Judy Layton
Judy Layton, 55, of Phoenix died Monday, June 26, 2000.

Ms. Layton was born Feb. 14, 1945, in Berryville. She was an operator for AT&T.

She is survived by a son, Robert Scott Layton; two brothers, Rodney Huff and Ricky Huff; and two grandsons.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greer-Wilson Funeral Home, Phoenix.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ora N. Mayne
Ora N. Mayne, 87, of Falling Waters, W.Va., died Wednesday, June 28, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mrs. Mayne was born March 5, 1913, in Green County, Pa., the daughter of Charles and Sarah Campbell.

She is survived by a son, David F. Mayne of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Madalyn K. Dominico, is deceased.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, Martinsburg. Burial will be in the Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Paul R. Pinkett
Paul R. Pinkett, 85, of Washington, D.C. died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at Heartland Healthcare Center in Adelphi, Md.

Mr. Pinkett was born Nov. 20, 1914, in Bentonville, the son of Curry T. and Florence E. Ford Pinkett. He worked in the custodial department at American Viscose for more than 20 years before retiring in 1978.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of the Elks, the Masonic Lodge, and Mary Magdeline Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Front Royal.

He married Myrtle Travis in September 1940. She died in 1978.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary P. Davis of Washington D.C.; and three sisters, Ella Mae Allen of Bentonville, Odelle E. Brooks of Front Royal; and Minnie Ann Burke of North Fort Myers, Fla.; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home Chapel, Front Royal, officiated by the Rev. Alfred Woods. Burial will be in Pinkett-Brown Cemetery in Bentonville.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Randy Kaleb Deavers
Randy Kaleb Deavers, the infant son of Wesley S. and Tanya Shane Pruitt Deavers, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000 at Warren Memorial Hospital.

Randy is survived by his parents; two brothers, Aaron Dale Carroll and Jacob Ryan Deavers, both of Browntown; his maternal grandparents, Ida May Pruitt of Front Royal and Glen Roger Pruitt of Wisconsin; his paternal grandparents, Donnie A. and Nancy Reardon Deavers of Browntown; and great-grandparents Alice Pruitt of Wisconsin and Irene Mae Thomas of Browntown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home Chapel, Front Royal, officiated by the Rev. Sanford Blankenship. Burial will be at Panorama Memorial Gardens, Warren County.

Memorials may be made to Warren Memorial Hospital, Women’s Care Center.

Robert L. Smith Jr.
Robert Lee Smith Jr., 70, of 186 Knob Road, Gore, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Smith was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Frederick County, the son of Nellie Strother and Robert Lee Smith Sr. He was a farmer and worked in the finishing department at ABEX for 41 years before retiring in March 1996. he was a member and former deacon of the Hebron Baptist Church.

He married Patricia Hollis on June 8, 1951 in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Robert Lee Smith III of Gore and David L. Smith of Chesapeake; a sister, Virginia Rippeon of Damascus, Md.; and one granddaughter.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Omps Funeral Home with the Rev. George Reed officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Clark Nail, Lyndall Anderson, Steve Holliday, Johnny Holliday, Beverley LaFollette, and Robert G. Whitacre.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Omps Funeral Home.

Mary B. Affleck
Mary Bessie Affleck, 84, formerly of Valley Avenue, Winchester, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Affleck was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Rappahannock County. She was a cafeteria worker at O’Sullivan Co. and a member of First Baptist Church in Winchester.

She was married to Charles E. Affleck Jr. in Brunswick, Md.

Surviving with her husband, are a son, William Dennis Martin of Winchester; two daughters, Carol Ann Affleck of Charlotte, N.C., and Sandra K. Whitacre of Alexandria; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Winchester, with the Rev. Warren Boling officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Ashby, Carroll Martin, Richard Morris, Rodney Affleck, Ernie Affleck, and Jack Ryan.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home.

G. Lucille Crouse
Gwendolyn Lucille “Jim” Crouse, 73, of Capon Springs, W.Va., died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Crouse was born Nov. 5, 1926, in Capon Springs, the daughter of Ashby and Daisy Orndorff Himelwright. She worked at Capon Springs and Farms as a laundry supervisor. She attended the Willow Chapel United Methodist Church, Capon Springs.

Surviving are two sons, Junior Crouse and Robert L. Crouse, both of Capon Bridge; a sister, Pauline “Polly” Spaid of Hagerstown, Md. ; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hebron Lutheran Church, Yellow Spring, with Pastor Rob Lovett officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Michael Lineburg, Wayne LaFollette, Howard Riegel, Eddie Whitacre, John Himelright, and Frank Brill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

Charles W. Dawson
Charles Woodward Dawson, 76, of Round Hill, died June 27, 2000, in Loudoun Hospital Center.

Mr. Dawson was born April 13, 1924, to Charles and Daisy Dawson in Fauquier.

He is survived by this wife of 50 years, Grace T. Dawson; mother Daisy Dawson of Philomont; two sons Charles A. Dawson of Stephenson and Gregory L. Dawson of Sterling; three daughters Belinda Poston of Winchester, Deborah Carter of Berryville, and Tammy fanning of Boyce; one sister Peggy Hawes of Philomont; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Hall Funeral Home of Purcellville from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Services will be held at the funeral home at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Interment will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Round Hill Fire and Rescue Squad or the Philomont Fire and Rescue Squad.

Ralph H. Jolley
Ralph Harrison Jolley, of Salem, Ore., died June 18, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Jolley was born Jan. 30, 1926, in Unger, W.Va., the son of James P. and Leslie Hovermale Jolley.

He retired in 1973 after 20 years in the Air Force, with the rank of senior master sergeant. He was instrumental in the training and teaching of radar relating to missiles at the Air Force Academy.

He had served with the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was married to Avis Felina Smith.

Surviving with his wife, are a son, Ralph H. Jolley Jr. of Winchester; a sister, Ruth Keiter of Stephenson; two brothers, Clark W. Jolley of Winchester and John E. Jolley of Arlington; two stepchildren, a granddaughter, and a great granddaughter.

Burial was private.

William A. Sager
William Allen “Al” Sager, 53, of 7276 Cherokee Trail, Theodore, Ala., died Sunday, June 25, 2000, in Alabama.

Mr. Sager was born Dec. 9, 1946, in Winchester, the son of William Winfred and Nancy Clevenger Sager. He worked at Ingralls Ship Building as a marine designer. He earned a bachelor’s degree in European history from the College of William and Mary and an associate’s degree in engineering technology from Virginia Commonwealth University.

He was an army veteran of the Vietnam War, with the rank of E-5.

He was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Unitarian Universalist Church.

Surviving with his parents, of Winchester, are two daughters, Jennifer C. Sager of Bowie, Md., and Brigitte Y. Sager of Seattle; and a son, Christopher C. Sager of Theodore, Ala.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ernie Lee, James Keffer, Todd Whitacre, Kurt Clevenger, Charles Merritt Jr., and Richard Allanson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Grace V. Sager
Grace Virginia Sager, 85, of Wardensville, W.Va., died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Sager was born March 12, 1915, in Yellow Spring, W.Va., the daughter of Thomas and Virgie Anderson Davis. She was a member of Faith Mission Church, Wardensville, where she was a board member and treasurer for many years. She was a member of Capon Valley Ruritan Club in Yellow Spring and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 102, Moorefield, W.Va.

She was married to Jesse E. Ferrell.

Her first husband, Walter L. Sager, died Dec. 10, 1982.

Surviving with her husband, are four sons, Donald L. Sager, George W. Sager, Gregory D. Sager, all of Wardensville, and Stephen Sager of Yellow Spring; three daughters, Betty Sayres of Rock Cave, W.Va., Roth Livermore and Sherry Thomas, both of Winchester; 24 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Mission Church, Wardensville, with Pastor David Garns and the Rev. Larry Draper officiating. Burial will be in Timber Ridge Cemetery, High View, W.Va.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Keegan, Mark Satterfield, Dennis Brill, James Fridley, Gary Northcraft, and Neil Dolly.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville.

Audrey V. Schell
Audrey V. Reel Schell, 83, of Dorcas, W.Va., died Monday, June 26, 2000 at her home.

She was born Jan. 15, 1917 in Maysville, W.Va., the daughter of Ira T. and Alma McDonald Reel.

She was a homemaker and member of Maysville United Methodist Church.

She was married to Ernest Ellis Schell, who died Nov. 11, 1989.

Surviving are four sons, Warren William Schell of Dorcas, W.Va., Daniel Leon Schell of Petersburg, W.Va., Ira Wendell Schell of Stafford, and Robert Thornton Schell of Bunker Hill, W. Va.; four daughters, Bonnie Lou Grimes of Spotsylvania, Alma Yvonne Schell of Jefferson, Ga., Eleanor Jean Feaster of Petersburg, W.Va., and Margaret Elaine Carr of Winchester; three brothers, William Reel and Wayne Reel of Petersburg, W.Va., and Glenn Reel of El Paso, Texas; 18 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ellen Schell; and three sons, Ernest Ellis Schell Jr., Kenneth Lee Schell, and Richard Allan Schell.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, W.Va.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stanley Kile officiating. Burial will be at the Maysville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Maysville United Methodist Church or Maysville Volunteer Fire Company.

Lillie V. Turner
Lllie V. Turner, 84, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Winchester, died Saturday, June 24, 2000.

Miss Turner was born Dec. 20, 1916, in Clarke County, the daughter of the Rev. Newton Turner and Helena Turner.

Surviving are a brother, Thomas R. Turner of Washington; and a sister, Trilby Togans of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Tenth Street Baptist Church, Washington. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester.

The family will receive friends one hour before the time of the service at the church.

Geraldine M. Zuniga
Geraldine “Gerry” Mason Zuniga, 64, of 27 S. Cameron St., Winchester, died Monday, June 26, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Ms. Zuniga was born May 16, 1936, in Romney, W.Va., the daughter of Norval and Effie Mae Crouse Mason. She was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph Martin Zuniga of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Robert Zuniga of Cedar Lake, Ind.; four sisters, Gladys Mason of Daytona Beach, Fla., Dorothy Sergeant, Annabell Mason and Margaret Landis, all of Frederick County; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Rosedale Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ken H. Smith officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Geraldine Zuniga Burial Fund, 822 Butler Ave., Winchester 22601.

Doris A. Adler
Doris Ann Adler, 65, of Front Royal, died Monday, June 26, 2000 at her home.

Mrs. Adler was born June 2, 1935 in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Gladys Pilkerton Ott of Oxon Hill, Md., and Robert Aiken Boone. She was a retired secretary with the Warren Memorial Hospital Operating Room. She was a member of the Warren Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving with her mother and her husband William F. Adler are three daughters, Terri Heishman of Chardon, Ohio, Tammy Foreman of Winchester, and Tina Carter of Front Royal; two sisters, Joyce Dilda of Springfield and Jane Brula of Dale City; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Chaplain W.D. Barton officiating.

John S. Balenger
John Sewell Balenger, 70, of Bunker Hill, W.Va., died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Mr. Balenger was born Sept. 25, 1929, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the son of Raymond S. and Eleanor Thatcher Balenger.

He was retired from Crown, Cork and Seal and had been a dairy farmer in Berkeley County for a number of years.

He was a 1947 graduate of Bunker Hill High School and a former pilot with the Berkeley County Civil Air Patrol.

He was a member of the Berkeley County Farm Bureau and Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church.

He was married to Ida Loretta LaCount for 50 years.

Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Raymond L. “Butch” Balenger and John Richard Balenger, both of Bunker Hill; two daughters, Nancy L. Shipper of Jones Springs, W.Va., and Sharon A. Balenger of Morgantown, W.Va.; a brother, James H. Balenger of Martinsburg, W. Va.; two sisters, Betty Bealman of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Rebecca Smith Ritchey of Louisville, Ky.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John E. Harris officiating. Burial will be private.

John C. Catlett
John C. Catlett, 60, of 912 Round Hill Road, Winchester, died Monday, June 26, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Catlett was born April 23, 1940, in Brucetown, the son of John Calvin and Margaret Newlin Catlett. He was a landscape technician at Smalts Garden Center in Winchester.

He was a 1960 graduate of James Wood High School and a member of Rosedale Baptist Church, Winchester.

He married Hilda Smallwood on Oct. 14, 1961, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife, are three sons, Ricky A. Catlett of Gore, Robert L. Catlett of Boyce, and William D. Catlett of Stephens City; two grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with the Rev. Anthony Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be private at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James R. Morrison
James Reed Morrison, 69, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Morrison was born Sept. 11, 1930, in Morgan County, W.Va., the son of James E. and Margaret Ann Swaim Morrison.

He was a sales representative of The Adventure Inn on Hilton Head Island and had retired.

He was an Army veteran and a member of Hilton Head Island Church of Christ.

He was married to Holly Lewis.

Surviving with his wife, and his mother, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., are a son, Wesley Morrison of Florida; three sisters, Betty Ann Howard of Nashville, Tenn., Mary Ruth Dubard and Nancy Elizabeth Morrison, both of Atlanta; four brothers, Lewis Paul Morrison, David Wayne Morrison and Andrew Carroll Morrison, all of Berkeley Springs, and Matthew Clifton Morrison of Nashville.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Duckwall Church of Christ, with the Rev. Matthew Clifton Morrison officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.
