Paul Guy Boisvert
Services will be Saturday for Paul Guy Boisvert who died Tuesday at a local hospital. He was 74.
He was born in St. Jean, Quebec, Canada. He grew up in Windsor, Canada, where he graduated from Assumption College. Paul earned his teaching credential at Long Beach State College. He was a school teacher for many years while living in Southern California. He retired from East Middle School in Downey. After moving to Santa Cruz in 1986 he worked for the Community Counseling Center in its transition house.
He was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Mr. Boisvert was active in politics and was an ardent supporter of democratic principles. He did extensive missionary work bringing aid to the people of Baja.
His survivors include his wife of 50 years, Traude Boisvert of Santa Cruz; sons Mark Boisvert of Napa and Joel Boisvert of Santa Cruz; daughter Karen Schick of Big Bear Lake; sister Suzanne Wellington of Canada; and nine grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church 515 Frederick St., Santa Cruz.
Arrangements are by Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz.

Mary Jeanne Guldborg
No services are planned for Mary Jeanne Guldborg, who died Wednesday at home of natural causes. She was 84.
A native of Miles City, Mont., she had lived in Santa Cruz County for 25 years. She had a great love for her home, her family and her children.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert Guldborg; son Richard Guldborg of Aptos; daughter Patricia Wall of Aptos; brother Robert Cooper of Redding; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel. Burial will be private.

Donald R. Schroedel
A memorial service will be Sunday for Donald R. Schroedel, a longtime Capitola resident who died Friday. He was 81.
Born in Meadville, Pa., he served his country during World War II in the Army Corps of Engineers, participating in the Normandy invasion. After attending college in Indiana, he moved to San Jose, where he worked for many years as a draftsman for the Goushe Map Co. He then worked in sales for Ted Stevens Pontiac and Los Gatos Acura.
In the 1970s, he moved to Capitola to be near his children. After he retired, he enjoyed having lunch at one of his favorite restaurants, then walking along the Seacliff Beach promenade.
He was a talented and dedicated artist. He loved to fish in the San Lorenzo River. And he never missed an opportunity to spend time with his children.
He is survived by son Doug Schroedel of Santa Cruz; daughter Kim Henderson of Idaho; stepsons Phil Ingram of Santa Cruz and Eric Ingram of Idaho; stepdaughters Sue Brannan of Idaho, and Lori Shelton of Santa Cruz; sister Ruth Comer of San Jose; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Memorial Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz.
Burial will be private.
Paul ‘PJ’ Zima
A memorial service will be Sunday for Paul "PJ" Zima, who died of leukemia Wednesday at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. He was 56.
Born in Chicago, he earned a degree in computer science from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1970 and made significant contributions to the early days of computing.
He developed operating system software for the Illiac IV super-computer and was recruited by John Warnock, later the co-founder of Adobe Systems, to join Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp. There, he developed a New York Harbor simulator for the U.S. Maritime Academy and training simulators for NASA space shuttle missions. He also contributed to the development of a graphics language that was later developed into Adobe Systems PostScript page description language.
In the 1980s, he worked as an independent consultant, primarily for Gould Imaging Systems and DeAnza Systems, specializing in high-performance computer image display systems. He also did work on MindLink, a pioneering time-sharing device.
In 1990, he joined Adobe Systems, developing PostScript printers. He co-founded MessageRx.com, a secure computer messaging service in the late 1990s.
A sports car enthusiastic, he had an MGA in high school. Later he favored Volvo P1800s and Porsche 356 models. He was an active member of the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Porsche Club of America and a member of the Cactus and Succulent Society of San Jose.
He enjoyed fine wines and cooking, particularly Chinese cuisine and often shared his gourmet creations with his friends at his home in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
He is survived by wife Denie B. Albert of Los Gatos and brother George Zima of Peoria, Ill.

Rochelle Ann Mendez
Services will be later for Rochelle Ann Mendez, who died Thursday in Aptos after a long battle with cancer. She was 57.
A native of Santa Cruz, she was known for her love of animals, arts and crafts and gardening. She was passionate about Christmas, which she celebrated year-round.
She also was a member of Best Friends Animal Rescue. Nick, a Rottweiler, was her faithful companion.
She is survived by her husband of 18 years, Dave Mendez of Aptos; daughters Pamela Crum of Soquel, and Michelle Williams, Susan Setser and Melody Posey, all of Medford, Ore.; mother Lillian Phillips of Scotts Valley; brother Bill Hudson of Scotts Valley; sister Jan Rush of Nevada City; and 10 grandchildren.
Private services will be later. Arrangements are by Oakwood Memorial Chapel.

William ‘Bill’ Friend
A memorial service will be Tuesday for William "Bill" Friend, a former Watsonville resident who died Wednesday at his home in Idaho after a short illness. He was 56.
Born in Watsonville, he graduated from Watsonville High School in 1964. As a youth, he enjoyed working on the family ranch, raising and showing cattle. He was active in DeMolay, where he served as master counselor. He attended Cabrillo College and earned a degree from UC Davis in political studies. He served four years in the Air Force, where he attended language school and became fluent in North Vietnamese. He then earned a master’s degree from the University of Oregon in labor negotiations and personnel administration.
He worked for the San Joaquin County Employee Association as a labor negotiator, then was hired by Occidental Chemical Co. in Lathrop. When J.R. Simplot Co. bought the plant, Mr. Friend was transferred to the corporate office in Boise where he worked 20 years in various management capacities. He was vice president of supply chain management for the food division when he retired from J.R. Simplot in 2000. After retirement, he did consulting work from his home.
He was a gourmet cook, avid gardener and amateur photographer. He loved to travel, ski, golf, flyfish and play water basketball with his childhood friend Ken Johnson. A man of strong faith, he devoted much time to church service.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Jones, daughter Megan Friend, and stepdaughter Amy Jones, all of Boise; his parents, Shirley and Gene Friend of Watsonville; sister Kathy Banks of Watsonville; grandmother Grace Friend of Watsonville; great-aunt Ruth Potter of Watsonville; two nephews, an uncle and several cousins.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of the Rockies First United Methodist Church, 1110 W. Franklin St., Boise, Idaho. A reception will follow.

Brian J. Krilanovich
A memorial service will be Friday for Brian John Krilanovich, a well-known local musician who died suddenly in Castroville Wednesday. He was 43.
Born in Santa Cruz, he loved playing music with family and friends.
He started playing classical violin as a second-grader under the guidance of his brother-in-law, music teacher Gary Fredrick. Later, he became a member of the Santa Cruz Youth Symphony. As an adult, he was a member of Crawdaddy, a Cajun-Zydeco band, for seven years, playing the fiddle.
He and his wife, Debi, enjoyed playing as guests with the Bluesbox Band from the Central Valley and with Tom Rigney and Flambeau. The couple recently served together on the worship team at The Coastlands Church.
They often drove to the Modesto area to visit Debi’s parents, Wally and Tiny Limas.
Besides his musical interests, Mr. Krilanovich loved golfing, camping, kayaking, flyfishing, sailing, bird-watching and cooking. He enjoyed working for Robert Mann at Harbor Ready Mix.
His family said he will be missed for his love of life and his infectious smile.
He survived by wife Debi of Scotts Valley; daughters Brianne and Colette; son Dominic; mother Wynnifred d’Lyon Jahnigen and stepfather Dennis Jahnigen; father Royce Krilanovich and stepmother Donna Krilanovich; six sisters; eight brothers; 35 nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
His brother, Royce Ivo Krilanovich, died before him.
A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Friday at the Coastlands, Aptos Foursquare Church.
A scattering of ashes at sea will be private.
