and wife Julie of Virginia Beach, Robyn B. Perry of Alexandria, Va., John W. Butler III and wife Cindy of Richmond, Benita E. Rogers and husband Ed of Chesapeake, Michael R. Butler of Raleigh, N.C., Stephenie A. Butler of Raleigh and Ashley A. Crutchfield and husband Sam of Raleigh; 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bessie M. Henry
KILL DEVIL HILLS - Bessie Minerva Henry, 99, formerly of Fairmont, W.Va., died Jan. 22, 2008, at Sentara Nursing Center, Currituck. Born in Hempfield Township, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Anthony Henry and the widow of Luther M. Henry. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Esta Mae Sadler and a brother, Herbert Henry. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church By the Sea in Nags Head, N.C.
Mrs. Henry is survived by a daughter, June Donham of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; a son, Jack Henry of Kill Devil Hills; four grandchildren, Jeff A. Henry, Christopher J. Henry, Kimberly J. Henry and Julia P. Manning; and 10 great-grandchildren.
