Maynard Kahl, 77, brother of GM men
Maynard P. Kahl, 77, of Joice, Iowa, and formerly a Grand Meadow area farmer, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 3000, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City, Iowa, of cancer.
He was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Webster City, Iowa, the son of David Alfred and Madeline (Loux) Kahl. He attended rural schools near Blairsburg, Iowa, and served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Jacqueline Zuehlke on Oct. 27, 1947, in Grand Meadow. They farmed near Austin, Minn., and Rockford, Iowa, for 25 years
In 1964 he retired from farming and purchased a truck and performed contract hauling for Carroll Sales in Mason City until his retirement.
He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, a former Rockford City councilman and a former member of the Rockford Methodist Church and the Rockford and Clear Lake Lions clubs. He enjoyed crafts, working outdoors, wintering in Texas and hobby farming.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Vae (John) Wonsmos of Joice and Barbara Jean (Bruce) Wood of Rockford; three brothers, Calvin (Evelyn) Kahl and Harold Kahl, all of Grand Meadow, and David (Harriet) Kahl of LeCenter, Minn., a sister-in-law, Jean Kahl Bush of Grand Meadow; four grandchildren, Robyn, Andrew and Nathan Wood and Jeanne Sigler; two stepgrandsons, Peter and Chris Wonsmos; three great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and three brothers.
The funeral was Dec. 7 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Burial was in Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Joice.
Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel of Clear Lake was in charge of arrangements.

Randi Kahl, 81, formerly of Spring Grove
Randi Kahl, 81, of Rochester, a retired school librarian, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2000, at her home.
Randi Onstad was born March 22, 1918, in Spring Grove and graduated from Spring Grove High School and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She taught English in several Minnesota high schools before her marriage to Gerald Kahl in 1943 in LaCrosse, Wis. In 1959, they moved to Eyota where her husband was superintendent of schools until his retirement. Mrs. Kahl was a librarian at John Marshall High School and later at Rochester Community College for 10 years before her retirement. She was a member of Chatfield Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Susan Kahl and Barbara Kahl, and a sister, Audrey Shannon of Racine, Wis.
A memorial service was held on Saturday at Ranfranz Funeral Home Chapel. The body was cremated.

Viola Tina Kain, 90, mother of SV woman
Viola Tina Kain, 90, of Algona, Iowa died Jan. 16, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center, Algona.
Viola Dacken was born Apirl 17, 1909, in Lotts Creek, Iowa, to Henry and Louise (Schnieder) Dacken. She attended country school in Plum Creek Township in Kossuth County, Iowa. On Feb. 9, 1927, she married Edward J. Kain in Avoca, Minn. They farmed in the Plum Creek area until retiring. She enjoyed cards, reading, gardening, flowers and her vegetables. Mrs. Kain was a member of the Plum Creek Homemakers Club and the Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis (Raymond) Bierle of Buffalo Center, Iowa, and Beverly (Leonard) Plaehn of Spring Valley; three sons, Jim (Irene) of Mount Vernon, Iowa, Mike (Charlene) of Bonner Springs, Kan., and Tom Kain of Algona; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter (Viola) Dacken of Lone Rock, Iowa; two sisters, Irene Nauman of Augusta, Wis., and Ruth (Ernest) Nauman of Algona. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Algona, with Rev. Steven Turner officiating. Burial was in the East Lawn Cemetery.

Mary Lou Kaiser, 43, Lanesboro
Mary Lou Kaiser, 43, of Plymouth, Minn., formerly of Lanesboro, Rochester, and California, died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at her home.
Mary Lou Peterson was born July 20, 1956, in Winona, graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1974 and attended Rochester Junior College and Long Beach, Calif., State College. She moved to Plymouth 2 1/2 years ago. She was a secretary for a retail company.
Survivors include a son, David Dale DeSerre Jr. of Madison, Wis.; a daughter, Kayla Marie Kaiser at home; her father and stepmother, Kenneth and Donna Peterson of Canton; two brothers, Jimmy Joe Peterson of Lanesboro and Thomas Peterson of Kasson; three stepbrothers, Richard Brink of Garland, Texas, Donald Brink of Lanesboro and David Brink of Rushford; and four sisters, Geraldine (Mrs. Michael) Warner of Plymouth, Patricia Haugen and Julie Pairolero, both of Rochester, and Cindy Peterson of Reno, Nev. She was preceded in death by her mother and a sister.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lanesboro, with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson-Riley Funeral Home in Lanesboro and an hour before the service Thursday at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Goldie M. Kappers, 81, of Spring Valley
Goldie Kappers, 81, of Spring Valley, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Olmsted Community Hospital in Rochester.
Goldie Mae Hovey was born Dec. 30, 1918, in York Township, Fillmore County, Minn., to Knute and Martha Lietz Hovey. She attended country schools through the 8th grade and on Oct. 5, 1939, she was united in marriage to Floyd "Ted" Kappers in Ostrander. Together they farmed in the Spring Valley area for many years.
She was a loving mother, devoted grandmother and patient great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and liked sewing, crocheting, needlecrafts, gardening and word search puzzles. Area friends counted on her annual tradition of lefse-making and at least once each year she would open her home for a family garage sale where many would come for her jams, jellies and homemade goodies. Friends coming to call could always plan on a tasty treat, a hot cup of coffee and good conversation.
She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Bonnie (Mrs. Ivan) TerMaat; two granddaughters, June and Jill; and seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey Hovey and Wayne Hovey, both of Lime Springs. She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Services were Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Kevin Woestehoff officiating. Burial in the Spring Valley Cemetery.

Shirley Mae Kappers, 71, Spring Valley
Shirley Mae Kappers, 71, of Spring Valley, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at the Spring Valley Care Center in Spring Valley where she had resided a short time.
She was born June 6, 1929, in Chatfield, to Andrew Oliver and Blanche Kendall Oliver. She attended and graduated from Chatfield High School and on Nov. 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Melvin Kappers at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Spring Valley. She worked at Peterson's Drug Store in Spring Valley for many years and also at the Spring Valley Care Center for 15 years. She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers along with spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin "Tim" Kappers of Spring Valley; daughters Dianne Swenson and Carolyn Shipton, both of Spring Valley; one son, Ronald and wife, Kim Kappers, also of Spring Valley; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; her mother, Blanche Oliver of Chatfield; two sisters, Betty (Kenneth) Knutson of Marion, Minn., and Delores (Lloyd) Pappenfuss of Mondove, Wis.; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Oliver of Evansdale, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her father, a brother, Robert Oliver, and a son-in-law, Dave.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 21, at Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. James Ross officiating. Burial was in the Spring Valley Cemetery.

Norma Kassel, 70, Grand Meadow
Normal Kassel, 70, of Grand Meadow, a former farm homemaker and Mayo Clinic employee, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, where she had been a patient one week.
Norma Stripling was born Nov. 8, 1929, in Sherman Township, near LuVerne, Iowa, graduated from LuVerne High School, and after attending Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls for a year, taught in Iowa for a short time until her marriage. On April 2, 1950, she married Jack Kassel at the Lutheran church in LuVerne. They moved to the Grand Meadow area in 1953. She worked on the farm and also was employed at Mayo Clinic for 20 years. They moved to Grand Meadow in the fall of 1995. She was active in her church and enjoyed gardening, needlepoint, crocheting and reading.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, John of Austin, and Dan and Jeremy, both of Grand Meadow; a daughter, Pamela (Mrs. Marshall) Goodfellow of Dayton, Ohio; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her mother, Jessie Stripling of LuVerne; three brothers, Jerome Stripling of California, and Kenny Stripling and Mike Stripling, both of Iowa, and three sisters, Sandra Agee of Nebraska, and Becky (Mrs. Dewayne) Tobey and Marcia (Mrs. Sherm) Arends, both of Iowa. She was preceded in death by her father, a daughter, a brother and an infant sister.
The funeral was Tuesday at United Church in Grand Meadow. Burial was in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

C. Patricia Kath, 62, mother of Preston man
C. Patricia Kath, 62, of Stewartville, a retired Mayo Clinic employee, died of a heart attack on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in the emergency room of St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
C. Patricia Hamilton was born Aug. 24, 1937, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, grew up there and graduated from Emmetsburg Parochial High School and then worked at Mayo Clinic until her marriage. On April 6, 1959, she married Norbert "Butch" Kath at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Stewartville. After their family was grown, she again worked at the clinic and continued there until her retirement in 1998. Her husband is retired from All-American Co-op Elevator. Mrs. Kath was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Steven of Smithfield, Utah, Douglas of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jeffrey of Preston; two daughters, Theresa (Mrs. Mike) Peterson of Racine and Janet Kath of Hudson, Wis.; seven grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis (Mrs. Sam) Frederich of Superior, Iowa; and a brother, Mike Hamilton of Bunn, N.C. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
A memorial Mass was Friday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Stewartville with the Rev. Gregory Havel officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Edwin Keckhafer, father of Harmony woman
Edwin D. Keckhafer, 90, of Fergus Falls, Minn., formerly of Rochester, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.
He was born June 3, 1910, in Mound, Minn., and moved to Rochester in 1928. He married Olga Hameister in Rochester on Feb. 25, 1932, and they farmed in the Rochester area. They retired to Northern Minnesota in 1968 and had resided in Fergus Falls since January 1999.
Survivors include his wife; seven daughters, including Joan (George) Russell of Harmony; a son; 31 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; four sisters and two brothers. He was preceded in death by a daughter, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two sisters and one brother.
The funeral was held Monday at Korsmo Funeral Chapel in Moorhead. Burial was on Tuesday at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester.

K. Kellner, 67, brother of Preston woman
Kenneth A. Kellner, 67, of Stewartville, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in Seasons Hospice in Rochester. He had been ill one year.
He was born Dec. 23, 1932, in Wesley, Iowa, grew up on the family farm, and moved with his family to Stewartville in 1948. He had farmed with his brother since 1963. He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
Surviving are five brothers, Lawrence (Mary) and Mathia, both of rural Stewartville, Louis (Mary Lou) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sylvester "Rex" (Joan) of Rochester, and Paul (Carol) of Eau Claire, Wis.; three sisters, Viola (James) Gartner of Preston, Fidelis Larson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Margaret (Howard) Webb of New Concord, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a sister.
The funeral will be today (Thursday) in St. Bernard's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Anna Kiehne, 82, of Spring Valley
Anna Mae Kiehne, 82, of Spring Valley, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester of respiratory failure caused by primary amyloidosis, which is a bone marrow disease that causes excessive protein in body tissues.
Anna Mae Goldsmith was born June 15, 1917, in Carimona Township, Fillmore County. She graduated from Preston High School in May 1935 and from Normal Training in 1936. On June 21, 1938, she married Alvin Kiehne at Lanesboro, Minn. The couple farmed in rural Harmony until 1975, when they sold the farm and moved to Preston. He died Feb. 25, 1989. In September 1997 she moved to Spring Valley.
She was active in the churches of which she was a member and active in her communities. She had served on the Semcac board and the Greenwood Cemetery board. She was the 1995 Outstanding Fillmore County Senior Citizen. In addition, she was involved at the Preston Senior Citizen Center and the Fillmore County Committee on Aging. Her volunteer work included Head Start and delivering Meals on Wheels. Her working career included substitute teaching in Harmony, being a bookkeeper, census taker and working in the salesroom at Pine Tree Orchard. She liked to visit with her many friends and travel.
She is survived by two sons, Gerald (Bonnie) of Spring Valley and Dennis (Sandra) of Winona; four daughters, Geraldine (Harris) Williams of Spring Valley, Anna Marie (Lyman Loveland) Kiehne of Tiguard, Ore., Denise (Kevin) Nicholson of St. Paul, Ellen (Gary) Kermeen of Spring Grove; 11 grandchildren, Mark, Michael and Matthew Williams, Rebecca Mae Harrington, Rachel Welch, Kristina and Michael Kiehne, Patrick and Kelly Nicholson, Sheila Valardi and Shelly Williams; two step-grandchildren; Jamie Church and Victor Deyo; seven great-grandchildren; Arianna Williams, Kate and Kristin Mae Harrington, Brittany and Alvin Tyler Williams, Amy Welch and Korie Williams. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wesley and Ralph Goldsmith, and a step-granddaughter, Vicky Deyo.
The funeral was Thursday, March 9, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley, with the Rev. Dennis Timmerman officiating. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Preston.

Agnes Irene King, 85, once of Spring Valley
Agns Irene King, 85, a former longtime Spring Valley resident, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at the Ostrander Nursing Home where she had lived six years.
Agnes Irene Tvedt was born Oct. 22, 1915, in rual Kasson and later moved into Kasson with her mother and graduated from Kasson High School in 1933. On May 18, 1940, she married Herbert M. King of Racine in Kasson. He died in March 1966. She was a waitress and cook and after her retirement was active in volunteer work. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church and the Jolly Dozen Kitchen band, which played in nursing homes and for local celebrations, and was active in RSVP.
Survivors include four sons, Mark "Robert" of San Francisco, Darrell of Bellevue, Neb., Dave of Ashland, Neb., and Donald of Rochester; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A son and two brothers preceded her in death.
The funeral is today (Wednesday) at First English Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. Robert Burmeister officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery in Sumner Township, Fillmore County.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Spring Valley and an hour before the service Wednesday at the church.

Beulah Irene King, 82, Spring Valley
Beulah Irene King, 82, of Spring Valley, died Thursday evening, Feb. 10, 2000, at the home of her daughter in Rochester.
Beulah I. Tabor was born July 13, 1917, in Sumner Twp., Fillmore County, Minn., to Sherdan and Nellie (Owens) Tabor. She attended the Sumner Center School and was later united in marriage to Garfield King on Jan. 21, 1934, in Spring Valley. To this union five children were born: Howard, Gerald, Robert, Lois and Joyce. She was a homemaker and was active in the First Baptist Church as a pianist and vocalist. She was a member of the Sunshine Helpers Club in Spring Valley and enjoyed gardening, flowers, handcrafts, baking, cooking and canning.
She is survived by three sons, Howard King of Eldorado Springs, Mo., Gerald and wife, Ruth King, of Spring Valley, Robert and wife, Janet King, of Pine Island; two daughters, Lois Butturff and husband, Patrick Bowron, of Rochester and Joyce Butturff, also of Rochester; six grandchildren, Bradley Butturff, Brenda Johnson, Wayne King, Curtis Butturff, Grace King and Wanda King; three great-grandchildren, Tessa King, Stephney King and Annaliese Johnson; and one sister, Delores of Butler City, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on March 14, 1992, one sister, Katherine, one brother, Everett, and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Marie King.
Services were held Monday, Feb. 14, at the First Baptist Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Joe Haynes officiating. Burial was in the Hamilton Cemetery in rural Racine.

David W. King Jr., 87, Spring Valley
David William King Jr., 87, of Spring Valley, died Thursday morning at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 10, 1912, in Hamilton, Sumner Township, Fillmore County, to David and Sadie (Rowe) King. He attended country schools through the eighth grade and on Sept. 12, 1935, he was united in marriage to Edna Linnemeyer in Wykoff.
They farmed and raised turkeys in the Wykoff, Plainview and Spring Valley areas and in 1946 he built a neighborhood grocery store, Hilltop Grocery, in Spring Valley. In 1951 he sold the store and bought a number of school buses and was an owner, operator and manager of the bus service in Spring Valley. After driving buses for 27 years, he retired and went to work at Valley Furniture, where he worked for three years.
He was an active member of First English Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, where he held various offices. He was a member of the board of directors for Community Memorial Hospital for 26 years. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce and worked at various community activities.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Eloise "Lala" (Ron) Neis of Spring Valley and Shelva (Tom) Giordano of Stewartville; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Bossart of Ostrander; and two brothers, Roy King of LeRoy and Maynard King of Shakopee, Minn. He was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.
Services were Monday, Aug. 30, at First English Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Robert Burmeister officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery in Wykoff.

Evalyn Kingsbury, 85, once of Harmony
Evalyn Kingsbury, 85, of Rushford, a homemaker, formerly of Harmony, Winona and Whalan, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
She was born Evalyn Campbell on Oct. 20, 1914, in Stuart, Iowa. On March 21, 1941, she married Alvin C. Kingsbury in Manlo, Iowa. They owned and operated the motel in Harmony from 1948 until it was sold in 1970. Her husband died Aug. 29, 1987. She graduated from Winona State University in 1973 with a degree in mathematics. Before moving to Winona in 1992 she had lived in Harmony, Florida, Whalan, Iowa, North Carolina, Texas and Rushford. She attended the Lutheran church for 50 years, was a Sunday school teacher and involved in many aspects of the church. For the past five years she was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Winona. She had been a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, a member of the Garden Club and had volunteered in hospitals and nursing homes. She enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, canning and quilting.
Survivors include four sons, Charles of Rochester, Michael (Karen) of St. Paul, John (LuAnn) of Green Field, S.C., and Richard of Winona; a daughter, Caroline (Robert) Anfinson of Peterson; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter, and a sister, Katie (Bruce) Shaull of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, two brothers and a sister.
The funeral was held Tuesday at Grace Presbyterian Church, Winona. Burial was in Henrytown Lutheran Cemetery, rural Harmony.

Martha D. Kinney, 93, GM native
Martha D. Kinney, 93, a resident of Maple Manor Nursing Home in Rochester, formerly of Byron, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at the nursing home.
Martha D. Hagen was born June 5, 1906, in Grand Meadow and lived in the Byron area all her adult life before entering the nursing home. On April 8, 1925, she married George S. Kinney in Byron. Her husband worked for Cuttings Nursery in Byron. He died March 10, 1996. She was a clerk at Piggly Wiggly and Woolworth's in Rochester and Cuttings Store in Byron. She was a member of Byron United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Krogstand of Petaluma, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter and 10 brothers and sisters.
The funeral was Wednesday at Macken Colonial Chapel in Rochester, with the Rev. Butch Lewellin officiating. Burial was in Marion Cemetery.

Eldora M. Kisro, 87, once of Preston
Eldora M. Kisro, 87, of Chatfield, formerly of Preston, died Thursday morning, March 2, 2000, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield where she had resided since Nov. 4, 1999.
Eldora M. Oldenburg was born Feb. 14, 1913, in Fillmore County, rural Chatfield. On Oct. 16, 1948 she married Charles Kisro in Rochester and they lived in rural Chatfield and Wykoff before moving to Preston in 1965. She was a nursing assistant at Preston Care Center for 23 years and owned and operated a café in Wykoff. Her husband owned and operated a lumber company in Wykoff and later was a Fuller Brush salesman. He died Aug. 25, 1986. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include a sister, Velma Buchanan of Rochester. Four brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.
There was a memorial service on Monday at Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield with the Rev. James Rushton of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston officiating. Burial was in the Chatfield Cemetery.

Anita Kjome, 68, formerly of Spring Grove
Anita F. Kjome, 68, of West Salem, Wisc., and formerly of Spring Grove, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at the Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem, Wisc.
She was born March 7, 1931, in Mabel, Minn., Fillmore County, to Floyd and Rachel (Sanden) Griswold. She attended Mabel High School. On Aug. 12, 1951, she married Wesley D. Kjome in Mabel. The couple lived in LaCrosse County, Wisc., for the past 17 years. Prior to that they lived in Spring Grove where she worked at the Tweeten/Lutheran Health Care Center and also in Spring Grove.
She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in West Salem and was a past president of the American Legion Post #249 Ladies Auxiliary of Spring Grove.
She is survived by her husband of West Salem; her mother, Rachel Griswold, of Mabel; five sons: Dana (Elaine) Kjome of Spring Grove, Rory Kjome of Viroqua, Wisc., Randy (Debra) Kjome, and Shaun (Janet) Kjome, both of West Salem, Wisc., and Kerry (Sandy) Kjome, of Onalaska, Wisc.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma (Carmen) Nohre of Purcellville, Va.; and one special aunt, Olga Christianson of Richfield, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Griswold, and her brother, Burr Griswold.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in West Salem, Wisc. Interment of cremains will be in the Hesper Public Cemetery, Hesper, Iowa, at a later date. Officiating will be Pastors J. David Bersagel and Mitzi Miyamoto.
Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove was in charge of arrangements.

George W. Klema, formerly of SV
George W. Klema, 91, of Chatfield, a retired Libby's employee, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield following a long illness. He had resided at the care center since August 1998.
He was born Dec. 19, 1908, in Manson, Iowa, and during World War II served in the Medical Corps. Before moving to the Chatfield area in 1953, he lived in Manson and Spillville, Iowa, Harmony, Spring Valley, Preston and Fountain. On Nov. 15, 1952, he married Myrtle Hanson in Preston. Mr. Klema was a farm laborer as a young man and then worked in the maintenance department at Libby's until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the Chatfield American Legion and VFW.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Dean and Marvin Klema, both of Fountain, Phillip Klema of Champlin, Minn., Dennis Hanson of Rochester and Alan Hanson of Augusta, Ga.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a brother, Donald of Kemp, Texas. He was preceded in death by a son, three brothers and a sister.
A graveside service was held Wednesday in Chatfield Cemetery, with the Rev. Eric Finsand officiating. Military rites will be conducted at graveside.
Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield was in charge of arrangements.
