Katie I. Fowler
Katie I. Shepherd Fowler, 81, of 1639 Frogtown Road Bluemont, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Fowler was born May 11, 1919, in Frogtown, Clarke County, the daughter of Thomas Pooner Shepherd and Virginia Bolden Shepherd.

She was a member of Providence Chapel United Methodist Church.

She married Edward Berkley “Buck” Fowler in 1939 in Berryville. Mr. Fowler died March 11, 1988.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty Gibson of Bluemont; a brother, Wilton “Tom” Shepherd of Bluemont; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Thomas Keithley officiating. Burial will be in Providence Chapel Cemetery, Bluemont.

Pallbearers will be Wilton Shepherd Jr., Darrell Shepherd, Dale Shepherd, George Shepherd, Terry Shepherd, and Phillip Fowler.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

William B. Humphries Jr.
William Booker Humphries Jr., 74, of 861 Julius Keller Road, Strasburg, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at The Home, Woodstock.

Mr. Humphries was born Jan. 26, 1926, the son of William B. and Alice Marshall Humphries.

He was retired from the Northern Virginia Daily after 30 years.

He was in the Merchant Marine during World War II and in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He was a graduate of Bethel Hill High School, North Carolina.

He was a member of Bethel Hill Baptist Church and Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg. He was a charter member of the North Shenandoah Ruritan Club.

He was married to Mary Keller.

Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Beth Bowman of Strasburg; a son, William B. Humphries III of Strasburg; two sisters, Louise Cottingham of West Point and Alice West of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Robert Pulley of Clover, S.C., and Tom Humphries of Roxboro, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Lebanon Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Carlyle A. McDonald officiating. Military honors will be accorded by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77.

Friends may call anytime at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Clares B. Snowden
Clares Bays Snowden, 80, of 1272 Carpers Pike, Winchester, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Snowden was born May 31, 1919, in Pax, W.Va., the daughter of Claude and Lelia Price Bays. She was an electronics technician for the Scope in Herndon.

She was a member of Reed Baptist Church in Reed, W.Va.

Surviving is a brother, Earl L. Bays of Gore.

A funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Calfee Cemetery, Beckley, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Olive M. Paskel
Olive Mae Saville Paskel, 91, of Romney, W.Va., died Monday, May 29, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Paskel was born Sept. 28, 1908, in Levels, W.Va., the daughter of G.M. “Mack” and Clara M. Strieby Saville.

She was a 1927 graduate of Shepherd College and taught school in Hampshire County for five years.

She was a member of Romney First United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service in 1940. She was a member of GFWC since 1937.

She married the Rev. Charles W. Paskel on June 1, 1932.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, Robert W. Paskel of Tampa, Fla., and Stanley L. Paskel of Gore; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Romney First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon and the Rev. Douglas Shepherd officiating. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service at the church.

Richard K. Eddy
Richard Kurtz Eddy, 88, of 123 Latane St., Winchester, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Eddy was born July 19, 1911, in Winchester, the son of Charles Vernon Eddy and Katharine Kurtz Eddy.

He was a descendant of Adam Kurtz, who was a member of the Morgan Riflemen, and a grandson of Capt. George W. Kurtz of the Stonewall Jackson Brigade C.S.A.

He was a graduate of Handley High School and Washington & Lee University.

He was in the Coast Guard during World War II and served in the Naval Reserve.

He operated a collection agency and had been associated with his aunt, Lucy F. Kurtz, in the management of the furniture and funeral business of George W. Kurtz.

He was a member of the Winchester Electoral Board for 24 years.

He was a member of American Legion Conrad-Hoover Post 21, past commander of the VFW Post 2123, and 7th District commander of the VFW.

He was a member of the Society of Forty and Eight and past Chef de Gare. He was a life member of Winchester Elks Lodge 867, where he was past exalted ruler and secretary. He was a member of Eagles Aerie 824 and Moose Lodge 1283. He was an associate member of Old Fredericktowne Lodge 12 of the Fraternal Order of Police.

He was a member of the Son’s of the American Revolution and the First Presbyterian Church.

He was active in veteran’s affairs and volunteered at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. He was an active volunteer with the March of Dimes and the Red Cross Blood Donor Program.

He married Leona Largent on Aug. 2, 1947.

Surviving with his wife, is a daughter, Lucy Eddy Bronson of Arlington.

A private burial is planned at a later date in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Sharon L. Hall
Sharon L. Cain Hall, 55, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Tuesday, May 30, 2000 in City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Mrs. Hall was born July 8, 1944, in Winchester, the daughter of Howard W. Cain and Gladys Cain Cole.

She retired in 1996 from Corning Glass Works.

She was a graduate of James Wood High School.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Winchester and an active member of Eagles Aerie 4179 in Martinsburg.

Surviving with her mother, of Winchester, are a daughter, Kymberlei Hall Wears of Bristow; a brother, Ronald W. Cain of Alexandria; and a grandson.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Chad Herndon officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

William Dunlap Sr.
William “Pete” Jerry Dunlap Sr., 84, of Conicville Road, Mt. Jackson, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, in Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mr. Dunlap was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Gore, the son of Jerry S. and Ida Palmer Dunlap.

He was a retired farmer and an Army veteran.

Surviving are four daughters, Melanie Litten of Hudson Cross Roads, Diane Cain of Conicville, Jerri Shaffer of Woodstock, and Lisa Ruby of Gloucester; a son, William J. Dunlap Jr. of Mt. Jackson; three sisters, Ethel Swartz of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Mildred Harley of Gainesville, and Mariam Orndorff of Berryville; two brothers, Grover Dunlap of Bunker Hill and Walter Dunlap of Gore; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A private service and burial is planned.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Jackson Rescue Squad or to Conicville Fire Department.

The Rev. Henry C. Eller
The Rev. Henry Cline Eller, 100, of Bridgewater, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at the Bridgewater Home.

The Rev. Eller was born April 12, 1900, in Salem, the son of Christian and Rebecca Eller.

He was an ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren for 47 years and pastored churches in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana. He retired in 1965.

He attended Daleville College and graduated from Bridgewater College in 1924 and Bethany Seminary in 1936.

He was a member of Bridgewater Church of the Brethren and a charter member of the Rockingham Male Chorus.

He married Fannie Bowman on Nov. 2, 1985. Mrs. Eller died in 1994.

His first wife, Effie Mae Naff, whom he married Sept. 2, 1924, died Nov. 30, 1984.

Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Wendell Eller of Bridgewater and Galen Eller of Stephens City; a daughter, Doris Heisel of Modesto, Calif.; three brothers, the Rev. Raymon Eller of North Manchester, Ind., the Rev. John Eller of Sebring, Fla., and Lowell Eller of Salem; a sister, Edna Snavely of North Manchester; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 5, in Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Robert E. Alley and the Rev. Gale Younkins officiating.

Pauline E. Clemons
Pauline Ethel Clemons, 89, of Berryville, died Monday, May 29, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Clemons was born Aug. 1, 1910, in Bluemont, the daughter of Taylor and Louise Lloyd Lee. She was a waitress at the Battletown Inn in Berryville and had retired.

She was a member of the Berryville VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are a son, Daniel R. Clemons of Leesburg; a daughter, Anna Lou Jackson of Berryville; a brother, John Lee of Winchester; three sisters, Helen Pierce of Alexandria, Dorothy Whitmire of South Carolina, and Peggy Syring of Florida; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A son, David Lee Clemons, is deceased.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with the Rev. Elijah White officiating.

Memorials may be made to Rose Hill Nursing Home, 110 Chalmers Court, Berryville.

Robert A. Geanious
Robert Allen Geanious, 67, of 9138 Congress St., New Market, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg.

Mr. Geanious was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Winchester, the son of Peter and Villa Lemon Geanious. He had retired as the manager of a thrift shop in Richmond.

Surviving are a daughter Jody Geanious Jenkel of Edinburg; a son, Peter Geanious of Urbana; a sister, Jean Armel of Winchester; a brother, James Geanious of North Carolina; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Theis Funeral Chapel, New Market.

Hazel V. Hoover
Hazel Virginia Hoover, 93, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Monday, May 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Hoover was born April 16, 1907, in Shenandoah County, the daughter of Homer and Ora Bowers Kipps.

She was a former sales clerk with Eyerly’s, now Bon Ton.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and attended Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church.

She was married to Russel C. Hoover.

Surviving are a son, Danny R. Hoover of Inwood, W.Va.; a daughter, Betty Bragg of Stephenson; six sisters, Audrey Shipler of Chambersburg, Pa., Helen Ashton of Shanghi, W.Va., Ruby Albright of Martinsburg, Jeanette Husler and Marie Brymesser, both of Carlisle, Pa.; and Doloph Kipps of Richmond; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Paul C. Stanley officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Frances V. Link
Frances Virginia Link, 74, of 130 Broad St., Winchester, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Link was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Capon Springs, W.Va., the daughter of Hazel Orndorff Linaburg. She was a member of People’s Country Church in Siler.

She married Ira Link on Oct. 25, 1965, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with her husband are three sons, Carroll Link of High View, W.Va., Willard Link of Winchester, and Ward Link of Capon Springs; two brothers, Ted Linaburg of Winchester, and Wilmer Linaburg of Stephens City; two sisters, Lillian Fox of Stephens City and Juanita Ludwig of Capon Springs; a step-daughter, Shirley Helsley of Strasburg; a stepson, Tex Link of Strasburg; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with Pastor Joe Roby officiating. Burial will be in Rio Cemetery, Rio, W.Va.

Pallbearers will be Michael Linaburg, Mike Linaburg Jr., Gary Fox, Calvin Fox Jr., Frank Funk Jr., and Bill Puffinburger.

Sonia D. Miller
Sonia Darlene Miller, 63, of 5228 Wardensville Grade, Winchester, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Miller was born Dec. 4, 1936, in Mount Storm, W.Va., the daughter of Charles and Delphie Weese Manks. She was a computer programmer for ARB in Beltsville, Md., and retired after 20 years.

She was a member of the United Brethren Church in Bismark, W.Va.

She married Rodney Leroy Miller on April 15, 1955, in Oakland, Md.

Surviving with her husband, are two sons, Rodney Lynn Miller and Thomas Charles Miller, both of Winchester; and a sister, Lorell Noralene Brown of Keyser, W.Va.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. William W. Erbach officiating. Burial will be in Gravel Springs Cemetery, Star Tannery.

Pallbearers will be Forrest Goode, Ted Cox Jr., Robert Bennington, Barry Lane Papke, Cecil Boyce, and Dennis Combs.

Lester Mull
Lester “Bob” Mull, 64, of Front Royal, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Mull was born Aug. 29, 1935, in Morgantown, N.C., the son of Lester Mull and Dora Clontz Mauldin.

He was retired from the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C., where he was a printer. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

He married Patricia Ann Denchfield on Sept. 20, 1958.

Surviving with his wife, are two daughters, Rhonda Riner of Manassas and Ruth Morford of Leesburg; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal.

Guy M. Owens
Guy Merida Owens, 89, of 159 Devland Drive, Winchester, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Owens was born April 6, 1911, in Clintwood, the son of William and Phoebe E. Davis Owens. He was a farmer and retired as a coal miner with Consolidated Coal Co.

He was a private in the Army during World War II.

He was a member of Gainesboro United Methodist Church and a former member of the Gainesboro Ruritan Club.

He married M. Verneda Banks on April 13, 1946, in Clintwood.

Surviving with his wife, are four sons, Douglas L. Owens and Gerry Zirkle, both of Winchester, Randy Owens of Stephenson, and Rodney Owens of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Wanda G. Fletcher and Gleema Donald, both of Winchester; a sister, Gertrude Vanderpool of South Shore, Ky.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mary Lock officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, with military honors accorded by VFW Post 2123.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Doug Owens, David Braithwaite, Will Zirkle, Weseley Donald, Philip Donald, Blake Owens, and Brian Owens.

Tony J. Szymanski
Tony Jack Szymanski, 84, of Winchester, died May 21, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Szymanski was born Dec. 8, 1915, in Ford City, Pa., the son of John and Victoria Filak Szymanski. He worked for the Army Corps of Engineers.

He was a private first class in the Army during World War II.

He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Victoria Ann Shackelford of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister, Elizabeth Venderlic of Freeport, Pa.; a brother, Albert Szymanski of New Castle, Pa; and a grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with Father Dennis Kleinmann officiating. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Ford City.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 202 N. Washington St., Winchester 22601.

Mary E. Leight
Mary Elizabeth Pifer Leight, 75, of 1811 Berryville Pike, Winchester, formerly of Clearbrook, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Leight was born Oct. 5, 1924, in Middleway, W.Va., the daughter of George C. and Edna Nicely Pifer.

She was a graduate of Berryville High School.

She was a member of Galilee Christian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years, and a member of the Ladies Fellowship Circle.

She married Robert Leight on June 19, 1943, in Hagerstown, Md. Mr. Leight died on June 16, 1984.

Surviving are two sons, K. Robert Leight of Stephens City and Richard Leight of Clearbrook; two daughters, Charlotte Moulden and Betty L. Snapp, both of Clearbrook; two sisters, Betty W. Nicodemus of Middleway and Edna M. Owens of Clearbrook; two brothers, William C. Pifer and Francis E. Pifer, both of Middleway; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Moulden officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Leight, Paul L. Snapp, Timothy J. Snapp, Jeffery A. Moulden, C. Scott Moulden, and Richard A. Nicodemus.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
