JENNINGS, Louise Kesler, 62, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, October 2,
1998 at her home. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Jennings
Delp. Surviving are her husband, Malcolm E. Jennings; daughters and
sons-in-law, Joyce Faye and Allen Mitchem, Roanoke, Vickie and Lynn
Wilkerson, Botetourt County, Sue and Doug Huffman, Roanoke; son and
daughter-in-law, Barry Wayne and Barbara Jennings, Roanoke; 12
grandchildren; sisters, June Howell, Roanoke, Ruby Dempsey, Red Oak;
brothers, Cleve Kesler, Richmond, Clarence Kesler, Roanoke. Funeral
services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, October 5, 1998, at
Simpson-Tharp Funeral Chapel, 5160 Peters Creek Road, by Evangelist Tommy
L. Blewett. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The
family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. and 6

PHILLIPS, Della Smith, 77, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, October 1,
1998 in a Salem hospital. She was a long time member of Preston Oaks
Baptist Church, where she was involved in the Travelers Singers and the
Dorcus Class. Mrs. Phillips was retired from Smartwear-Irving Saks.
Surviving are her husband, Ray H. Phillips; her children, Delores R.
Phillips of Charleston, W. Va., Rodney A. Phillips of Roanoke, David N.
Phillips and his wife, Ginger Phillips of Goodview; four grandchildren,
Jennifer Phillips Dean and her husband, Lewis Dean, Catherine B. Phillips,
Shawn A. Phillips and Jason R. Phillips; a great-granddaughter, Natalie
Dean; several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Preston Oaks
Baptist Church, 102 Preston Avenue, N. E., Roanoke, Va. 24012. Funeral
services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, October 3, 1998 from Oakey's
North Chapel. Pastor Joe Greene will officiate. Interment will be in Blue

HOWARD, Fannie Martin, 86, of Blacksburg, went to be with the Lord on
Thursday, October 1, 1998 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born in
Floyd County on April 17, 1912 to the late James Wilton and Maude Bryant
Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Howard;
and a son, Melvin Edgar Howard. She was a long-time member of the Allegeny
Baptist Church. She is survived by seven daughters and sons-in-law, June
Bandy of Chesapeake, Mildred and Clarence Adkins of Salem, Frances Eskridge
of Columbia, S.C., Nancy and Dan Winters of Christiansburg, Evelyn S.
Morris of Danville, Mary and Victor Adkins of Christiansburg, Hazel Lee and
David Johnson of Christiansburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin E.
and Beanie Howard of Christiansburg, and Frank A. and Peggy Howard of
Check; 29 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 11
great-great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Ocie and Lyde
McMinnis of Great Falls, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral
services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, October 4, 1998 in the McCoy
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Dale Snider officiating. Interment
will follow in the Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. Friends may call at the

COMER, Ethel Lee, 87, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, October 3, 1998 in
a local hospital. She was the widow of Herbert K. Comer. She was a retired
Roanoke City School teacher and a member of the Westend United Methodist
Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Thomas
Epperly, Jr., Roanoke; two grandchildren, Linda Epperly, Fairlee, W.Va.,
Thomas Epperly, III and wife Bobbi of Roanoke; three great-granddaughters,
Lindsey Epperly, Meghan Epperly and Abigail Epperly, all of Roanoke;
sister, Mary Morgan, Hinton, W.Va.; very dear friend, Eleanor DeCosta,
Roanoke. Funeral services will be at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlor, 1
p.m. Monday, October 5, 1998, in Hinton, W. Va. Interment will be in
Restwood Burial Park, Hinton, W.Va. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Monday at the funeral home.
SAUNDERS, Henry Elmo, ("Buddy"), 72, of Bent Mountain, died Saturday,
October 3, 1998 at the V. A. Medical Center after a short illness. He was
preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lawrence Saunders and his parents,
Samuel and Vivian Saunders. He is survived by a daughter, Donna Lynn Vest;
a grandson, Zachary Lee Vest, all of Bent Mountain. Also surviving are two
sisters, Eva J. Heath and H. Louise Sanders and their families, all of
Roanoke. He was a veteran of World War II and a life-long member of Mt.
Pleasant United Methodist Church. The family will receive guests and
Oakey's Downtown on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. Funeral
services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, October 5, 1998 at Oakey's Roanoke
Chapel. The Rev. Anthony Busic will officiate. Interment will follow in
Wilson's Cemetery, Floyd County. Special thanks to a family friend, Faye

SPANGLER, James Arnold, 67, of Shawsville, died Thursday October 1, 1998.
Mr. Spangler was the son of the late George Daniel and Agnes Spangler.
Arnold is survived by one daughter, Donna K. Bates; two grandchildren,
Kimberly and Jason Bates; one great-grandson, Austin Wayne Milam; three
brothers, George Daniel Spangler Jr., Ray Spangler, and Robert Spangler,
all of Shawsville; four sisters, Ruby Bell, Edith Yates, both of
Shawsville, Marie Shark of Christiansburg, and Shirley Barlow of Bassett;
and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held 2 p.m.
Sunday, October 4, 1998 at Den Hill Cemetery, with Pastor Virgil McHone

GRAHAM, Mary C., 73, of Christiansburg, passed away Saturday, October 3,
1998 in Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was a member of St. Paul United
Methodist Church and the Christiansburg Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, William C. Graham; daughters and
son-in-law, Cynthia Graham, Blacksburg, Carol G. and William J. Mangold,
Jr., M.D., Tucson, Ariz.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold G. and Betty
Linkous, Christiansburg, Lloyd A. and Doris Linkous, Wytheville. Funeral
services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, 1998 at St. Paul United
Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Doug Kanney. Interment will follow
in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be
made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 554, Roanoke, Va.

EPPERLY, Mae Witt, 83, of Elliston, wife of the late Dennis E. Epperly, a
wonderful Mom and grandmother and special friend to all, went home to be with
the Lord on Saturday, October 3, 1998. She is survived by five sons, Ervin
Junior Epperly, Linwood (Bussy) D. and daughter-in-law, Doris Epperly, J. C.
and daughter-in-law Trudy Epperly, all of Elliston, Michael (Mickey) L. and
daughter-in-law Pam Epperly, Salem, Luin J. and daughter-in-law Betty Epperly
of Elliston; four daughters, Mary Sheppard, Elliston, Alma Dehart, Josephine
(Jody) and son-in-law Robert (Bobby) E. LaPrad, all of Salem, Glenna Croy,
Elliston. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Nelson Starkey of Elliston;
17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the
Church of God in Elliston, Va. on Tuesday, October 6, 1998 at 2 p.m, conducted
by the Rev. Jimmy Jennings of Temple Baptist Church in Salem, the Rev. Ronald
King of the Church of God in Elliston and the Rev. Roger Counts of Calvary
Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the family cemetery. The body will be
taken to the Elliston Church of God Monday, where the family will receive
friends from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday evening. Arrangements are being handled by
Richardson-Horne Funeral Home.
