Ruth W. Babbitt, 89, of Grand Meadow
Ruth W. Babbitt, 89, of Grand Meadow, a former farm homemaker, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Spring Valley Care Center as a result of a stroke suffered Nov. 14.
Ruth W. Arp was born April 20, 1911, in a sod house in Arp, Mont., and in 1912 moved to Walnut, Iowa, where she grew up. She graduated valedictorian of her class at Walnut High School and after attending teachers' training, taught in country schools. On Feb. 22, 1930, she married Hubert M. Babbitt. They farmed in Iowa for several years and then in the Grand Meadow area until 1953. In addition, she was dietary manager at Spring Valley Hospital for many years. Her husband died in March 1967.
Survivors include three sons, Glenn (Janet) of Rockwell City, Iowa, Donald (Renee) of Pequot Lakes, Minn., and Dana (Molly) of South St. Paul; a daughter, Judy (William) Jones of Grand Meadow; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, a sister and a granddaughter.
The funeral was Tuesday at United Church in Grand Meadow, with the Rev. Donald D. Budd officiating. Burial was in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Charles R. Bacon, 76, formerly of Mabel
Charles R. Bacon, 76, of La Crescent, died on Friday, June 23, 2000, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, following an extended illness.
He was born on Jan. 29, 1924, in Brownsdale, Minn., to Ray and Emma (Nordenmalm) Bacon. He spent his life as a farmer in the Mabel area. In 1971, he married Marlene Lucas of Chisolm, Minn., and they farmed together until retiring and moving to LaCrescent. They enjoyed their years and many travels together until her death in 1983. After selling his home in LaCrescent this past spring, Mr. Bacon had been residing at the Alterra Sterling House of LaCrosse.
He was a member of the LaCrescent United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Morning Star Lodge #29 and Evening Star Lodge #71, both of LaCrescent. He also played the clarinet with a German band called the Mabel Grenadiers for many years.
He is survived by two sisters, Helen (Joe) Richmond of Muskogee, Okla., and Dorothy Zleisy of Lompoc, Calif.; three brothers, Roger (Angie) Bacon of Mabel, George (Candace) Bacon of Mission, Texas, and Robert (Arlene) Bacon of Brownsville, Minn.; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Charles was preceded in death by a brother, Dexter.
The funeral was held Wednesday at the LaCrescent United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linda Grounds officiating. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in La Crescent.
C. W. 'Wendell' Bacon, 65, formerly of SV
Charles W. "Wendell" Bacon, 65, of St. Paul Park, Minn., formerly of Spring Valley, died suddenly Monday afternoon, Jan. 10, 2000, in Inver Grove Heights, Minn.
He was born Sept. 4, 1934, in Spring Valley, the son of Frank and Viota (Purdue) Bacon. He was raised in the Spring Valley area, where he attended school. He served with the U. S. Army from 1953 to 1960, first in the Korean War and then in Germany as a military policeman. After his discharge, he made his home in the Twin City area where he worked for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation retiring in 1999. He was married and later divorced.
He is survived by four brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Betty Bacon of Rogers, Ark., Foster "Bob" and Betty Bacon of Neodesha, Kans., LaVerne Bacon of Dilworth, Minn., and Donald Bacon of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Fran Bacon, LaVonne Walter and Evelyn Strain, all of Rochester; one sister-in-law, Esther Davis of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
The funeral was Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley with the Rev. Joe Haynes of First Baptist Church in Spring Valley officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was in the Spring Valley Cemetery.
Dale R. Bacon, 86, formerly of SV
Dale R. Bacon, 86, of Rogers, Ark., and formerly of Spring Valley, died Dec. 5, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers.
He was born Sept. 10, 1914, in St. Anthony, Iowa, to Benjamin Franklin and Viota (Perdue) Bacon. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater from 1941 to 1944, with the 34th Division (Red Bull) and 133rd Infantry Company C between 1940 and 1945. He received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church of Rogers.
Survivors include his wife, Betty W. Bacon, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry G. (Joyce) of Burnsville, Minn., and David I. (Stella) of North Little Rock, Ark.; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia (Stephen) Penn of Rogers; three brothers, Foster "Bob" of Neodesha, Kan., Laverne of Dilworth, Minn., and Don of Tempe, Ariz.; three sisters, Frances K. Bacon, Lavonne Walters and Evelyn Strain, all of Rochester; and five grandchildren.
Services were held Dec. 11 at Temple Baptist Church in Rogers, with burial in National Cemetery at Fayetteville with full military honors by Northwest Honor Guard.

Orletha Bacon, 86, sister of SV people
Orletha Bacon, 86, of Stewartville, a lifelong area resident, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Stewartville Apartments.
She was born Aug. 12, 1913, in Amherst, Fillmore County, and attended Fillmore County rural schools. She lived in the Chatfield, Fountain and Rochester areas all her life. She worked in housekeeping at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester for 20 years. Her husband, Harvey W. Bacon, was employed at Rochester Dairy for many years. He preceded her in death. She was a member of the Chatfield United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Ronald of Pelican Rapids, Minn.; two daughters, Yvonne Agnew of California and Janice Glackin of Cannon Falls; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nine sisters, Ovedia Bakken of Wykoff, Leila Tienter of Spring Valley, Eva Sorenson of Oakland, Minn., Almeda Engel of Austin, LaVonne Spurgeon of Brownsdale, Luella Tufte of Rockford, Ill., Deloris Gardner of Poplar Grove, Ill., and Martha Vogen and Freda Lobland, both of Rochester; and two brothers, Kenneth Bremseth of Spring Valley and Richard Bremseth of Rochester. She was preceded in death by a son, four brothers and a sister.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. July 15 at the Chatfield United Methodist church. The body has been donated to Mayo Foundation for medical research.
Maelo H. Bahl, 94, formerly of Preston
Maelo H. Bahl, 94, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in Seminary Manor in Galesburg, Texas.
She was born Oct. 9, 1905, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Hannah Fogarty Heinz.
She graduated from high school in Dubuque and taught school for two years in Dubuque and was bookkeeper for Kendrick's Lumber in Abingdon for 25 years.
She married Andrew J. Bahl on June 12, 1928, in Dubuque. He died in 1941. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, its Altar and Rosary Society, and the Abingdon Business and Professional Women's Club. She lived in Preston from 1968 until 1981.
Survivors are two sons, John A. Bahl of Montgomery, Iowa, and Richard A. Bahl of Preston; one daughter, Mary Lou Brock of Galesburg; 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol, and by two brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.
The funeral was Friday in Corpus Christi Catholic Church with the Rev. Mike Van Acker officiating. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery in Dubuque.

Jeremiah Andrew Baker, infant son of Amy and Shane Baker of Rochester, was stillborn Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Olmsted Community Hospital.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his paternal grandfather, Bernard Sheridan of Houston; maternal grandparents, Gary and Kathy Swanson of Willmar, Minn., and Tom and Renee Thielges of Tampa, Fla.; paternal great-grandmother, Magdaline Baker Jeske of Wykoff; and maternal great-grandparents, Elton and Joan Carlson of Willmar and Agnes Thielges of Minnetonka, Minn.
A private service was held Wednesday. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Darrell Bakke, formerly of Mabel
Darrell Maynard Bakke, formerly of Mabel, died Nov. 29, 1999, at Bullhead City, Ariz.
He was the son of Julius and Elizabeth (Amdahl) Bakke. He attended Mabel schools and graduated from Mabel High School in l938. He married Marguerite Schmidt from Wabasha. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1942 to 1946. They lived in Inglewood, Calif., and he worked as a guard at Northrup. After his retirement he moved to Bullhead City, Ariz. His wife died in 1989. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean (Leo) Drischler of Lakewood, Calif., three grandchildren, one sister, nephews and nieces.
He was cremated. There was a private interment.
Esther Bangsund, 97, formerly of Preston
Esther Bangsund of Montevideo, died on Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 97.
Esther (Mills) Bangsund was born Sept. 9, 1902, in Preston Township, Fillmore County, to Willard and Katherine (Williams) Mills. She attended rural schools and graduated from Preston High School and later from Winona State Teachers College. She taught elementary school for several years. On Nov. 28, 1938, she was united in marriage to Bertram Bergsund in Preston. They lived and farmed near Montevideo until they moved into the town in 1990.
She is survived by one daughter, Katherine Bangsund of Lincoln, Neb; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Bangsund of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; two grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Alice Bangsund of Montevideo, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Bertram in 1995; one son, David, in 1993 and one brother, Walter Mills.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, May 6, at Saron Lutheran Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Lewis Peter Barth, 83, of Preston
Lewis Peter Barth, 83, of Preston, died at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000.
He was born March 13, 1917, in Preston Township in Fillmore County, the son of Charles and Louise (Kern) Barth. He attended North Windy Ridge country school near Preston. After school he farmed with his father and brother until he entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater until his discharge in December of 1945. After his discharge he returned home and again farmed with his family. On June 10, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Jefferis in Elgin, Minn. Following their marriage, the couple continued to farm on the family place until 1974 when they moved into Preston. After moving to Preston he worked at various farm related jobs.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where he also served on the church council. He was a member of the Camp Creek Watershed Committee, the Preston Cemetery Association, the VFW Post and American Legion Post, both of Preston, where he served as post commander for both organizations, was quartermaster of the VFW for seven years and was a longtime chairman of the Fly Committee. He was an avid bowler and fisherman and card player.
He is survived by his wife of Preston; four sons, Bob (Judy) of Arcadia, Wis., Gary of Newark, Ill., John (Linda) of Eden Prairie and Richard (Karen) of Spring Valley; one daughter, Amy Barth of Burnsville, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Carol of Preston; and two sisters, Rose Lombard and Olive Cady, both of Lake City. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Sonnabend; three sisters; and five brothers.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church in Preston with the Revs. James Rushton and Bernard Daiker officiating. Full military rites were performed by both the Preston VFW and American Legions Posts at the Crown Hill Mausoleum in Preston. Burial will be in the spring at the Greenwood Cemetery in Preston. Teddy Jane Bartscher, 57, Spring Valley
Teddy Jane Bartscher, 57, of Spring Valley, a homemaker, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester following a lengthy illness.
Teddy Jane Culver was born March 13, 1942, in Marshalltown, Iowa, spent her early youth in Marshalltown, and after her father's death, moved with her family to several Iowa towns and graduated from high school in Estherville, Iowa. She was a cost accountant before her marriage. On Oct. 31, 1970, she married Michael "Mike" Bartscher in Moline, Ill. They lived in Clinton, Iowa, Marshall, Minn., and Columbus, Neb. before moving to Spring Valley in 1998. She enjoyed fishing and dancing.
Survivors include her husband; a son, David, of Dallas, Texas; a daughter, Leisa Bartscher of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Larry Culver of Rock Island, Ill.; three stepbrothers and a stepsister. She was preceded in death by her parents.
The funeral was Saturday at Rochester Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Frost officiating. Burial was Monday in the Durant, Iowa, cemetery.

Genevieve "Genny" (Stokes) Bastian, 68, of Shakopee, formerly of Rochester, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn. She was the wife of former Preston resident, Wallace Bastian.
She was born Dec. 15, 1931, in Rochester and married Wallace "Wally" Bastian on June 14, 1952, in Chatfield. She taught in Shakopee Public Schools for 30 years.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Julie (Mrs. John) Meloche and Neanie (Mrs. Mike) Brown; two sons, David and Chris; four grandchildren and a brother, Pat Stokes. A brother preceded her in death.
A funeral mass was held Thursday, Jan. 6, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shakopee.

Richard Lee Baxter, 65, of Palmyra, Mo., died Sept. 25, 2000, at Blessing Hospital.
He was born March 15, 1935, at Carthage, Ill., to Lawrence W. and Nevi I. Paul Baxter.
He married Janice Marie Horton Sept. 18, 1955, at Hamilton, Ill.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Dana (Beth) Baxter of Palmyra; one daughter, Tami (Jim) Edgar of Spring Valley, a brother, Paul Baxter of Chino Hills, Calif.; a sister, Colleen M. Smith of Billings, Mont.; grandchildren, Dana Marie, Erin Rebecca, Zachary James and Lee Thomas Edgar of Spring Valley, Rory Alan Meyers and Cody Lloyd Baxter of Palmyra.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph D. Baxter, and a sister, Gratia Jean Kirkpatrick.
He was a graduate of Carthage High School and served in the United States Army and Army Reserves.
He was employed 31 years at Gardner-Denver/Cooper Industries as a test technician, draftsman and product specialist; he was also a carpenter and Marion County farmer.
He was formerly active with the Boy Scouts of America, was a past president of the Gardner-Denver Horseshoe Pitching League, was a former board member of the Fabious Community House and raised Brittany Spaniels. He was a member of the Iowa Brittany Club and competed in field dog trials. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, camping and travel. He was a member of Carthage United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were Saturday at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra with the Rev. James Croft officiating.
Doris Beall, 78, formerly of Preston
Doris Beall, 78, of Hazel Green, Wis., died Aug. 4, 1999, in an automobile accident near Hazel Green.
Doris Dougherty was born July 8, 1921, in Fountain, the daughter of Anna and Samuel Dougherty. She graduated from Preston High School in 1940 and lived in Preston and Rochester, where she was employed by Northwest Bell Telephone. Before moving to Hazel Green in 1969 she had also lived in Seattle, Wash., Los Angeles and San Diego, Calif., Duluth, Minn., and Honolulu, Hawaii.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas; one daughter, Laurie (Mrs. Robert) Toth of San Diego; one grandson; and one sister, Colleen Long of Jerome, Idaho. A sister and four brothers preceded her in death.
Services and burial were in Dubuque, Iowa, on Aug. 10.
Murlie Ann Beese, 70, sister of SV man
Murlie Ann Beese, 70, of Faribault, formerly of Waseca, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at the St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault.
She was born in Fillmore County on Feb. 25, 1930, the daughter of Harold and Laura (Bower) Mosher. She graduated from Wykoff High School in 1948. She married Gerald R. Beese on April 2, 1950, in Wykoff. They lived at various places around the country before moving to Waseca in 1978. She moved to Faribault in 1998. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sports, and baking cookies.
She is survived by her mother, Laura Mosher of Wykoff; one daughter, Debra Beese of Edina; two sons, Daniel (Gail) Beese of Huntertown, Ind., Douglas (Linda) Beese of Decatur, Ill., son-in-law Raymond (Jennifer) Cook of Williamstown, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Kelli Beese, Kristi Beese, Bree Cook, Austin Turner, Ryan Cook, Michael Beese and Matthew Beese; two sisters, Connie (Bill) Bicknese of Wykoff, and June (Paul) Finke of Boynton Beach, Fla.; one brother, Gordon (Barb) Mosher of Spring Valley; nieces and nephews; and special relatives, Kathleen Kanne and Kenneth Kanne of Faribault. She was preceded in death by her father, her husband in 1996, and one daughter, Sandra Cook, in 1989.
Funeral services were Saturday at Kinder-Dennis Home for Funerals in Waseca, with the Rev. Gary Wunderlich and the Rev. Ray Ades officiating. Burial was at Blooming Grove United Methodist Cemetery in Blooming Grove Township, Waseca County.

Allene Bendickson, 83, of Spring Valley
Allene Bendickson, 83, of Spring Valley and formerly of the LeRoy area, died Saturday evening en route to the hospital. She was born May 9, 1916, in rural Fillmore County to John William and Jenny (Mathison) Terbeest. She attended rural schools in the Cherry Grove area and in 1935 she was united in marriage to Burton Austin. He died in 1952. She was later united in marriage to Axel H. "Doc" Bendickson in 1955. She worked as a veterinary assistant for many years and also sold real estate in the LeRoy area. She was a member of the LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years.
She is survived by her husband; one son, James (Ada) Austin of Harmony; one daughter, Meredith "Tootie" Foster of Spring Valley; four grandsons, Scott, Mike, Art and Jimmy; two granddaughters; Tori and Konya; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and one grandson, Charlie Foster.
Services will be Wednesday at the LeRoy Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Thomas Kolden officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Eunice M Benson, 71, of Mabel
Eunice M. Benson, 71, of Mabel, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.
Eunice M. Foltz was born April 19, 1928, in Decorah, to Henry and Clara (Anderson) Foltz. She attended school in Canton, Hesper and Mabel. On April 16, 1948, she married Arnold "Buddy" Benson at the parsonage in Mabel. They farmed in the Mabel area until moving to Spring Valley in 1964 where they operated the Four Winds restaurant. She also worked at Crenlo in Rochester. In 1977, they farmed near Sheldon, Wis., until 1987 when they moved back to Mabel and have resided there since. She was a member of the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel, the Mabel Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed fishing and crocheting.
Mrs. Benson is survived by her husband, Arnold, of Mabel; two sons, Gary of Mason City, Iowa, and Kyle of Miami, Fla.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Lloyd of Hesper, Iowa, and Dean of Caledonia; and one sister, Helen (Mrs. Harold) Selness of Spring Grove.
Funeral services were Saturday at the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Garvin J. Benson, 98, formerly of Lanesboro
Garvin J. Benson, 98, formerly of Lanesboro, a retired public utilities superintendent, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2000, at Stewartville Care Center.
He was born Aug. 15, 1902, in Lanesboro and grew up here. Mr. Benson was employed by the highway department and then worked at the light plant in Rushford. For 18 years before his retirement, he was superintendent at Lanesboro Public Utilities. He and his wife were foster care providers. His wife, the former Julia Brekke, died Dec. 17, 1979. Mr. Benson resided with his daughter in Stewartville before entering the nursing home six years ago.
Survivors include his daughter, Marilyn (Norman) Pankow of Rochester; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lanesboro with the Rev. Kerry Eversole officiating. Burial was in the Lanesboro Cemetery.

Harold T. Benson, 84, of Mabel
Harold T. Benson, 84, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.
He was born March 28, 1916, in Harmony Township in Fillmore County to Halvor and Tillie (Felland) Benson. He attended and graduated from the Harmony High School in 1934. On Jan. 20, 1937, he married Borghild A. Bjergum in Cresco, Iowa. They farmed in the Harmony area before moving to the Mabel area in 1943. While farming, he also worked in the ASC office in Preston until his retirement. Borghild later passed away on June 30, 1997. He remained in Mabel and has just recently been a resident at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.
He is survived by three sons, Richard (Donna) of Mabel, Blaine (Ann) of N. Aurora, Ill., and Dan of Memphis, Tenn.; two grandchildren and one step granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Ronald; three sisters, Mildred Bigalk, Alice Benson and Geneva McCarty; and four brothers, Arnold, Alvin, Roy and Harvey.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel with the Rev. Lloyd Menke officiating. Burial will be in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery in Mabel. Mengis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Raymond A. Benson, 83, of Peterson
Raymond A. Benson, 83, of Peterson, a retired carpenter, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born April 8, 1916, in Peterson, graduated from Peterson High School and lived in the Peterson area most of his life. On Jan. 26, 1945, he married Lorraine Johnson in Mabel. He farmed in his earlier years and for the last 20 years had worked as a carpenter. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Ron of Peterson; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmer of Peterson; and one sister, Lillian (Mrs. Delmar) Bunke of Winona.
The funeral was Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Peterson. Burial was in East Grace Lutheran Cemetery.

P. Bergan, son of former Harmony resident
Paul Martin Bergan, 57, died March 31, 2000, at his home in Minneapolis from pancreatic cancer after a few month's illness.
He was the son of Kenneth and the late Vivian Bergan of Decorah, Iowa. His father was formerly from Harmony. He graduated from high school in Minneapolis, Luther College and was an officer aboard an aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. For the past 10 years he was a special education teacher in Hennepin County.
He was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his father, his wife, Lois; a daughter, Joy (Wayne) Sabin; a grandson, Teddy; a sister, Ruth (Jack) Anderson, and other relatives.
Memorial services were held Monday, April 10, at the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel.
Arnold R. Bergler, 76, once of Spring Grove
Arnold R. Bergler, 76, of Rochester, a building contractor, died of cancer, Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Saint Marys Hospital.
He was born July 17, 1924, in Winona and attended Winona public schools. On June 10, 1953, he married Jeanette Salwey at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wilson. The couple lived in Spring Grove, where she was a teacher and he was inspector for Mansfield Industries. In 1956 they moved to Rochester. He was a building contractor in the Rochester area for 35 years. The couple belonged to the Winona State University Keystone Society. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Rochester Woodcarvers Association, SEMVA, and a volunteer in his community. He was an avid woodcarver and cabinet maker and enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife and one brother, James, of Winona.
The funeral was held Tuesday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wilson, with burial in the Trinity Cemetery in Wilson.
Macken Funeral Home, Rochester, was in charge of arrangements.
Luverne Bergsrud, 88, of Spring Grove
Luverne Bergsrud, 88, of Spring Grove died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis.
She was born Aug. 8, 1912, on the Bryant family farm in rural Hesper, Winneshiek County, Iowa, to Archie and Bertha (Casterton) Bryant. She was a lifelong resident of the Spring Grove area. She attended Grinland School in rural Hesper, Iowa. On Dec. 28, 1933, she married Walter Bergsrud. He died in September of 1977. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, where she was active in its various groups.
Survivors include three sons, Wesley (Peg) and Daryel, both of Anchorage, Ark., and David of Nome, Ark.; three daughters Berthana (Peter) Wirth of Spring Grove, LaDeane (Donald) Dahle of Hutchinson, Minn., and LuCinda (Charles) Thomas of Four Oaks, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irma Bryant, of Mabel.
In addition to her husband, Walter, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Fossum, Alberta White and Gladyse Bryant; one grandson, Michael Bergsrud; one infant sister and one infant brother.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove with Pastor Zane Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Roble Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Dean L. Berning, 74, Preston native
Dean L. Berning, 74, of Des Moines, Iowa, and formerly of Preston, died Sept. 15, 2000, of cancer.
He was born in Preston and lived in Des Moines since the early 1960s. He was a retired general agent for Life Investors Insurance Company. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
He was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church, Hi-Twelve, The Masters Club Of Life Investors, Acanthus Lodge, Za Ga Zig Shrine and The Tux Brigade Of The Shrine.
Berning is survived by his wife, Alice (Anderson), a daughter, Barbara Whipple of Overland Park, Kan.; a son, Mark Berning of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Maxine Vandewege of Las Vegas, Nev.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 18, at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Des Moines, Iowa. Burial will be at a later date at the Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.
