Elvy Thomas Duncan
Elvy Thomas Duncan, 77, of Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2007, at his home.
He was born July 23, 1929, in Dixon, Ky., son of the late Gussie and Pauline (Blackston) Duncan.
Tom retired in 1990 from ADM Milling, where he was a truck driver for 24 years, and he was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the Teamsters Local No. 215, American Legion Owen Dunn Post No. 5, where he was a member for 43 years, and was past commander of the VFW No. 11364 in Mount Vernon.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Beverly A. Duncan, a sister Doris Dickerson and a brother Kenneth Duncan.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Cora Frances (Somers) Duncan of Mount Vernon; daughters, Brenda Stewart (Marce) of Mount Vernon, and Nancy Wells (Carl) of New Harmony; a son, Brent Duncan (Michele) of Mount Vernon; ten grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ann Viars, Linda Collier, Carolyn Davis, and Sue Lomax, all of Henderson, Ky.; five brothers, William D.( Marilyn) Duncan of Granite City, Ill., Gus (Pat) Duncan of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Donald (Lynda)Duncan of Henderson, Ky., Jerry (Diane) Duncan of Tennyson, Ind, and Michael (Doretha) Duncan of Owensville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service were Friday, February 23, at Schneider Funeral Home, in Mount Vernon, with Rev. Gerald Peeples officiating, burial in Bellefontaine Cemetery, with military rites.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Ira Merton Maudlin
Ira Merton Maudlin, 91, of Logansport, and the father and father-in-law of Nathan B. Maudlin and his wife, Jeanne, of New Harmony, died at 12:15 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2007, at New Harmonie Healthcare Center in New Harmony.
Born July 2, 1915, in Logansport, he was the son of George and Emma Holsinger Maudlin. He was married Sept. 1, 1940, in Logansport, to Dorothy Marcella Hardy, who preceded him in death April 29, 2000.
Mr. Maudlin was a field supervisor for Davey Tree Company from the late 1930s to 1948 in Lancaster, Ohio. He then returned to Bethlehem Township to farm and sell cleaning services for Maiben’s Dry Cleaners in Logansport until 1971. He was appointed Regional Manager (Northwest) for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for 10 years.
A 1933 graduate of Metea High School, he attended the Matriculated Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill.
He was an elder, trustee, Sunday school teacher and member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. He also was a member of Tipton Masonic Lodge No. 33 F&AM, Ohio York Rite in Lancaster, Ohio, and Toastmaster’s. He was a former Bethlehem Township Republican Precinct committeeman.
Mert loved his family, the church and the Republican Party. He regularly attended daily coffee/current events meetings around Cass County.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh.
He is survived also by sons, Ray Merton Maudlin and his wife, Sheryll, of Jacksonville, Fla., Mark Hardy Maudlin and his wife, Mary Sue, of Fort Wayne, John Alan Maudlin and his wife, Ellen, of Lake Mary, Fla.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
One sister, Margaret Carr, preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, in Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, Pastor Jay Cline officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

James Lee Miley
James Lee Miley, 38, of Wadesville, formerly of Francisco, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2007, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
He was born on Feb. 15, 1969, in Princeton.
Jimmie Lee, as he was called by friends, was a CNA at the Columbia Health Care in Evansville. He graduated from Kearsley High School in Flint, Mich. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is preceded in death by a brother, Lesley Dean Miley, in 1990.
James is survived by his life partner, Jackie Lee Cherry of Wadesville; mother, Priscilla (Buck) Bridges of Poseyville; two brothers, Ronald K. Miley of Griffin and Verdain E. Miley of Davison, Mich.; one sister, Paula Patten of Lawrenceville, Ill.; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and two great-nieces and one great-nephew.
Funeral services were Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City. Burial was at the Providence Cemetery in Francisco.
James Virgil Keith
James "Virgil" Keith, 79, of Tell City, and the father of James Keith, Jr., of Mount Vernon, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at his home.
He was born in Boonville on Jan. 27, 1928, Virgil was a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union. He was a member of the VFW Post 2939, which will provide graveside military service. A member of the Beulah Masonic Lodge 578 from Mount Vernon Ind., will provide a service 7 p.m. Thursday.
Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Caddell of Holly Hills, S.C., and Sara Kellems of Tell City, Ind.; son Joseph Keith of Newburgh, Ind.; ten grandchildren, Jim, Justin, Jeremy, MaLinda, John, Amber, Henry, Aleshia, Matthew and Donna; and two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Kylee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelma (Kessans) Keith in 2001, parents, James V. Keith Sr. and Sarah (Elder) Keith, and brothers, Walter, William, Arnold, Richard, Kenneth and Joseph James.
Funeral services were Friday, February 23, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home, the Rev. Dale Phillips will officiate, burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
John E. Huber
John E. Huber, 87, of Evansville, and the father and father-in-law of Jason Huber and his wife, LaDonna, of St. Philip, died at 1 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at Angel River Health and Rehabilitation.
John was born on Oct. 3, 1919, to very loving parents Louise and William Huber. He attended Caze Elementary and Bosse High School. John joined the United States Navy during World War II and served for six years.
He was a 60-year member of Union United Church of Christ and in later years a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ on Washington Avenue.
He is survived also by two daughters, Janet Duncan and her husband, Pat, of Evansville and Judy Peters and her husband, Tim, of Evansville; son, Jeff Huber and his life companion, Wanda Farmer, of Evansville; six grandsons, Jeff Duncan and his wife, Amy, of Keller, Texas; Doug Duncan and his wife, Krystal, of Evansville; John "Jacob" Huber, of Evansville, Joel Huber and his wife, Ashley, of Jacksonville, N.C., Andy Huber, of St. Phillips, and Benjamin Peters, of Evansville; his one and only granddaughter, Chelsea Huber, of St. Phillips; three great-grandsons, Austin Huber, of Jacksonville, N.C., Nathan Duncan, of Keller, Texas, and Jadon Huber, of Jacksonville, N.C.; two brothers, George Huber, of Portersville, Calif., and Orville (Bud) Huber and his wife, Irene, of Newburgh; one sister-in-law, Ruth Pollard and her husband, Jim, of Norway, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Irma (Buttrum) Huber, in March 2005; a son, John Earl Huber, in 1975; a grandson, Peter Pat Duncan, in 1975; two brothers, Marvin and William Huber; and a sister, Elaine Edwards.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, 5330 Washington Ave., with Reverend Kendall Brown officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites by the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Club.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.

John Cleveland Pace
John Cleveland Pace, Jr., 84, of Evansville, and formerly of Posey County, died Monday, February 19, 2007 at Deaconess Hospital.
John graduated from New Harmony High School. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force.
John worked in Mechanical Maintenance at SIGECO for 36 years. He was a member of Lessing Masonic Lodge No. 464.
John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edythe M. Pace; son, David Kyle Pace; brother, Stephen S. Pace and wife, Pamela of Stoneybrook, ME; sisters-in-law, Jean Pace of Andalusia, AL and Helen Pace of Evansville; nieces and nephews.
Services were February 23, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Reverend Delbert Bryant with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery in New Harmony.

Jonathan Ayers Hudgins
Jonathan Ayers Hudgins, residing in New Harmony, formerly of Nashville, TN, passed away February 20, 2007, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, surrounded by his family and friends.
Jonathan was born on November 6, 1955, in Humboldt, Tenn., the son of Dr. James Martin Hudgins and June Ayers Hudgins.
He was raised in Nashville, graduated from McCallie School in Chattanooga in 1973, and attended college at Middle Tennessee State University.
He owned and operated Hudgins Appraisal Service out of Nashville.
He was preceded in death by his mother, June Ayers Hudgins.
He is survived by his wife Laura Hudgins, sons Elliot Hudgins and Alex Petrescu, daughter Christine Hudgins; his father James Hudgins, brother Jeffrey Hudgins, sister Jenifer Jones, and numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
He loved his family and friends, loved to cook, and loved to fish. Jonathan’s ever present smile and positive attitude made everyone around him a better person.
Services were Saturday, February 24, at City Road United Methodist Church at the corner of Gallatin Road and Neely’s Bend in Madison, TN. A second service was held on Sunday, February 25, at Johnson United Methodist Church in New Harmony.

Mildred D. (Cox) Walker
Mildred D. (Cox) Walker, 98, of Evansville, and the mother of Martha Sauve, of Mount Vernon, and Shelby Suave and his wife, Jeri, of New Harmony, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2007, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Mildred was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Benedict Cathedral and a former member of both the Little Sisters of the Poor and Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliaries. Mildred enjoyed playing cards and the piano.
She is survived also by her daughter, Janie Working of Newburgh; and her son, Ben Walker and his wife, Wilma, of Evansville; grandchildren, Robert Working and his wife, Sarah, of Kansas City, Mo., Rebecca Daniels and her husband, Brian, of Newburgh, Elizabeth Young and her husband, Robert,of San Jose, Calif., Steve Sauve and his wife, Julie of, Burnsville, Minn.; stepgrandchildren, Debbie Hite and her husband, Eddie, and Lisa Stallins; great-grandchildren, Maizee, Levon, Jacob and Rose Sauve, Mason Working, Blake Daniels, Hunter Mason Daniels, and Robert Young Jr.; step-great-grandchildren, Nichole Chapman and her husband, Chris, Denah Dannheiser, Craig Dannheiser and his wife, Melanie, and Brittney and Kelsey Stallins; a great-great-granddaughter, Trinity Working; and stepgreat-great-grandchildren, Adyson, Kirston, Keegan, Kennedy, and Kason. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, William Shelby Walker, in 1972, and sons-in-law, Mason Working and George B. Sauve. Services were Monday, Feb. 26, at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, and at St. Benedict Cathedral. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Sister Bernice Kavanaugh
Sister Bernice Kavanaugh, 102, of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, and former Mount Vernon teacher, died Thursday, February 22, 2007, at the monastery’s Hildegard Health Center.
Sister Bernice was born to John and Mary (O’Connor) Kavanaugh on Dec. 4, 1904, in Cannelburg, Ind. She entered the Sisters of St. Benedict in 1922 and made her first profession of vows in 1924 and her final profession in 1927.
She is survived by two sisters, Sister Mary Charlotte Kavanaugh, of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand and Rosemary Kavanaugh, of Indianapolis; nieces and nephews and members of her religious community.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Timothy, Vincent, Albert, Harry, Bernard, Louis, and Francis; and her sister, Katherine Kavanaugh.
Sister Bernice taught school at Huntingburg, Indianapolis, Holy Spirit in Evansville, Dale, and Tucson, Ariz. She served as principal and taught at Vincennes, Clarksville, Holy Redeemer in Evansville, Haubstadt, and Belcourt, N.D.
She was administrator of St. Paul Hermitage, Beech Grove, Ind. She taught religious education to military families at a U.S. Army base in Fort Rucker, Ala. She provided support services at the monastery and served in the ministry of prayer.
The funeral Mass was held Monday, followed by burial in the monastery cemetery. Contributions in memory of Sister Bernice may be made to the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand. Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand is in charge of arrangements.
