Helen P. Todd
Helen Perry Todd, 89, of Montague Circle, Winchester, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Todd was born Dec. 10, 1910, in Winchester, the daughter of Stuart M. and Leona Steel Perry. She retired from Clearbrook Woolen Mill, where she worked as a burler, inspecting the wool.

She married Elmer R. Todd on Dec. 22, 1936, in Frederick, Md. Mr. Todd died Oct. 10, 1970.

Surviving are a son, Fred White of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; a sister, Hilda Patton of Winchester; three brothers, Thurman Perry and Mickey Perry, and Garland E. “Buck” Perry, all of Winchester; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A son, William E. “Billy” White, is deceased.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Hebron Cemetery, with Pastor Eric G. Farel officiating.

Pallbearers will be Garland E. White, John W. White, Mickey White, Fred White III, Rocky Lockridge, and Chip Franklin.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m.

Charles L. Merriner Jr.
Charles L. “Buddy” Merriner Jr., 54, of Circle Street, Winchester, died Monday, May 1, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Merriner was born March 30, 1946, in Winchester, the son of Charles L. and Nellie Marie Good Merriner. He retired in 1997 from Reimers Electra Steam of Clearbrook, where he had been a purchasing agent. He and his wife owned the Carousel Bakery.

He was a member of the Winchester Horseshoe Pitchers Association.

He married Deborah Gruber on June 20, 1971, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife, and his mother, of Winchester, are a son, Christopher Lee Merriner of Stephens City; a daughter, Tiffany Albin Merriner of Winchester; and two sisters, Carol DeHaven of Clearbrook and Cindy Beasley of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Reese Davis officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Combs, Edgar Good, Forrest Good, Gilbert Taylor, Gary Burke, and Jeremy Tinsman.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Charles R. Woodward
Charles Roy Woodward, 84, of 5770 Lord Fairfax Highway, Berryville, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Woodward was born Jan. 9, 1916, in Kearneysville, W.Va., the son of Homer H. and Ethel Jones Woodward. He was an inspector for the Department of Agriculture, an inspector and consultant for the H.F. Byrd organization, a consultant for the Winchester Apple Growers and Winchester Apple Growers Fruit Packing Line, and was a charter member of the Old Time Apple Growers Association, which he served as treasurer.

Mr. Woodward was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees, the Administrative Board, and Finance, Parsonage, Visitation, Building Maintenance, and Property committees.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Aleutian Campaign. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He was married to Geneva Auvil Woodward, Berlen Tolley Woodward, both of whom are deceased, and Sarah “Sally” Loy Woodward, whom he married on June 20, 1987, in Berryville.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Jinx Hartung of Sterling; a son, Charles R. Woodward Jr. of Jacksonville, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Kendra Tolley of Winchester, Lori Harasink of Gore, and Amy Robertson of Washington, D.C.; a stepson, Bart Robertson of Winchester; a brother, Nathan Woodward of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Carrie Foutz and Alice Cole, both of Martinsburg; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Berryville, with the Rev. Harold E. Thorton and Dr. Daniel Garrett officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be Charles R. Woodward Jr., Jim Hartung, Ron Woodward, Bill Woodward, Charles H. Woodward, and William F. Mackintosh Jr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

George D. Thomas Sr.
George D. “Mutt” Thomas Sr., 84, of Jefferson Street, Moorefield, W.Va., died Monday, May 1, 2000 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, W. Va.

Mr. Thomas was born April 25, 1916 in Hardy County, W.Va., the son of the Rev. John and Letetia Grubbs Thomas.

He was a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church of Moorefield and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille J. Shade Thomas in November 1998.

He is survived by a son, George Thomas Jr., of Moorefield; two daughters, Joan Whetzel of Dayton, and Donna Pratt of Stephens City; one sister, Edna Snouffer of Moorefield; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church in Moorefield with the Rev. Ted Osgood and the Rev. Gus O’Haran officiating. Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the Fraley Funeral Home in Moorefield.

Rachel K. Owings
Rachel K. Owings, 84, of 7919 Church St., Middletown, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Owings was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Fisher’s Hill, the daughter of Silas M. and Mary Hinkins Keller. She was a retired school teacher and taught in Warren County and Fairfax County.

She attended Madison Teachers College.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Christian Women’s Club, the Middletown Homemakers Club, and the Middletown Fire and Rescue Auxiliary. She was a founding member of St. Thomas Chapel Trust.

She married Will L. Owings on Nov. 24, 1937, in Fisher’s Hill.

Surviving with her husband, are three sons, Will L. Owings Jr. of Lebanon, Ill., John K. Owings of Middletown, and David A. Owings of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three daughters, Mary Lou Stallings and Susan R. Chewning, both of Middletown, and Carol A. Sorokin of Winchester; a sister, Mildred DeBell of Centreville; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Brosnan officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John W. Owings, Patrick L. Chewning, C. Conway Chewning IV, Ryan A. Owings, William J. Sorokin Jr., John F. Owings, and Mark E. Miles.

Earl L. Long Jr.
Earl L. “Bud” Long Jr., 77, of Frederick County, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Long was born Oct. 1, 1922, in Winchester, the son of Earl L. and Hilda Smoke Long.

He retired in 1985 as a farmer and orchard worker.

He attended Round Hill United Methodist Church.

He married Virginia Boyce on Sept. 23, 1950, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with his wife, are a son, Ronald E. Long of Winchester; a brother, John Long of Frederick County; three sisters, Madoline Castleman of Frederick County, and Lucy Keller and Genevieve Clevenger, both of Winchester; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Round Hill United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth and Dr. Ken H. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Lamp’s Family Memorial Cemetery, Frederick County.

Pallbearers will be Robert Oates, Mark Felner, Eric Heflin, Cecil Tennant, Randy Tennant, Jack Bailey, James Barr, Jim Kelchner, Beverly Grim, and Jim Connelly.

Julie A. Hand
Julie Ann Marie Hand, 72, of Delray, W.Va., died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at the home of her daughter, Dorothy Adams.

Mrs. Hand was born Oct. 19, 1927, in Auburn, Mass., the daughter of Henri and Adele Gallant Poirier.

She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church of Romney, W.Va.

Surviving are a son, David Hand of Wash.; three daughters, Gloria Jean Schmick of Utah, Shirley M. Kuharski of Beeville, Texas, and Dorothy K. Adams of Delray; a sister, Martha Javery of Auburn, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Romney, with the Rev. Eugene B. Weber officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W. Va., where a prayer service will be at 7:45 p.m.

Anna F. Bascue
Anna F. Bascue, 90, of 4028 Ebenezer Road, Bluemont, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Bascue was born Oct. 20, 1909, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Edward and Lucinda Trussell Fowler. She retired after 27 years as a sales person for Woodward & Lothrop in Washington, D.C.

She was a member of Mountain Baptist Church and a charter member of Providence Chapel Home Extension Club.

She married Archie V. Bascue, who died in 1971.

Surviving are a son, Francis K. Bascue of White Post; two sisters, Irene Carroll of Alexandria and Lucy Payne of Bluemont; a brother, Gilbert Fowler of Bluemont; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Robert A. Bascue and Edward Bascue, are deceased.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville, with the Rev. Charles D. Lumpkin officiating. Burial will be in Ketoctin Baptist Church Cemetery, Round Hill.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth D. Bascue, Rick Bascue, Phil Fowler, Bruce Foster, John Barlow, and Glenn Loveless.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

John A. Boyle
Cmdr. John A. Boyle, 81, of Stephens City, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Annaburg Manor, Manassas.

Cmdr. Boyle was born March 25, 1919, in St. Paul, Minn., the son of Ralph Boyle and Magdalen Von Ruden Boyle. He served in the Navy from 1941 to 1963, was a World War II veteran, and had received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Vienna, and the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving with his wife, Rosceil Boyle, are a son, Michael Boyle of Denton, Texas; five daughters, Susan Gupta of Stephens City, Melissa Olin of Manassas, Maureen Vonderheide of Batavia, Ohio, Sheila Johns of Stephenson, and Sharon Yates of Glen Allen; 23 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Boyle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, St. Cloud, at a later date.

Margaret S. Hockman
Margaret Seekford Hockman, 89, of Middletown, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Royal Haven Rest Home.

Mrs. Hockman was born in Page County, the daughter of George and Myrtle Miller Seekford. She was the former owner of the Cedarville Grocery and was a member of Green Valley Church of Cedarville and National and Front Royal chapters of the AARP.

She was married to Robert William Hockman.

Surviving are two brothers, Levi Seekford of Front Royal and Ralph Seekford of Winchester; and six sisters, Kathryn Elsea of Riverton, Alice Manuel of Lynchburg, and Bessie Easter, Ada Jackson, Loretta Vaught, and Betty Lou Ramey, all of Front Royal.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Hoover Heflin officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be M.W. Robinson III, Nathan Robinson, Leroy Bowers, David Seekford, Paul Thomson, and Jeremy Ramos.

Myrtle J. Muir
Myrtle Josephine Tibbetts Muir, 70, of Front Royal, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in her home.

Mrs. Muir was born Sept. 4, 1929, in Guilford, Maine, the daughter of Charles G. and Fannie Hurd Tibbetts.

She married Alston Warren Muir Sr. on Sept. 1, 1946. Mr. Muir died on July 31, 1973.

Surviving are five sons, Ray Muir and Randy Muir, both of Front Royal, Alston W. Muir Jr. of New Hampshire, Roger Muir of East Point, Maine, and Eddie Muir of Hudson, Maine; three daughters, Donna Mae Mutton of Front Royal, Bertha Serios of East Hartford, Conn, and Billie Jean Ganung of Richmond Hill, Ga.; a brother, Harley Tibbetts of Torrington, Conn.; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

Ellen C. Davis
Ellen Caroline Davis, 86, of 270 Vine Lane, Winchester, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Davis was born July 15, 1913, in Cumberland, Md., the daughter of Felix R. and Mary Susan Parker Brady. She received a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University and a master’s degree from George Washington University. She was a retired school teacher and had taught in Washington, D.C., and Petersburg, W.Va. She was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church.

She married Joseph Martain Davis on June 27, 1959, in Petersburg.

Surviving with her husband are a brother, Felix R. Brady of Cumberland, Md.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Omps Funeral Home with the Rev. Jay Kelchner officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Hillcrest Burial Park, Cumberland.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Robert G. Macbeth
Robert Gilbert Macbeth, 89, of Moorefield, W.Va., died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg, W.Va.

Mr. Macbeth was born May 9, 1910, in New York City, the son of Robert and Jeanette Lloyd Macbeth.

He first wife, Catherine, died in 1975, and his second wife, Marilyn, died in 1987.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Macbeth of Elk Grove, Ill., and Bruce Macbeth of Moorefield; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Donald G. Scofield will conduct a memorial service at 8 tonight at Moorefield Presbyterian Church.

Memorials may be made to Moorefield Presbyterian Youth Fellowship, P.O. Box 653 Moorefield, W.Va. 26836.

John W. Newlin
John Wesley Newlin, 71, of 2489-28 Martinsburg Pike, Winchester, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Newlin was born Aug. 19, 1928, in Stephens City, the son of Henry Miller and Edna Bean Newlin. He was a production leader with Abex Corp. in Winchester and was a member of Winchester Church of the Nazarene.

He married Margaret Reid on March 14, 1957, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife is a sister, Nancy Carwile of Gladys. A son, Bruce Lane Newlin, preceded him in death.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shenandoah Memorial Park, with the Rev. Paul Shallenberg officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Omps Funeral Home.

Georgia C. Morrison
Georgia Chrisman Morrison, 86, of 406 Virginia Ave., Winchester, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Morrison was born Dec. 3, 1913, in Frederick County, the daughter of Edward and Virginia Ware Chrisman. She was a longtime member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church and was a member of Pine Knotts Senior Citizens Group.

She was married to William Wesley Morrison, who died in 1973.

Surviving are a son, Gary Huff of Culpeper; a brother, Harold Chrisman of Wilkesboro, N.C.; and two granddaughters.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Richard Reid, Vernon Lutzenhiser, Max Leight, Curtis Jenkins, Paul Chrisman, and Gary Chrisman.
