ELDON WRIGHT, Jr., 71, of Speedwell, died Monday, July 26 at LaFollette
Medical Center. He retired from Armco Steel and moved to Tennessee in 1990.
He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was previously a member and
deacon of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Carlisle, Ohio. He was a US Army
veteran of WWII.
He was preceded in death by parents, Noah Eldon and Mary Adaline Smith
Wright. Survivors include wife, Anna Lee Wright; son, Larry Eldon of
Carlisle, Ohio; daughter, Kathy Diane Blair of Farmersville, Ohio; brothers,
William B. Wright of Middletown, Ohio, Hargis E. Wright of Kansas, George D.
Wright of Hotsprings, Arkansas, and Douglas W. Wright of Carlisle, Ohio;
sisters, Pauline "Bobbie Burwick of Chautauqua, Ohio, Clara "Colleen" Hurt,
Linda Sue Blair, and Jo Carol Carpenter, all of Carlisle, Ohio, and Mary Ann
Wilson of Franklin, Ohio; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 28 at Emmanuel Baptist Church with
Rev. Richard Donald Proffitt officiating. Interment followed in Butler County
Memorial Park, Trenton, Ohio. Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

MARION F. BROOKS, 82, of Newcomb, died Tuesday, July 20 at Methodist Medical
Center in Oak Ridge.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 23 at Harp Funeral Home with Rev.
David Morgan and Rev. Johnny Hansford officiating. Interment followed in
Valleyview Cemetery.

MILDRED L. CASE, 82, of Jellico, died Wednesday, July 21 at Jellico Community
Hospital. She was retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. She was
preceded in death by parents, Lee and Rosa Lee Terry Clark and husband,
Bernard Case. Funeral services were held Friday, July 23 at Cox & Son Funeral
Home with Rev. Jerome Walden officiating. Interment followed Saturday in
Mountain View Memorial Park, Richmond, West Virginia.

ARLIE WAYNE CHADWELL, 49, of Baltimore, Maryland, formerly of LaFollette,
died Tuesday, July 20 at his home. He was preceded in death by father, John
Chadwell. Survivors include wife, Gail Chadwell, mother, Elizabeth Chadwell
of Knoxville. Memorial services were held Friday, July 23 in Baltimore,
Maryland.

JAMES ARTHUR "Bud" CHADWELL, 80, of LaFollette, died Tuesday, July 20 at UT
Medical Center. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 623, Scottish Rite
Temple, and Kerbela Shrine Temple. He was retired from the United States
Special Forces of the Army. He was preceded in death by parents, Eslick and
Sallie Chadwell. Funeral services were held Friday, July 23 at Cedar Hill
Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Arnold officiating. Interment followed
Saturday in Bakers Forge Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cedar Hill Baptist
Church Building Fund. Roach Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

HERMON BILLY "Bill" CHAPMAN, 66, of Clinton, died Sunday, July 25 at
Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. He was self-employed as a mechanic. He
was preceded in death by parents, John and Susan Golden Chapman. Survivors
include wife, Betty Hatmaker Chapman of Clinton. Funeral services were held
Tuesday, July 27 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City with Rev. Oral
Prater officiating. Interment followed Wednesday in Pleasant View Cemetery in
Clinton.

THOMAS MONROE "Jack" CLEPPER, 75, of Newcomb, died Sunday, July 18 at his
home.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 21 at Harp Funeral Home with Rev.
Denny Wayne Davis officiating. Interment followed in Hicks Cemetery.

DOROTHY L. DEWITT, 80, of LaFollette, formerly of LaFayette, Indiana, died
Saturday, July 24.
She was preceded in death by husband, Lester DeWitt. Funeral services were
held at Hippensteel Funeral Home in LaFayette, Indiana.

MARY IVAREE EADS, 76, of Williamsburg, Kentucky, died Saturday, July 24 at
Williamsburg Nursing Home.
She is survived by husband, Ora W. Eads, Sr. of LaFollette. Funeral services
were held Monday, July 26 at Croley Funeral Home in Williamsburg with Rev.
Ward Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Moses Addition at Pleasant
View Cemetery.

CHARLES WILLINGTON MARS, 84, of Norris, formerly of Oak Ridge and Fincastle,
died Thursday, July 22 at Fort Sanders Hospital. He was a graduate of Lincoln
Memorial University and a Lt. Col. in the United States Air Force serving in
WWII and was a POW. He was preceded in death by parents, Jacob T. and Bessie
Miller Mars. Survivors include wife, Ruby Parker Mars. Funeral services were
held Monday, July 26 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City with Tony
McAfee officiating. Interment followed in Fincastle Cemetery.

ALICE GERTRUDE MICH, 73, of LaFollette, died Friday, July 23 at LaFollette
Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Isaac Snead and Edward John Mich;
parents, John Virgil and Roma Hill Leatherwood. Funeral services were held
Sunday, July 25 at Albertville Memorial Funeral Home, Albertville, Alabama
with Rev. Ed King officiating. Interment followed in Piney Grove Cemetery,
Altoona, Alabama.

JUANITA C. MORGAN, 61, of Newcomb, died Monday, July 19 at Jellico Community
Hospital.
She is survived by husband, James Morgan of Newcomb. Graveside services were
held Tuesday, July 20 at Douglas Cemetery with Rev. David Morgan officiating.
Harp Funeral Home of Jellico in charge of arrangements.

ODEIVA SHARP, 73, of Grantsboro, died Saturday, July 24 at LaFollette Medical
Center. He was a member of Grantsboro Baptist Church. He was preceded in
death by parents, Francis and Lusettia Sharp. Funeral services were held
Tuesday, July 27 at Grantsboro Baptist Church with Rev. J.T. Asbury and Rev.
Conley Shephard officiating. Interment followed in Grantsboro Cemetery. Cross
Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

DANIEL LEON WILSON, 45, of Fairborne, Ohio, formerly of LaFollette, died
Wednesday, July 21 at his home.
He was preceded in death by mother, Imogene Walden Wilson. Survivors include
wife, Judy Wilson of Dayton. Ohio; Funeral services were held Sunday, July 25
at Martin Funeral Home with Rev. Wade Walls and Rev. Harry James officiating.
Interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery.

MacPHERSON, CLAUDIA BUSLER - -passed away suddenly Wednesday July 28, 1999.
Claudia was a long time resident of Oak Ridge. Arriving in 1943 to work for
the Manhattan Project, she was crowned the city's first Miss Oak Ridge and
married Bob MacPherson in 1945. She was a vibrant woman, great wife, mother,
and homemaker, troop leader, room mom, fund raiser, shopkeeper, serious
gardener, and good friend. Blessed with a positive attitude, Claudia faced
adversity with a smile and encouragement for those around her. Survived by
husband, Bob MacPherson of Oak Ridge; daughters and sons-in-law, Ronni
MacPherson and Renny Severance of Fort Meyers, FL, Vickie MacPherson and
Eddie Carter of Knoxville. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 212 South Peters Road,
Knoxville, TN 37923. Weatherford Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

MEREDITH, MAGEL (MAE) - age 89, of Jacksboro, departed this life July 29,
1999. She was a member of New Canaan Baptist Church of Terry Creek. Preceded
in death by husband, James Hoyt Meredith and one infant daughter; parents,
Lorenzo and Julie (Freels) Lay; sisters, Pearl Chitwood, Marie Robbins and
Gertie Sharp. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Martha
Meredith of Pioneer and Harry and Jane Meredith of Powell; daughters and
sons-in-law, Joann and Andy Evans of Jacksboro and Sandra Faye and John
Wolfenbarger of Americus, GA; brother, Loren Lay of Pioneer and
sister-in-law, Clautee Posey of Jacksboro; 10 grandchildren; 7
great-grandchildren and special friends, Maxine Rains, Dorothy Ivey and
Lucille Newport of Caryville. The family will receive friends on Saturday,
July 31, 1999 at Cross Funeral Home LaFollette from 6:00-7:30 p.m. followed

ROOP, REV. JOE - age 78 of Clinton, fought a good fight, kept the faith,
finished his course Tuesday, July 27, 1999 and is now gone home to receive
that crown of righteousness that was laid up for him. He was a member of
Riverview Baptist Church, Clinton, TN. Devoted to the Lord he proclaimed
God's word for 49 years serving as pastor of Lakeview Baptist, Clinton, TN,
Unity Baptist, Knoxville, TN, as well as churches in Hillborne Springs, FL,
New River, FL, and LaCross, FL. He was a WWII era veteran. Preceded in death
by his sons, Joseph M. Roop and Rev. Timothy L. Roop, also his father,
mother, 5 brothers, 3 sisters, and 3 grandchildren. Survived by: his wife of
56 years Robbie Sue Simpson Roop; sons, Rev. Robert L. Roop, Ricky D. Roop,
Steven W. Roop, and Joey D. Roop, all of Clinton, TN; daughters, Anita J.
Roop Maxey of Powell, TN and Marietta Sue (Susie) Roop Inman of Knoxville,

TIDWELL, MR. JAMES WILLIAM JR. - age 71, of Jellico (High Cliff Community)
passed away 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 1999 at Oak Ridge Methodist
Medical Center. He was a member of Jellico United Methodist Church, Jellico
Masonic Lodge #527 and Chairman of The Veteran's Memorial Committee, which
built a monument to area veterans killed in war. He served in The U.S. Navy
aboard The U.S.S. Swenson during World War II. He was a retired employee of
The Jellico Post Office and a contributing friend to The Jellico Rescue
Squad. Preceded in death by his parents, James and Mae Tidwell; a baby
sister, Pearl. Survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Wilma Roberts
Tidwell; sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Cheryl Tidwell, Mark and Yvonne
Tidwell; daughter, Susan Jane Norton, all of the Jellico area; grandchildren,
Leslie Tidwell, Matthew Norton, Erica Tidwell, Travis Tidwell, Heather Rose

Carlos, 53, of Ferriday died Friday, July 23, 1999, in Ferriday.
He was a native of Houma and employed as a roustabout. He was a member of
Ferriday Assembly of God.

Arnold of New lberia- one son, Joey Carlos of California; one stepdaughter,
Vivian Bass of Vidalia; one brother, Houston Comeaux of Ferriday; nine

Mrs. Fontenot, 77, of Pine Prairie died Monday, July 26, 1999, in Ville
Platte Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Isom P. Fontenot of Pine Prairie; three sons,
Gerald Fontenot of Dallas, Texas, Earl Fontenot of Pine Prairie and Roger
Fontenot of Lake Charles; one brother, Ettel Ardoin Sr. of Pine Prairie; one

Mrs. Weatherford, 79, of Winnfield died Sunday, July 25,1999, in Parkview
Care Center.
She was a member of United Baptist Church.

Julius Crawford of Winnfield; one stepson, Johnny Weatherford of Franklin;
three stepdaughters, Evelyn Harris of Forest Hill, Linda Broom and Janice
Theriot, both of Franklin; one granddaughter and two great-granddaughters.

Wright, 58, of Rock Springs died Friday, July 23,1999, in Wyoming Medical
Center, Casper.
lie was a native of Olla, La., and attended schools in Louisiana. He was a
1959 graduate of LaSalle High School.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Wright of Rock Springs; one son, Charles
Kevin Wright of Rock Springs; two daughters, Kimberly Wright Agostini and
Karla Wright, both of Rock Springs; one sister, Elaine Ivy of Alexandria,
La.; and four grandchildren.

Garrett B. Anderson
Graveside services for Garrett Bryan Anderson, infant son of Robert and
Monica Anderson of Pineville, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Greenwood Memorial

The infant died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in Rapides Women's and CHdren's
Hospital.

Alexis M. Bradford
BENTLEY -- Services for Alexis Michelle Bradford, infant daughter of Mark and
Mindy Bradford of Pollock, will be at 3:30 p.m. today in Bentley Assembly of
God with the Rev. Tom Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Pollock Cemetery
under direction of Hixson Bros.
Alexis, 9 days old, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in Ochsner Medical Center,
New Orleans.
Survivors, in addition to her parents include her paternal grandparents, Bill
and Jeannie Bradford of Pollock; and maternal grandparents, Michael and Daisy
Edwards, of Pollock.

Dennis L. Ray
OAKDALE - Services for Dennis L. Ray will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel
of Rush with the Rev. Vernon Powell officiating. Burial will be in New Hope
Cemetery, Calcasieu.
Ray, 74, of Glenmora died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in his residence.
He was a lifelong resident of Glenmora where he was a member and deacon of
Gospel Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War 11,
Korean War and Vietnam War. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and was a
World Class Pistol and Rifle Champion. He was a member of VFW Post No. 3799
of Forest Hill and a foster parent of 50 children for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby E. Giles Ray of Glenmora; two sons, James
"Pink" Ray of Glenmora and Charles Patrick Ray of Shelbyville, Tenn.; three
daughters, Ruby Ray of Aiea, Hawaii, Beverly Cloud of Glenmora and Sarah
Causey of Shelbyville, Tenn.; four brothers, R.C. Ray and Johnnie Ray, both
of Glenmora, W.P. Ray of Oakdale and Jerry Ray of Elizabeth; three sisters,
Martha Malone of Glenmora, Annie Kotila of California and Evelyn Berry of
Texas; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Josephine Stewart
Services for Josephine Stewart will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of
Hixson Bros., Pineville. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Ms. Stewart, 77, of Alexandria died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in Christus St.
Frances Cabrini Hospital.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Shelby N. Douzart of Pineville, Larry Gene
Douzart of Alexandria and Billy Wayne Stewart of Boyce; three daughters,
Joyce Ann McIntyre of Pineville, Shirley Ann Poole of Tioga and Patsy Marie
Daniels of Alexandria; 33 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.

CHAMBERS, MARY LAURAH - age 91, of LaFollette, passed away Friday, July 30,
at LaFollette Medical Center. She was a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church,
retired teacher, Cumberland Mt. Chapter 137 OES, Homemakers Club and National
China Painters. Preceded in death by husband, Dr. W.H. Chambers and son, Dr.
Raymond Chambers. Survivors: grandsons and wives, Stephen Mount and Brenda
Chambers, LaFollette, Michael Hardie and Lori Chambers, Mt. Juliet;
great-grandchildren, Stephanie Anne, Hardie, Tyler and Joseph Chambers;
daughter-in-law, JoAnne Chambers, Lebanon. Funeral service 8 p.m. Sunday,
Cross Chapel, Rev. Ronnie Arnold officiating. Interment 10 a.m. Monday,
Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Cross
Funeral Home. Arrangements by Cross Funeral Home.

Fred Leroy Sipes -- 70, Harrisonburg, VA
Fred Leroy Sipes, 70, a resident of Avante at Harrisonburg, VA, formerly of
Elkton, VA, died Sunday morning in Rockingham Memorial Hospital where he
had been a patient since July 12.
He was born in Harrisonville, PA, on August 22, 1928, and was a son of
Hettie Hess Sipes and the late Baltzer Sipes.
He was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. He was a retired
self-employed truck driver.
On June 14, 1959, he married the former Mary Rosalee Dean, who died August
7, 1993.
Besides his mother, he is survived by one son, Robert C. 'Bobby'' Sipes of
Elkton, VA; five daughters: Mary Ann Armentrout of Stanley, VA; Barbara
Swope of Hancock, MD; Susan Blenard of Hagerstown, MD; Diane Sipes of
McConnellsburg; and Marietta Swartz of Burman, PA; two brothers: Leonard
Sipes of Hustontown; and Edgar Sipes of McConnellsburg; two sisters:' Ruby
Dawson of Lima, Ohio, and Dorcas Souders of Hagerstown, MD. Two
grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. in the
Kyger-Pence Funeral Home near McGaheysville, VA, with Rev. Archie Lam
officiating. Burial was made in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in McCaheysville.

Berry, 82, of Waterproof died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in Alexandria.
He was a retired planter and a native of Tensas Parish. He was a member of
the Soil Conservation Board and Chairman for Tensas/Concordia District, Board
of Trustees for Wesley Chapel Methodist Church and a graduate of Texas A&I
University.
Survivors include his wife, Alberta Berry of Waterproof, one daughter,
Katherine Berry Brewton of Winnfield; two sons, Edward Y. Berry Jr. of
Abbeville and Douglas C. Berry of Canton, Miss.- two step-daughters, Alberta
B. Collins of Boyiston, Maine, and Ardele Nicols of Warren, Vt.; one step-
son, Charles Berger of Plano, Texas; one sister, Elizabeth Lynch of
Newellton; three brothers, Oliver Berry of St. Joseph, Burton Berry of Monroe
and Fred Berry of Longview, Texas; his step-mother, Minnie Berry of St.
Joseph; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Truman Goldman, Hank Rabb, Michael Brewton, Mark Brewton,
Cole Berry, James Lentz, Chuck Tucker and Frank Burnside Jr.

Lucille D. Carpenter
FOREST MLL - Services for Lucille Duck Carpenter will be at 2 p.m. Friday in
Forest Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Lofton and Dr. Robert Lee
officiating. Burial will be in Butters Cemetery under direction of Rush,
Pineville.
Mrs. Carpenter, 96, of Pineville died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in Hilltop
Nursing Home, Pineville.
She was a native of Forest Hill, a member of Main Street Baptist Mission and
a Sunday School teacher at Tioga Manor Nursing Home. She was an active member
of WMU and a active leader in Southern Baptist Convention Mission programs.
Survivors include one son, Lucian G. Conway of Pineville- six grandchildren,
17 great-grandchild and four great-great-grandchildren.
A wake service will begin at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Friends may call from 5-1 0 p.m. today in the funeral home and from 9 a.m.
until time of services Friday in the church.

Esther W. deVries
BATON ROUGE - Services for Esther Wenzel deVries will be at 3 p.m. Saturday
in Goodwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Dane Blankenship officiating.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 6, 1999, at Emmanuel Baptist
Church, Alexandria, at a time to be announced.
Mrs. deVries, 82, of Pineville died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, in her
residence.
She was a retired teacher from the East Baton Rouge school system and had
resided in Pineville since 1997. She served for many years on the Board of
Campfire and was very active as a church accompanist.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Arthur D. deVries Sr. of Pineville; two
sons, Bill deVries of Albuquerque, N.M., and Art deVries of Columbia, Mo.;
two daughters, Lorinda deVries of Baton Rouge and Viola Britt of Pineville;
one brother, Orrin J. Wenzel Jr.; one sister, Marguerite Carrier; and several
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dupre of Ville Platte died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, in her residence.
Survivors include one son, Danny Dupre of Point Blue; three daughters, Diane
Vidrine and Gayle Dupre, both of Violet, and Kay Guillory of Ville Platte;
seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Bessie Len Foster

Mrs. Foster, 95, of Alexandria died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in Rapides
Regional Medical Center.

Allen Foster of Washington, D.C.; eight grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
