Frank Newhall
Frank Newhall, affectionately known as 'The Birdman' of Galt, passed away on Nov. 5 from natural causes. He was 81.
He was born on march 8, 1921 in Merced. He served as a sergeant in the 406th Fighter Squadron during WWII. He moved to Acampo in 1969.
He was a retired Ag Inspector for San Joaquin County who owned and operated Newhall Birds in Acampo. He enjoyed birds and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Shelby and Edith Newhall.
He is survived by his children, William S. Newhall of Stockton, David F. Newhall of Lockeford, George 'Bud' Newhall, Thomas H. Newhall and Dan L. Newhall, all of Lodi, Lance F. Newhall of Herald, Dean F. Newhall of Acampo, and Cherie Rubley of Rio Vista; his sister, Clara Courtayou of Castro Valley; a brother, William S. Newhall of Merced; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be private.
Meryl Tufts
Meryl V. Tufts passed away on Oct. 31 at the age of 79. Born Dec. 10, 1922 in Galt, he was a Sacramento County resident for 79 years.
He served for five years in the Navy during WWII on the USS Northhampton. He survived its sinking in 1942. He also was on the USS Iowa.
A general contractor, he built many of the schools in Sacramento County until he retired in 1983. He raised and loved all kinds of animals.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lorraine '#####' Tufts, son Henry J. Tufts (Sherrie), daughters Merlaine Tufts (Tom Kisling), Diane Smith (David) and Debbie Goodall (Gene) and grandchildren Buffie, Jason and Jimmy, Brandy, Helen, Clinton, Charmyn and Jesse, also 10 great-grandchildren.
He will be missed by all who knew him, including his great buddies, Alan, Primo and Marcos.
At his request, no services will be held.
Louis Hoffman
Louis 'Butch' Hoffman passed away Nov. 9 after a brief bout with cancer. He was 59. Butch was born on July 9, 1943 in Mena, Arkansas. He spent the last 12 years as a resident of Lodi.
He and his wife Diana have been Galt's source of friendship and entertaining while conducting karaoke shows every Saturday night for the last three years.
He has also an avid fisherman; a father, friend and grandpa to many whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his wife, Diana Hoffman, and family.
Viewing will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.. to 3 p.m., and services are on Friday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m. with Eugene Duka officiating.

Marie I. Fay
Marie I. Fay Of Galt passed away from a brief illness on Nov. 7. She was 89.
She was born Marie I. Erdahl in St. Peter, Minnesota on March 12, 1913. She moved to Pinole in 1947 and settled in Galt to be closer to her family eight years ago.
Marie loved to spend time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren. She was famous for making each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren hand-made tied quilts which they cherish to this day.
She worked for 20 years as a food service worker for the Richmond School District and she was a long time member of the Catholic faith, most recently a member of the St.
Christopher parish in Galt. She was a dedicated church member and made every effort to always attend church regardless of how she was feeling.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Morris and husband Ray of Galt; her sons, William Fay and wife Joanne of Napa, and Gerald Fay and wife Diane of Richmond; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Jean Fay of Pinole.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Fay; her sons, James Fay and George E. Fay; and three brothers, Earl, Bennett and Henry Erdahl.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. at the St. Christopher parish in Galt. Father Jerry Ryle will officiate. Committal will follow the service the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in San Pablo.

Tony Bettencourt
Anthony Joseph (Tony) Bettencourt of Lodi, formerly of Galt, passed away in Lodi at the age of 87 on April 19, 2004. Mr. Bettencourt was born in Arroyo Grande on Oct. 18, 1916 to Aniceto and Isabel Flores Bettencourt, who were both born in the Azores.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He moved to the Galt area from Dixon, having spent 12 years as a dairyman in these areas. He later was a truck driver for five years. He retired in 1982 as maintenance supervisor for the Galt elementary school district.
He was a member of St. Christopher's Catholic Church for many years and, most recently, St. Anne's Catholic Church in Lodi. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and playing his harmonica, but most importantly his great love was his family, particularly his grandchildren.
Surviving him are his children, Don and Susan Bettencourt of Lodi, Ron and April Bettencourt of Lodi, Trina and Jim Miller of Galt; son-in-law, Fred Maciel; eight grandchildren, Tamara Bannan, Walter Maciel, Trisha Maciel, Brooke Bettencourt, Shannon Stephens, Tessa Grimm, Delaney Bettencourt and Christopher Miller; four great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Stephens, Nathan and Joshua Grimm and Maxwell Banna; brother, Joe Bettencourt of Washington; and sister, Mabel Ladino of Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Bettencourt; daughter, Tonya Maciel; brother, Manuel Bettencourt; and sister, Mary Reis.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 23 at St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Galt. Committal followed at the Galt Cemetery.

Red Stallings
Oral "Red" Stallings, age 84, passed away on April 23, 2004 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton.
Red was born in Fagus, Missouri on Dec. 21, 1919 and grew up in that area. After graduation from school, he married his high school sweetheart, Mildred Piatt. They lived in Missouri for several years with their two small children.
In 1946, Red and his family moved to California to set up residency in the San Joaquin County area where they lived for the remainder of his life. Red worked for Teichert Construction Company for many years before retiring in 1981 to his ranch on Buck Road in Acampo.
After retirement, Red was able to do what he loved best, devote his full time to his beloved Stallings Ranch, which prospered even more over the next 24 years. Red was well known for his outstanding beef cattle. He helped and taught others how to raise cattle during his 35 years of building a successful ranch. Red continued working fulltime until the last several months of his life.
Surviving Red are his beloved wife, Mildred; son, Pete Stallings; daughter, Jan Stallings; brother, Nath Stallings; sister, Marge Jeffries of Galt; grandson, Mike Stallings; granddaughter, Shelley L. Bass; two great-granddaughters, two nieces and two nephews.
Viewing will be Wednesday, April 28, from 4-8 p.m.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 29, at 2 p.m. at the Ben Salas Funeral Home in Galt with a burial service immediately following at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery in Lodi. A reception will be held at the Grange Hall following the service for those who would like to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the Stallings family is requesting that any donations offered be sent to the American Heart Association in Stockton.
Verne W. Hoffman
Verne W Hoffman, Jr. passed away on Friday, April 23, 2004 at his home in Acampo, at the age of 83.
A fourth generation Californian, he was born April 8, 1921 in Lodi, the son of Verne W. Hoffman and Ethel Vera Jack. Verne graduated Lodi High School in 1938. He played on the Lodi High School basketball team that won the Central California Championship in 1938. He was also a member of the Lodi High FFA Livestock Judging team that won FFA National Championship in 1938.
Verne was captain of the Sacramento JC basketball team in 1941-42. He was also captain of the Utah State College basketball team and won all-conference honors for the 1942-43 season. Verne served as an officer in the US Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific theatre.
After the war, Verne married Bonna Jones of Overton, Nevada. The new family settled on the farm on Dustin Road where Verne resided for the remainder of his life. Three children were born to Verne and Bonna before she passed away in 1955.
In 1956, Verne married Margaret Glover of Chico. Margaret helped Verne raise his three children, along with her own three children from her previous marriage. Margaret passed away in 1982. In 1983, Verne married Patricia Faber of Lodi.
Verne bred and raised registered hogs and sheep for many years, and exhibited his animals for more than 60 years at the California State Fair and many other state and national livestock exhibitions.
He served as president of the California Berkshire Association (hogs) and president of the National Shropshire Association (sheep). He supplied livestock to many local area 4-H and Future Farmer youth and judged livestock at many local fairs throughout the western states.
He worked as a farm and land appraiser for the Federal Land Bank of the Farm Credit System for more than 25 years.
Aside from his farming activities, Verne became involved in community work, serving as a member of the Galt High School board of trustees from 1953 to 1966, and also serving as the president of the Lodi District Chamber of Commerce in 1959. Verne was inducted into the Lodi area Sports Hall of Fame in 1978.
Verne joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1955 and served in church teaching and leadership positions in the Lodi area for the remainder of his life.
He was proud of his pioneer California ancestry and served in many committees and boards in support of local historical activities. He also tirelessly pursued genealogical research into his own family ancestry. He traveled throughout the U.S. and to Europe to research his lines. He founded and led several family organizations and frequently hosted extended family reunions at his ranch
Verne is survived by his wife, Patricia; his sister, Marolyn Stanley of Piedmont; three children, Gary B. Hoffman of San Diego, Bonna Kay Freeman of San Diego, Roger V. Hoffman of Orem, Utah; three stepsons (sons of Margaret), Norman R. Glover of Woodland, Gordon K. Glover of Long Beach, and Stephen A. Glover of Galt; three stepchildren (children of Patricia), Mary Alice Drew of Healdsburg, James Faber, currently residing in Australia, and Clare Faber of Lodi; 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Lodi on Tuesday, April 27. Interment was at the Harmony Grove Cemetery in Lockeford.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Galt Area Historical Society or to the Harmony Grove Church Fund or the San Joaquin County Department of Parks and Recreation.
Carl J. Aldridge
Memorial services have been scheduled for Carl John Aldridge, born on May 6, 1961, who passed away on April 5, 2004. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 30, at the Lodi Memorial Cemetery. Pastor Mary Sanders from the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church will officiate. Committal was at Lodi Memorial Cemetery.

Sarban Singh
Sarban Singh of Acampo passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, 2004 in a Stockton Hospital at the age of 62.
Mr. Singh was born July 17, 1942 in Tavua, Fiji Islands to Lakia and Rampati Singh. He owned and operated SS Delivery Singh Trucking of Stockton for many years. He was a member of the Sikah Temple of Sacramento as well as the Heavy Equipment Operators Union AFLCIO Local #3 of Hawaii.
He will be best remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jit Singh of Acampo; one son, Gurdev Singh of Acampo; one daughter, Baljeet Singh of Galt; five brothers, Prakash Singh, Shankar Singh and Malkeet Singh of Acampo, and Gurdayal Singh and Kabal Singh of Lodi; two sisters, Pritan Kaur of Acampo and Prakesh Kaur of Lodi; and four grandchildren.
A chapel service was held Sept. 11 at the Lodi Funeral Home, followed by an inurnment service at the Lodi Memorial Park Cemetery.
Sue Steffani
Sue Steffani, 66 of Galt, died Sept. 6, 2004 of congestive heart failure. She was born Sept 24, 1937 in Hunt County, Texas.
She lived in Los Angeles County for 50 years and moved to Galt four years ago. She retired as a nurse at county hospital.
Survivors are her loving husband and caregiver, John Steffani; daughters, Susan, Chrissi and Twyla.
Her daughter, Robin, preceded her in death.
The loves of her life were her eight grandchildren, her brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and many extended family members.
A memorial service was held Sept. 11 at Ben Salas Funeral Home. Pastor Rob Patterson officiated.
Arlyne Bassett
Arlyne Bassett, a resident of Elk Grove and then Galt since 1982, died Sept.6, 2004, her 65th wedding anniversary, at the age of 84. She would have celebrated her 85th birthday on Sept. 10.
In both towns she was known for her enjoyment of the game of bridge. She also possessed a great sense of history and belonged to both the Elk Grove and Galt historical societies, as well as the Elk Grove Newcomers.
In Galt she volunteered with CAPS (Citizens Assisting in Police Services) and served on an advisory committee for transportation for seniors.
Mrs. Bassett was born in Wisconsin and grew up in Madison where she met her future husband, Jerry Bassett, at high school graduation in 1936. The two attended neighboring schools. They were married in 1939, and lived in Wisconsin until World War II when he became a civilian flight instructor and they were stationed throughout the United States, including New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Texas.
In 1959 the family moved to Contra Costa County in California where Mr. Bassett managed radio station KKIS and started Channel 42. His career was spent in radio and television, and the family lived in southern California, Las Vegas, Texas and Stone Mountain, Ga. before retiring in Elk Grove. He died in 1991 after which Mrs. Bassett moved to Galt.
During the pre-retirement years, Mrs. Bassett became involved in property management, including a stint in the Hollywood area where she met several movie stars, "all with lots of problems," she said.
Besides her husband, her son, Robin Charles, preceded her in death.
Surviving Mrs. Bassett are her children, Jerry Bassett and wife Andrea of Montgomery, Ala., and Lynn Holly of Plattsburg, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Anna Holly Bassett of Portland, Ore., Christian Jerry Bassett of Sacramento and Tracy Guzzio and husband Tom of New York; and a great-grandchild, Mirren Ena Guzzio.

JERRY T. WATSON
Jerry T. Watson of Galt passed away in Lodi on January 4, 2005 at the age of 79. Mr. Watson was born in Portsmouth, Iowa on May 8, 1925 to Iva and Ruic Watson. He moved to Galt with his family when he was ten years old, leaving when he was 20 when he moved to Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII from 1943-46. On May 22, 1951, he married LaVose Lungren in Omaha, Nebraska. Jerry was self-employed as an owner-operator in the trucking industry. He retired in 1987 and moved back to Galt in 1988 with his wife. He enjoyed horses, music, gardening and cooking. Mr. Watson is survived by his wife, LaVose Watson of Galt; daughter, Joan (John) Demgen of Diablo; 3 granddaughters, Jennifer (Thomas) Flint of San Francisco, Megan (Scott) Smith of Silverthorne, Colorado and Elizabeth ( Chip) Lyles of Reno. A Memorial service will be held on Tuesday at Galt Funeral Home at 11:00 AM with Chaplain Tony Berry officiating. Committal will be private. A reception will immediately follow the service at Heritage Park Clubhouse in Galt. There is no visitation. George W. Brown, Sr.
Former Lodi resident George W. Brown, Sr. of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away at the age of 81 in a Phoenix hospital on Jan. 3, 2005.
He was born May 4, 1923 in Geneva, New York and grew up in Rochester, New York. After high school, George joined the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater, where he received the Purple Heart, and the Silver Star while in Italy.
After the war, he began a career in trucking where he spent the next 25 years in various capacities in the industry. In retirement, he and his wife managed mobile home parks. George enjoyed drinking coffee, bowling and tinkering in his shop.
In 1998, they moved to the area, living in Stockton, Galt and Lodi. After his wife's passing in 2000, George returned to New York before moving to Phoenix four months ago. He was a life member of VFW Post #9400 in Sunnyslope, Arizona.
Survivors include one daughter, Lynn Hendricks of Galt; two sons, George Brown, Jr. of Phoenix and Steven Brown of Phoenix; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances Hennessey of Rochester, New York.
His wife, Verna A. Brown, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Jan. 7 at Cherokee Memorial Park. Burial followed at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Theodore L. Banker
Theodore Leroy Banker, 77, of Galt, died Dec. 27, 2004 at Mather Veterans Hospital. He was born July 31, 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey.
The second of four children born to Edna Mae and George John Banker, he grew up in Trenton. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he stayed in California. He was a disabled veteran with a long illness of coronary artery disease.
There will be no services. Donations may be made to a favorite charity. Ben Salas Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Emanuel Oswald
Emanuel Oswald of Galt passed away from natural causes on January 7, 2004. He was 92.
He was born in Eureka, SD on April 3, 1912 and was a resident of the Galt area since 1946. He was retired from the remodeling business and enjoyed camping, traveling, helping people and being with his family.
His children Len and Joe Oswald; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; five sisters and one brother survive him.
He was preceded in death by his wife Eva and son Elroy.
A funeral service is scheduled for January 13, 2005 at the Ben Salas Funeral Home located at 149 Fourth Street in Galt. Pastor Mary Sanders of the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church will officiate. Committal will follow at the Galt Cemetery.

Janice E. Lewis
Jeff J. Tramel
Jeff J. Tramel (95) of Galt died Aug. 20, 2006 at a local hospital after a brief illness. He was born July 5, 1911 in Mangum, Okla., and has lived in Modesto, Vallejo, Sacramento and Davis before moving to Galt in 1966.
Mr. Tramel worked as a bricklayer and hod carrier; he did other tasks in construction and received a certificate for 50 years of service from laborer's International Union of North America.
Mr. Tramel was a ministerial servant of Jehovah's Witnesses in Galt, Sacramento, Modesto and Vallejo. He was always prepared to share a Bible hope with anyone at anytime. He truly wanted everyone to know of Jehovah's promise of a peaceful righteous government ruling over mankind here in a paradise earth.
Surviving him are his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Tramel of Galt; children, Joy of Texas, Don of Lincoln Hills, and Wanda of Sacramento; brother, Neil Tramel; sister, Loma Coley of Modesto; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were a daughter, Hazel in 2000 and a brother, Buster in February 2006.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2 with the Galt congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses at 14052 S. Lincoln Way, with Brother Frank Susich officiating.

Antonio S. Rodriguez
Antonio Sanchez Rodriguez (70) of Galt died Aug. 23, 2006 of natural causes at a Sacramento hospital. He was born in Oaxaca, Mexico on Dec. 18, 1935 and came to the United States in 1953 as a bracero.
Mr. Rodriguez worked throughout the U.S. as a migrant farm worker, then with Silva's Ranch in Herald. He lived in Herald from 1962 to 1974 and in Galt for 32 years. He retired in 2001 as a mason with Hanson Concrete Pipe.
Mr. Rodriguez enjoyed gardening, fishing, bicycling, dancing and entertaining family and friends. He was a member of St. Christopher's Catholic Church. He will be greatly missed and always in the hearts of those who knew him.
Surviving him are his wife of 43 years, Teresa A. Rodriguez of Galt; sons, Antonio Rodriguez, Jr., Roman Rodriguez, Catalino Cervantes, Nader Alnayem and Rafael Rodriguez, Jr.; daughters, Monica Cervantes, Norma Rodriguez, Maricela Rodriguez, Michele Rodriguez and Maria Rodriguez; and 13 grandchildren.
Mass was held Monday at St. Christopher's, followed by committal at Galt Cemetery.

Lloyd E. Grube
Lloyd E. Grube (81) passed away Aug. 24, 2006 in Carmichael. He was born Feb. 17, 1925 in Richmond.
Lloyd was a printer by trade, a craftsman by hobby, and a sailor at heart. He was a World War II Army veteran and will be missed by all.
Lloyd leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Joan (Jody) Grube, whom he met through the youth group at First Methodist Church in Lodi; sons, Larry Grube of Carmichel, Ken (Melani) Grube and family of Fair Oaks, Cliff (Anne) Grube of Bend, Ore.; sisters, Darlene Cooper and family of Boise, Idaho and Muriel Lampkin and family of Modesto; and sister-in-law, Glenda Kelley and family of Lodi.
Services were held on Monday, Aug. 28 at the Cherokee funeral home in Lodi.

Ronald C. Biles
Funeral services will be held for Ronald Cole Biles on at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31 at the Open Bible Church, 3801 Camino Andres Way in Bay Point.
Mr. Biles passed away Aug. 25, 2006. He was the loving husband of Jean Harlow Biles.
Friends are welcome for visitation on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 12 to 8 p.m. at Galt Funeral Home, 702 B Street.
Interment will be at Galt Cemetery. Galt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Janice E. Lewis
Janice Elaine Lewis (60) entered into rest peacefully on July 2, 2006 in San Jose. She was born May 17, 1946.
Janice worked as a supervisor for TLC Kids. Her passion for working with children will always be remembered by family and friends she made throughout life's journey.
Surviving are her children, Dale Lewis, Jr. (Priscilla), Deborah Shields (Raymond, Jr.) Kimberly Oliver (Joseph), Carrie Martin (Jim), and Donnie Lewis; grandchildren Shane, Gary, Tracy, Ian, Alexandra, Travis and Tiana; mother, Helen Shrum; brothers, Dewane, Doug and Jerry; and former husband, Dale Lewis, Sr.
Preceding her in death were her father, Johnnie Shrum, and grandson, Jason Oliver.

Jake Schneider
Jake L. Schneider, a native and lifelong resident of Sloughhouse, and a leader in the beef industry, died Aug. 21, 2006 at the age of 90.
He was born Feb. 1, 1916, a fourth generation cattleman who ranched in Sacramento and El Dorado counties and the state of Nevada. His grandfather, Henry Schneider, established the Schneider Ranch in Sloughhouse in 1905.
At age 26, Mr. Schneider was chosen by the Swift Meat Packing Co. for a national tour promoting beef. In 1952 he was elected president of the California Cattlemen's Association, the youngest to serve in that position.
Michigan State College recognized him as one of four in the nation in 1954 during their centennial for his modern ranching practices, and in 1960 he was honored as California Livestock Man of the Year. His picture is now permanently displayed at the San Francisco Cow Palace along with other winners.
Mr. Schneider was also a founding member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the California Beef Council.
He grew up in Sloughhouse, graduating from Elk Grove High School in 1935, where he was a member of the Future Farmers of America.
Mr. Schneider was active in community affairs, serving as a charter trustee of both the Elk Grove Unified School District and Cosumnes River Union School. The latter district was formed from four small schools including the Rhoads and Michigan Bar schools.
He was a founding director of the Sloughhouse Resource Conservation District, the Omochumne Hartnell Water District, and director of the Michigan Bar Fire District when it merged with the Sloughhouse Fire District. He was also a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Latrobe for 75 years.
Mr. Schneider was preceded in death by his wives, Virginia Wilson Schneider and Eleanore Case Schneider; special friend, Janie Orr; and grandson, Justin Lawrence Schneider.
He is survived by sons, Jay Schneider and wife Susan and Leland Schneider and wife Kathy, all of Sloughhouse; grandsons, Jake James and fiance' Jaime, Leland Henry and wife Julie, and Jared Thomas and wife Shady; and great-grandchildren, Rene, Regina and Rowdy.
Mr. Schneider was the brother of Betty N. Mehrten of Sloughhouse and Dorothy J. Kloss of Elk Grove.
Graveside services were held Aug. 26 at East Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento. Remembrances may be made to the Livestock Memorial Research Fund, c/o California Cattlemen's Association, 1221 H St., Sacramento, CA 95814.
