William Sherman Vaughn, age 102 of Howland, Ohio, passed away August 12, 1998.
He was born Willis, VA. Oct. 7, 1895 to James M)adison?) and Nancy J(ackson) Vaughn.
He is survived by son Ray Vaughn of Howland, Ohio, five grandchildren and 7 gr-grandchildren.
Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Youngstown, Ohio.

VEST, Edgar Lee, 67, of Temple, Texas, died Saturday, September 12, 1998 in
Phoenix, Ariz. Mr. Vest was born in Beckley, W.Va. and was a brick mason by
trade. He also served in the Navy. Survivors include two daughters, Debbie
Vest and Judy Anderson; two sons, Gary and Holt Vest; two sisters, Esther
Brown and Ruth Thurman; a brother, Bernard Vest; numerous nieces and
nephews; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:30
p.m. Sunday, September 20, 1998 at the Radford Christian Church, Radford,
Va.
VEST, Douglas Vernon, 73, of Roanoke, passed away Monday afternoon,
September 14, 1998, in a local hospital. He was retired from Trent Plumbing
and Heating and was an avid hunter, belonging to Mountain Valley Beagle
Club. He was preceded in death by his mother, Doxie Vest Poff. Survivors
include one sister, Claudine Vest Pillow; two nieces and their spouses,
Rita and John Smith, Trudy and Tony Young; one great-niece, Michelle S.
Rowland; three great-nephews, Brian M. Young, Connecticut, Chad S. Young,
Roanoke, Stuart (Todd) Smith, Roanoke; one great-great-niece, Jessica
Rowland and many special friends. Graveside services will be held Thursday,
September 17, 10 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Jeff Gardner
officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel.
KNOWLES, Frances A., 73, of Christiansburg died Wednesday morning,
September 16, 1998, in a Blacksburg health care center. She was retired
from Radford Army Ammunition Plant, where she served many years as a
registered nurse. Surviving are one son, William M. Knowles, two daughters
and sons-in-law, Patricia and Richard H. Horne, Christiansburg, their
children, Heather L. Horne, Winter Park, Fla. and Brian R. H. Horne,
Christiansburg, Katinka and Dale Hawley, Christiansburg, and their
children, Jeff and John Hawley, both of Christiansburg; one sister, Mildred
Thompson Check, three brothers and sisters-in-law, John F. and Louise
Angle, Warner Robins, Ga., Sam and Gwinn Angle, Radford, Lewis and
Christine Angle of Check. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday from the
Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by The Rev. Doug Kanney.
Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. The family requests in lieu of
flowers that memorials be made to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, Box 3754,
Radford, Va. 24153, the St. Paul United Methodist Church, 220 W. Main St.,
Christiansburg, Va. 24073, or the church or charity of one's choice.

WICKLINE, Ernest Ray, 83, of New Town Road, Shawsville, died Tuesday,
September 22, 1998 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was preceded in
death by his wife, "Sis"; one son, Buddy; two great-grandchildren, Chelsea
Raines and Jason Wickline; one brother, Avis Wickline; one sister, Letha
Terry; and two brothers-in-law, Pete Boothe and Charles Boothe. He is
survived by two daughters and two sons and their spouses, Mildred W. Raines
and husband Junior of Elliston, Mary Welcher and husband Jeff of Ironto,
Robert ("Bob") Wickline and wife Hazel of Christiansburg, Danny R. Wickline
and wife Debbie of Shawsville; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Wickline of
Wirtz; 15 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren;
seven great-great-grandchildren; one special friend, Geneva Allen of Union,
W.Va.; two sisters, Sylvia Dalton of Christiansburg, and Maude Smith of
Shawsville. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, September 25, 1998 at the
Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Willie Yates
and the Rev. Gary Sheppard. Burial will follow in the Peterstown Cemetery.

O'CONNOR, Ada Epperly, 90, formerly of Pilot (Huffville), died Tuesday,
September 22, 1998 in a Salem nursing home. Surviving are two sisters,
Madia Austin, Pilot, Lucille Shelor, Roanoke; four brothers, Edgar Epperly
of New Jersey, Harley Epperly and Herbert Epperly, both of Floyd and
Willard Epperly, Roanoke; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services
will be Friday at 2 pm. at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd, with the Rev. Lane
Spigener officiating. Interment in Huffville Cemetery. The family will

POFF, Dennis Michael Jr., ("Denny"), 29, formerly of Salem, died on
Wednesday, September 23, 1998, in Asheville, N.C., as a result of a traffic
accident. He was a machinist with P.E. Valve Company in Asheville. He was
preceded in death by his grandfathers, J. Lynwood Poff and Dwight D.
Coleman. He is survived by a close friend and former wife, Tracy Poff; his
beloved children, Chadwick Michael Poff, Rachael Renee Poff both of
Atlanta, Ga.; his parents, Dennis Michael and Arlene C. Poff of Asheville;
two very devoted grandmothers, Thelma Lee Poff and Grace Coleman; his
special aunts and uncles include, David L. and Lisa Poff Oliver of Salem,
Phillip Lynwood and Jane Poff of Roanoke, Mark and Shelby Brooks of Salem,
John and Zelda Shaffer of Baltimore, Md.; cousins, Clayton, Wesley and
Hannah Oliver, William Brooks and Sara Shaffer. Funeral services will be
held on Saturday, September 26, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the John M. Oakey and
Son Chapel in Salem. The Elder Junior Conner will officiate. Burial will

ALLS, John Wayne, 49, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, September 24, 1998.
He was a retired machinist from Norfolk Southern's East End Shops. He was
predeceased by his mother, Christine Ellifritz Alls. Surviving are his
father, John Everett Alls, Roanoke; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret
and Mickey Scott, Goodview, Brenda and Edward Powers, Salem; brother and
sister-in-law, Floyd "Butch" and Bonnie Alls, Roanoke; nieces and nephews,
Steven Whorley, Salem, E. Lincoln Powers Jr., Richmond, Latisha, Michelle,
and Courtney Scott, all of Goodview. Funeral services will be conducted
from First Wesleyan Church, 11 a.m. Monday, September 28, with the Rev.
Charles King officiating. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. The
family will receive friends Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.
