Eva Ruth Vasey
Eva Ruth Vasey, daughter of Clarence Emmett Smith and Lillie Gladys Kitchen Smith, was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Ogden and died March 6, 2002, at the Westview Care Center in Indianola. She was 84.
She grew up in the Ogden area and received her education in the Story County schools. She married Ivan Albert Vasey on May 20, 1935, in Des Moines. The couple moved to the Truro area just after they were married where they lived the rest of their lives. They became the parents of 11 children, Ruby, Alice, Shirley, Ralph, Charles, Janet, Bob, Betty, Bonnie, Mary and Steve.
Eva liked to can and garden. She also liked to hang wallpaper which she did for many years.
She was affiliated with the Congregational United Church of Christ in Truro.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; daughter, Shirley Appen-zeller; three sisters, Opal Smith Borton, Gladys Smith Martin and Merle Smith Borton and two brothers, Lawrence Smith and Everett Smith.
Mrs. Vasey is survived by six daughters, Ruby Adamson and her husband, Devere Adamson, of Norwalk, Alice Champlin and her husband, Larry Champlin, of Indianola, Janet Miller and her husband, Max Miller, of Indianola, Betty Griffiths and her husband, Bob Griffiths, of Norwalk, Bonnie Groth and her husband, John Groth of Prole and Mary Wenck and her husband, Randy Wenck, of Prole; four sons, Ralph Vasey and his wife, Betty Vasey, of St.Charles, Charles Vasey and his wife, Judy Vasey, of Norwalk, Bob Vasey and his wife, Connie Vasey, of Truro and Steve Vasey and his wife, Marcia Vasey, of Truro; 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Smith and his wife, Shirley Smith of Nevada; a son-in-law, Terry Appenzeller of Springfield, Mo.; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were March 9 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. John Long of Indianola officiating. Carla Vasey, organist, accompanied Ronda Lowry as she sang The Old Rugged Cross, In the Garden and How Great Thou Art.
Casket bearers were Craig Adamson, Allan Appenzeller, David Vasey, Marty Miller, Roger Vasey, Dennis Vasey, Gary Griffiths, Brian Griffiths, Troy Wenck and Kevin Wenck. Interment was in Young Cemetery in Truro.

Margaret Jane Watson
Margaret Jane Redman Watson, daughter of George C. and Carrie Ann Smith Redman, was born Feb. 6, 1905, at home south of Van Wert. and died March 3, 2002, at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola. She was 97.
She married Clyde Wesley Watson on Feb. 6, 1924, in Van Wert. They became the parents of two children, Lowell James and Lois Louise. She lived on their farm south of Van Wert her entire married life. She moved to Casual Living in Osceola in January of 1999.
She was a member of the Van Wert United Methodist Church and was very active in United Methodist Women. Not only has her family enjoyed her cooking, but she shared it with many others.
She helped serve many meals at the church and also at the Humeston Sale Barn.
She worked at the Van Wert School in the kitchen, Hanaco and the Red Rooster at Weldon Corner.
When she wasn’t cooking or spoiling her grandchildren, you could find her at the bowling alley in Leon. She belonged to a bowling league for many years.
She took great pride in her garden, chickens and cattle.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; sister, Hazel Virginia Redman; brother, Harry Redman; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Perry and Ware Chastain and granddaughter, Janet Marlene Eddy.
Mrs. Watson is survived by a son, Lowell Watson and his wife, Oveda Watson, of Sun Valley Lake at Ellston; a daughter, Lois Eddy and her husband, Oral Eddy, of Osceola; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, George “Jack” S. Redman and his wife, Irene Redman, of Osceola and Roland “Jimmie” Redman and his wife, Betty Redman, of Van Wert; two sisters, Louise Perry of Van Wert and Viola Chastain of Leon; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were March 8 at the Van Wert United Methodist Church, the Rev. Roger Wolsey officiating. Sandra Fullerton, organist, accompanied Charletta Durell as she sang How Great Thou Art, Whispering Hope and Tell Mother I’ll Be there.
Casket bearers were John Crouch, Marlin Eddy, William Eddy, Brian Eddy, Lane Eddy and Michael Watson.Interment was in the Van Wert Cemetery. Arrangements were by Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni.

Alice James
Alice Leone James, daughter of Charles Henry Whitehead and Edith Estella Jones Whitehead, was born Aug. 29, 1908, near Truro, and died March 13, 2004, at her home in Osceola. She was 95.
Mrs. James graduated from Murray High School. She married Lawrence James on Sept. 16, 1933, in Albia.
Mrs. James was the first president of the First Christian Church’s Women’s Fellowship, serving from 1947-1949. She and her husband Lawrence were active members of the First Christian Church in Osceola for more than 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence; two brothers, Clarence Whitehead, and Ted Whitehead and wife Mercedese Whitehead; one sister, Mabel Woods and husband Luther Woods.
Mrs. James is survived by one brother, Charles Whitehead and wife Isabelle of Lorimor; one sister, Gladys Whitehead of Lorimor; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held March 17 at Kale Funeral Home, Pastor Marty Burgus and the Rev. John Dale officiating. Organist was Virginia Reynolds and soloist was Emil Rinderspacher. Musical selections were How Great Thou Art and He Touched Me.
Casket bearers were Todd Whitehead, Dennis Whitehead, Rocky Roberts, Randy Worth, Teddy Whitehead and Mark Dale.
Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola.
Addison Bowlsby
Clifton Addison Bowlsby, fourth child of Clarence Ralph Bowlsby and Lovisa Viola Nussbaum Bowlsby, was born Oct. 15, 1916, on his parents’ farm in Ward Township in rural Clarke County. He died March 14, 2004, at the Clarke County Hospital. He was 87.
Mr. Bowlsby attended rural school at Ward No. 8 and graduated from Osceola High School in 1935. He studied Normal Training at Osceola Junior College.
He began farming in 1936, and worked as a farm hand in northern and eastern Iowa. In 1942, he purchased a farm neighboring his parents’ farm. This farm eventually encompassed 300 acres. In later years he purchased the family farm.
Mr. Bowlsby married Lois Edgington on Feb. 3, 1946, at the First Christian Church in Osceola. They lived their entire married life on their farm, moving a few feet from the old farmhouse to a new house in 1974. They became parents of one daughter, Betty.
After suffering a debilitating stroke in 2001, Mr. Bowlsby moved to the Extended Care Unit at the Clarke County Hospital.
Mr. Bowlsby worked diligently to improve and preserve his land. He felt a responsibility to pass his land on to the next generation in better condition than when he purchased it. He was recognized in his efforts with a Conservation Award.
In the 1950s he operated a bluegrass harvesting business. In later years he had a nursery, sod and dirt business. Through the years, he employed a number of young men, including neighbor boys, to help with his farming operation. His honesty and strong work ethic served as a role model for many of them.
As a young man, he was active in Farm Bureau Young Members. He later served on the board of directors of the Clarke County Pork Producers and was chairman of the Whitebreast Watershed Project.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1996; his parents; his sister, Ardis Ramsey; three brothers, Russell, in infancy, Pearl Bowlsby and Clyde Bowlsby.
He is survived by his daughter, Betty Lawson, and her husband Vance Lawson, of Creston; his brother, Carl Bowlsby of Polk City; two sisters-in-law, Ava Bowlsby and Dorthy Bowlsby, both of Osceola; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Bowlsby are today, Thursday, at the Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. Phil Coe of the First Christian Church officiating.
Soloist is Emil Rinderspacher, and musical selections are In the Garden and The Old Rugged Cross.
Casket bearers are Dennis Ramsey, Keith Bowlsby, Ron McCloney, Dick Ramsey, Everett McCloney Jr. and Rick McCloney. Honorary bearers are Emerson Osgood, Frank McCloney, Jack Traster, Tony Glenn and William L. Brown. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola.
Joseph Saddoris Sr.
Joseph Harrison Saddoris Sr., son of Pearl Saddoris and Elizabeth Twombley Saddoris, was born Nov. 25, 1908, in Lacelle, and died March 12, 2004, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 95.
Mr. Saddoris grew up and attended country school near Lacelle in Clarke County. He married Evelyn Louise Moran on Jan. 2, 1929, in Corning, and the couple became the parents of six children.
Mr. Saddoris was inducted into the United States Navy on April 13, 1944, and served in the Seabees in Guam during World War II. He retired in 1970 with more than 25 years of Naval service, including the Naval Reserves.
Mr. and Mrs. Saddoris farmed in Clarke County until 1934 when he began working for the Iowa State Highway Commission in Osceola until 1951. He also served as the city of Oskaloosa’s streets commissioner from 1951 to 1973. He retired in 1980 from Garden and Associates Engineering.
He moved to Osceola in 1998 following the death of Mrs. Saddoris.
Mr. Saddoris was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion Post 34 in Oskaloosa, the Fleet Reserve Association and a member of the First Christian Church in Osceola. He enjoyed woodworking, watching the Chicago Cubs and driving with Mrs. Saddoris through the countryside.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant daughter, Frances Louise in 1931; son, Harold Eugene in 1995; two grandchildren, Steven and Linda Saddoris; six brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Saddoris is survived by son, Joseph H. Saddoris Jr. and wife Ruth Saddoris of Ames; son, Donald L. Saddoris and wife Mary Saddoris of Goreville, Ill.; son, Ronald J. Saddoris and wife Cathy Saddoris of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Patricia J. Petersen and husband Richard Petersen of Clinton; brother, Harold L. Saddoris of Illinois City, Ill.; sister-in-law, Naomi Saddoris of Osceola; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews including nephew Darrell Mateer and wife Vicky Mateer of Murray and their son Brian, who gave him care in the last six years.
Funeral services were March 17 at Kale Funeral Home, the Rev. Hugh Stone officiating. Organist was Virginia Reynolds and soloist was Emil Rinderspacher. Musical selections were Amazing Grace, Precious Lord Take My Hand and On Eagles Wings. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Matthew Petersen, Daniel Saddoris, Jerry Saddoris, Brian Mateer, Ryan Charkowski and Dalen Jones. Honorary bearers were Donald Saddoris, Jennifer Petersen, Christopher Saddoris, Joey Saddoris, John Saddoris, Lynn Saddoris, LuAnn Jones, Carol Saddoris, Mitchell Saddoris and Susan Hinks.
Mildred Jenine Brannon
Mildred Jenine Brannon, the daughter of Norman Brannon and Beulah Miler Brannon, was born Sept. 7, 1924, in Osceola and died March 13, 2003, at her home in Osceola. She was 78.
Miss Brannon graduated from Des Moines Technical High School. She found pleasure in learning and reading. She attended several colleges over the years and earned several degrees including a law degree. She worked as an office manager for a magazine publishing company in California before she retired.
She lived in Oklahoma, Texas and Denver, Colo. before moving to California in the mid-1950s. She returned to Osceola in 1995.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant brother, Raymond.
Miss Brannon is survived by two brothers, Marion “Bud” Brannon and his wife, Mildred Brannon, of Osceola and Martin Ellis and his wife, Joan Ellis, of Des Moines; as well as nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Graveside services for Miss Brannon were held March 18 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola, Pastor Chuck DeVos of Osceola officiating.
Casket bearers were Tom Cole, Bobby Cole, T.J. Cole, Caleb Cole, Tony Britt and Ryan Britt. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery at Osceola.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Hazel Kathryn Messamer Price
Hazel K. Messamer Price, daughter of Theodore Roy and Beulah Zellers Messamer, was born Jan. 6, 1908, in Colfax Township in Dallas County and died March 16, 2003, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center. She was 95.
She spent most of her youth in Dallas County where she attended country school and graduated from Adel High School in 1926.
She married Harley Price on Feb. 27, 1932, and they became the parents of two daughters. Mrs. Price lived in Clarke and Warren Counties for 23 years where her children were raised, received their education and were married.
Mrs. Price was a member of Panther Creek Church of the Brethren all of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Lawrence, Maurice and Theodore Jr.; a sister, Fay Mitchell; three infant siblings and a son-in-law, Paul Doherty.
Mrs. Price is survived by her two daughters, Lavon Doherty of Waukee and May Hall and her husband, Don Hall, of Hemet, Calif; four grandchilden, Kathryn Luth of Olathe, Kan.; Linda Smith of Adel, Tamara Tkach, Fontana, Calif. and Teresa Elkholy of Castaic, Calif.; eight great- grandchilden; and two brothers, Phillip Price of Adel and Charles Price of Indianapolis.
Memorial services for Mrs. Price will be at 11 a.m. March 22 at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren northwest of Adel. Graveside services were held March 18 at the church cemetery.
Arrangements were by Fisher-Aldrich Funreral Home in Adel.
William Russell Seymour
William Russell Seymour, son of William Everett and Alta Cecil Butcher Seymour, was born March 23,1919, in Garden Grove Township in Decatur County and died March 12, 2003, at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines. He was 83.
Known both as Bill and Russell, he was raised in Davis City and graduated from high school there.
He married Dorothy Mae Pettis in Rawlins, Wyo. They moved from Wyoming to Oklahoma, then to Washington State and to Council, Idaho where their first son, Russell Eugene, was born. They became homesick and returned to Iowa where their second son, Don Dean, was born. Mr. Seymour was currently living in Indianola.
Mr. Seymour worked for the railroad for 38 years. He retired at age 60 in March of 1979 as yardmaster. After retiring he had the time to do what he loved, hunting, fishing, and traveling. He also did some farming.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Osceola and Yardmasters of America Union.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in January 1990; a son Russell in Oct. 1990; three sisters, Alta Eulalia Boswell, Minnie Marie George and Mary Rosettie Ricks and a brother Henry Coral Seymour.
Mr. Seymour is survived by his son, Don Seymour and his wife, Barbara Seymour, of Mesa, Ariz.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held March 15 at the Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, the Rev. Jud Stover officiating. Casket bearers were Bill Cox, Ted Cox, Bart Hafner, Brett Hafner, Chet Hafner and Randy Seymour. Burial was in the Van Wert Cemetry.
Marvin Phillip Stephenson
Marvin Phillip Stephenson, son of Fred and Helen Neidt Stephenson was born June 17, 1926, in rural Clarke County and died March 15, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 76.
He received his education in a rural Clarke County school.
As a young man he helped his mother with the farm and then became a heavy equipment mechanic for more than 40 years. He worked on various construction projects throughout the Midwest. In 1988 a work- related injury forced Mr. Stephenson to retire. After he retired he opened a repair shop in Promise City and worked on small farm equipment and helped fix cars for local residents. He moved to Seymour and continued his repair shop for a few years before retiring completely.
He liked to fix-up old cars, fish in local farm ponds and spend time and reminisce with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Merlyn Stephenson and three brothers-in-law.
Mr. Stephenson is survived by his wife, Dixie Stephenson of Seymour; two sons, Roger Stephenson and his wife, Melinda, of Blue Springs, Mo. and Dennis Stephenson and his wife, Penny, of Gladstone, Mo.; four daughters, Phyllis Paul and her husband, George, of Osceola, Marilyn Storm of Muskogee, Okla., Nancy Irvin and her husband, Arthur, of Venton, Va. and Mary Stephenson and her husband, Jeff Silkiner, of Dallas, Texas.
He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Melissa Kingland of North English, Melanie Mitchell of Creston, Sue Ann Glenn of Lafayette, Colo., Christopher Brown and Garret Storm, both of Muskogee, Okla., JoAnn Zebley of Symrna, Del, Tim Irvine of Venton, Kari Austin of Blue Springs, Jaclyn Stephenson of Independence, Mo., and Austin Stephenson of Gladstone; two step- grandchildren, George R. Paul of Winterset and Dory Bakley and of Osceola and 14 great-grandchildren.
Other relatives include a brother, Melvin Stephenson and his wife, Margaret, of Bettendorf; three sisters, Marian Price and her husband, Hubert, of Osceola, Maxine Cisler and her husband, Allen, of Bettendorf and Marjorie Drorbaugh of Creston; four sisters-in-law, Nancy Stephenson of Rockford, Deon Smaniotto and Jennie Smaniotto, both of Seymour and Elaine Reese and her husband, Lyle, of Nyssa, Ore.; a brother-in-law, Dennis Fowler and his wife, Sharon, Nyssa.
Funeral services for Mr. Stephenson are at 10:30 a.m.today (March 20) at the Randolph Funeral Home in Seymour, Pastor Merle Prater of the Seymour Church of Christ officiating.
Casket bearers are George Paul, Aldo Smaniotto, John Schneider, Gary Smaniotto, Jeff Silkiner and Jeff Kingland, Interment is in the Southlawn Cemetery at Seymour.
Arrangements were by Randolph Funeral Home, Corydon and Seymour.
Barbara Jo Ann Proctor
Barbara JoAnn Proctor, daughter of Clinton Roosevelt Heuer and Bessie Mae Ridnour Heuer, was born July 4, 1943, in Gravity and died March 16, 2002, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon. She was 58.
She was educated in Page County and worked as a physical therapist’s aide and as a nurse’s aide. She was the mother of three children.
Mrs. Proctor had lived in Leon for the past four years. She lived in Garden Grove for four to five years and had lived in Weldon for 20 years before that.
Her family was an important part of her life. She liked fishing and playing cards with friends and family. She was always willing to help others.
Mrs. Proctor was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Osceola.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son and a granddaughter, Amanda Diggins.
Mrs. Proctor is survived by her son, Everett Proctor and his wife, Malinda Proctor, of Grand River; a daughter, Kimberly Diggins and her husband, Mike Diggins, of Marshalltown; four grandchildren, Garth Proctor of Grand River and Jeremy Diggins and Michelle and Christy Diggins of Marshalltown; two brothers, Clarion Heuer of Clarinda and Gerald Heuer of Kentucky; other relatives and a host of friends.
A graveside service and burial of the cremains were at 11 a.m. March 20 in Maple Hill Cemetery at Osceola with Elder Jeff Dowell of Bedford officiating.
Dean Ray Halvorsen
Dean Ray Halvorsen, son of George Fredrick Halvorsen and Ella Sophia Minderman Halvorsen was born May 9, 1936, near Palmyra, Neb. and died March 16, 2002, following a long battle with cancer. He was 65.
He married Mary Kae Williamson on Oct. 30, 1955, in Liberty and they became the parents of two children, Mark and Deana.
Mr. Halvorsen had been a resident of Clarke County since 1941 when his family moved here from Nebraska. He received his early education in the Snyder Country School and graduated from Osceola High School in 1955. He was a lifelong farmer and was also employed in the maintenance department at Farm Bureau in West Des Moines. He had been retired just six months when he died.
Mr. Halvorsen was a member of the Osceola Eagles Lodge, National Farmers Organization and the former Liberty United Methodist Church. He enjoyed farming and spending winters in Scottsdale, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Calvin Halvorsen.
Mr. Halvorsen is survived by a son, Mark Halvorsen and his fiance, Karen Herschleb, of Hawley, Minn.; a daughter, Deana Grasmick and herr husband, Tom Grasmick of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Eric Grasmick of Cedar Falls, Nicole Grasmick of Waterloo and Kendra Stuckey of Marietta, Okla.; two brothers, Allen Halvorsen and his wife, Phyllis Halvorsen, of Indianola and Vallee “Sam” Halvorsen and his wife, Mary Ann Halvorsen, of Osceola; a sister, Helen Ernst and her husband, Dwaine Ernst, of Adair; a sister-in-law, Vicky Halvorsen of Eldora; as well as other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services and interment were held in Maple Hill Cemetery at Osceola on March 19, the Rev. Skip Rushing of the New Virginia United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Eric Grasmick, Kurt Halvorsen, Rick Halvorsen, Kevin Ernst, Scott Halvorsen and Clint Bauer.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola.

LeRoy ‘Tad’ Johnston
LeRoy “Tad” Barnes Johnston, son of Clyde H. and Mary LuCretia Barnes Johnston, was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Afton and died March 14, 2002, at Crest Haven Care Center in Creston. He was 90.
He married Wanda Arlene Henrichs on Feb. 17, 1934, in Ellston. They became the parents of one son, Raymond.
His lifelong love of farming began in Ringgold County where he farmed for one year then moved to Clarke County for two years and to Union County for five years before they returned to Clarke County where he has farmed for the past 60 years. They have lived at their present farm for 52 years.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Ronald Johnston; four brothers-in-law, Wayne, Edwin, Marvin and Dwight Henrichs; three sisters-in-law, Alice Allen, Cora Henrichs and Helen Henrichs and a brother-in-law, Harold Allen.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife of 68 years, Arlene Johnston, of Murray; a son, Raymond Johnston and his wife, Betty Johnston, of Murray; four grandchildren, Randall Johnston and his wife, Heidi Johnston, Sue Turner and her husband, Randy Turner, all of Murray, Lynn Hauge and her husband, Kirk Hauge, of Osceola and Ann Leathers and her husband, Scott Leathers, of Ollie; eight great-grandchildren, Drew, Billie, Matthew and Megan Johnston and Landon Turner, all of Murray, Jenny and Amy Hauge of Osceola and Steve Hauge and his wife, Nancy Hauge, of Huxley; one great-great-granddaughter, Bailey Hauge of Huxley; four sisters-in-law, Velma Johnston and Genevieve Henrichs, both of Creston, Hazel Henrichs of Murray and Mary Ann Henrichs of Osceola; a brother-in-law, Don Henrichs of Osceola; as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were March 18 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, Pastors Dwayne Henrichs and Gil Hamilton officiating. Pennie Gonseth, organist, played How Great Thou Art and Amazing Grace.
Casket bearers were Gary Dugger, Gary Robins, Charles Linhart, Raymond Nelson, Keith Nelson and Quenten Johnson. Honorary casket bearers were B.L.Wright, Earl Latham, George Simmerman, Clarence Orfield, Delbert Davidson and Ronald Jackson. Interment was in Murray Cemetery.
Helen M. Lewis
Helen M. Lewis, daughter of William and Georgia Culley Orfield was born June 2, 1913, in Decatur City and died March 14, 2002, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston. She was 88.
She graduated from Murray High School. She married Lawrence Fredrick Perry on Nov. 23, 1931, in Unionville, Mo. He died Aug. 21, 1965. She married Fred D. Lewis on June 27, 1969, at the First Christian Church in Creston.
They lived on their farm near Ellston until 1971, when they moved to Creston.
She was a homemaker and a seamstress at Snowdons lingerie factory in Osceola for more than 25 years. Her hobbies included a love of sewing and flowers.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, the hospital auxiliary and the Rebekah Lodge.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her first husband, Lawrence; her second husband, Fred, on Jan. 30, 1998; a daughter, Beverly M. Perry; a son, Fredrick A. Perry; one grandson; a great-grandson; three brothers, Paul Orfield, Charles Orfield and Kenneth Orfield; a sister, Fannie Orfield and a stepdaughter, Shirley Lorimor.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by five daughters, Baunadine Foland and her husband, Robert Foland, of Lorimor, W. Louise Driskill and her husband, Don Driskill, of Murray, Cora Kelly and her husband, Mike Kelly, of Fisher, Ill., Carolyn Morey-Romero of Adel and Linda Williams and her husband, Jack Williams Jr., of Des Moines; a stepdaughter, Laurella Scott of Denver Colo.; 20 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence Orfield of Murray and Wayne Orfield and his wife, Lorna Orfield, of Indianola; two sisters, Dorothy Wake and her husband, Raymond Wake, of Thayer and Karen Stephens of Des Moines; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were March 19 at Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family Funeral Service in Creston, Pastor Dwayne Henrichs and Dr. Byron Lamun of the First Christian Church in Creston officiating. Interment was in Murray Cemetery.
Mary Elaine Davenport Reynolds
Mary Elaine Davenport Reynolds, daughter of Thomas Edward Davenport and Rose Mae Marquis Davenport, was born Dec. 5, 1913, in Woodburn and died March 18, 2002, at the Osceola Nursing and Rehab Center in Osceola. She was 89.
She graduated from Osceola High School and taught school for a few years in a country school between Weldon and Woodburn. She married Fred Reynolds on Sept. 27, 1934, in Leon and they became the parents of three children, Judith Kay, Charles Edward and Kathleen Anne.
Mrs. Reynolds was a homemaker and lived in Clarke County until she moved to Des Moines in 1962. She returned to Osceola in 1991. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and working in her garden. She loved to listen to music.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Fred in 1963; grandson, Shane Reed; two sisters Junia Rose McGuire and Catherine Flynn; a nephew, Randy Davenport and a niece Linda Davenport; a sister-in-law, Hope Davenport and a brother-in-law, Russell Flynn.
Mrs. Reynolds is survived by two daughters, Judith Kay Stubbs and her husband, Vance Stubbs, of Des Moines and Kathleen Anne Reed and her husband, Dorman Reed, of Pamona, Kan.; a son, Charles Edward Reynolds and his wife, Donna Reynolds, of St. Louis, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Debbie Page and her husband, Randy Page and Elaine Danilson, all of Des Moines; Roxann Smith and her husband, Tom Smith, of Norwalk; Mike Reynolds and his wife, Laura Reynolds of St. Louis, Mo. and April Fischer and her husband Joe Fischer of Barnhart, Mo., Brenda Ekeland of Ottawa, Kan., Valorie Reed of Kansas City, Kan. and Karen Baldock and her husband, Kevin Baldock, of Waukee; 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include a brother, Wayne Davenport of Des Moines; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Reynolds of Des Moines, Lela Reynolds of Baxter and Phyllis Reynolds of Decatur; a brother-in-law, Kenny McGuire of Centerville; several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Maple Hill Cemetery at Osceola, the Rev. Phil Coe of the First Christian Church officiating.
Visitation will be open after 9 a.m. Friday with family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola
Russell McCloney
Clyde Russell McCloney, son of Clarence Clyde McCloney and Laura Pettit McCloney, was born Jan. 17, 1914, in Osceola and died March 16, 2002, at Osceola Nursing and Rehab Center. He was 88.
He was a life long resident of Osceola. He married Louise Culbertson on Aug. 10, 1940, in Corydon. The couple became the parents of two children, Robert and Betty.
He worked for Dr. Harkin for 45 years, retiring in January of 1976.
Mr. McCloney was a member of the First Christian Church in Osceola.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Everett and Wayne McCloney and a sister, Lillian Butler.
Mr. McCloney is survived by his wife, Louise McCloney of Osceola; a son, Robert R. McCloney and his wife, Sandra McCloney, of Montezuma; a daughter, Betty Jean Dickey and her husband, Dwayne Dickey, of Indianola; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were March 19 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. Phil Coe of Osceola officiating. Belva White, organist, accompanied Emil Rinderspacher as he sang How Great Thou Art and Mansion Over the Hilltop.
Casket bearers were Everett McCloney Jr., Richard McCloney, Roger McCloney, Ronald McCloney, Craig McCloney and Dennis McCloney. Honorary bearers were Frank McCloney and Kenneth Butler. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola.
Memorial contributions may be made to Osceola Nursing and Rehab Center.
Mary Anna Wickett Spencer
Mary Anna Wicket Spencer of Hot Springs, Ark., the daughter of Walter and Margaret Wickett, was born June 29, 1919, at New Virginia and died March 9, 2002, in a Hot Springs hospital. She was 82.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Dick Wickett and two sisters, Lucy Felton and Nadine Dick.
Mrs. Spencer is survived by her husband of 64 years, Herbert Spencer of Hot Springs; two sons, Steve Spencer and his wife, Royanna Spencer, of Osceola and Melvin Spencer and his wife, Doris Spen-cer of Jackson, Mo.; a daughter, Linda Corley and her husband, Robert Corley, of Hot Springs; eight grandchildren, including Loren and Mary Linn Spencer Olson of Osceola and Monty Spencer of Des Moines; eight great-grandchildren, including Meredyth Linna Olson of Osceola; other relatives and friends.
The body will be cremated. No funeral services are planned.
Linda Morlock Williamson
Linda Anne Morlock Williamson of Savannah, Ga. was born Jan. 10, 1945, in Logansport, Ind. and died of pneumonia and heart failure Feb. 8, 2002. She was 57.
She was the granddaughter of well-known Decatur County residents, Clyde and Beulah Glazebrook. She spent her school years in Indianola and Big Sandy, Mont. In her many travels, she met her husband, Chuck Williamson in Savannah.
Preceding her in death were her father, William C. Morlock in 2002, and her husband, Chuck Williamson in 1989.
Mrs. Williamson is survived by her mother, Wilma Morlock of Clarkdale, Ariz.; a sister, Merri E. Warner of Clarkdale; a brother, William C. Morlock Jr. of Merced, Calif; a special aunt, Norma Banks of Weldon; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Services were in Georgia by the Murchison Funeral Home. The body was cremated.
Larry Lee Defenbaugh
Larry Defenbaugh, son of Earl “Bob” Defenbaugh and Wilma Lucille Rhodes Defenbaugh, was born August 5, 1939, in Mount Ayr and died March 18, 2003, at his home in rural Osceola. He was 63.
He graduated from Van Wert High School in 1957 and married Karen Jean Gilbert on Dec. 22, 1957 in Des Moines. The couple lived in Des Moines and Indianola prior to moving to a farm near Osceola two years ago. Mr. Defenbaugh worked as a salesman for 3E for ten years before working for Bridgestone Firestone as a tire builder for 17 years. He retired in 1985. He was a member of the United Steel Workers of America Local 310 AFL-CIO/CLC.
Mr. Defenbaugh liked spending time with his family and traveling. He also enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and planting trees around their home, carpentry and remodeling. He liked sprint car races and traveled to races in different parts of the country.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; daughter, Linda Hopkins and her husband, Michael Hopkins of Osceola; son, Jeff Defenbaugh and his wife, Jolee Defenbaugh, of New Virginia; his mother, Wilma Defenbaugh of Osceola; a sister, Sharon Wannarka and her husband, Bob Wannarka, of West Des Moines; six grandchildren, Brandy Mongar of Osceola, Angela Hoffman of Van Wert, Josie, Jake, Joshua and Jessica Defenbaugh, all of New Virginia; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Kaylee, Destiny and William Mongar of Osceola, Isabella Hoffman of Van Wert, many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held March 21, 2003, at Kale Funeral Home, Pastor H. Robert Hopkins of West Des Moines, officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Howard Sinclair, James Lynch, Dale Garton, Randall Updike, Norman Dobson, Tom Curphey. Honorary casket bearers were grandchildren, Brandy Mongar, Josie Defenbaugh, Joshua Defenbaugh, Angela Hoffman, Jake Defenbaugh and Jessica Defenbaugh.
Wilma Defenbaugh
Wilma L. Defenbaugh of Osceola, the daughter of Helen Edna Brown and William C. Rhodes, was born Aug. 26, 1916, in Decatur County and died Oct. 24, 2003, at the Kavanagh House in West Des Moines. She was 87.
She attended schools in Decatur County and graduated from Kellerton High School. She received her teaching certificate and taught school in Decatur and Ringgold Counties.
She married Earl William Defenbaugh on Feb. 1, 1936. The couple had two children, Sharon and Larry.
Mrs. Defenbaugh was an active member of the Osceola United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Osceola Women’s Club, Clarke County Hospital Auxiliary, Sarah Rebekah Lodge Number 57 and the United Methodist Church Women. She will be remembered for her loving ways, serving countless funeral dinners, her affection for cooking and baking and her love for her family.
Mrs. Defenbaugh was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl, in May, 1993; son, Larry in March, 2003; five brothers, Cecil, Ted, Fred, Brown and Russell and one sister, Belle Boswell.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Wannarka and her husband, Bob Wannarka, West Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Karen Defenbaugh of Osceola; four grandchildren, Linda Hopkins of Osceola, Michael Dobson of West Des Moines, Jeff Defenbaugh of New Virginia and Steve Dobson of Austin, Texas; eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 27, at the Osceola United Methodist Church. The Rev. Hugh Stone and the Rev. L. Duane Churchman officiated. Fred Diehl gave the eulogy. Organist Pennie Gonseth accompanied Martha White who sang Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Michael Dobson, Steve Dobson, Fred Diehl, Jeff Defenbaugh, Mike Hopkins and Chuck Edwards. Kale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ellouise Forster
Ellouise Gertrude Forster, the daughter of Anga Still and Clyde Waller, was born Jan. 23, 1910, at Leon and died Oct. 10, 2003, at Princeton, Minn. She was 93.
She married William Forster on July 31, 1932, at Humeston. They owned and operated a general store in Alta Vista for many years before retiring to Princeton in 1969.
Before her marriage Mrs. Forster taught school. After moving to Princeton she was a volunteer for various community organizations. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving on boards and committees, as well as teaching Bible studies. She was an avid gardener and raised flowers outside and in her house.
Mrs. Forster was preceded in death by her husband, William, who died in 1984; two brothers, Ancil Waller and Doyle Waller; and one sister, Mildred Vik.
She is survived by her son, William J. Forster and his wife, Bette Forster, of Fridely, Minn.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Thompson of Gibbon, Minn. and Stephanie Grendahl of Hugo, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Chris Rollinson and Matt Rollinson, both of Gibbon, Minn.; two sisters, Veta Wildenstein of Dallas, Texas and Betty Wallace of Weldon, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Oct. 22 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Princeton with burial in the church cemetery.
Jose "Joe" Welcher
Jose “Joe” E. Welcher, eldest son of John and Mae Leeps Welcher, was born March 17, 1924, in Murray and died of cancer Oct. 22, 2003, at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola. He was 79.
Mr. Welcher lived all of his life in Osceola and attended school in rural Clarke County and Osceola. He served his country during World War II in the European Theater from April 1943 to January 1946. After he was discharged from the U.S. Army he worked at Langfitt Elevators and Farmers Co-op until he retired in 1979. He married Lucille Ellis on May 20, 1950, at the Methodist parsonage in Osceola.
Mr. Welcher enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was young and later became an accomplished horseshoe pitcher and pitched in state fair competition. He was a die-hard Cubs fan and thoroughly enjoyed watching them during the playoffs. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always carried candy for them to find in his pocket.The highlight of his later years was attending his grandchildren’s softball and basketball games.
Mr. Welcher was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Joey Ellis.
He is survived by his wife of Osceola; three stepchildren, Joy O’Dell and her husband, Lynn, O’Dell, of Folsom, Calif., Joan Stuart and her husband Paul Stuart, of New Virginia and Richard Ellis and his wife, Patricia Ellis of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Kenneth Welcher and his wife, Doris Welcher, of Osceola and Wayne Welcher and his wife, Phyllis Welcher, of Des Moines; a sister, Delores McCauly of Osceola; nine grandchildren: 18 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Welcher were Oct. 25 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. Phil Coe of Osceola officiating. Organist was Anne Johnson and vocalist was Rod Harger. Musical selection was One Day At a Time. Special music by his granddaughter, Brandi Spreeman, was Amazing Grace.
Casket bearers were Robert Mann, Doug Stearns, Chad Spreeman, Denny Henry, Joe Ahrens, John Sullivan and John Welcher.
Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery at Osceola.

Katherine West
Katherine Darlene West, the daughter of Shirley Jean Feazell and Robert “Bob” Gray West, was born April 13, 1960 in Des Moines and died Oct. 18, 2003, at her home in Creston. She was 43.
As a small child, she lived with her family in Altoona. They moved to rural Van Wert where she attended Central Decatur Community High School in Leon. She played basketball, sang in chorus and enjoyed art. She graduated in 1978.
Two sons were born to Kathy -- Tanner Robert West and Cort Cole West. Kathy lived in Leon, Peru, Indianola and Creston. She graduated from Simpson College with a degree in psychology in 1993. She worked in social services as a counselor at the Juvenile Hall in Indianola and for Children and Families of Iowa in Creston until 1999.
Kathy endured a long illness and had multiple back surgeries. When she was well, she was smiling, witty and full of energy. She liked to try new things, enjoyed antique auctions and fishing. She took her boys along when they were growing up.
She was preceded in death by her mother. Survivors include her sons, Tanner West of Des Moines, and Cort West of Creston; her father, Bob West, of Weldon; sister, Kim Arenz and her husband, Jim Arenz, of Spanish Fork, Utah; a niece Garnett Sky Arenz and a nephew, Michael Grimes of Utah, other relatives and a host of friends.
Following cremation, memorial services were held Monday, Oct. 27, at Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Len with Pastor Larry Owens officiating. Burial was in the Van Wert Cemetery. Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon was in charge of arrangements.
Jack Wilson
Jack E. Wilson, son of Helen L. Cronin Wilson and Lloyd O. Wilson was born May 14, 1931, at New Virginia. He died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. He was 72.
He graduated from Osceola High School in 1948 and received a bachelor of arts degree from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and a masters degree from Northeast Missouri State. He served four years in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He was a high school math teacher for 40 years, two years at Hanlontown, four at Greenfield and 34 years at New London. He also coached basketball, baseball and football.
He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant. He was member of Lions, a volunteer at Great River Medical Center and Old Threshers and was a member of the Deerfield Golf Club. He was a member of the Iowa High School Basketball Coaches Association and was a director and treasurer of the Geode Education Association. He was a Cardinal and Hawkeye fan and was a host to baseball trips to major league stadiums.
He married Joyce Backes on Nov. 21, 1953 in Peoria, Ill. She died Sept. 9, 1974.
He married Mary Lou Nesius Flam July 14, 1979 in Burlington. She is a survivor along with his sons, David Wilson of Lincoln, Neb., Michael Wilson of Coral Springs, Fla., Scot Flam and Robert Flam of Mt. Pleasant; daughters, Diane Wilson of Albuquerque, N. M., and Janet O’Brien of Jupiter, Fla.; seven grandchildren; sisters, JoAnn Wilson of Osceola and Linda Denton of Creston.
Funeral services were held at the Charles Lorber gymnasium at the high school in New London on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Pastor Matt Miller and the Rev. Nick Adam officiated. Military rites were presented by New London Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7641. Interment of cremains will be at a later date. Memorials made be made to the Jack Wilson Scholarship Fund or the Great River Hospice. Elliott Chapel in New London was in charge of arrangements.
Arlan Kenneth Downing
Arlan Kenneth Downing, son of Walter Downing and Clara Vaughn Downing, was born June 5, 1912, near Bloomfield and died March 22, 2003, at the Clarke County Hospital Extended Care Unit. He was 90.
He began his education near Bloomfield and later attended school in Alden, since he was being raised by George Mensing of Alden. He married Elva Phillips on June 2, 1949, and they became the parents of six children.
After he and Mrs. Downing were married they lived in Hampton for a time and later moved to their family farm in Clarke County in 1950.
Mr. Downing loved the farm and tinkering in the machine shed. He enjoyed gardening and raising pumpkins for his grandkids.
In addition to his parents, relatives preceding him in death were a son Dennis Dudley Downing in 1975; a brother, Orval Downing and three sisters, Bertha Sylvester, Mary Wietzell and Mamie Milroy.
Mr. Downing is survived by his wife of Osceola; four sons, Doug Downing and his wife, Pam Downing, of Des Moines, Darwin Downing and Dick Downing and his wife, Deb Downing, of Osceola, David Downing and his wife, Cinda Downing, of Woodburn; a daughter, Beth Rahn and her husband, Brent Rahn, of Columbia, Mo.; special family friend, Ann March of Osceola; 12 grandchildren, Ryan, Daniel and Katie Downing of Grimes, Ted and Stacey James of Des Moines, Eric Rahn of Columbia, Mo., Dennis and Ben Downing of New Virginia, David Van Dyke of Virginia Beach, Va., Tom Van Dyke of College Springs, Richard Van Dyke of Osceola, and Nicole Downing of Woodburn; five great-grandchildren, Isabella and Victoria Van Dyke of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Ellie Burdock of Woodburn; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Downing were March 26 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. Neville Clayton officiating. Organist Connie Hook accompanied Bud Hook as he sang The Old Rugged Cross and Amazing Grace.
Casket bearers were Doug Downing, Darwin Downing, Dick Downing, David Downing, Rick Oshel and Brent Rahn. Interment was in Green Bay Cemetery in Clarke County.
Thelma Roe Hacker
Thelma Roe Hacker, daughter of Oldie and Effie Owens Roe was born Jan. 15, 1912, in Decatur County and died March 19, 2003, at a care facility in Buffalo, Mo. She was 91.
She spent her youth in Decatur County and attended school in Le Roy. She married John Pitman Hacker on March 19, 1932, and they became the parents of two daughters, Kay Marie and Karen Mae.
Mrs. Hacker lived in Clarke and Decatur counties until May 2002 when she moved to Colonial Springs Care and Rehab Center in Buffalo. She made many friends while she was at the center.
Mrs. Hacker attended Symrna Friends Church near Weldon. She made and decorated wedding cakes professionally. She was very creative. Mrs. Hacker loved gardening and attending various clubs where she was a member. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her delight.
She was preceded in death by her parents; several infant siblings; grandson, Joseph McCullough; three brothers, Tom, James and Robert Roe; three sisters-in-law Audrey, Marie and Leone Roe; and her husband.
Mrs. Roe is survived by her two daughters, Kay Gegner and her husband, Larry Gegner, of Buffalo, Mo. and Karen Mc Cullough and Louis McCullough of Osceola; eight grandchildren, Lori Sand of Kansas City, Mo., Michelle Lehr of Buffalo, Mo., Brian Gegner of Norwalk, Lisa Gegner of Victor, N.Y., John McCullough of Castle Rock, Colo., Mike McCullough of O’Fallon, Mo., Kelly Blanchard of Osceola and Rachel McCullough of San Diego, Calif. and 12 great-grandchildren.
The body was cremated. A memorial service for Mrs. Hacker will be held at 1 p.m. on April 5 at the First Baptist Church (by the Clarke County Hospital) in Osceola.
Rex H. Johnson
Rex H. Johnson, the son of Carl and Blanche Hoover Johnson, was born Nov. 30, 1933, in Murray and died at his home March 18, 2003, in Dunlap. He was 69.
He grew up in the Murray area and graduated from Murray High School.
Mr. Johnson worked as an assistant horse trainer in Omaha and Chicago. He was associated with the National Farm Organization and worked for several car dealers.
He moved to Dunlap in the early 1990s.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant sister, Dorothy Sue and three brothers, Robert, Richard and Max Johnson.
Mr. Johnson is survived by two sisters, Marilynn Goode of Des Moines and Carol Gilbaugh of Graettinger; three sisters-in-law, Naomi Johnson of New Virginia, Leta Johnson of Creston and Geraldine Johnson of Hutchinson, Kan.; special friends, Donna and Mark Brasel of Dunlap and other relatives and friends.
His family will hold a memorial service at a later date.

Vera Neal McBroom
Vera Neal McBroom of Osceola, the daughter of Chester and Alice Neal Hockensmith, was born Sept. 6, 1911, at Ollie and died March 20, 2003, at the Osceola Nursing and Rehab Center in Osceola. She was 91.
She lived most of her childhood around the LeRoy area, except for few years in Minnesota.
She married James Keith McBroom on Oct. 11, 1929, and they became the parents of four children, Clovis “Toby”, Richard “Buck”, Rosa and Kathryn.
Mrs. McBroom worked hard all of her life. She raised the children, did farm work and even did carpentry work. She worked at an Osceola Casey’s General Store when she was 72. She was able to relax in her later years. In 1998 she suffered a stroke that took her eyesight, short-term memory and ability to walk.
Mrs. McBroom was a wonderful woman, wife, mother and grandmother. She was easy going, gentle, kind, and devoted to her family. She had a sense of humor. She enjoyed reading, music, crosswords, crocheting, playing cards watching basketball and traveling. Her suitcase was always packed and ready. She missed seeing only the states of Maryland, Delaware and Hawaii.
She was baptized at the Last Chance Church and had a strong faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1989; son Toby in 1987; five brothers, Paul, Chester, Lowell, Bruce and Duane Hockensmith; and two sisters, Kay Potts and Lois Houck.
Mrs. McBroom is survived by three children, Richard “Buck” Mc Broom and his wife, Pat McBroom, of Garden Grove; Rose Niday of Plattsburg, Mo. and Kathryn Grimm and her husband, Roger Grimm, of Osceola; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister Twyla Disner and her husband, J.P. Disner, of Brighton, Colo.; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Nelson of Aurora, Colo. and Lela McBroom of Summerdale, Ala.; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. McBroom were March 22, at Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon the Rev. Terry D. Robert officiating.
Casket bearers were her grandsons, Bradley Grimm, James McBroom, Kyle McBroom, Scott McBroom, Jim Niday Jr., Jon Niday, Kerry Niday, William Niday and Clay Paulsen. Interment was in the Metier Cemetery, east of Weldon.
