Rita L. McCabe Branham, 60, of Mabel
Rita L. McCabe Branham, 60, of Mabel, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness.
Rita L. McCabe was born on April 3, 1938, in Decorah, to Eugene and Clara (Casterton) McCabe. She attended Canton High School. She moved to Belvidere, Ill., where she was a homemaker and later worked in real estate. On May 2, 1980, she married Roy Branham in Belvidere. In August, 1995, the couple moved back to the McCabe homestead in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and enjoyed her family, painting, reading and nature.
She is survived by her husband of rural Mabel; five sons, Timothy (Mary) Flynn, Daniel (Cathy) Flynn, and Patrick Flynn all of Belvidere, Ill., Jody Flynn of Rockford, Ill., and Kerry (Tina) Flynn of Hebron, Ill; four daughters, Desiree (Mrs. Mike) McGee of Belvidere, Shannon (Mrs. Greg) Gibbons and Erin (Mrs. Wayne) Johnson both of Rockford, and Courtney Flynn of Decorah; twelve grandchildren; four step children, Mike (Beth) Branham of Fort Worth, Texas, Kelly (Mrs. Don) Clauer and Kim (Mrs. Todd) McGarry both of Janesville, Wis., and Sandra Branham of Harvard, Ill.; three brothers, Sonny of Decorah, Gary (Carol), and Joey (Mary) both of Burr Oak; and eight sisters, Janice (Mrs. Leroy) Stone of Mabel, Judy (Mrs. Tom) Hentges of Rochelle, Ill., Culah (Mrs. Dan) Pellegrini of Newton, Mass., Diane (Mrs. Andy) Saltis of Abington, Mass., Linda Swehla of Dubuque, Iowa, Kathy (Mrs. Rick) Ellestad of Bettendorf, Iowa, Terry Sue (Mrs. John) Logsdon of Ossian, Iowa, and Jill (Mrs. Dan) Dawley of Burr Oak, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.
Funeral services were Monday at the St. Agnes Catholic Church, Plymouth Rock, Iowa, with the Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Nadine H. Bray, 70, of Preston
Nadine H. Bray, 70, of Preston, died Monday, March 2, 1998, at Harmony Community Hospital.
Nadine Sauer was born March 25, 1927, in Urbana, Iowa., the daughter of Clyde and Viola (Porter) Sauer. As a child the family moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where she attended elementary and West High School, graduating in 1944. In the mid-1940s she moved to California and was employed with General Telephone Edison as a business supervisor. After her retirement in 1988 she moved to Preston where she was co-owner of a gift shop and worked in the Sauer Medical Clinic.
She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston and the Preston VFW Auxiliary where she was a past treasurer. She served on the Preston Trout Day committee, was active in senior citizens, serving as vice-president and was a writer for the local news column for the Republican-Leader in Preston. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to a number of card clubs.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William IV and Gerda Bray, of Barrington, Ill., two daughters and sons-in-law, Shelley and John Santy of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Christy and Tim Stevens of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her mother, Viola Sauer of Preston; two brothers, Dr. Robert Sauer of Preston, and Edward "Bud" Sauer of Bettendorf, Iowa; two sisters, Claudine "Sue" Sauer of Hawthorne, Calif., and Jeannie Hinson of Gilbert, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her father, Clyde.
A memorial service was held Friday at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Joe Schularick officating. Her body has been cremated.
The family suggests that memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Mathilda 'Tillie' Breitbarth, 86, of GM
Mathilda M. "Tillie" Breitbarth, 86, of Grand Meadow, formerly of Rochester, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Grand Meadow Health Care Center.
Mathilda M. Joblinske was born March 7, 1911, in Watonwan County, Minn. She married Harvey Breitbarth Feb. 18, 1937, in Estherville, Iowa. He died in 1968. Mrs. Breitbarth was a bakery assistant at Piggly Wiggly and the Gingerbread House and also worked at Rochester Methodist Hospital. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Rochester.
Survivors include a son, Wilfred of Elkton; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, five brothers and seven sisters.
The funeral was Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester with the Rev. Martin Mueller officiating. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.

Gynith Arlene Brevig, 77, of Spring Grove
Gynith Arlene Brevig, 77, of rural Spring Grove, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Tweeten Lutheran Health Care Center in Spring Grove.
She was born July 11, 1921, in Highland Township, Winneshiek County, to Albert and Lennie (Bergrud) Tollefsrud. She married Maynard Brevig on May 11, 1940. Mrs. Brevig was a lifelong Spring Grove area resident. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Blackhammer, rural Spring Grove, where she was a past Sunday School teacher, a WELCA member, was active in the Hope sewing circle and quilting projects in Blackhammer.
Survivors include her husband, Maynard; three sons, Gary (Susan) and Kenneth (Lynnette), both of Rochester, and Robert (Marty) of Longmont, Colo.; one daughter, Loretta (David) Stigen of Sparta, Wis.; 13 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Archie Bergrud of West Melbourne, Fla.; five sisters, Tinka Rud, Hazel (J. Ruben) Lundberg, Orpha (Lee) Weymiller and Mavis (Earl) Arneson, all of Spring Grove, and Wanda (Eldon) Smith of Mabel. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Blackhammer, rural Spring Grove, today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Rev. William A. Horn will officiate. Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and at the church today from noon to time of services.

Lucille 'Lucy' Briese, 57, of Grand Meadow
Lucille "Lucy" Briese, 57, of rural Grand Meadow, a longtime Kahler Hotel employee, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester as the result of an auto accident on Nov. 17.
Lucille McClellan was born July 22, 1941, in Rochester, grew up on the family farm, attended Stewartville schools and graduated from Stewartville High School. On April 4, 1964, she married Wayne Briese in Stewartville. Her husband is a longtime Grand Meadow area farmer. She began working in the accounting office at the Kahler Hotel before her marriage and continued there until her retirement in 1996. She was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Tom and Roger, both of Richfield, Minn. Her parents preceded her in death.
The funeral was Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley with the Rev. Rodel Eberle officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Gladys Brown, 88, mother of Mabel woman
Gladys H. Brown, 88, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Boswell Hospital in Sun City, Ariz., of natural causes.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Carrol) Austin of Mabel and Karen Eslinger of Grundy Center; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lloyd Hamblin of Lenox, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn R. Brown and two sisters.
A memorial was held on Thursday, July 2, at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center.
Matthew Bue, 17, once of Lanesboro
Matthew Bue, 17 year-old son of Wesley Bue, formerly of Lanesboro, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 7, in Minnetonka, Minn.
He was a senior at Hopkins High School and would have graduated in the spring. He was a talented musician and computer hobbyist and enjoyed camping.
He is survived by his parents Priscilla and Wesley Bue of Minneapolis; stepmother Denise Eng-Bue; sister Sarah Bue; brothers Cevdet Cingi and Benjamin Eng-Bue; grandparents Pearl Bue of Chatfield, and Kent and Cynthia Powers, Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by grandfather, Odell Bue and cousin Karen Johnson.
The funeral was held Monday at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis. Burial will be in the spring in Chatfield. Memorials are suggested to Teens Alone, Hopkins, Minn.

Louise Burrell, 95, of Grand Meadow
Louise Carpenter Burrell, 95, of Grand Meadow, and formerly of West Concord, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at Meadow Manor Nursing Home in Grand Meadow.
Louise Dawson was born May 30, 1902, in Bethel, Minn., and moved with her parents to Dodge County in 1908. She married Philip Carpenter on Nov. 8, 1926, in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed near West Concord until their retirement in 1964. Mr. Carpenter died May 15, 1968. She then lived in Dodge Center for several years. On June 1, 1975, she married Harry Burrell and they moved to Montana. She continued to live in Montana for a couple of years after his death in 1977, then moved to an apartment in Grand Meadow, and since 1991 had lived at Meadow Manor. Mrs. Burrell was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in West Concord and was clerk of school District No. 75 until the schools consolidated. She raised a garden and loved animals.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Carpenter of Oelwein, Iowa, and Lowell Carpenter of Mankato, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-gr_ndchild. She was preceded in death by two daughters, one grandson, five sisters and one brother.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at First Baptist Church in West Concord with the Rev. Patrick Phinney officiating. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Michaelson Funeral Home, West Concord Chapel, and one hour prior to the service today at the church.

Donald R. Buss, brother of Chatfield men
Donald R. Buss, 54, of Rochester, a former area farmer, died Monday, March 30, 1998.
Born March 2, 1944, in Slayton, Minn., he lived there for 10 years and then moved to Dover, graduated from Dover-Eyota High School in 1962 and continued to live in Dover until his marriage. On Sept. 11, 1965, he married Virginia Peck in Eyota and they farmed in rural Eyota until moving to Rochester. He later farmed in the Fountain area for 12 years and lived in Raleigh, N.C. for 12 years before returning to Rochester in 1996. In addition to farming he worked in road construction. He was a member of Habitat for Humanity.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Rick of Charlotte, N.C.; his mother, Tena Buss of Rochester; five brothers, Dallas of Rockford, Ill., George Jr. of Elba, Lonnie of Rochester and Lyle and Darwin, both of Chatfield; and six sisters, Sharon (Mrs. Leland) Hammel, Marilyn (Mrs. Gary) Brockway and Kathy Wanek, all of Eyota, Sharilyn (Mrs. Ronald) Solberg of Casper, Wyo., Star (Mrs. Lee) Kester of Chatfield and Donnel (Mrs. David) Johnson of Buffalo City, Wis. He was preceded in death by his father, a son and a brother.

Ralston Byrge, 35, formerly of Spring Valley
Ralston "Rollie" I. Byrge, 35, of San Jose, Calif., a former resident of Spring Valley, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at his home.
He was born Jan. 15, 1963. He lived in Spring Valley, where he graduated from high school in 1981. In 1983 he moved to San Jose. From 1984 to 1988 he served in the U. S. Marine Corps as an aviation electrician. He worked as a foreman and truck driver for Hill Brothers Chemical Company in San Jose for nine years. He enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his parents, Laverne and Katherine Byrge of Cave Junction, Ore.; four brothers, Phillip Byrge of Minneapolis, Kevin Byrge of St. Paul, Gary Byrge of Redwood City, Calif., and Joel Byrge of Cave Junction, Ore.

Anna M. Callanan, 87, mother of Preston man
Anna Marie Callanan, 87, of Comfrey, Minn., died on April 8, 1998, at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital, Mankato.
She was born April 5, 1911, in Rockwell, Iowa, to James and Christina Kielty. On Nov. 29, 1930, she married Paul Callanan in Mason City, Iowa. In 1962 they moved to Comfrey. She was a housekeeper at the Comfrey Hospital from 1963 to 1980. She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and the Comfrey Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed reading, quilting, cooking, flowers, gardening, playing cards, horseracing and traveling.
She is survived by her children, Art and wife, Ruth, Callanan, Preston; Paul and wife, Marlyn, Callanan, Mankato; Evelyn and husband, Wilbur "Bud," Jones of Scotts Valley, Calif.; Barbara and husband, Robert, Rathman of Sleepy Eye, Minn.; Marlys and husband, Lloyd, Domeier of San Jose, Calif.; Charlotte and husband, Wallace, Wandersee of Bloomington, Minn.; Mary and husband, Tod, Schulte of Redding, Calif.; Dick and wife, Pat, Callanan of Savage, Minn.; Helen and husband, Ray, Helgeson of Maple Plain, Minn.; Kevin and wife, Robyn, Callanan of St. Charles, Minn..; 37 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Sturm of Roseville, Calif.

Peter J. Canellos, 79, father of Fountain girl
Peter J. Canellos, 79, of Sun City, Ariz., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, in Walter O. Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City.
Mr. Canellos was born April 23, 1918, in Minneapolis. He married Helen Drexler on Aug. 26, 1942, in Chicago. She survives. He retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel in 1961 after serving 26 years. He was named Civil Defense director for Rochester and Olmsted County in 1963, a post he held for 17 years. The couple moved to Sun City in 1980. He was a member of the Rochester Lodge No. 21 A.F. & A.M. of the Royal Arch Masons, Home Commandery No. 5 Knights Templar and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, the Osman Temple of the Sun City Shrine Club, VFW, Disabled American Veterans, Retired Officers Association, Sundial Mens Club, Oakmont Mens Club, National Association of Mature People, Order of AHEPA, National Association for Uniformed Services and All Saints of the Desert.
Surviving also is a daughter, Mary Parker of Fountain; a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, two sisters and two brothers.
A memorial service was Thursday at Ranfranz Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Nicholas Kasemeotes officiating. A private family burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Raymond W. Carlin, 76, a former Preston resident, died recently of Parkinson Disease in San Diego, Calif.
He was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Preston. He was a member of the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He married Esther Jesperson in San Diego on Oct. 26, 1946.
Survivors include his wife, Esther, four sons, Steve, Roger, Patrick and Mike, two daughters, Sandra and Diane; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Joe Carlin, Albert Lea; seven sisters, Gladys (Mrs. Kenneth) Evenson, Mary (Mrs. Merle) Sparks of Austin; Rose (Mrs. Beach) Elam, Silver Bay, Minn., Irene (Mrs. Vince)Tlougan, Rochester; Helen (Mrs. Allan) Frank, Prescott, Wis.; Evelyn Marzolf, and Patricia Carlin, Preston. He was preceded in death by a daughter, one brother and his parents.
Burial was at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, Calif.
John "Jack" Carolan, 56, of Mabel
John "Jack" Carolan, 56, of Mabel, formerly of Ossian, Iowa, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse.
He was born April 3, 1942, in Decorah, the son of John L. and Gladys (Einck) Carolan of Decorah. He attended Decorah High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1960-63 and was a member of the Mabel Legion and VFW in Decorah.
He married Cleo Patterson. He is survived by four children, John and Annie Carolan, Decorah, Jason and Shelley Carolan, Decorah, Jarad and Wendy Carolan, Burr Oak, and Jolene and Matt Nierling of Burr Oak; four grandchildren, Taylor, Randi Jo, Kelsey and Cody Carolan; one brother, Gary Carolan, Nabelsville, Ind.; and one sister, Sheryl Hayes, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
The funeral was Monday at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Bluffton, Iowa, with burial in the church cemetery.

Liela J. Carlson, 72, of Houston, a former Lucas Body Systems employee, died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at her home.
Liela J. Benson was born July 23, 1925, in Houston. On May 19, 1947, she married Allen Carlson in Houston. She worked at Belle's Cafe in Houston for 3-1/2 years and was employed at Lucas Body Systems in Rushford for 23-1/2 years before her retirement in 1993. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and was active in her church and community, including volunteering at Valley View Nursing Home and Houston American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed Norwegian baking and crocheting.
Survivors include four daughters, Marsha (Mrs. David) Benson and Barbara (Mrs. Charlie) Vix, both of Houston, Norma (Mrs. Dean) Rentmeester of Lockbourne, Ohio, and Rebecca (Mrs. Mike) Waara of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Jeffrey of Rochester and Randy of Hokah, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 17 stepgreat-grandchildren; and three sisters, Eva Albee of Caledonia, Florence (Mrs. Dick) Johnson of Preston and Dorothy (Mrs. Ron) Greseth of Rochester. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.

A. Carothers, mother of Harmony woman
Adeline F. Carothers, 81, of Austin, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at the Austin Medical Center.
She was born on April 25, 1917, to Rev. Herman and Caroline (Haberkamp) Greimann in Dale, Wis. She graduated from Garner High School in Garner, Iowa, in 1935. She went to Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, from 1935 to 1936 and then taught in a rural school from 1936 to 1938. She married Charles D. Carothers on June 19, 1938, and moved to Austin. She attended Winona State College and graduated from Mankato State College with a Bachelors Degree in Science. She taught in the rural schools of Hollandale, Brownsdale and Blooming Prairie and 21 years in the Austin Public Schools and retired in 1977. She and her husband moved to Lake Mills, Iowa, and later moved back to Austin in the early 1980s. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School there. She loved her family and friends and held close in her heart the students she taught in elementary and special education classes. Her hobbies included reading and gardening.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Carol) Carothers of Owatonna, and Jim (Linda) Carothers of Johnston, Iowa; one daughter, Judy (Bob) Peters of Harmony; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Charlotte (Leonard) Swanson of Austin, and Dorothy (Norman) Anderson of Ventura, Iowa; two brothers, Curtis (Ruth) Greimann and Eugene (Doris) Griemann of Garner, Iowa; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Carothers who died Sept. 22, 1996, her parents and a granddaughter, Faith Casterton.
Funeral services were held Friday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating. A graveside service was at Concord Township Cemetery in Garner, Iowa.

Elwin 'Al' Carson, 93, once of Spring Valley
Elwin G. "Al" Carson, 93, formerly of Spring Valley, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at the Ostrander Nursing Home where he had resided since Feb. 2, 1995.
He was born Sept. 24, 1904, in Bennington Township, Mower County, to Charles Carson and Minnie Guy Carson. He graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1923 and attended the University of Minnesota for a year. During World War II he served in North Africa and was an inspector for the Air Force at Holman Field in St. Paul. On June 20, 1948, he married Myrtle Burman in Malmo, Minn. Mr. Carson was a grocery clerk for the Kummer Brothers farmers store and for the Beagle Grocery Store which he later purchased. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, the Spring Valley American Legion, the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce, of which he served as secretary and president. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and delivering meals on wheels.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle of Spring Valley, two daughters, Karen Carson of Minneapolis and Barbara (Mrs. Thomas) Slegel of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Estelle and Melissa Slegel and a niece, Shirlie Marburger Brownlow.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Guy, and two sisters, Gertrude and Lucile.
No services are planned at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The body was donated to medical science.

Al Carson, 93, a retired grocer was born Sept. 25, 1904, in Bennington, Minn. He died at the Ostrander Nursing Home Jan. 17, 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; daughters, Karen Carson of Minneapolis and Barbara and her husband, Thomas Slegel, and their two daughers, Estelle and Melissa of Phoenix, Ariz.; and niece, Shirlie and her husband, Dr. Neil Brownlow and their four children of Albert Lea, Minn.
Stephen Carson, 48, formerly of Preston
Stephen Roger Carson, 48, of Mesa, Ariz., died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998.
A memorial service is planned for today (Thursday) at Wyman Cremation and Burial Chapel in Mesa.
The son of Roger and Lois Carson, he was born in Preston.
He is survived by his wife, Luanne Carson; one daughter, Catherine (Katie) Carson; two sons, Jesse and Abraham (Abe) Carson; his parents, Roger and Lois Carson; two sisters, Sandra Fortney and Sheri Bauter; and two brothers, Richard Carson and Charles Carson; along with his maternal grandparents, Reuben and Dorothy Wordelman.
