Mrs. Alija [sic] Hylton
Jonesborough Herald-Tribune
IN MEMORIAM
On the evening of June 23, 1907 the spirit of Mrs. Alija [sic] Hylton took its flight from its body of clay, to soar to worlds unknown. Mrs. Hylton was born Jan. 1, 1820, in Halifax Co., Va., making her age 87 yrs. 5 mo. and 23 days.
Her maiden name was Martha Jane Gill. In 1844 she married Elija Hylton. She professed faith in Christ and was a member of the New Hoden Baptist Church for 16 years. In '57 Mr. and Mrs. Hylton moved to Tenn. where she has lived her years. She moved her membership to New Salem Church, where she was a member for 49 years. Mrs. Hylton, at all times, kept faith in Christ never doubting his tender mercies. About two years ago her husband died. In her old age she bore her sorrow bravely. She was a help and comforter to many, both old and young.
During the last few years of her life, she remained in her room, yet never alone, relatives, friends and neighbors remembered her and called often to see her, she was never forgotten. She was ready and willing to die, "When He calls me I am ready," she said a few weeks before her death. She fell asleep very quietly. Her remains were placed in New Salem cemetery by her husband. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. John Chase. A large gathering of friends and relatives assembled to pay her a last tribute. Her grave was more than covered with flowers.
She leaves six living children to mourn her departure.
They are sorrowful for they will miss her, we all will miss her, but
"God would not deem it worth His while to send
Such crushing sorrows as pursue us here,
Unless beyond this fleeting journey's end
Our chastened spirits found another sphere."
-----------------------
She can no more come to us, but by God's promise, we shall go to her and shall
know her in that land where Christ says "I go to prepare a place for you."
Mrs. Hylton lived her threescore years and ten. She acknowledged Christ as her
Saviour and lived a helpful Christian life. She did her part, and is at rest,
watching and waiting for us.
-----------------------
'Tis strange sometimes that those we lean on most; those in whose laps our
limbs are nursed, Fall into shadow, soonest lost, those we love first are taken
first."
-----------------------
God gives us love something to love he lends us,
But when love is grown to ripeness that on which it throve
Falls off and love is left alone.
-----------------------
Sleep sweetly tender heart in peace.
Sleep, holy spirit blessed soul,
While the stars burn the moons increase and the great ages onward roll.
Sleep till the end, true soul and sweet.
Nothing comes to thee new or strange.
Sleep full of rest from head to feet.
Lie still, dry dust, secure of change. - E.B.B.
