Mary Elizabeth Meade Kump, 76, of 2303 Senseny Road, Winchester, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Kump was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Russell County, the daughter of Wiley and Rudy Skeens Meade. She attended Bethel United Methodist Church.
She was married to Melvin H. “Mo” Kump, who died in 1980.
Surviving are a daughter, Ann Kump of Winchester; two brothers, Brady M.J. Meade of Gore and Jesse H. Meade of High View, W.Va.; five sisters, Myrtle Fogleman of Bristol, Tenn., Iva Marple and Loretta Wine Shuster, both of Winchester, Stella Mae Knotts of Staunton, and Mildred O. Jenkins of Strasburg.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church, Gore, with Pastor Joseph Shuster officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Wiley R. Wine, Kendall A. Wine, Mark D. Wine, Rodney S. Wine, Victor K. Wine, and Dane L. Meade.

Nell C. Putman
Nell Carter Putman, 74, of 140 Hackberry Dr., Stephens City, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Putman was born Dec. 2, 1925, in Berryville, the daughter of Edgar P. and Mildred Pingley Carter. She had been a legal secretary for Gilbert McKown.
She was a graduate of Clarke County High School and a member of Berryville Presbyterian Church.
She married William L. Putman on July 12, 1959, in Berryville.
Surviving are two sons, Bryan Patrick Putman of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Clark William Putman of Stephens City; a brother, Joe Carter of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Jane Ice of Laurel, Md.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Kirk Nave officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.
Pallbearers will be Joe Carter, Gary Elliott, Mark Ice, Clark Putman Jr., Jimmy Putman, and Pat Putman.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Leona V. Riggleman
Leona Virginia Flanagan Riggleman, 74, of Evergreen Health and Rehab Center, Winchester, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at Evergreen Health and Rehab Center.
Mrs. Riggleman was born May 14, 1926, in Cumberland, Md., the daughter of Olive Flanagan and Ethel Landis Flanagan.
She married Harmon Harris Riggleman on March 22, 1947, in Landes, W.Va.
Surviving are seven daughters, Donna Dove and Sandra Welch, both of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Jackie Fishel, Remona Coffman, and Wanda Fishel, all of Winchester; Cecilia Ross of Virginia Beach, and Cookie Riggleman of Berryville; two sons, Lonnie Riggleman and Tommy Riggleman, both of Berryville; a sister, Louise Landis Don of Littlestown, Pa.; two brothers, Elwood Robert Flanagan of Toledo, Ohio, and Richard Lee Flanagan of Romney, W.Va; 24 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
A son, Randy Riggleman, is deceased.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Bunker Hill Cemetery, Bunker Hill, W.Va., with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating.

Russell Smith Jr.
Russell Smith Jr., 76, of 1977 Copp Road, Fishers Hill, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000 in Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.
Mr. Smith was born Feb. 27, 1924, in Stanhope, N.J., the son of Russell and Josephine E. Conkiln Smith.
He served in the Army during World War II. He was a self-employed carpenter and attended the Community Prayer Breakfast in Woodstock.
He was married to Frances Rosol Smith.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Amy Teresa Ingrassia of Budd Lake N.J.; and a son, Robert Russell Smith of Norfolk.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. William Erbach Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Fishers Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided the Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg.
Pallbearers will be Gene Willis, Jim Clark, Bill Bausserman, Richard Bayliss, William Baker, and Leroy Henry.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. The family will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Michael Murray Smoot, infant son of Frank Forrest Smoot and Pamela Jean Timbrook Smoot, of Augusta, W.Va., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, in Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Surviving with his parents, are a brother, Patrick Forrest Smoot, at home; his maternal grandparents, Preston and Carolyn Timbrook of Augusta; his paternal grandparents, Barbara and William Smoot, both of Augusta; his maternal great-grandmother, Mabel McBride of Romney, W.Va.; his paternal great-grandparents, Eldridge and Rena Haines of Augusta; and his paternal great-great-grandmother, Hilda Wolford of Augusta.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Tearcoat Cemetery, Augusta, with Pastor Glenn Nissly officiating.

Rowena C. Whitacre
Rowena C. Whitacre, 95, formerly of Pikeside, W.Va., died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Lily of the Valley Personal Care Home.
Mrs. Whitacre was born Dec. 12, 1904, in Cross Junction, the daughter of Edward W. and Cornelia Collins Braithwaite.
She had been a school teacher in Frederick County.
She was married to Dr. Noble Dean Whitacre.
Surviving are two daughters, June W. Folk and Katy Frye, both of Nollville, W.Va., a son, Patrick Whitacre of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a sister, Jeanette Hoffman of Cross Junction; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at South Berkeley Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Whitacre.

Genevieve R. Fellers
Genevieve Rebecca Poston Fellers, 94, of Summit Point, W.Va. , died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, in Lynn Care Center, Front Royal.
Mrs. Fellers was born Aug. 31, 1905, in Middleway, W.Va.; a daughter of Walter W. and Edith Stickel Poston.
She retired after 25 years as the head cashier at J.J. Newberry in Charles Town, W.Va.
She was an active life member of the Summit Point United Methodist Church and a member of the choir. She was treasurer of the Methodist Church Charge for 30 years.
She was an active volunteer for the Jefferson County Chapter of the American Red Cross and a member of the Eastern Star and the Ruritan Auxiliary.
She was married to Howard Lee Fellers, who died Sept. 15, 1981.
Surviving is a sister, Ruth Poston Monnington of Front Royal.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va., with the Rev. Barbara Minter officiating. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

Minnie R. Bladen
Minnie R. Bladen, 87, of Berryville, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Bladen was born Dec. 19, 1912, in Clarke County, the daughter of Charles A. and Sarah Ellen Martin Royston.
She was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. She often attended the Catholic Church and supported numerous Catholic charities.
She was married to Raymond C. Bladen in Berryville. Mr. Bladen died Feb. 7, 1983.
Surviving are two sisters, Pauline V. Adams of Berryville and Lucy Peebles Witul of Leesburg.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with the Rev. Canon Dwight L. Brown officiating.

Mary F. Lillard
Mary Frances Burke Lillard, 73, of Winchester, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.
Mrs. Lillard was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Sperryville, the daughter of John Ashby and Bertha Hawkins Burke. She was retired from Avtex Fibers after 43 years.
She was a member of the local Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union and the New Bridge Baptist Church in Richmond.
She was married to Ernest Lillard.
Surviving with her husband, are a son, Douglas Ernest Lillard of Front Royal; a daughter, Nancy Lillard Barr of Winchester; and two granddaughters.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Jimmy Burke and the Rev. John Burke officiating. Burial will be in Sperryville Cemetery.

Harold W. Painter
Harold W. Painter, 63, of Oologah, Okla., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Painter was born July 7, 1936, the son of Cora and Luther Painter. He retired as a union electrician and served in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1957.
He was married to Jan Thomas.
Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Harold Painter Jr. of Davis, Okla., and Robert Painter of Homer, Alaska; a brother, James Painter of Woodbridge; three sisters, Thelma Bursey of Stephens City, Christine Wiseman of Greenville, N.C., and Virginia Davis of Gainesboro; and three grandsons.
A funeral and burial will be today in Tulsa, Okla.

Pauline Shrader
Pauline Shrader, 78, formerly of Fairfax Lane, White Post, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in Culpeper.
Mrs. Shrader was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Smith County, the daughter of Robert L. and Lora Gillespie Stevenson. She was a machine operator at Doubleday Co. and retired in 1984.
She married John Robert Shrader on Aug. 4, 1936, in Bristol, Tenn.
Surviving are a son, James D. Shrader of Orange; a daughter, Karen S. Slayden of White Post; two sisters, Hazel Powers of Haymarket and Helen Trip of Manassas; two brothers, Robert L. Stevenson of Marion and Louis Rutter of Haymarket; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A son, Joseph H. Shrader, is deceased.
A graveside service was at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pauline R. Edwards
Pauline R. “Polly” Edwards, 80, of National Avenue, Winchester, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, in Ashland.
Mrs. Edwards was born Dec. 26, 1919, in Winchester, the daughter of Fiorello and Rosa Lazzari Ramacciotti.
She was owner and operator of the Ramacciotti Deli in Winchester.
She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
She married Thomas L. Edwards on May 29, 1943.
Surviving are a son, Thomas Edwards Jr. of Stephens City; a daughter, Nancy Butler of Ashland; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Woody, Thomas Grim, Thomas Edwards Jr., Thomas Edwards III, Scott Butler, and David Butler.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends until 9 p.m.
Lynwood P. Graham
Lynwood O. “Buddy” Graham, 73, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died June 19, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Graham was born Sept. 8, 1926 in Morgan County, W. Va., the son of Barthol L. and Goldie McCoy Graham. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 39 years as a rural carrier.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy from Nov. 1944 to June 1946, receiving the American Theater Award and the Asiatic Pacific Award.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs. He also attended First United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs. He was also a member of the Morris Young Mens Chorus, American Legion Post 60, and the Rural Carriers Association.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian Adeline Graham and one son, Kevin L. Graham of Hagerstown, Md.

at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Little Cove, Pa.

Joseph D. May
Joseph Delmar “Joe” May, 59, of 1007 Clark Court, Harpers Ferry, W.Va., died Friday, June 16, 2000, at his home.
Mr. May was born April 6, 1941, in Carey, Ohio, the son of Curtis James and Donnie Conley May. He was a supervisor with Bell Atlantic and retired after more than 30 years.
He was a graduate of Oil Springs High School, Oil Springs, Ky.
He was a staff sergeant in the Army and served in Korea. He was a communications specialist at the White House during the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson administrations.
He was married to Patricia Jane Godlove, who died Nov. 1, 1991.
Surviving are a brother, Jack D. May of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; and a sister, Ruth Blanton of Carey, Ohio.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lynn Durbin officiating. Burial will be in Gainesboro Cemetery.

Pauline Smoot
Pauline “Polly” Smoot, 59, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at her home.
Ms. Smoot was born May 21, 1941, in Milton, N.C.; the daughter of Connie M. and Rosie Irvin Huffman. She worked at Capitol Records, Abex Corp., and Blue Ridge Toy Industry in Winchester.
Surviving are two sons, Robert E. “Bo” Pressley of Milton, N.C., and Daniel S. Pressley of Martinsville; a brother, Cecil Huffman of Hickory, N.C.; two sisters, Marie Shumaker of Yanceyville, N.C., and Shirley Fleming of Gastonia, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with the Rev. Elizabeth Frye officiating. Burial will be private at a later date.
Duane E. Wheeler
Duane Edward “Bud” Wheeler, 74, of 8939 Northwestern Pike, Gore, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, in Fairfax Hospital.
Mr. Wheeler was born Aug. 29, 1925, in Scranton, Pa., the son of Harold G. and Wealtha Moyer Wheeler.
He was retired from Southland Corp. after 20 years.
He retired from the Army, with the rank of captain, and served in World War II and Korea.
He married Doris Eleanor Kramer McGee on Sept. 23, 1973, in Fairfax.
Surviving with his wife, are three sons, Harold Gordon Wheeler of Anderson, S.C., Michael Edward Wheeler and Robert Allen Wheeler, both of Arlington; a stepdaughter, Mary Alexander of Stephens City; a stepson, Wesley G. Kramer of Albert Lee, Minn.; a sister, Neba Byers of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shenandoah Memorial Park, with Pastor Gene Jones officiating.

John H. Williams Sr.
John H. Williams Sr., 68, of Kent Circle, Winchester, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Williams was born June 10, 1932, in Winchester, the son of Charles F. and Rena Mahoney Williams. He was an auditor for the State of Virginia and retired July 1, 1984.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Strayer College.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, with the rank of petty officer first class.
He was a member of Winchester Moose Lodge 1283, American Legion Post 21, and the Church of Christ at Mt. View.
He married Ruby Shelburne on Dec. 12, 1955, in Winchester.
Surviving with his wife, are two sons, John H. Williams Jr. of Winchester and Charles F. Williams of Bridgewater; two daughters, Lillian M. Zuza of Manville, N.J., and Rena S. Virts of Winchester; two sisters, Helen Farrell of Stephens City and Martha Williams Layden of Winchester; three brothers, Charles F. Williams and Donald E. Williams, both of Winchester, and Joseph L. Williams of Jefferson, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Evangelist Charles Doughty and Chris Straley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with military honors accorded by VFW Post 2123 of Winchester.

Richard Henry “Dick” Nicholas, 62, of 2554 Bradford Court, Winchester, died Friday, June 16, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Nicholas was born April 19, 1938, in Erie, Pa., the son of Thomas Dockton and Rebecca Ann Love Nicholas. He served as a marketing director at Cox Cable Communications, retiring after 12 years.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing from the University of North Carolina and served as a private in the Army.
Surviving are his wife, Kitty Hockman; two daughters, Jacqueline Nicholas Hott and Shannon Nicholas Triplett, both of Winchester; two brothers, Thomas D. Nicholas Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., and Donald W. Nicholas of Sunrise, Fla.; and a granddaughter.
A funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hedgebrook Farm, with the Rev. David Witt officiating. A private burial will be in Hatteras, N.C.
