Lemuel “Bo” Madden Bell
LAURENS — Lemuel “Bo” Madden Bell, 86, widower of Winnie Mae Simpson Bell, of Indianapolis, IN died Wednesday, April 19, 2006.
Born on Nov. 24, 1919 in Greenwood, SC to the late Alma Wesley & Kate (Madden) Bell. Bo was a US Navy veteran of WWII, serving on the USS Columbia. He retired from General Motors/Chevrolet Body after 33 years of service. He was a life member & Past Commander of the Ernie Pyle VFW Post No. 1120, a life member of the Garfield American Legion Post No. 88 and the 40/8 Voiture Locale #145 and a member of the Capitol City Masonic Lodge No. 312 F & AM. He was an avid bowler.
Survivors include, two step-sons, Albert Clay Simpson and Delbert Ray Simpson; a sister, Margaret Bell Bryan; two nephews, Randy and Bill Bryan; one niece, Ann Parker; 7 grandchildren, 10 great grand-children and one great-great grandson. He was predeceased by a brother William Bell.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 AM Monday, April 24, 2006 at The Kennedy Mortuary.

McCORMICK — Fred Douglas Searles Sr., 91, widower of Ruth Martin Searles, died Thursday, April 27, 2006 at the Hospice House of the Piedmont. Born in McCormick, he was a son of the late George Searles Sr. and Lois Moragne Searles. He was a retired construction worker and former member of Hosannah Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Fred Searles Jr. and two daughters, Jessie Mae James and Frances Searles, all of Buffalo, N.Y.; two brothers, James Searles of Augusta, Ga., and George Searles Jr. of Buffalo; a sister, Doris Quarles of Buffalo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family is at his home, 6647 Highway 28 S.

WARE SHOALS — Mary Bayne Taylor, 83, of 18071 Highway 25 N., widow of Luther “Johnny” Taylor, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Hospice House in Greenwood. Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late James L. and Ellie Cason Bayne. She retired from Riegel Textile Corp. after 49 years and was a member of Sharon Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was secretary and treasurer for 52 years. Survivors include a sister, Barbara Stallings of Honea Path.
Services are 3 p.m. today at Parker-White Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Chris Stansel and Robert Boland. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers are nephews.

James Miller Davis, 49, resident of 881 N. Belair Road, Evans, Ga., died at the home of his father, 206 E. Sproles Ave. on Sunday, June 18, 2006. Born September 22, 1956 in Greenwood, he was a son of William M. Davis, Sr. and the late June Hughes Davis. He was a graduate of Piedmont Technical College and was an automobile sales associate. Mr. Davis was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Evans. Surviving in addition to his father of Greenwood are two daughters, Jennifer Stafford and Laura Davis, both of Mooresville, NC; two sons, William Davis and Zack Davis, both of Evans, GA; two brothers, William M. Davis, Jr. of Aurora, CO and Phillip M. Davis of Hampstead, NC; and one grandson, Tyler Davis of Mooresville, NC. A private memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday at Blyth Funeral Home with Rev. George Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens at a later date. Born in McCormick County, he was a son of James Jennings and Beatrice White Jennings. He was a 1972 McCormick High School graduate and was employed with the S.E.C. gas pipe laying company of Atlanta. He was a member of the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.
Survivors include his parents of Plum Branch; two daughters, Natasha Frambrough and Tameka Polly, both of McCormick; two sisters, Harvey (Lizzie) Tucker and Suffie Jennings, both of Plum Branch; his companion, Melissa Jennings of the home; three grandchildren.

Joseph Alfred Tullis, 67, a beloved father, has lost his struggle with cancer and went on to share his eternity with his wife Martha Ann Mooney Tullis, while surrounded by his family, on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18, 2006 at his home.
Born in Abbeville, he was a son of the late John Henry Tullis and Evelyn Maynard Cheek. He worked at Greenwood Mills for 27 years and he last worked at Capsugel. Known by “Joe”, he was an avid golfer, love to fish and devoted to his dogs. Mr. Tullis loved his family and was a member of New Life Baptist Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Tammy Gary and husband Les, and Twila Creech and husband Keith, both of Waterloo, Jamie Holley and husband Kerry, of Hodges, and Tammy Lewis, of Greenwood; two sons, Jefferson Tullis, of Waterloo, and Bobby Joe Mooney, of the home; a sister, Jeraleine Cheek Burton, of Hodges; a brother John Henry “Sonny” Tullis Jr., of Gainesville, Ga; a special nephew, William “Buddy” Hitt, of Greenwood; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He retired from Chiquola Mills and was a World War II Army veteran.

Born in Holly Hill, he was a son of the late John W. and Louise Randall Ledbetter. He was a Greenwood High School graduate, attended Gordon Military School and was a Navy veteran. Former owner of Ledbetter’s Pest Control Inc. in Greenwood, he was a member of the Greenwood Smokers Barbecue Team, a certified barbecue judge and a former member of Greenwood Jaycees. He was of the Baptist faith.

Bud Pendergrass
GREENWOOD — George Edward “Bud” Pendergrass, 74, resident of 113 Crestmont Drive, husband of Ann Ray Pendergrass, died July 6, 2006 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood County, March 28, 1932, he was a son of the late George E. Pendergrass, Sr. and Edna Harling Marx. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and The Citadel. Mr. Pendergrass retired in 1974 from the US Air Force with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He flew combat missions in Vietnam and served as an Aerospace Physiologist. He was a recipient of the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service and the Wiley Post Awards. In 1974, he returned to Greenwood where he owned and operated the family clothing business.
Bud was a long time Boy Scout where he obtained the rank of Eagle and was recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He also served in various capacities within the District and Council level of scouting.
A member of Main Street United Methodist Church, he was also a member of American Legion Post #20, Voiture #435 of the 40 & 8 and the Greenwood Lions Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Carol P. Bennett of Rock Hill and a son, Jay E. and wife, Rhonda J. Pendergrass of Greenwood; two grandsons, Larkin and Jones Pendergrass and a half-sister, Gail Pendergrass of Greenwood; a brother-in-law, Robert R. “Bobby” Ray, II of Greenwood.
Mr. Pendergrass was prede-ceased by a sister, Barbara Ann Pendergrass.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Saturday at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. James Dennis officiating.
Burial with military honors will be in Edgewood Cemetery.

Born November 23, 1921 in Keo, Arkansas, she was a daughter of the late William Icing and Chessie Dale Clarke Prince. She was a homemaker and member of Good Hope Baptist Church in Saluda.
Surviving are two daughters, Bernice Williams of the home and Judy Baird of Greenwood; two sons, Russell Williams of Myrtle Beach and Johnny Williams of Waterloo; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by two sons, Tommy Williams and Buster Williams.

ABBEVILLE, SC — Lorena Johnson Evans, 90, lifetime resident of Abbeville Co. SC, went to be with the Lord on June 29, 2006. Mrs. Evans was the daughter of the late Walter Eugene and Lorena Beacham Johnson. Mrs. Evans was a graduate of Furman University, where she majored in Music Education with an emphasis in Violin.
She taught third grade for twenty four years at Greenville Street School in Abbeville.
She was active in Christian service at Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Abbeville, SC and at the Due West ARP Church.
She resided at the Due West Retirement Center for the last eighteen years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Evans, Jr.
Rena Evans is survived by sons Charles Evans and his wife Carolyn of Hendersonville, NC and son Benjamin Evans of Atlanta, GA; two grand-daughters Holly Moore and her husband Blake of Greer, SC and Christy Whitehurst and her husband Michael of East Flat Rock, NC and great-grand-children Benjamin, Bailey and Bryson Whitehurst.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday July 2, 2006 at 3:00 PM from the Due West ARP Church in Due West, SC with the Rev.’s Grady Love and Arnold Johnson officiating. The burial will follow in Lebanon Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Abbeville, SC.
The body is at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home, Abbeville, SC. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2:00 until 3:00 PM in the social hall at The Due West ARP Church prior to services.

ABBEVILLE, SC — Rev. James M. Newman, 82, of 1256 Haigler Street Ext., Abbeville, husband of Jeane Ankerman Newman, died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Columbia, SC to the late Charles E. and Mattie Mattox Newman. After serving his country during WWII in the US Navy, he served the Lord as a Baptist Minister for over 45 years; pastoring churches in Iron Station, NC; Honea Path, SC; and Ridgeville, SC. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville.
Surviving Rev. Newman is his wife of the home; one daughter, Sandra N. Martin and her husband Robert of Abbeville; two sons, Richard Newman and his wife Debra of Philadelphia, PA; and Douglas Newman and his wife Deborah of Greenwood, SC, six grand-children, and seven great-grand-children.
Funeral services are 11:00AM Saturday, July 1, 2006 at the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with the Rev. Reiny Koschel officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
