Frank (Bud) Tassano
Apache Junction potter and craftsman, Frank (Bud) Tassano passed away at his home Saturday, August 24th after a brief illness. A long time resident of Apache Junction, Bud was best known for his "little red pots" which he made in his backyard factory and sold at the Greyhound Park and Swap under the family name TASSO. Every weekend Bud would sit at his painting table and add his own special desert scene to the pottery while his wife Helene sold from their colorful stand. Visitors enjoyed watching him paint while he encouraged them to try their own hand at artwork.
A U. S. Navy quartermaster during World War II, Bud piloted his LSM (landing ship medium) to 72 landings under fire on Iwo Jima. An artist and craftsman from childhood, Bud taught ceramics, leather working, weaving and other crafts to children and adults including his mother's Campfire Girls and at the county jail. Bud worked at Lockheed for 12 years while raising his children but otherwise made his living making crafts. During the 70 s, Bud and Helene traveled the United States in their hand built camper, making jewelry from enameled copper and feathers and selling it at art shows and swap meets. After five winters in Apache Junction, the Tassanos moved into the old Mickleson adobe in the East Side artist's community where they started their pottery business. Later they moved into town.
The family asks that as a memorial to Bud you make something with your hands and give it to someone you love.
Bud is survived by his wife Helene, three children, including local artist, Marcy Belzner, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for the Fall.
