Helen Fridy Haddon
GAINESVILLE, GA - Funeral service will be held at 2 PM Thursday, February 7, 2002 at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, #7 Shannon Dr., Greenville, SC for Helen Fridy Haddon, age 78, of Holly Dr., Gainesville, GA. The Rev. Wayne Horne will officiate.

Mrs. Haddon died Monday, February 4, 2002 at the Bell Minor Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Mrs. Haddon was born in Greenwood, SC to Mr. and Mrs. W. Allen Fridy. Mrs. Haddon graduated from Lander College in 1945 with a degree in sociology. She was a member of Who's Who of American Colleges and yearbook editor her senior year.
In 1947 she married Frank Haddon and raised their children in Greenville, SC. For 16 years Mrs. Haddon taught school in the Greenville County School System.
She was a devoted member of her Sunday School Class at Aldersgate U.M.C. and upon moving to Gainesville, GA in recent years the class was renamed in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Haddon as the Haddon Friendship Class.
In Gainesville Mrs. Haddon was a current member of the Open Door Sunday School class at the First Methodist Church. She devoted countless hours to her church and her community in volunteer work in both Greenville and Gainesville. Her unselfish dedication to her family, her friends and her church, her love of life and her true gift of compassion will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her husband, Frank J. Haddon, Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Jim McCoun, Gainesville; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Debra Haddon, Columbia, SC, and John and Sandra Haddon, Mt. Pleasant, SC; six grandchildren also survive.

Oscar (O.C.) Harris
LAURENS - Oscar (O.C.) Harris, age 83 formerly of 4572 Torrington Rd. and the widower of Frances Jackson Harris died Tuesday, Feb. 5th in the Martha Franks Retirement Center.
He was born in Clinton and was a son of the late Jerry and Marie Harvey Harris.
Mr. Harris was a retired employee of the Bailey Bank and the 3M Company. He was a member, Deacon, Treasurer and Sunday School teacher of the Bellview Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of W.W.II. He was also a member of the Palmetto Masonic Lodge #19.
He is survived by one son, Rev. Dr. James William Harris of Greenwood; two half brothers, Ernest Harris of Hickory Tavern and Jerry Harris of Joanna; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Harris was predeceased by one son, Carroll Jennings Harris and a half sister, Frances H. Fuller.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 7th at 3:00 p.m. in the Bellview Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the church.

Jefferson Davis LaGroon
GREENWOOD — Jefferson Davis LaGroon, 62, of 1407 Sanka St., widower of Betty Jean Freeman LaGroon, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in McCormick County, he was a son of the late Claude and Ella Harrison LaGroon. He was a member of Bailey Bethel A.M.E. Church, where he was a former usher board member and a former Sunday School secretary.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony LaGroon of Kennesaw, Ga., and Darrell Goode of Lithonia, Ga.; three daughters, Bernetha L. Culbreath and London M. Thomas, both of Ninety Six and Tammy M. LaGroon of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, James LaGroon of Greenwood and Robert Lee LaGroon of Callison; a sister, Eloise Terry of Greenwood; a niece reared in the home, Annie Lee Nicholson of Greenwood; a special friend, Juanita Glover; and 10 grandchildren.
Services are at 1 Thursday at Bailey Bethel A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. John Wesley Paul. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in the church cemetery.

ABBEVILLE — Ellen Crawford Mattison, 47, of 128 Adams Drive, wife of Joseph Mattison, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at the home of her mother.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of McKinley and Eune Bell London Crawford. She was a member of Haigler Street Church of Christ, a homemaker and a 1974 graduate of Abbeville High School.
Survivors include her husband of the home; her parents of Abbeville; a daughter, Adrienne Mattison of the home; six sister, Sandra Lee, Helen Brownlee, Cathleen Anderson, Linda Crawford and Cynthia Napoleon, all of Abbeville and Dorothy McCullum of Orlando, Fla.; an adopted sister, Christine Crawford of Abbeville; a brother, Marvin Crawford of Abbeville; and two grandchildren reared in the home, Marquis Mattison and Dre’Kevieuz Boggs.

WARE SHOALS — Gladys Elizabeth Moore, 82, of 937 Power House Road, died Tuesday at Self Regional Medical Center. She was born in Ware Shoals, a daughter of the late Elizabeth Leonhardt and Thomas G. Moore, Sr. Miss Moore was a secretary for 45 years at Riegel Textile Corporation, a graduate of Lander College and a member of Ware Shoals United Methodist Church.
Surviving are: one sister-in-law, Sybil G. Moore, with whom she made her home, two nieces, Louise Moore Ware, Ware Shoals, S.C., Bobby Jean Moore Stewart of Greenville, S.C. Also, one great nephew, three great nieces and one great-great niece.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 AM at Ware Shoals United Methodist Church with Rev. Gayle Summey officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery at 3 PM. Active pallbearers will be Randy McLean, Buddy Ware, Harvey McKee, Danny Ray Butler, Ansel Godfrey and Ray Thompson.

Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late T.C. and Bessie Brown Henderson. He was a former employee of Greenwood Mills, an Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.

GREENWOOD — Lillie Mae Gary Turman, 88, formerly of 508 Marion Ave., widow of Elder R. Turman, died at Anna Marie Nursing Home in North Augusta.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Casper and Lucinda Cheek Gary. She graduated from Brewer Normal School, retired as a practical nurse and was formerly employed by Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. A member of United House of Prayer of Greenwood, she was a former musician, secretary and Nurses Club president at the church. She was also a member of Westside Community Club, Women’s Aide Society No. 98 and the Order of the Eastern Star, Rochelle Chapter No. 298.
She was the last member of her immediate family.

Boyd Keith Sorrow
Mr. Boyd Keith Sorrow, age 46, of Destin, Florida, and formerly of Spartanburg, South Carolina, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, in Pensacola, Florida. Keith’s death was sudden. He was born in Greenwood, South Carolina, on August 10, 1957, to Reverend J.C. and Claudia Reynolds Sorrow, and had been a resident of the Northwest Florida area since July of 2003. He was a member of Masonic Lodge # 393 in Fairforest, South Carolina, and was Pentecostal Holiness in his faith. Mr. Sorrow was preceded in death by his son, Justin Chandler Sorrow and by a brother, James Russell Sorrow. Keith was an Operations Manager with Fed Ex Home Delivery in Pensacola, Florida. He graduated from Dorman High School in 1975 and attended Spartanburg Methodist College. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his loving wife of 27 years of marriage, Carolyn Fowler Sorrow, of Destin, Florida; Parents, Reverend J.C. and Claudia Sorrow, of Greenwood, South Carolina; Daughter, Carrie Marie Sorrow, of Destin, Florida; Sisters and brother-in-law, Micki Sorrow, of Greenwood, South Carolina, and Donna S. and Frankie Milford, of Abbeville, South Carolina; Grandchildren, Brandon Justin Scott and Jordyn Kelyn Sorrow, both of Destin, Florida; Father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jerry and Doris Fowler, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and a large extended family in South Carolina.

Harold “Cal” Calhoun Cheek, III
GRAY COURT, SC – Harold “Cal” Calhoun Cheek, III, age 16, of 9438 Hwy. 76 W., died Monday, July 12th in the Greenville Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Greenwood and was the son of Hal and Sarah Irvine Cheek of the home.
Cal was a rising senior and a member of FFA at the Laurens District 55 High School and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clinton.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his grandmothers, Anna S. Cheek of Clinton and Virginia B. Irvine of Laurens; a great aunt, Juanita Cheek of Gray Court. Cal was also a nephew of Alice Cheek Riddle and her husband Damon of Greenville and Rebecca Irvine Smith and her husband James of Columbia; a first cousin of Blaire Allison Riddle of Greenville; and a special friend, Candice Adair of Laurens.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday 4:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Clinton with burial at the Westview Memorial Park in Laurens.

Born in Cross Hill, he was a son of the late James Allen Crisp Sr. and Neta Crowe Crisp. He served in the Navy during the Korean conflict and retired from Laurens Glass. A Mason, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Palmetto Lodge No. 19.

ENOREE – Lois Harlan Banks, 86, formerly of 3 School Street died Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at National Health Care in Laurens.
A native of Lanford, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry B. and Florence M. Harlan and widow of Jeff A. Banks Sr. Mrs. Banks was a member of Lanford Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law: Patricia and Alex Babb of Enoree, Carolyn and Ken Cooper of Ninety Six; two sisters, Mary Spearman and Virginia Parsons, both of Enoree; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Babb was pre-deceased by two sons, Henry A. Banks and Allen Banks and a grandson, Mark Babb.

Born in Ware Shoals, S.C., he was a son of the late John Denver and Mable Louise Elledge Powell. He was retired from the Army and the Norfolk Southern Railroad.

Daniel Reid Jr.
McCORMICK — Daniel Reid Jr., 84, of Highway 81 North, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Born in Calhoun Falls, he was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and served as an elder in McCormick and New Jersey for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Reid of the home; 13 children; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is 3 p.m. Saturday at the McCormick Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, conducted by Brother Dennis Johnson.
