Ethel Richards Saye, 100, of 315 University Circle, died August 4, 2001.
A lifelong resident of Athens, Mrs. Saye was a daughter of the late Alie and Lola Fleeman Richards and the widow of Joe A. Saye, Jr. She was preceded in death by two sons, Harold Saye and Howell Saye and one daughter, Joan Saye. She was a member of Oconee Street United Methodist Church since she was a teenager.
Services were Tueday, Auggust 7, 2001 at Oconee Street United Methodist Church with Revs. Clifton Barrett and Carolyn Morris officiating. Interment was in Oconee Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Martha S. Malinowski of Athens; 3 sons, Richard W. Saye of Athens, Charles A. Saye, Sr. of Roswell and Harry H. Saye, Sr. of Birmingham, AL; sister, Hazel R. Yarbrough of Athens; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Richard Saye

Richard W. Saye, 78, died June 3, 2002.
A native and lifelong resident of Athens, he was a son of the late Joe A., Jr. and Ethel Richards Saye. A graduate of Athens High School, he was employed with Georgia Power for 18 years. He then received his Bachelors of Education and Masters of Education from the University of Georgia and began teaching and coaching at Athens and Clarke Central High Schools. He was football coach of Athens High 1969 State Championship and was retired as vice principal from Cedar Shoals High School. Mr. Saye was a Little League coach and umpire for a number of years. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and IBEW. He served in the Athens Civil Service Commission from 1964 - 1974, representing the first ward. He was a member of Young Harris United Methodist Church and attended Oconee Street United Methodist Church.
Services were Thursday, June 5, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with Revs. Carolyn Morris and Lisa Cain officiating. Interment was in Oconee Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include a sister, Martha Malinowski of Athens; 2 brothers, Charles A. Saye, Sr. of Roswell and Harry H. Saye of Birmingham, AL; 5 nieces, 5 nephews and six great nieces and nephews.

Dessie Mae Seagraves

Dessie Mae Williams Seagraves, 93, died December 27, 2001.
A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Will H. and Rosa Lee Dixon Martin, widow of James Roy Seagraves, Sr. and preceded in death by a son, Halford Seagraves. Mrs. Seagraves was retired from Chicopee Mills and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Sunday, December 30, 2001 at 3:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with Revs. Elmer Butler, Dayton Logan and Dr. Virgil Edwards officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemtery.

Jennie Ree Seagraves, 85, died August 27, 2002.
A lifelong resident of Clarke County, she was a daughter of the late Robert H. and Clyde Collier Benedict. She was the widow of William Robert Seagraves and preceded in death by a daughter, Hazel Cartey.

A native of Oconee County, he was a son of Lois McDaniel Shelton of Bogart and the late Douglas Shelton.

Methie Callaway Carter Shelnut, 80, died October 28, 2001.
A native of Union County, GA, she was a daughter of the late Jim C. and Ella Helton Callaway and preceded in death by her first husband, C.T. Carter, Jr. A longtime resident of Oglethorpe County, she was a member of Grove Chapel Congregational Holiness Church.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at 2:00 PM at Grove Chapel Congregational Holiness Church with Revs. Raymond Duncan, Mark Palmer and Burton Campbell officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Audrey Philmon Sheffield, 78, of Bogart, died February 5, 2002.
A native of Early County, GA, she was a daughter of the late Jesse George and Lizzie McGlamory Philmon and widow of Joe M. Sheffield. Mrs. Sheffield was a former resident of Mulberry and Lakeland FL and had made her home in this area since 1965. She was retired from Eckerd Drug Company in Homewood Hills Shopping Center. Mrs. Sheffield was a member of Oconee Heights Baptist Church and attended Beech Haven Baptist Church.

A native and lifelong resident of Clarke County, she was the daughter of the late Clifford M. and Susan Fulcher Waters. She was a member of Green Acres Garden Club, Princeton United Methodist Church and the Princeton Women's Society.

Jane S. Smith, 82, died January 4, 2002.
A native of Heber Springs, AK, she was a daughter of the late Dempsey Edward and Alva Leona Bledsoe Steely and widow of Troy Lawrence Smith. Known for her generous hospitality, she was a longtime resident of Calico Rock, AK, where she was a retired school teacher with Calico Rock Public School System. She was a member of Calico Rock First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Mrs. Smith moved to Athens three years ago and attended St. James United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 7, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Calico Rock First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.

Malcolm F. Steuer
1928 - 2002

Malcolm Finn Steuer, 73, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002.
A native of Marion, SC, Dr. Steuer was a son of Carribel Steuer and the late Rudolph R. Steuer. He received his B.S. from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1950 and his Ph.D. from UVA in 1957. He was a member of the UGA Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1958 until his retirement as Emeritus Professor in 1995 and was the motivating force behind the acquisition and upgrade of the Van de Graaff particle accelerator. In later years, he helped modernize undergraduate physics instruction.
Survivors in addition to his mother, include his wife, Carolyn Steuer; 3 sons, Max Steuer, M.D., Atlanta, Eric Steuer, M.D. Ph.D., St. Paul, and Karl Steuer, Baton Rouge; sister, Carri Ender, Annapolis; 2 brothers, R.R. Steuer, Jr., M.D., Gaffney, SC and William Steuer, Wilmington, NC; and 7 grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:00 PM Friday at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with the Rev. James Bowden officiating. The family will receive friends afterwards at Lord and Stephens and them at home, 4245 Barnett Shoals Road. The family requests no flowers.

A native and lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County, he was a son of the late Grady A. and Corine Barnett Stewart. He was retired from Oliver Rubber Company with 31 years of service and was a WW II veteran of the Army Air Corps. He was a member of Winterville 1st Baptist Church.

Margaret Stokely

Margaret Northington Stokely, 79, died May 13, 2001.
Born in Tennille, GA, she was a graduate of Tennille High School and received her undergraduate degree in Nutrition from the University of Georgia and her graduate degrees in Nutrition and Education from Columbia University in New York. During WWII, she served in the US Army in the European Theater of Operations as a dietician in hospitals in Rheims and Marseilles, France. Following her marriage to Meral F. Stokely in 1949, she lived in the Washington D.C. area, where she taught in the Montgomery County, Maryland schools and worked as a nutritionist for the D.C. Dept of Human Resources. After retirement in 1977, the couple moved to Stone Mountain, GA where they lived until his death in 1999. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Decatur.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and William W. Zamula of Potomac, MD and their children, Margaret Ann and William Stokely Zamula; her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Ellen Stokely of Marietta, GA and their children, Richard Charles and James Roberts Stokely; her brother, Robert P. Northington of Tennille, GA; her sister, Jane Franklin of Atlanta, GA; and several belooved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 17, at 1:30PM at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home in Crawford, GA. The graveside service will follow at 3:00 at Crawford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of the giver's choice.

Richard F. Strader, 81, formerly of Jacksonville, FL and a resident of Talmadge Terrace, Athens, died December 27, 2001.
A native of Canton, OH, he was a son of the late Howard and Mary McCleary Strader and widower of Ruby Sovero Strader. He was retired Production Control Supervisor with Diebold and a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Strader attended Central Presbyterian Church in Athens.
Funeral services will be Saturday, December 29, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Central Presbyterian Church with Brian Williams officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Massillon, OH.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Ricki Strader of Athens and P.J. Betty Hickam Strong, 59, died March 2, 2002.
A native of Kingsport, TN, she was the daughter of Dorothy Smith Hickam of Athens and the late Samuel Hickam. She attended East Tennessee State University and made her home in Athens since 1972. Mrs. Strong was RSVP Coordinator for Athens Community Council on Aging.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at 10:30 AM at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Following the services, a memorial luncheon will be held at Athens Community Council on Aging, 135 Hoyt Street, beginning at 12:00 Noon.

Katharine Rose Sudekum, 49, died May 27, 2001, in Athens, GA
A native of Plainfield, NJ, and longtime resident of Bloomsbury, NJ, she was a daughter of Lothar and Violet Sudekum, presently of Grand Rapids, MI.
Katharine was a 1974 graduate of Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA, with a degree in Music, and a 1985 graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, with a Master's degree in Library Science. During her career, she worked for several library automation companies and retired from Follett Software Company in February, 2001. Katharine was a hot air balloon pilot and an ailurophile. She was an exceptional friend whose friendships spanned the nation.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at the family farm in Bloomsbury, NJ.
