Forrest ‘Frosty’ Dean Richard
Forrest Dean Richard, known as Frosty, the first born son of Herman and Mable Ella Street Richard, was born Jan. 17, 1910, on a farm near Humeston and died Jan. 4, 2002, at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon. He was 91.
He married Ruth Anna Cook in 1933. The couple became the parents of three children, Glenys Jean, Donald Forrest and Dell Alan.
Mr. Richard started in the oil business with his father in 1930. The business later became known as Humeston Oil. When his father retired in 1945, his brother, Keith joined him in the business for nine years. In 1960, his son, Don, joined the company and it later became known as Richard Oil. Mr. Richard was a friendly, honest and fair businessman. His customers were treated with respect, as were his employees.
Through the years he financially assisted a lot of Humeston kids who had gone through some tough times. This attitude is also reflected in the scholarships given to Mormon Trail seniors who graduated in the last 25 years. He was loyal to Humeston, always insisting on shopping at home when it would support the local businesses and schools.
He never saw a sport he didn’t like. He missed very few Humeston High School or Mormon Trail athletic events before he was physically unable to attend. It was no secret that he was an Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinal fan. His family grew up with games being broadcast on radio and later on television during the seasons.
He liked to remind people that Ronald Reagan visited in their home in 1934. Harry Caray and Jim Zabel seemed like family. He outlived his golfing buddies and then he, too, had to give up the game.
Mr. Richard was active in the American Legion, acting as service officer many years. He served as Maynard Coffey’s driver and companion when Mr. Coffey was state Commander of the American Legion in Iowa.
Mr. Richard was on the board of directors of the Independent Oil Jobbers (later Petroleum Marketers) and Citizens Bank.
He coached American Legion and Little League baseball. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Masons and the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a granddaughter, Michelle Lynn Richard; a son-in-law, Charles S. Bittick; two brothers, Glenn Richard and wife Doris and Keith Richard and wife Marie and a brother-in-law, Don Bright.
Mr. Richard is survived by his wife, of 68 years, Ruth of Humeston; a daughter, Glenys Bittick Lynch and her husband, David Lynch, of West Des Moines; two sons, Don Richard and his wife, Sondra Richard, of Humeston and Dell Richard and his wife, Mary Richard, of Iowa City; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Erma Niday and her husband, Louis Niday, and Mildred Bright, all of Humeston; many relatives and a host of friends.
