William Painter
FLINTSTONE -- William Russell Painter, who retired as an electrical engineer after 28 years at the Tennessee Valley Authority, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at his home. He was 72.
Mr. Painter was a member of East Tennessee Historical Society, First Families of Tennessee, Walker County Historical Society, Delta Genealogical Society, IBEW 175, Lookout post VFW 1289, Crawfish Springs Masonic Lodge 300 F&AM, Charles Market 29, and RAM 99. He was an ordained deacon and attended Shiloh Baptist Church in Rossville, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Ella Mae Padgett Painter; one daughter, Gayle Dean Oliver, Flintstone; one son, William Alan Painter; one sister, Betty Corliss, Rossville, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., with the Rev. Jessie Carl Nolan and the Rev. Paul O'Neal officiating.
Burial will be in Chickamauga City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends all day today at the funeral home.

CHICKAMAUGA -- Lee Marie Pankey died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at her home. She was 79.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at J. Avery Bryan Funeral Home in Chickamauga. Burial will be in Anderson Cemetery.
Arnold Pittman
CHATSWORTH -- Arnold "Sport" Pittman died Saturday, May 6, 2000, in an area hospital. He was 73.
Mr. Pittman was born Oct. 28, 1926 in Whitfield County, Ga. He was retired from Cohutta Bank.
Survivors include his wife, Rowena Pittman; son, Michael Pittman, Dalton; daughter, Brenda Mathis, Chatsworth; sister, Virginia Livley; a granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Shawn Chapman Funeral home with the Rev. Doug Myers and the Rev. Jeff Hensley officiating. Burial will be in Murray Memorial Gardens.
Visitation today after 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

CALHOUN -- Doris Ray died Friday, May 5, 2000, at her home. She was 50.
Ms. Ray was born Nov. 25, 1949 in Patterson, N.J. She was a member of Oostanualla Baptist Church. Ms. Ray was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Edith Hopper.
Survivors include three daughters, Donna Paulison, Fairmount, Ga., Cathy Shields, Madison, Ga., and Amy Ray, Calhoun; two sons, Bobby and Chris Ray, both of Calhoun; and 12 grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Langston officiating. Burial will be in Oostanualla Baptist Church Cemetery.

DALTON -- William A. "Bill" Whitecotton died Thursday, May 4, 2000, in an area hospital. He was 79.

Vera Allen
RESACA -- Vera Mae Allen died Saturday, May 6, 2000, in an area health care facility. She was 81.
She was a native of Murray County, Ga., a homemaker and a member of Belmont Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, James H. Allen; daughter, Delores Robinson; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmie Timms and the Rev. Gary Bowman officiating.

William Brock
CALHOUN -- William "Fred" Brock died Saturday, May 6, 2000. He was 56.
A native of Murray County, Ga., he was a graduate of Valley Point High School, a veteran of the U.S. Army and was employed in the manufacturing industry.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dock Calvin Brock.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Pulliam Brock; daughter, Pamela Easter, Fairmount, Ga.; son, Lee Davis, Sugar Valley, Ga.; mother, Mrs. Will Dee Brock, Dalton, Ga.; three sisters, Claudelle Kubin and Patricia Ann Brock, Dalton, and Mary Dooley, Sugar Valley; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church near Resaca, Ga., with the Rev. Lamar Bearden and the Rev. James Cobb officiating.
The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Richard Burnette
ROSSVILLE -- Funeral services for Richard E. Burnette will be today at 12:30 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway, with the Rev. Walter Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.
Mr. Burnette died Friday, May 5, 2000, at his home. He was 63.
He was a native of Chattanooga and a Baptist. He moved to Rossville two years ago from Kaiserslautern, Germany. Mr. Burnette was retired from the Army as a master sergeant. He served in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Burnette; and father, Alton Burnette.
Survivors include three daughters, Karen Samuels, El Paso, Texas, Sharon Jennings, Pryor, Okla., Tamera Licon, El Paso; brother, Hugh Burnette, Higdon, Ala.; sister, June Foote, Chattanooga, and Nelda Wright, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; mother, Daisy Burnette, Rossville; three grandchildren.
M.C. Cleveland
CHICKAMAUGA -- M.C. Cleveland Sr. died Sunday, May 7, 2000, in an area nursing facility. He was 82.

James Elsberry
ATLANTA -- James Henry Elsberry died Friday, May 5, 2000, in an Atlanta hospital. He was 68.
A native of Chattooga County, Ga., he was retired from Ford Motor Co., a member of College Park First Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Fae Hayes Elsberry; son, Phillip Elsberry, Douglasville, Ga.; two daughters, Melody Godfrey, Newnan, Ga., and Stacie Walker, Sharpsburg, Ga.; three sisters, Annie Ruth Sweatman, Sara Duke, Naomi Fay Ramsey, all of Summerville, Ga.; four brothers, S. Glenn Elsberry, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., and Ed, Bill, and Charles Elsberry, Summerville; 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at Donhoo-Lewis Funeral Home in Hapeville, Ga., with visitation today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Marion McWhorter
TRION -- Marion Elayne McWhorter died Saturday, May 6, 2000, in an area nursing facility. She was 88.
She was the widow of Sam McWhorter, a homemaker and a member of Trion First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Williams, Sparks, Nev., and Elayne Adams, Nicholasville, Ky.; two sons, Stephen R. Harnett, Lexington, Ky., and John M. Harnett, Shinnston, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at West Hill Cemetery in Trion with the Rev. Jimmy Wilborn officiating.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
The family requests no flowers or food.
