Hugh E. Roof
Hugh E. Roof, 79, of Unger, W.Va., died Friday, April 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Roof was born Feb. 22, 1921, in Forest City, Ill., the son of Otis and Hazel Shawgo Roof.

He was a 1939 graduate of Forest City High School. He served as a pilot with the 311 Troop Carrier Squadron of the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Service medal and the Asiatic Pacific Service medal. He was a pilot with the Hawaii Air National Guard and worked with the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller. He retired as deputy chief of the Honolulu Tower. He was a member of the Southern Gentleman Fishing Club, in Cape Charles, the Risinger-Stotler VFW Post 4019 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and the Quiet Birdmen. He lived in Hawaii for many years, relocated to Baltimore, and moved to Unger in 1978.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mary Lou Geer Roof; two sons, Thomas E. Roof of Arcata, Calif., and Robb E. Roof of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Bessie M. Sevier of Perkin, Ill., a brother, Lyle W. Roof of Lady Lake, Fla., and a grandson.

A private funeral will be held in Punch Bowl National Cemetery in Honolulu.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Morgan County, 4100 Valley Road, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Arrangements are being handled by the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Clara Sepesie
Clara Sepesie, 94, of 211-124 Forest Lake Drive, Stephens City, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Sepesie was born July 11, 1905, in Beaver Falls, Pa., the daughter of Paul and Clara Demeter Soltas.

She was a member of the 4th Avenue Hungarian Presbyterian Church, which was started by her parents.

She married Joseph W. Sepesie on Feb. 21, 1925. Mr. Sepesie died in 1964.

Surviving are a daughter, Clara Jean Sepesie Powell of Stephens City; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-granchildren.

A funeral will be held 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, with the Rev. Malcolm Van De Riet officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Beaver Falls.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Linda L. Murphy
Linda Lou Wolford Murphy, 63, of Hedgesville, W.Va., died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Murphy was born Feb. 9, 1937, in Romney, W.Va., the daughter of William and Anna Wolford.

She worked for 32 years with the C&P Telephone company and retired in 1992 as an engineering supervisor.

She was a member of AARP, American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 223, and was a charter member of Sykesville Women of the Moose, and the Telephone Pioneers. She attended the Hedgesville Assembly of God.

She was married to Ronald P. Murphy.

Surviving with her husband are a son, Thomas L. Lear II of Hedgesville, W.Va.; two stepchildren, Douglas P. Murphy, and Tamera J. Murphy; two sisters, Mary Ellen Carr of Sykesville, Md., and Patricia A. Hott, of Augusta, W.Va.; three brothers, William H. Wolford Jr. of Romney, W.Va., Edward Allen Wolford of Westminster, Md., and Robert E. Wolford of Winchester; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, with the Rev. Frank Meadows officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Virginia C. Weir
Virginia Corbin Weir, 86, formerly of Clarke County, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at a local nursing home.

Mrs. Weir was born Sept. 4, 1913, in Rectortown, the daughter of Leslie and Elizabeth Owens. She was raised by her grandparents, John and Elizabeth Corbin.

She married Edward Wrenshaw Weir Sr. on Feb. 25, 1932, in Fauquier County. Mr. Weir died March 12, 1967.

Surviving is a son, Edward W. Weir Jr., of Winchester, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with the Rev. Parker Hinzman officiating.

Friends may call anytime Monday at the funeral home.

Hugh A. Havermale
Hugh Allen Havermale, 63, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Havermale was born Jan. 23, 1937, in Morgan County, W.Va., the son of Russell Lee and Rose Virginia Pearl Duckwall Hovermale.

He graduated in 1954 from Berkeley Springs High School and attended James Rumsey Vocational Technical Institute, where he received machine trade and HVAC training.

He was a first sergeant in the Army, and served from 1955 until his retirement in 1975, with tours of duty in Korea, Vietnam and Germany. He was awarded three Purple Hearts, four Bronze Stars, the Medal of Commendation, the Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was a captain with Pinkerton Security from 1976 to 1984 and worked in the western Maryland, Baltimore, and eastern Panhandle areas.

He was a member of Moose Lodge 1483, Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, and the Tri-State Honor Guard. He was a life member of Morgan County Chapter 34 of the D.A.V. and the Risinger-Stotler Post 4019 of the VFW, both of Berkeley Springs.

He attended Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs.

He was married to Nancy Drue VanGosen for 41 years.

Surviving with his wife, are three sons, Ernest Dale Havermale of Hedgesville, W.Va., Darren Robert Havermale and Steven Allen Havermale, both of Berkeley Springs; a daughter, Lisa Rose Ellen McCumbee of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Charlotte Cooley of Winchester and Mary Ellen Bolyard of Grafton; three brothers, Charles William Hovermale, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Raymond Lee Hovermale of Clear Spring, Md., and Roger Eugene Hovermale of Bridgeville, Del.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with the Rev. Hennis H. Fox and Pastor Jim Downey officiating. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, with full military honors accorded by the Tri-Sate Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Andrew B. McDonald
Andrew Benton McDonald, 27, of Sherando Circle, Stephens City, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. McDonald was born June 1, 1972, in Winchester, the son of Darrell “Dickie” B. and Sue B. McDonald.

He worked in the accounting department of Toray Plastics in Warren County.

He was a 1990 graduate of James Wood High School and graduated from James Madison University in 1994.

He was a player, coach, and manager with the Frederick County National Little League and coached the Frederick County Parks and Recreation Department’s flag football and basketball teams. He was the Frederick County Parks Volunteer of the Year in 1998.

He was junior varsity assistant coach for Sherando High School basketball team and an avid softball and basketball player.

He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and Winchester Eagles Club.

Surviving with his parents, of Winchester, are a sister, Teresa R. Wolfe of Middletown; and his paternal grandfather, Leonard B. McDonald of Berryville.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. William C. Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Mike Miller, Mark Sasser, Greg Sturgill, Dave Waters, Bob Markle, Jeff Strosnider, Jerry Burton, and Clay Grove.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.

Luther V. Foster
Luther Vernon Foster, 83, of Washington, D.C., died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, in Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, Md.

Mr. Foster was born Nov. 5, 1916, in Bentonville, the son of Clara Ellen Lentz and Rueben J. Foster. He was the stepson of Cecil Claig.

He was a member of the United Transportation Union for 58 years.

He was married to Cordelia Bell Rohrback for 65 years.

Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Roger O’Neal Foster of Winchester and Donald Wayne Foster of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Peggy Ann Trammell of Wheaton, Md., Patricia June Kybers of Springfield, and Kathryn Phyllis Foster of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Harvey Skinner officiating. Burial will be in Bentonville Baptist Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Sarah C. Gay
Sarah Catherine Gay, 75, of Vienna, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, in INOVA Fairfax Hospital.

Mrs. Gay was born Nov. 21, 1924, in Keyser, W.Va., the daughter of George M. and Sarah E. Paris Loy. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna.

She was married to Shelton M. Gay Jr. on Dec. 28, 1946, in Keyser, W.Va.

Surviving with her husband, are a son, Shelton M. Gay III of Cordova, Alaska; a daughter, Marcia G. Perry of Canton, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth L. Brunner of Wilmington, Del.; a brother, William W. Loy of Jacksonville, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at noon Monday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, W.Va. Burial will be in Wardensville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Shelton M. Gay III, Richard Gay, Daniel Perry Jr., Daniel Perry Sr., Alexander Perry, and Rick DaSilva.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Money and King Funeral Home, Vienna.

James P. Dennison
James Price “J.P.” Dennison, 85, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, in Southerland’s Retirement Community, Front Royal.

Mr. Dennison was born May 4, 1914, in Fairfield, the son of Carrie Margaret Lunsford Dennison and James Hugh Dennison. He retired from Avtex Fibers after 33 years.

He was a member of the Textile Workers Union and the Moose Lodge.

He was married to Pauline Holland, who died in 1970.

Surviving are two daughters, Alice Gay Dennison of Pennsylvania and Gloria Mae Dennison Fries of Front Royal; three sisters, Frances D. Custard Howell of Richmond, Margaret D. Trainis of Baltimore, and Mamie D. Capaci of Yardley, Pa.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Harvey Skinner officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.

Pallbearers will be Ray Winn, James Pugh, Maitland Carey, Walter Collins Jr., Robert Fries, and George Stewart.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mabel V. Johnson
Mabel Virginia Washington Johnson, 81, formerly of Front Royal, died Thursday, April 13, 2000, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital, Hampton.

Mrs. Johnson was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Milldale, the daughter of Sophia Robinson Washington and Counseller Washington.

She was married to Clifton Alfred Johnson.

Surviving are two sons, James Council Johnson of Newport News and Gilbert E. Johnson of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Mabel Butler of Front Royal; a sister, Anna Jackson of Boise, Idaho; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at noon Tuesday at Success Baptist Church, with the Rev. Frank Robinson and the Rev. David Wedlock officiating. Burial will be in Success Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Kathleen L. Markley
Kathleen Lou Markley, 87, of 22 Warden Circle Road, Wardensville, W.Va., died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Markley was born July 23, 1912, in Mill Creek, W.Va., the daughter of Jesse and Essie Kimble Parrack.

She was a member of Mill Creek United Methodist Church, near Elkins, W.Va.

She married William J. Markley on June 13, 1931, in Oakland, Md. Mr. Markley died on April 18, 1988.

Surviving are six sons, Carson W. Markley of Huttonsville, W.Va., Preston C. Markley of Olney, Md., Jesse C.P. Markley of Charlotte Hall, Md., Richard D. Markley of Wardensville, Charles L. Markley of Elkins, and William T. Markley of Wardensville; five daughters, Jacqueline D. Markley of Wardensville, Karen S. Karras of Ellicott City, Md., Muzine Derge of Fairfax Station, Lynda L. Welsh of Germantown, Md., and Melanie Lindsay of Mill Creek; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Two infant daughters are deceased.

A funeral will be today in Elkins.

Marvin E. Armel
Marvin E. “Bud” Armel, 71, of Woodland Avenue, Winchester, died Friday, April 14, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Armel was born April 7, 1929, in Clarke County, the son of Calvin L. and Clara McDonald Armel.

He retired in 1991 as a master wood craftsman and supervisor at Henkel-Harris Co.

He was a well-known area musician and had played for Patsy Cline with the Kountry Krackers.

He was a member of the Patsy Cline Museum Committee, Winchester Eagles Aerie 824, and Winchester Moose Lodge 1283.

He married Geraldine F. Brill on July 27, 1947, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife, are a brother, Phillip Armel of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; and two sisters, Myrtle Koon of Winchester and Hazel Bussard of Boonesboro, Md.

A son, Marvin E. “Woody” Armel Jr., is deceased.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Donald Jones officiating. Burial will be in Macedonia United Methodist Cemetery, Stephens City.

Pallbearers will be Roy Dixon III, Tommy Reynolds, Jim Unger, Sonny Lonas, Clyde Miller, Ronnie Flook, and Roger Strosnider.

Brian B. Hawkins
Brian Boyd Hawkins, 16, of 5082 Swartz Road, Maurertown, died Thursday, April 13, 2000, in the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.

Mr. Hawkins was born Feb. 26, 1984, in Winchester, the son of Steven Brian and Cynthia Dyke Hawkins. He was a sophomore at Strasburg High School, where he played varsity football and wrestled on the varsity wrestling team. He was a member of the Future Farmers of America, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, and the Youth Group of the Church. He was a lifetime member of the International Safari Club.

Surviving with his parents, are a sister, Brandy N. Hawkins of Radford University; his paternal grandparents, Kenneth D. and Louise M. Hawkins of Edinburg; his maternal grandparents, Doll D. and Janie Dyke of Toms Brook; and his paternal great-grandmother, Olive F. Hawkins of Edinburg.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Toms Brook, with the Rev. George R. Feldman officiating. Burial will be in Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock.

Pallbearers will be Justin Miller, Craig Miller, Keith Shrum, John Wilburn, Mike Himelright, Ryan Judy, Stuart Leake, and John Reynolds

Charles R. Burner
Charles Randolph “Sandy” Burner, 91, of Silver Spring, Md., died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring.

Mr. Burner was born March 4, 1909, in Front Royal, the son of Essie Conner and Charles Wesley Burner. He was retired from the real estate business.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the Lions Club for 53 years and the Masonic Lodge in Silver Spring for more than 50 years. He was a member of Almas Temple in Washington, D.C.

He was married to Marie Hodge for 66 years.

Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Martha B. Jenkins of Silver Spring; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal, with Pastor Bruce Ladson officiating.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Inter-Faith Chapel, at Leisure World, Silver Spring, with Pastor Bruce Ladson and the Rev. Judith Birch officiating.

Karla K. Glassford
Karla Kay Corbin Glassford, 53, of Charles Town, W.Va., died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Glassford was born July 16, 1946, in Charles Town, the daughter of Norman W. and Louise “Tucky” B. Pine Corbin.

She was an officer at the United National Bank for 29 years. She had been with Bank One and the former Peoples Bank of Charles Town.

She was a 1964 graduate of Charles Town High School and attended Shepherd College.

She was a member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church, Ladies Auxiliary of Jackson-Perks American Legion Post 71 and the Women of the Moose Chapter 1028, both of Charles Town.

She married George R. Glassford in 1983.

Surviving with her husband, are a stepson, George R. “Bobby” Glassford of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; two brothers, Clinton Leeds Corbin of Charles Town and Norman Gregg Corbin of Summit Point, W.Va.; and two step grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Charles Town Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. William Everhart officiating. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va.

Florence M. Milner
Florence Mae Milner, 90, of Petersburg, formerly of Winchester, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000.

Mrs. Milner was married to Edward B. Milner.

Surviving are two children, Shirley Milner of Tallahassee, Fla., and Robert Milner of Petersburg; nine grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The Cremation Society of Virginia is handling arrangements.

Anne R. Clark
Anne Richardson Clark, 92, of 110 Chalmers Court, Berryville, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Clark was born Aug. 21, 1907, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Michael and Marie Timko Pipa. She was a teacher in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, from 1954 to 1958.

She earned a B. A. degree in elementary education at Howard Payne College, Brownwood, Texas, in 1953.

She was a member of the Episcopal church.

She married Thomas Edward Clark on Oct. 12, 1931, in Los Angeles. Mr. Clark died Jan. 2, 1993.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol Gibson of White Post and Georgia Sadler of Arlington; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A private service is planned.
