Mildred M. Earnest
VIRGINIA BEACH - Mildred McConnell Earnest, 82, wife of Capt. Albert Kyle Earnest, U.S. Navy retired, of 1100 Buenos Aires Court, passed away at Seaside, Atlantic Shores.
She was born Dec. 10, 1923, in Pensacola, Fla., the second daughter of the late Vice Adm. Robert P. McConnell and Mildred Schaefer McConnell. She viewed her life as “born in the Navy, married in the Navy, and retired to a garden.” A homemaker, she was past president and active member of the Birdneck Point Garden Club and avid organic gardener. She had lived in Virginia Beach since 1966.
Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Albert K. Earnest; a daughter, Kathryn Lynn Earnest of Alexandria, Va.; a son, William Kyle Earnest and his wife Janet Murray Earnest and their three children, Laura Ellen, Jessie and Matthew Kyle Earnest of Virginia Beach; and a sister, Doreen McConnell Johnson and her husband Edward Beverly Johnson of Key Largo, Fla. She will be remembered for her love of family, generous and adventurous spirit and wonderful sense of humor.
A memorial service will be held in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Wednesday at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Family will receive friends at the Anchor Room, Atlantic Shores Clubhouse.

John L. Ellsworth Jr.
VIRGINIA BEACH - John Lawrence Ellsworth Jr., 37, passed away Jan. 25, 2008, in his home.
Born in Philadelphia, May 20, 1970, he was a graduate of F. W. Cox High School in 1989, where he placed in the Eastern, Regional, District and State wrestling competitions. He was a loyal employee of HSBC for the past 10 years.
John is survived by “the love of his life,” Jennifer E. Ellsworth, his wife of 15 years. He was the beloved son of John and Linda Ellsworth; grandson of Eleanor G. Corbett; and nephew of Barbara A. Murphy. He also leaves behind a sister, Susan Hernandez; brother, James Ellsworth; and his nieces and nephews, Kali, Blair, Montana, Ross and Taylor.
Jennifer and her entire family wish to thank Dr. Thomas Alberico and the staff of Virginia Oncology Associates for their continued efforts and support. Also, they wish to thank the 4th floor staff at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Thank you to all our wonderful friends and extended family for your love and support during this difficult time. We love you all.

Steven P. Goos Sr.
VIRGINIA BEACH - Steven P. Goos Sr., 52, passed away Jan. 25, 2008.
Steven was born in Fort Dix, N.J., and resided in Virginia Beach since 1992. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the 101st Airborne. His passion was being a master carpenter.
Steven was preceded in death by his father, Julius Goos; his grandmother, Myrtice Jones; and a son, Steven Goos Jr.
Survivors include his loyal and loving wife of 18 years, Ligeia K. Goos; his mother, Lillian Jones Day and her husband Edward of Virginia; a daughter, Caryn Smith and her husband Lucky of New Jersey; three grandchildren, Lucky Smith Jr., Kirsten Smith and Jenna Moneypenny; a brother, Timothy Goos of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Cathy Robles and her husband Ruben of Virginia Beach, Donna Kasprzak and her husband James of Rhode Island, Sandra Williams and her husband Tom of Arizona and Pam Acres and her late husband Doug of Virginia Beach; his mother-in-law, Helene Russ of New Jersey; several nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Kool Joe.
A celebration of Steven’s life will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.

William J. Maloney Sr.
VIRGINIA BEACH - William Joseph Maloney Sr., 81, of the 5200 block of Pleasant Hall Court, passed away Jan. 25, 2008. Mr. Maloney was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Martin and Irene Gannon Maloney. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Jacqueline Desilets Maloney; three brothers, John, Eugene and Gregory Maloney; and a son, Jeff Maloney.
Mr. Maloney retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service as a chief warrant officer. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam. He attended Ascension Catholic Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Glover and her husband John of Kalaheo, Hawaii and Debbie Lefler and her husband, Dave of Sellersburg, Ind.; three sons, William Maloney Jr. and his fiancee Sandra Bean of Virginia Beach, Brian Maloney and his wife Amanda and Keith Maloney and his wife Jill, all of Virginia Beach; a sister, Delores Roth of New Canaan, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Mary Cestaro and her husband Bill of Nanuet, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, Tara Gall and her husband Joe of New Albany, Ind., Clay Glover and his wife Ulla of Tampa, Fla., Jeremy Maloney of Virginia Beach, Shannon Maloney of Ringgold, La., Ryan Maloney, Connor Maloney and Alan Davis, all of Virginia Beach, Sean Lefler and Kristen Lefler of Sellersburg, Ind.; three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Cole Ryan and Lindsey Gall.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Christian wake at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. by Father Thomas Quinlan. Interment will follow in Colonial Grove Memorial Park.

Stafford Ruggles
VIRGINIA BEACH - Stafford St. Clair Ruggles, 86, passed away Jan. 23, 2008. Born in Ashville, Mass., he was predeceased by his parents, Henry S. and Edith M. Ruggles and his sister, Gwendolyn S. Fairfield.
Graduating in 1938 from Kempsville High School, he began working at the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard until 1942 when he joined the Navy and served with the Asiatic Pacific Fleet for three years. He then served six years with United States Coast Guard. Upon his discharge from the service, he worked at the Fleet Materials Support Office at the Norfolk Naval Base until retirement. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf at Broad Bay, however he devoted most of his time with the Eastern Shore Chapel. A member of 53 years, he served two terms as junior warden and was the superintendent for the Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery for 20 years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Murial; his son, Michael of Mobile, Ala.; his grandchildren, Andrew G. of the University of Pennsylvania and Allison S. of Charleston, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family expresses their appreciation for the care given by the staff at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church or Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery Trust Fund.
A funeral will be held Thursday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. in Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments is handling arrangements.

Clarence L. Warren
VIRGINIA BEACH - Clarence L. Warren, 68, passed away Jan. 25, 2008, in a local hospital.
Mr. Warren was a native of Norfolk, son of the late Donald and Catherine Warren. He retired from C. H. M2 Hill - Engineering Consultant Firm and was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran. His first engineering job after college was on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel which he said was hard to surpass, although he built many bridges and overpasses in the Tidewater area.
Survivors include a sister, Gloria W. Roebuck and husband Ed of Norfolk; a brother, Ronald M. Warren and wife Faye of Edinburg, Va.; a nephew, Eddie Roebuck; three nieces, Rebecca Stein, Michelle Warren and Carrie Morris; his beloved fiancee, Lida Gilley and her children, Vicki Soyars, Dennis Waterman and Candace Smith; and a host of cousins, great-nieces and -nephews.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, with Dennis Waterman officiating.
