Josaphat Popovich
The Rev. Josaphat John Popovich, 73, of Prescott Valley died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at a Phoenix hospital.
He was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Jeannette, Pa., to Michael and Mary (Galmulka) Popovich.
Mr. Popovich retired as a priest in the St. Jude's Byzantine Catholic Church in Ernest, Pa., and moved to Prescott Valley six years ago.
Survivors include his sisters, Mary Popovich and Rose Hershberger, both of Prescott and Ann Hrubec of Saddle Brook, N.J.; and a brother, Nicholas Popovich of Prescott.
Services will be in New Jersey.
The family suggests contributuions to St. Jude's Byzantine Cathlolic Church in Ernest, Pa.

Irene Shewmaker
Irene Shewmaker, 74, of Dewey, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Las Fuentes Care Center in Prescott.
She was born June 29, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Michael and Barbara (Sopko) Babyak.
She married Earl Shewmaker on Dec. 9, 1966. The Shewmakers moved to Dewey in 1976 from Yucaipa, Calif.
Mrs. Shewmaker was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. She enjoyed being a homemaker, creating crafts, gardening, canning her produce, and knitting.
She was proudest of her family and her home.
Mrs. Shewmaker is survived by her husband, Earl; sons, Chuck of Mohave Valley, Rick Greenwood of Running Springs, Calif., and Tom Greenwood, also of California; sisters, Helen Bartlett and Pauline Gazdik, both of Youngstown, Ohio; brothers, George Babyak of Palm Desert, Calif., and Johnny Babyak of Youngstown, Ohio; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Cremation was private at Bradshaw Crematory in Prescott Valley, with burial in the family plot in Youngstown, Ohio.

Dorothy Drew
Dorothy Sullivan Drew, 52, a former Prescott resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in Buckeye.
She was born Jan. 30, 1947, in Prescott, to Leonard and Violet Sullivan.
Mrs. Drew was educated in the Prescott schools, and graduated from Prescott High School in 1965. She attended Arizona State University.
She worked as a real estate agent, and then joined Allstate Insurance in 1977 as a sales agent.
Mrs. Drew is survived by her husband of 17 years, Don Drew; sons, Daren Van Dyke, Jason Van Dyke and Don Drew II; daughters, Tobie and Rendee Drew; sister, Alice Kring of Prescott; brother, George Sullivan of Florida; stepmother, Dorothy Sullivan of Prescott; and one granddaughter.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Southern Baptist Church, 405 N. Third St. in Buckeye.

Cody Hall
Cody Leon Hall, 68, formerly of Prescott, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix.
He was born Sept. 2, 1931, in Seminole, Okla., to Harlan and Ivolene (Groves) Hall. He lived in Prescott from 1932 to 1984, then moved to Phoenix 15 years ago.
Mr. Hall served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War with H Company, 38th Infantry, from 1950 to 1953. He was a tech sergeant who also served with the occupation forces in Germany, and he earned the combat infantry badge and U.N. Service medal-Korean Service medal with two bronze service stars.
He worked for the Arizona State Highway Department from 1953 to 1963. He opened the Humble Oil Service Station on West Gurley Street.
As an auto mechanic and car salesman, Mr. Hall worked for Downtown Motor Mart, Kuykendahl Motors, Charley Halland Auto Broker, and was part owner of Kachina Motors in Prescott.
After moving to Phoenix in 1984, Mr. Hall worked at the Estate Auto Sales in Youngtown.
Mr. Hall enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking around the hills of Arizona.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Hall of Surprise; his mother, Ivolene Hall of Glendale; daughter, Mirenda Ezell of Prescott; brother, Mike, of Gilbert; sisters, Lavon Wight of Avondale, Mary Rankin of Arkansas and Gwen Johnson of Oregon; and one granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Hampton Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Prescott United Methodist Church, 505 W. Gurley St., with the Rev. Dan Hurlbert officiating.

Grace Edson
Grace Marie Edson, 95, of Prescott, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center.
She was born as Maria Gracia Serafine on May 31, 1904, in Waterbury, Conn., to Bartholemew Serafine and Maria Micheal DiCrosta.
Mrs. Edson had lived in Prescott for the last 68 years. She was a registered nurse who received her degree from the Hartford School of nursing in Hartford, Conn.
She worked for 40 years as a nurse, and in Prescott, at the Flynn Sanitar-ium, Mercy Hospi-tal and the County Hospital. When Mercy Hospital caught fire on June 8, 1940, Mrs. Edson was the only nurse on duty at the time. She was credited with evacuating and saving the lives of 35 patients in the hospital.
Mrs. Edson was a 63-year member of the Elks Ladies Auxiliary in Prescott. She and her first husband, John J. O'Keefe, joined the Elks in 1936. Her second husband, Leslie A. Edson, was also a member.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the American Nurses Association, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and the Prescott Campers Club.
Mrs. Edson enjoyed bowling, needlework, traveling, painting, playing the organ, games and cards.
She is survived by her daughters, Katherine Reardon of Morton, Ill., Charlotte Wilkins of Phoenix, and Leslie Lutey of Prescott; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Edson was preceded in death by her first husband, John J. O'Keefe, in 1934, and her second husband, Mr. Edson, in 1971.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Hampton Funeral Home, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

William Kane
William Stanley Kane, 65, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at his home in Prescott Valley.
He was born March 11, 1934, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Walter and Bernice (Riley) Kane.
Mr. Kane served in the Marine Corps during World War II.
He is survived by his sister, Joyce Hill, of Prescott Valley.

Ellene Peterson
Ellene Cleo Peterson, 67, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in Prescott Valley.
She was born Aug. 26, 1932, in Childress, Texas.
Mrs. Peterson loved traveling, RC model aircraft and reading. She was proudest of her children.
She is survived by her husband, Ron, of Prescott Valley; daughters, Rhonda Wickizer of Loma Linda, Calif., Rebecca Terry of Beaumont, Calif., and Rochelle Roberts of Yucaipa, Calif.; son, Randall Trunnell of Yucaipa, Calif.; brothers, David Freeman of California, Lonnie Freeman of Idaho, Donald Freeman of Nevada, and Jerry Freeman of N.Y.; sisters, Evie Leslie of Texas and Mildred Freeman and Helen Cluff, both of California; and 11 grandchildren.

Herman Pendergrass
Herman "Penny" Pendergrass, 86, of Prescott, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 2, 1912, in Hempstead, Texas, to Edgar George and Sally (Alford) Pendergrass.
Mr. Pendergrass served from 1932 to 1934 in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked as a union carpenter, as a barber in Flagstaff, and was an owner of the former Dugout Restaurant and Vista Drug in Cottonwood.
He enjoyed gardening and hunting.
Mr. Pendergrass moved to Flagstaff in 1932 from Hempstead, Texas, and to Cottonwood in 1946. In 1996 he moved to Prescott.
He was a 50-year member of the Carpenters Local 408 of Flagstaff.
Mr. Pendergrass is survived by his daughters, Charlotte Robinson of Cottonwood and Harriett Sivitor of Tucson; son, John of Prescott; brothers, Robert of Texas and William of Tempe; sister, Luela Elkins of Texas; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service and gathering will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1377 E. Hombre Drive, Cottonwood.
